A baseball organizational meeting was held in the spring of 1939 with 19 aspirants to the Booster's line-up. Kiki Klisart was elected as player-manager. Red Kleve was field captain. The roster included: Moser, Reisner, DeCou, Klisart, Sersland, Holder, C. leuenberger, L. Leuenberger, Anderson, Ean, Hemesath, Bonfig, Kleve and Koch. This team enjoyed a very successful season losing the championship of the Cowpasture League in a disputed contest with Nordness. Two of the Boosters, Reisner and Klisart, batted over .400 for the year.

The Northeastern Iowa Baseball League was organized in 1940. Harold Klisart was named as president. The teams in this new union were: Ossian, Harpers Ferry, Monona, Postville, St. Olaf, Waukon, Garnavillo and Elkader. The line-up for the Boosters included .only two local boys, Klisart and Ean. Other players were from Festina, Nordness and Decorah. Late in the season, following a controversy over replying a game with St. Olaf, the Boosters withdrew from this league.

We find little account of the 1941 season. However the club was composed mostly of Ossian boys again. Edwin and Gerald Becker, John Andresen, Peter Barthelme and Donald DeCou were among those mentioned as members.

Evidently, there were no teams during the years of WWII. When the veterans returned by 1946, we find a team that included: Wessels, Klisart, Brockman, Kram-beer, Moser, Wolfe, Barthelme and Scheidel. Don Wessels struck out 19 batters in a 4 to 3 victory over Nordness.

Forty five interested young men met at city hall early in 1947 to organize a town ball club. These prominent citizens were selected as officers: Joseph Funke, president; Bill Brockman, treas.; Terry Vikre, sec'y and scorekeeper; Harold Klisart, manager; Don Wessels and Roman Ott, coaches. A committee was appointed to canvass the businessmen for donations to finance the club. A prize of $2 was offered for a name for the new team. The name, Hawks, submitted by Ernest Anfinson, was chosen. These men played on the Hawks team: Fred Scheidel, Roman Ott, Don Wessels, Harold Bengfort, Luke Klisart, Gleo Moser, Harold Klisart, Ernest and Bob Soland, Don and Jo Gerleman, Ray Hemesath, Hugo Barthelme, Alex Wolfe, Greg Remke, Bradley Brockman and Vernon Rovang. The newly organized Northeastern Iowa Baseball League included Nordness, St. Lucas, Burr Oak, Clermont, Festina and Ossian. The season ended with Festina and the Hawks tied for the championship of the league. The first playoff game ended with a score of 8 to 8 when darkness ended play. A second contest resulted in Festina winning the championship.

The next year the league was expanded to eight clubs. The Hawks, under the sponsorship of the Commercial Club, finished in third place. Don Wessels pitched two one-hit games this year. He was credited with a no-hitter in 1947.

The officers of the ball club in 1949 were: Wm. Brockman, president; Peter Barthelme, sec'y; Leo Barthelme, treas.; Dr. Jos. Holtey, advisor; Gus Klisart, groundskeeper; and Don Wessels, manager.

An item in 1951 notes that the Hawks have rejoined the N. E. Iowa League. Fred Scheidel was manager this year. The players were: Mundt, Scheidel, Martens, M. Uhlenhake, D. Uhlenhake, N. Wolfe, G. Wolfe, J. Timp, I. Timp, Knudsvig, Bohr, Gerleman, Larson, Amdahl, Wessels and Broderick. They finished fourth in the competition .

The following year finds these additional names on the roster: Nile Nesvik, C. Lechtenberg, Schweinifus, Hanken, J. Lechtenberg, Adrian Timp, Lawrence Franzen, Roger Peck and Billy Schissel. The towns listed as members of the N. E. Iowa league were: Nordness, Burr Oak, Bluffton, Hanover, Decorah and Ossian.

Softball became the "in" sport in 1953. Ten men's and four women's teams participated in league competition. The games were played at night on a lighted park near Art's Roller Rink. In 1954 there were eight teams, representing five neighboring towns, competing at the roller rink site.

The year, 1954, found Ossian rejoining the N. E. Iowa League. The expanded league was divided into two divisions of six towns each. The businessmen donated $113.50 for supplies to the Hawks.
