St. Mary's Cemetery

ST. MARY'S CEMETERY is a Catholic Cemetery located in the southeast quarter of the northeast quarter of Section 9 of Jackson Township. It is one-quarter mile north of St. Mary's, Iowa. Travel approximately seven miles west of Indianola on Highway 92, then go south for approximately three and three-fourths miles. The cemetery is on the west side of the road.

Immaculate Conception Parish was established in 1870 and was referred to as the German Catholic Church. The town of St. Mary's was platted August 8, 1870 on land donated by George M. and Catherine Durschell. Mr. Durschell named the town. The property for the church was purchased from Mr. Durschell for $5.00 and deeded to the Trustees, Joseph Sporrer, Michael Durschell, Bernard Sheve and John Gehringer. Both deeds were filed on March 7, 1871.

Many Germans and Irish settled the area around St. Mary's. Mark Gillespie was the first merchant and opened a store in 1871.

The first burial in St. Mary's Cemetery was an infant daughter of Bernard H. and Mary C. Brommel who died in 1865.
