J. M. Faust, produce dealer, reports he Is paying cash for butter and eggs, and has facilities to handle large quantities. The four lumberyards claim they sell more board feet than the total of all other yards in Winneshiek County.

John DeCow lists the census of Military Twp. for 1868. It reads: population 1456 (an increase of 256); wheat—124,823 bu.; corn—68,797; oats—42,876; barley —6,154; buckwheat—102; potatoes—4,000; butter—42,425 lbs.; wool--2,174; cattle --1862; horses--551; mules--8; sheep—636; swine--l862; and dogs--133.

Superintendent of schools Wedgewood evaluates the country schools for the year I869:    "District 1—Mary Sawyer, teacher, pupils 8, wages $28—'One little girl was allowed to talk aloud too much.' District 3—Sarah Shaw, teacher, 34 pupils, wages $28. District 4—Ellen Carney, teacher, 24 pupils, wages $28—'More whispering and idleness than should be permitted.' District 5—Sunneva T. Lommen, teacher, wages $28, pupils 22—'A little improvement in discipline would do good.' District 6—Jennie Lyon, teacher, wages $28, pupils 13—'Good order and a fair degree of attention.' District 7--John McManners, teacher, wages $28, pupils 14, —'Good order prevailed.'

The Ossian markets in I869 were: wheat—80¢ to 95; corn—25¢; oats-~32 to 35; barley—$1.25 to 1.30; hides—8 1/2¢ ; hogs—$10.75 to $11; butter—20¢ to 25; eggs— 25¢ doz.; and gold--$l.35 an ounce.

Two warehouses, owned by P. H. Mills, collapsed due to the excessive weight of stored grain. Six warehouses and the depot were destroyed by fire. Total loss was estimated from $10,000 to $15,000. A box car was called into service as a temporary depot. The Milwaukee Road reported that shipments from the Ossian station were 300,441 bushels of wheat and 529,l30 lbs. of pork. These figures are more than double the shipments from any other point in Northern Iowa and Southern Minnesota.

Ossian has a hungry man! The Republican reported that after this person had consumed a normal supper, he topped off the meal with 18 boiled eggs, 6 half-pound cans of Cove oysters, 6 large slices of buttered bread, and washed it down with 5 cups of coffee. The restaurant bill totaled $3.75.

The Alsip Bros, of Decorah have established a brickyard in Ossian. They are presently constructing a building for Anton Gaertner. We believe that this structure, the Victor Staska apartment building on Mechanic Street, is the oldest building in town.

The Rev. Wedgewood reported at a temperance convention held in Decorah that ten to twenty liquor shops are now operating in Military Township.

Mrs. Stockel suffered a broken leg in a fall when alighting from a lumber wagon in front of Frank Figge's bakery. Dr. N. Moe was called and he skillfully dressed the injury. In an edition of the Bee published in 1917, editor Schmitz recalls the bakery of Frank Figge. His account follows: "It was located on Mechanic St. (the south side of the tracks then called Railroad St.) . The building was moved to face Main St. and became the A. G. Heck residence. There was a brick oven in the basement. I was born in this building."

In March of 1869, a correspondent from Ossian, probably the depot agent, wrote this account of rail shipments: "After careful computation of the movement of produce from this point, I find we have shipped during 1868:    325,900 bushels of wheat, 20,410 of barley, 50,660 corn, 50,940 oats, 3600 of potatoes, 5999 dressed hogs weighing 1,214,780 lbs., 2112 head of live hogs, 124 head of cattle, and 400,380 lbs. of butter, eggs, hides and wool."

"This, we claim, is a good deal more than any other station between McGregor and Minneapolis. In addition, we have received and delivered 7,404,020 lbs. of freight, and sold 2879 tickets to passengers taking the cars from this town.
