William Dowell Wallace was born Aug 18, 1825 in Indiana, the son of Joshua Wallace. He came to Iowa, purchasing land in Jefferson Township, Warren County. William owned and operated a saw mill powered by water on Clanton Creek. He married Mary Ann Thornburg on March 30, 1863 in Warren County and they had six children: Martha G., William R., James T., Richard Albert, Mary Rosa, and Minnie Evelyn. William's wife, Mary Ann, died on Oct 25,1900. After that time William lived with his married daughters in Iowa and California. He died in Chico, Butte County, CA on March 23, 1912, but is buried with his wife in Wallace Cemetery (aka Wick Cemetery), Jefferson Township, Warren County, Iowa.
