Who was Who in Shupe Cemetery

[This information was gathered for the Warren County Genealogical Society picnic on June 23, 2014 at Shupe Cemetery, 19753 Underwood St., Lacona, Iowa. Unless otherwise noted, all information was compiled by Karon King.]

CYNTHIA “CYTHA” ANN BROWER (May 22, 1854 – Feb 1, 1899)
Cynthia Ann Brower was born May 22, 1854 in Allen County, Ohio, the third and last child of Enoch and Elzina (Shupe) Brower.  She was named after her grandmother, Cynthia Ann Shupe.  Sadly, her father, Enoch, died less than a month after she was born.  When Cynthia Ann was three, her mother married Nathan Miller in Allen County, Ohio. That same year, the whole family, including grandparents, Jacob and Cynthia Shupe, all moved to White Breast Township of Warren County, Iowa.  Nathan Miller died in 1881.  Elzina married Jonathan Beard in 1886, but he died in 1889. In 1895 Cynthia Ann was 41 and still living with her mother.  Elzina died in 1896.  Cynthia Ann went to live at the County Home and died Feb 1, 1899.
[Indianola Herald newspaper, Feb 9, 1899, p.3, col.2] Cynthia Bowers, who has been under the care of the county, died last Wednesday of acute pneumonia.  She was buried in Shupe cemetery.  Miss Syntha Bowers died Wednesday evening at the County Home, February 1. She was from Lacona and was taken there for burial.

IDA VIOLA BUTTERFIELD (July 30, 1869 – Sep 6, 1900)
Ida Viola Kline was born in Pennsylvania July 30, 1869 to George E. Kline and Melvina Richardson Kline.  Ida grew up in Pennsylvania and married Fred E. Butterfield in Maukesha, Wisconsin on June 21, 1887.  They had one son, Charles Elmer Butterfield, in 1888, then moved to Bremer County, Iowa and had Frank Earl Butterfield in 1889.  They moved to Muscatine County, Iowa and had a third son, Roy Butterfield, in 1893, but he died before the age of seven.  They had a daughter, Grace A. Butterfield, in 1896.  Ida’s husband, Fred, was a minister in the Christian Church in Lacona, Iowa, when Ida died at age 31 from a train accident and was buried in Shupe Cemetery.  Fred married Anna M. Wayman in Lacona on March 7, 1901 and they moved to Missouri.  Fred and Anna had two children: Dean and Jean.  Fred died April 1, 1917.
[Chariton Patriot newspaper, Thursday, Sep 13, 1900, front page]  A frightful and fatal accident occurred at the railroad crossing in the west part of Lacona last Thursday evening.  Rev Butterfield, pastor of the Christian Church at that place, in company with his wife and little son were on their way to prayer meeting.  Just as they reached the crossing their little son ran ahead of them, over the crossing.  A train was approaching and fearing the little fellow would become frightened and try to recross the track, Rev. Butterfield said to his wife, “You stay here. I’ll go across,” and leaped across the track in front of the rapidly approaching train.  Instead of obeying his directions, she undertook to cross the track and was struck by the engine of the coming train and was instantly killed, her body being pitched about forty feet. It is supposed she was so confused by the sudden danger in which her husband and son had been placed that she did not realize the awful danger into which she was plunging.  She leaves a husband and two little sons to mourn their irreparable loss of the dutiful wife and loving mother.  Funeral services were held from the Christian Church in Lacona Saturday forenoon and the remains interred in the Lacona cemetery.  The bereaved husband and motherless children have the heartful sympathy of the entire community in this dark hour of sorrow.

INFANT CAVINESS (Dec 26, 1923 – Dec 26, 1923)
Baby girl Caviness was born and died on December 26, 1923, White Oak Township, to Clifford and Mae Caviness.  Clifford T. Caviness and Mae Miller were married March 16, 1916 in Indianola, Iowa.  Clifford’s parents were Harvey Caviness and Ella Doughty.  Mae’s parents were Jacob Solomon Miller and Eliza Ann Needles.  Clifford and Mae had two sons and one daughter before this little baby girl was born: sons, Lawrence C. Caviness born 1917 and Donald L. Caviness born 1919, and daughter, Frances E. Caviness born 1922. Their little baby girl Caviness was laid to rest in Shupe cemetery, where her grandparents, Jacob S. and Eliza A. Miller were buried, as well as her great grandparents, Nathan Miller and Elzina (Shupe) Miller. Clifford and Mae Caviness had a daughter, Darlene, born in Iowa 1927, then they moved to Scotts Bluff, Nebraska where they had two more sons: Theodore born 1931 and Dewayne born1934. The family moved to California and both parents were buried in Glen Oaks Memorial Cemetery, Chico, Butte County, California. Clifford T. Caviness was born May 27, 1893 and died January 14, 1965.  Mae (Miller) Caviness was born Mar 4, 1894 and died April 21, 1978.

INFANT CHILDREN DODD (1876 - Jan 25, 1876)
“Infant children of Albert and Sarah E. Dodd, died January 25, 1876” is the reading on the gravestone in Shupe Cemetery.  Albert Dodd (age 36) married Sarah E. Lucas (age 18) in Warren County on October 6, 1874 so the couple had been married two years when their babies were born and died. Albert Dodd and Sarah E. Dodd were divorced and each went back to live with their parents.  Albert lived with his mother, Lorena and his step-father Josiah H. Dixon who lived in Indianola. Albert was born in New York to Stephen Dodd and Lorena Blodgett Dodd.  Sarah E. changed her name back to Lucas and lived with her parents, Andrew J. and Martha A. Lucas in Liberty Township, Warren County, until Sarah married Anthony W. Wilson on November 9, 1886 in Warren County. Anthony and Sarah Wilson moved to Dewey County, Oklahoma by 1910.  Sarah didn’t have any other children.  She died in 1939 and is buried in Bloomfield Cemetery, Dewey County, Oklahoma.

EMMA J. EDGINGTON (Apr 30, 1867 – July 15, 1891)
Emma J. Miller was born on April 30, 1867 in Warren County, Iowa,  the fourth child of Nathan and Elzina Shupe Miller. Emma grew up in White Breast Township. Her father, Nathan, died May 18, 1881, when Emma was fourteen. Emma married Jacob Leland Edgington on March12, 1888 at the age of twenty-one.  Jacob “Leal” was born Nov 14, 1854 near Kewanee, Illinois, the son of Isaac and Martha McKee Edgington. Jacob moved with his parents to Warren County, Iowa and his mother, Martha, died April 19, 1866, when Jacob was twelve.  Emma and Jacob Edgington were only married three years, when Emma died on July 15, 1891.  She was buried in Shupe Cemetery.  Jacob never married again, but lived with his brother, Matthew, and later took care of his father.  Jacob died February 21, 1920 and was buried in Newbern Cemetery, Lacona, Iowa.

ESTALENE SHUPE KILE (July 1882 –  Feb 21, 1932)
Ella Estalene Shupe and William Kile were married Nov 30, 1911 in Liberty Center, Iowa. William’s parents were Henry L. Kile and Nancy Jane Stevens. William was born in1885 in Audubon County, Iowa.  Estalene and William Kile had three children: an infant son who was born and died on Dec 14, 1912, a daughter, Helen F. born 1915, and a daughter, Wilma Virginia born 1916.  Estalene and William lived in Des Moines, Iowa, then Colorado Springs, Colorado, Union Township of Guthrie County, and the town of Audubon in Audubon County, Iowa.
[Chariton Herald Patriot newspaper, Chariton, Iowa, Thursday, Feb 25, 1932, p.4] Mrs. William E. Kile – Word was received in Lacona Monday of the death of Mrs. William E. Kile, which occurred Sunday, February 21, at her home at Audubon, Iowa.  Mrs. Kile was, before her marriage, Miss Estaline Shupe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Shupe [Samuel James Shupe and Elmira Sargent Shupe], and was born near Lacona in 1882.  She had attained to the age of 49 years.  She is survived by her husband, William E. Kile, and two daughters, Helen and Wilma, of Audubon; also her mother, Mrs. S. J. Shupe, of Indianola; one brother, Archie Shupe, of Danville; three sisters, Mrs. Reuben Lamb of Greeley, Colorado; Mrs. Glenn Hess of near Liberty Center; and Mrs. Robert Kimzey of Indianola.  The funeral was held Wednesday at 3 o’clock at Liberty Center, with burial at the Shupe cemetery near Lacona.

INFANT SON KILE (1912- Dec 14, 1912)
Baby boy Kile, whose marker in Shupe Cemetery reads “Infant son of W. E. & E. E. Kile, Dec 14, 1912” was born and died on December 14, 1912, the son of William E. and Ella Estalene Kile.  Ella Estalene Shupe married William Kile on November 30, 1911 at Liberty Center, Iowa.  William and Estalene Kile had two other children: Helen F. Kile and Wilma V. Kile Kibby.

FRANK FREDERICK KONRAD (1884 –  May 27, 1959)
[Chariton Herald Patriot newspaper, Chariton, Iowa, Thursday, June 11, 1959, p. 5] Frank Konrad, Long-time Businessman, Dies at 75 – Lacona – Our community was shocked by the sudden death of Frank Konrad, 75, Wednesday, May 27.  A life-long resident and postmaster for 20 years, he was in the hardware business here for many years.  He died en route to an Indianola hospital. Funeral services were conducted at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Saturday morning, May 30.  The Rev. Father John Kovacs officiated with the Rev. Father Higgins delivering the sermon. Burial was at Shupe cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Ford, Bobby, John, Teddy and Dick were called home from Rochester by the death of Mr. Konrad.  Among those from a distance who attended the services were Mr. and Mrs. Roy McCurdy of Ames, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Myers of Chariton, Mr. and Mrs. Sim Konrad and Mary of Chariton, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Elliott and family of Rochester, Minn.
[The Chariton Leader newspaper, Chariton, IA, Tuesday, June 16, 1959, p.3] Frank F. Konrad, son of Walburg and Christian Konrad, was born in Lacona, April 29, 1884, and died unexpectedly of a stroke May 27, 1959, en route to a hospital.  In July, 1911, he was married to Martha I. Shupe, who preceded him in death April 1941. In October, 1947, he was married to Alta Ruth Rodgers, who died in November1950.  Mr. Konrad served as postmaster in Lacona for over 20 years and previous to that was engaged in the hardware business.  Survivors include two brothers, P. C. Konrad of Lacona and S. J. Konrad of Chariton. Services were held May 30, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fathers Kovacs and Higgins officiating.  Interment was in Shupe Cemetery. The Beardsley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MARTHA I. KONRAD (1883 – 1941)
[Herald-Patriot newspaper, Chariton, Iowa, Thursday, April 17, 1941, p.6] Mrs. Frank Konrad, who has been critically ill for a week with a severe heart attack, suffered a cerebral hemorrhage Wednesday and passed away Sunday [April 13th] at one o’clock a.m.  Her sisters, Mrs. Lena McCurdy, of Ames; Mrs. Anna Myers, of Indianola; Mrs. Nora Wilke, of Milo, and brothers, Charles Shupe, of Clarion; Roy Shupe, of Eagle Grove, and John Shupe, of Tennessee, were at her bedside.

ELIZA A. MILLER (June 22, 1862 – Apr 24, 1904)
Eliza A. Needles was born in Warren County, Iowa on June 22, 1862, the daughter of Solomon and Martha Needles. Eliza grew up in White Breast Township and married Thomas Strahan on December 1, 1881, when Eliza was 19.  Thomas and Eliza had one daughter, Carrie Strahan.  Thomas died on April 26, 1882 and was buried in Chariton Cemetery, Lucas County, Iowa.  Eliza married Jacob Solomon Miller on August 18, 1886 in Warren County. Jacob and Eliza Miller had the following children: Eugene “Gene” S. Miller, Miles N. Miller, William H. Miller, May Miller, and Janie J. Miller.  Eliza A. Miller died on April 24, 1904 from consumption at the age of 42. Her husband, Jacob S. Miller, died June 20, 1917 and was laid to rest beside his wife in Shupe Cemetery.
[Chariton Patriot newspaper, Chariton, Iowa, Thursday, April 28, 1904, p.8, col.2] Mrs. Jake Miller died at her home three and one half miles northwest of this city Monday morning. Mrs. Miller has been in very poor health for several months past. Her remains were interred in the Shupe cemetery near her home. The sorrowing husband and family have the sympathy of all.

ELZINA MILLER (Dec 11, 1829 – Oct 16, 1896)
[Lacona, Iowa 1856-2006, by the Lacona Heritage Committee, 2006, P.248.  Information on Elzina Shupe was submitted by Mary Mitchell, who has kindly given permission to put online.] Elzinah Shupe, oldest child and daughter of Jacob J. Shupe and Cynthia Ann Myers, was born January 11, 1830, in Fairfield County, Ohio.  On November 28, 1847, she married Enoch Brower.  When Enoch died on June 7, 1854, he and Elzinah had three children: Emanuel, Lucetta, and Cynthia. Jacob Shupe was appointed guardian of the three children.  About 1857 they decided to move to Iowa. The farm in Allen County, Ohio was sold and the money invested for Elzinah and the children in a farm in Iowa. That land was section 20 in White Breast Township. It has remained in the family since it was purchased for Elzinah and her children. In 1857 Elzinah married Nathan Miller, also of Ohio.  They became the parents of four children: Mary Lydia Miller Sinift, Jacob who married Eliza Needles, George, and Emily who married J. L. Edgington. It must have been a busy household with seven children.  Nathan died May 18, 1881, and is buried in the Shupe Cemetery. On September 2, 1886, Elzinah married Jonathan Beard, a minister in the German Baptist Brethren Church just as Elzinah’s other two husbands also had been.  He died October 23, 1889, and is buried in the Breckinridge Cemetery, near Knoxville, beside his first wife.  Elzinah died October 16, 1896 and is buried beside Nathan Miller in the Shupe Cemetery.

GEORGE N. MILLER (Apr 11, 1863 – Jan 1887)
[Indianola Weekly Herald newspaper, Indianola, Iowa, Thursday, Feb3, 1887, p.3, col.4] Lacona - On the last Lords day, George Miller, son of Nathan Miller deceased, was buried in the Shupe cemetery. He had suffered for two or three years with bronchitis which terminated in consumption.  Last fall he went west hoping to receive benefit from the change of climate, but after a short stay grew worse, and came home realizing that his stay on earth must be brief. A short time before his death he was baptized in the Dunkard faith, then he made his will, thus setting all things in readiness, and calmly awaited the solemn change.  George was an exemplary young man, respected by all, and his loss will be felt in the neighborhood. He was twenty three years of age.  Rev Garver, a Dunkard preacher from near Leon, conducted the funeral services.

JACOB S. MILLER (Jan 14, 1861 – June 20, 1917)
[Lacona Ledger newspaper, Friday, June 29, 1917, front page, left column] Obituary – Jacob Solomon Miller was born January 14, 1861, in Warren County where he has resided all his life.  He died at his home in Lacona, June 20, 1914 at the age of 56 years, 5 months, 6 days. He was married to Eliza Needles, August 18, 1886.  To this union were born five children: Gene, Miles N., Mae, and Junie, of Lacona and William H. of South Dakota, who are left to mourn his loss, a step daughter, Mrs. Carrie Keith of Kansas City.  His wife died April 25, 1904, leaving the five children, the oldest one being fifteen years old and the youngest girl eight, which Mr. Miller cared for until they grew to manhood and womanhood.  He had been ailing for more than a year and was patient through it all. He was a loving father, a kind neighbor and will be missed by all. The funeral services were held at the M. E. [Methodist Episcopal] church, conducted by C. J. Henderson of Dallas Center, Iowa.  Interment was made in Shupe cemetery by the side of his wife.
[Death Records of Warren County, Iowa, 1906-1918, p.185] Jacob S. Miller, was born in Ohio on January 14, 1861 and died on June 20, 1917. He died of facial epethelioma (antrum). Jacob was a widower and his occupation was merchant. His father was Nathan Miller and his mother’s maiden name was Elzina Shupe.

NATHAN MILLER (Jan 14, 1832- May 18, 1881)
Nathan Miller, one of thirteen children born to Solomon and Lydia Miller, was born on January 14, 1832 in Maryland.  His family moved to Ohio around 1835. Nathan married Mrs. Elzina Shupe Brower on August 23, 1857 in Allen County, Ohio.  Elzina was the daughter of Jacob J. and Cynthia A. Shupe.  She had been married to Enoch Brower in 1847, and had three children: Emanual, Lucetta, and Cynthia, but Enoch died in 1854.  Shortly after Nathan and Elzina married, the family followed Elzina’s parents and moved to Iowa.  Nathan and Elzina had a daughter, Mary Lydia Miller, born 1858, in Keokuk County, Iowa. In 1861 the family moved to Warren County, Iowa, White Breast Township, where Nathan and Elzina had three more children: Jacob Solomon Miller born 1861, George Walker Miller born 1863, and Emma Jane Miller born 1867. In the 1870 census, all seven children are still at home, that is, Elzina’s children born to Enoch and Nathan.  In the 1880 census, Elzina’s widowed mother, Cynthia Ann Shupe, age 68, is also living with the family.  Nathan died on May18, 1881 and was buried in the Shupe Cemetery.  Elzina later married Jonathan Beard in 1886, who died in 1889.  Elzina was buried beside her husband, Nathan, when she died on Oct 16, 1896.

HARLEY SCOTT PRICE (Feb 20, 1910 – July 1, 1995)
[Dallas County News newspaper, July 6,1995, p.2, col.6] Adel – Harley Price, 85, of Adel died July 1, 1995, of a respiratory ailment at Adel Acres Care Center.  Graveside services were held on July 3 at Shupe Cemetery in Lacona.  Mr. Price was born in Rolla, N.D., on Feb 20, 1910, to Joseph and Ethel Price.  He lived in Adel for the past 10 years, previously residing in Dallas, Boone and Clarke Counties.  Mr. Price retired as a farmer in 1979, and belonged to Panther Creek Church of the Brethren. Mr. Price is survived by his daughters, Lavon Doherty of Adel, and May Hall of Pasadena, Calif. He is also survived by four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Price was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Eugene, Esli, and Charles; and three sisters, Effie Perch, Sylvia Abrahamson and Opal Stebleton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Panther Creek Church of the Brethren.

SARAH E. RODGERS (Aug 13, 1877 – Dec 3, 1900)
Sarah E. “Sallie” Shupe was born in White Breast Township of Warren County on August 13, 1877 to Isaac Shupe and Nancy Claytor Shupe.  Sarah was the youngest of four siblings: William, Clement, Charles, and Ida. When Sarah was 19 she married Homer Edwin Rodgers on April 18, 1897 in Warren County. Homer was the third son of Nathan Rodgers and Savilla Jane (Best) Rodgers who were married in Warren County December 21, 1866. Homer and Sarah Rodgers had two children: Gerald A. born 1898 and Anna May born 1899. Sarah died on December 3, 1900 and was buried in Shupe Cemetery.  Homer married Edna S. Cratty on September 27, 1904 in Lacona, Iowa. Edna helped to raise Gerald and Anna May.  Edna had no other children. Homer went from farming to become a rural mail carrier.  He and Edna lived in White Breast Township all of their lives.  Homer died April 17, 1955 and Edna died in 1916. Both are buried in Cochran Cemetery.

CLEMENT L. V. SHUPE (Mar 1867 – 1942)
[Herald-Patriot newspaper, Chariton, Iowa, Thursday, Sept17, 1942, p. 4] Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Brewster of Stuart, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Shupe, Ray Shupe, and Sam Shupe and children of Indianola spent Sunday at the home of their father, Clem Shupe, prior to his death. C.L.V. Shupe passed away at his home here after a long illness.
[Lacona, Iowa 1856-2006, by the Lacona Heritage Committee, 2006, P.247] Clement Layard Valandingham (C.L.V.) and Effie Jane Shupe – My grandfather, “C.L.V. or Clem” was born March 28, 1867 in Lacona.  He died in June of 1942.  He met and married Effie Kirkhart in 1889. She was born in Knox County, Illinois. They had six children: Ray, who married Leota Fetters; Nancy, who married Les Goode; Dulcie, who married Lester Bachtell; Beatrice, who late in life married Gerald “Chick” Needles; Lillie, who married Clifford Brewster; and my dad, Samuel Jennings, who married Ruth Haltom.  There were two Shupe farms in the Lacona area.  One was west of Lacona at the junction of what is now 200th Street and Tyler.  The home was on the northwest corner. West of the house is the Shupe Cemetery and northwest of the cemetery was the Shupe School.  Clem bought the hardware store on the north side of Main Street in Lacona and ran it for many years. He sold the store to Darrel Parkins. Effie’s family had the Kirkhart Dry Goods Store in Lacona. Clem and Effie had a great home across the street east of the Lacona Park. Almost half of the property was Effie’s flower garden. It was beautiful, and she earned several awards for its beauty.  One award was from the Des Moines Register and Tribune [newspaper].  Submitted by A. J. Breuklander.

CYNTHIA A. SHUPE (Mar 22, 1812 – June 3, 1890)
Cynthia A. Myers was born was born in Virginia on March 22, 1812, the daughter of Henry and Amelia Myers.  Her parents moved to Fairfield County, Ohio where she married Jacob J. Shupe on April 10, 1829.  Cynthia’s father, Henry, died and her mother, Amelia, and younger sister, Susan, came to live with the Shupe family.  By 1852 Jacob and Cynthia Shupe had all of their children: Elzina, Isaac, Henry, Emanuel, Arthur, Jacob T., Amelia “Millie”, and Elizabeth A.  The Shupe family moved to Warren County, Iowa in 1858 after their son, Isaac and his family, had moved there in 1856. They also brought Cynthia’s mother, Amelia Myers, with them.  Amelia died Feb 11, 1860 at age 71, and was buried in the Willis Cemetery, Warren County.  Jacob J. Shupe bought 383 acres of land in Liberty Township, but later lived in Marion County, Iowa, Clay Township in 1870. Jacob died Aug 31, 1874 and was buried in Shupe Cemetery. After Jacob’s death, Cynthia Ann lived with her daughter, Elzina Miller and family, then with her son, Isaac and his family until she died June 3, 1890 and was buried beside her husband.
[A Memorial and Biographical Record of Iowa, 1896, vol.1, p.500-501] His father [the father of Isaac C. Shupe] was Jacob J. Shupe and his good Christian mother was, before her marriage, Miss Cynthia Ann Meyers.  In their family were five sons and three daughters, whose names in order of birth are as follows:  Elzina, who has been thrice wed and widowed as many times, resides on her farm in White Breast Township, Warren county, Iowa, the names of her consorts being Enoch Brower, Nathan Miller and Jonathan Beard; Isaac C, with whose name we introduced this sketch, was the second; Henry was kicked by a horse and died from the effects of the accident; Emanuel is a farmer of Marion County, Kansas; Arthur is a well known resident of Indianola; Jacob, for a number of years a blacksmith of Corning, Iowa, is deceased; Millie Jane is the wife of John Nossman, a farmer of Marion county, Iowa; and Elizabeth married James Poling and lives on a farm in White Breast  Township of this county.

EDKAR ELLSWORTH SHUPE (June 3, 1886 – Mar 19, 1893)
Edkar’s gravestone explains that he was the son of W. J. and M. E. Shupe, age 6 years, 9 months, 16 days. His parents, William J. Shupe and Martha E. Needles were married March 1, 1885 in Warren County, Iowa. William and Martha had one son and three daughters: Edkar E.  Shupe, Lottie I. Shupe, Lola B. Shupe, and Lora A. Shupe.  Edkar died when he was six.  Lola Belle died when she was sixteen.
[Death Records of Warren County, Iowa, 1880-1910, p.119] Edgar Shupe died on March 19,1893 in White Breast Township, from cronpus pneumonia and complications of chronic bronchitis. 

EFFIE J. SHUPE (1871 – 1958)
[Indianola Record Herald newspaper, Indianola, IA, Aug 14, 1958] Effie Jane Shupe, eldest daughter of S.D. and Elizabeth Kirkhart was born in Knox County, Illinois, Jan 5, 1871, and died at her home in Lacona at the age of 87. At the age of eight she moved with her parents from Illinois to Iowa where she grew to young womanhood, attending the Lacona public schools. Dec 24, 1888 she married C. L. V. Shupe at Lacona. They had six children: Ray of Indianola, Sam of Richland, MO, Beatrice Needles of Lacona, and Lillie Brewster of Stuart.  Two daughters  preceded her in death: Nancy Goode of Lacona and Dulcie Bachtell of Arlington. In her early married life she joined the Christian Church, where she served for 30 years as a teacher in the Sunday School, a worker in the Ladies Aid, and all other activities pertaining to the work of the church, as long as her health permitted. She was a member of the Rainbow Rebekah Lodge, having served as past Noble Grand, and captain of the degree staff.  After the death of her husband in 1942, she was cared for by her daughter, Beatrice. Survivors are the above named children, 14 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren.  Let us not say that they have died.  Death is a word too final and cold. The soul lives on the other side. Tis but the body finds its native mold.  Let us then say, they have Passed on.  Passed on from night into the dawn, passed on to higher freer air. Passed on where life and love are pure. Passed on above the carnal cloud.  Passed on where good and truth endure.  Passed on from earth, passed on to God.

ELMIRA SHUPE (Feb 29, 1864 – Nov 16, 1941)
[The Leader newspaper, Chariton, Iowa, Tuesday, Dec 2, 1941, p. 2] Mrs. S. J. Shupe – Elmira, daughter of Cyrus B. and Elizabeth Sargent, was born Feb 29, 1864, in Lucas County near Chariton, Iowa and passed away in Indianola, Iowa Nov 16, 1941.  She was married to Samuel J. Shupe on Aug 7, 1881, and to this union were born six children, three of whom survive her.  They are Archie, of Burlington, and Mrs. Euna Hess and Mrs. Grace Kimzey, of Indianola.  Those preceding her in death were Mrs. Estaline Kile and Mrs. Ida Lamb and Mary, who passed away when a young girl.  Her husband died in June 1921.  Since that time she had made her home with her children. Her entire life had been spent in Warren County and at an early age she united with the Methodist Church at Lacona to which she has remained a faithful member even though in later years her health had prevented her taking an active part.  And even though in poor health herself she has lived to be a great comfort to her children when they most needed care and encouragement.  Many years ago she expressed her feelings regarding her departure from this life in the following words “I have no fear of death for I know that for me it will be the beginning of a wonderful life in Heaven.” In life she sided with the weak, the poor and the wronged and showed her sympathy with kind deeds of love.  If everyone to whom she did some loving service were to bring a blossom to her grave she would sleep under a wilderness of flowers. Free from her toil, her trials and her tribulations she has gone from this sphere of human woe, this vale of tears, into the presence of her Heavenly Father, her immortal spirit has gone.  In that divine presence we leave her.  Beside her bier and her grave we weep and with us weeps the sympathizing Jesus.  For us He intercedes that we may be found faithful and in our day when we depart we may meet with Him and with those we love who have gone before us into the mystic life of the Great Beyond. Funeral services were held at the Liberty Center Methodist church, with the Rev. Dr. W. M. Scheuermann in charge, assisted by the Rev. Glen Lamb.  Interment was in the Shupe cemetery near Lacona.

EVA C. SHUPE (Dec 1856 – July 10, 1928)
Evaline C. Nossaman was born in December of 1856, the daughter of Wellington and Sarah Nossaman. She was married to John W. Shupe on February 25, 1878 in Marion County, Iowa. 
[Chariton Herald Patriot newspaper, Thursday, July 19, 1928, p.6, col. 2] Mrs. Eva Shupe – After a lingering illness of several months, Mrs. Eva Shupe died Tuesday night, July 10, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Howard Myers, one mile west of Lacona. Mrs. Shupe was at the time of her death 71 years old, having been born at Pella, Marion County, in 1856.  After her marriage to John Shupe she moved near Lacona where she has made her home.  Her husband preceded her in death years ago.  She was the mother of eight children, four sons and four daughters. One son, Harry, preceded her in death. She is survived by the following children: Charles Shupe of Clarion; John of Des Moines; Boyd of Indianola; and Tena McCurdy of Ames; Mrs. Nora Wikle of Milo; Mrs. Ana Myers and Mrs. Martha Konrad of Lacona; and ten grandchildren.  Largely attended funeral services were held at the M. E. [Methodist Episcopal] Church on Thursday at 2 p.m. conducted by her pastor, Rev. Clements, assisted by a former pastor, Rev. McCurdy, with interment in the Shupe cemetery, west of Lacona.  Sympathy is extended to the bereaved ones.

HARRY A. SHUPE (June 10, 1880 – June 2, 1892)
Harry A. Shupe was the second of eight children born to John W. and Evaline C. Nossaman Shupe on June 10, 1880 in Warren County, Iowa.  Harry was only twelve years old when he died on June 2, 1892.  He is buried in Shupe Cemetery.

HENRY M. SHUPE (May 25, 1835 – Apr 22, 1873)
Henry M. Shupe was born on May 25, 1835 in Ohio, the third child of Jacob J. Shupe and Cynthia Myers Shupe. Henry grew up in Allen County, Ohio and was married there on June 20, 1857 to Sophia DeLong.  Henry and Sophia moved to Liberty Township, Warren County, Iowa in 1858 along with Henry’s parents and siblings.  Sophia and Henry had four children: Madison (born 1858), Hiram (born1859), Albert J. (born1862), and Arthur D. (born 1864).  Sophia died on Nov 6, 1865 and is buried in the Shupe Cemetery.  Henry married Lovisa Cooper on May 14, 1866 in Marion County, Iowa.  They had a daughter, Cora, born 1867, and a son, Oscar J., born and died in 1871, a son, Lemuel born1870, and a son, Homer O. born Dec 1872. Henry died on April 22, 1873 after an accident in which he was kicked in the head by a horse. He was buried in Shupe Cemetery. Lovisa married John Woods on January 29, 1880 in Marion County, Iowa and had Sarah M. Woods in 1882.

INFANT DAUGHTER SHUPE (1862 – Nov 6, 1862)
“Infant dau. of E. B. & M. A. Shupe, died Nov 6, 1862” was written on a stone in Shupe Cemetery.  Emanuel Blanchard Shupe and Margaret A. Hall were married in Warren County, Iowa on February 16, 1862. Their little baby girl was born and died in 1862.  Sadly, her mother, Margaret A., died the very next year, on April 13, 1863 and was also buried in Shupe Cemetery.  Her father, Emanual later married Anna Good on July 9, 1871 in Page County, Iowa.  Emanual and Anna had one daughter, Laura F, born in Iowa, then moved to Kansas and had seven more children: Bertram A., Lizzie, H. E., Effie S., Alice C., Inez, and Elmer.  Emanuel B. Shupe was born Jan 17, 1840 in Allen County, Ohio and died Sep 30, 1911. He was buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Harper, Kansas.

ISAAC C. SHUPE (Jan 7, 1832 – July 22, 1910)
Isaac C. Shupe was born in Ohio, January7, 1832, the son of Jacob J. Shupe and Cynthia Ann (Myers) Shupe. Isaac’s wife, Nancy, died Feb 4, 1901 (age 65).  When Isaac was 72 he married Mrs. Margaret E. Bernard, who was 40, on March10, 1903 in Chariton, Iowa.  Isaac died seven years later, on July 22, 1910 and was buried with his first wife, Nancy, in Shupe Cemetery.

1910, at his home in this city at the advanced age of 78 years and 6 months.  Mr. Shupe had been a resident of Warren County since the early fifties [1850s]. He had been a sufferer for several months and all that loving hands could do was done to make his last days comfortable.  He had been a member of the Church of Christ ever since the church was organized at this place.  His first wife died some nine years ago and two years later he was married to Mrs. Margaret E. Bernard, of Chariton, who with four sons and two daughters, a number of grandchildren and two sisters and one brother are left to mourn his loss.  His oldest child, John W., died four years ago, and nine years ago his youngest child, Mrs. Sallie Rodgers, died. The community has lost a good citizen and neighbor but what is our loss is his gain.  Funeral services were held Sunday, July 24, at two o’clock at the Christian Church by the pastor, Brother Hyten, assisted by Reverend McCurdy, of the M. E. [Methodist Episcopal] Church, with interment in the Shupe cemetery three miles west of town.
[Memorial and Biographical Record of Iowa, 1896, vol.1, p.500-501] Allen county, Ohio, was for some years, or until 1856, the home of our subject [Isaac C. Shupe].  At that time, as already stated, he came out to Iowa and made permanent settlement here, purchasing on his arrival a farm in White Breast Township, where for years he carried on extensive operations.  In connection with his agricultural pursuits he was largely interested in buying and shipping stock, Ottumwa and Chicago being his markets, and both his crops and his stock netted him a good revenue.  From time to time he carefully invested his accumulations, an now in his declining years he has a competency and is surrounded with all that goes to make life happy in this favored little town where he has retired.  Mr. Shupe was married March 16, 1854, to Miss Nancy Claytor, a native of Fairfield County, Ohio, and a daughter to Samuel Claytor. Their children are as follows: John W., born in Allen County, Ohio, March 10, 1856, is a resident of Lacona, and engaged in stock buying; Samuel is a farmer in Warren county, his location being on section 20, of White Breast Township;  Eliza Ann is the wife of Samuel B. McFarland, the popular landlord at Liberty Center, Iowa; William J. is a farmer on section 19 of White Breast Township; Clement L. V. is a farmer of the same township; and Ida O. and Charles O., twins. Ida O. is the wife of Henry Davis, a resident of Andover, Missouri; and Charles O. has tonsorial parlors in Lacona; while “the baby,” Miss Sallie E., is attending the high school in Lacona.  Politically, Mr. Shupe affiliates with the Democratic Party, his first presidential vote having been cast for Franklin Pierce.  The family worship in the Christian Church.  Though sixty-three years have passed over the head of Mr. Shupe they have left their impress but lightly on his form and he appears to be yet in the vigor and strength of manhood.

JACOB J. SHUPE (Oct 16, 1805 – Aug 31, 1874)

Shupe was born October16, 1805 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the third son of nine children.  His father was John, and his mother was Elizabeth (Conrad) Shupe.  Jacob married Cynthia Ann Myers on April 10, 1827 in Lancaster, Ohio. Cynthia was born March 22, 1812 in Virginia. Her parents were Henry and Amelia Myers.  Jacob began working as a blacksmith apprentice but later owned land and settled into farming. Jacob and Cynthia became the parents of eight children: Elzinah, Isaac, Henry, Emanuel, Arthur, Jacob T., Amelia Jane and Elizabeth. The Shupes, along with Cynthia’s mother, Amelia, a widow by this time, came to Iowa around 1856. All of the family settled in White Breast Township with the exception of Emanuel who moved to Harper, Kansas. Jacob T. later moved to Corning and became a well-known blacksmith in that area. Henry died as a young man after being kicked by a horse.  Arthur lived in Indianola and was living in Lacona at the time of his death.  Amelia Jane married J. C. Nossaman, a farmer from Bellfontaine, and Elizabeth married James Poling and lived on a farm in White Breast Township. Eventually they moved to Indianola. Cynthia’s mother, Amelia Myers, died after coming to Iowa and is buried in the Willis Cemetery.  Jacob died in1874 and Cynthia in 1890.  They are buried in the Shupe Cemetery.

JACOB J. SHUPE (June 9, 1874 – Feb 6, 1915)
[Obituary posted on the Warren County GenWeb site without a source.] Jacob J. Shupe, 39, was born the son of Arthur and Lucetta Fogle Shupe on June 9, 1874 and came to his death as the result of a mine accident February 6, 1915.  He was married to Rosezetta Smith, of Lacona on March 31, 1895. To this union were born six boys and four girls, all of whom are still living and who, with the wife and mother, now mourn the loss of husband and father. His death came as a shock to the community, as all such deaths do, and to the family, only those who have had this experience can understand how great is this sudden shock of sorrow and bereavement. Besides his immediate family, he leaves his aged father of Des Moines, IA, one sister, Mrs. Clara Wilson of Sioux Rapids, IA, two brothers, Fred of Canada, Richard of Lacona, and two half-sisters, Mrs. Lottie Simmons and Verna Shupe, all of whom, together with many friends now mourn his loss. For several years he has been a member of the Church of Christ and throughout all of his difficulties, has tried to live as a child of God. This is a source of much hope and comfort to the sorrowing family and friends. Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ, conducted by E.L. Smith. Interment is in the Shupe Cemetery, NW of Lacona, IA.

JOHN W. SHUPE (Mar 10, 1856 – July 28, 1906)
John W. Shupe was born March 10, 1856 in Ohio to Isaac C. and Nancy C. Shupe.  The family moved to Warren County, Iowa in 1858 where John grew up.  John was married to Evaline C. Nossaman in Marion County, Iowa on February 25, 1878.  John and Eva had eight children: Charles E. Shupe who married Julia D. Stanley in Lacona, Iowa on June 27, 1899; Harry A. Shupe who died on June2, 1892 at age 12; Leroy Shupe who married Iza Vera Criley in Ottumwa, Iowa on October 22, 1908; Martha I. Shupe who married Frank F. Konrad in Lacona, Iowa on July 26, 1911; Nora E. Shupe who married William Wikle in Lacona, Iowa on Dec 28, 1904; Artena “Tena” Shupe who married R. Roy McCurdy in Lacona on June 15, 1910; Anna A. Shupe who married Howard I. Myers in Lacona on June 25, 1913; and John Martin Shupe who married Ruth Kent in Audubon on Feb 5, 1923.  John W. Shupe died on July 28, 1906 at age50. His wife, Evaline, lived to be 72 and died on July 10, 1928.  They’re buried beside each other in the Shupe cemetery.

LOLA BELLE SHUPE (Aug 12, 1889 – Feb 14, 1906)
Lola Belle Shupe, the second of three daughters born to William J. and Martha Needles Shupe, was born on August 12, 1899 in Warren County, Iowa.  Her father, William J. Shupe, was the son of Isaac C. and Nancy C. Claytor Shupe.  Her mother, Martha E. Needles, was the daughter of Solomon H. and Martha Mumford Needles. Lola Belle had a brother, Edker Ellsworth, who died when he was six, an older sister, Lottie J., and a younger sister, Laura A. When Lola was sixteen she died on Feb 14, 1906 and was buried in Shupe Cemetery, Warren County, Iowa.

LUCETTA SHUPE (May 28, 1843 – Oct 28, 1881)
Lucetta Ella Fogle was born in Ohio on May 28, 1843, the daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth Fogle.
The Fogle family moved to Lacona, Iowa and Lucetta married Arthur David Shupe on May 20, 1869 in Warren County.  Arthur D. “Art” was the son of Jacob J. and Cynthia Myers Shupe, born Nov 7, 1843 in Allen County, Ohio. Lucetta and Art Shupe had four children: Clara V. born 1872, Jacob J. born 1874, Addison Richard “Dick” born 1877, and Frederick A. born 1879. When Lucetta was 38 years old, she died on October 28, 1881 and was buried in Shupe Cemetery.  Her husband, Art, married Mary E. Morris Smith on Feb 25, 1883.  Mary had five children to a previous marriage.  Art and Mary E. had two daughters: Charlotte A. born 1884 and Verna I. born 1890.  Mary E. and Art were divorced before 1895.  Art married Esta W. Brannen Dec 16, 1896.  Art died on Jan 25, 1916 and is buried in Carlisle Cemetery, Carlisle, Iowa.

MARGARET A. SHUPE (Feb 11, 1843 – Apr 13, 1863)
Margaret A. Hall was born in Guernsey County, Ohio, Feb 11, 1843, in a large family of ten children born to Joseph S. and Catherine Hall.  The Hall family moved to Liberty Township of Warren County, Iowa in 1850 when Margaret was seven.  Margaret married Emanuel B. Shupe on February 16, 1862 in Warren County.  Emanual was the son of Jacob J. Shupe and Cynthia Myers Shupe. Margaret gave birth to a baby girl who died on November 6, 1862.  Within five months, Margaret A. Shupe died at age 20, on April 13, 1863 and both her baby daughter and she were buried in Shupe Cemetery. Margaret’s husband, Emanual married Anna Good on July 9, 1871, and moved his family to Kansas. He had eight children to Anna. Emanuel died September30, 1911 and is buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Harper, Kansas.

MARY F. SHUPE (Nov 29, 1893 – Oct 21, 1908)
Mary’s parents, Samuel J. and Elmira had six children: Estalene born 1882, Ida M. born 1884, Archie G. born 1888, Euna H. born 1891, Mary F. born 1893, and Grace born 1897. See information on Elmira Shupe in this listing.
[Death Records of Warren County, Iowa 1906-1919, p.45] Mary Shupe died at Liberty Center from peritonitis on October 21, 1908, age 14 years, 10 months, 22 days.  She was born in Iowa and was the daughter of Samuel J. Shupe and Ella [Elmira] Sargent. Mary was buried in Shupe Cemetery on October 23, 1908.

NANCY C. SHUPE (Sep 11, 1836 – Feb 4, 1901)
Nancy C. Claytor was born on Sep 11, 1836 in Ohio, the daughter of Samuel Claytor and Susan Culp Claytor. Nancy was one of at least nine children of Samuel and Susan, including: Francis, Jacob, Elizabeth Ann, Joseph, Susan, Christian, Samuel C., and David L. When Nancy was 17 years old she married Isaac C. Shupe in Allen County, Ohio on March 16, 1854. They had one son, John W. Shupe, in Ohio, then moved to Warren County, Iowa where seven more children were born: Samuel J., Eliza A., William J., Clement L.V., Charles O. and Ida O. (twins), and Sarah.  It is believed that Nancy’s mother died in Allen County, Ohio in 1855. Nancy’s father, Samuel, married Mary Eich in Allen County, Ohio on Dec 1, 1859.  Several of Nancy’s siblings moved to Iowa and are buried in the Cochran Cemetery near Lacona, including: Jacob Claytor (and his wife, Phoebe), Elizabeth Ann Claytor Fantz (and her husband, Michael), Susan Claytor Warnock, and Samuel C. Claytor. Another brother, David L. Claytor, lived in Warren County, Iowa and had a one-year-old son, Amos W. Claytor, who is also buried in Cochran Cemetery.  Nancy Claytor Shupe died at the age of 65, on February 4, 1901 and is buried in Shupe Cemetery.  Her husband, Isaac, married a Mrs. Margaret E. Bernard in 1903. Isaac died on July 22, 1910 and is buried with Nancy in Shupe Cemetery.

OSCAR J. SHUPE (Mar 10, 1871 – Dec 13, 1871)
“Oscar J., son of H. M. & L. Shupe, died Dec 13, 1871, aged 9 months, 3 days” is how the gravestone reads in Shupe Cemetery.  Little Oscar J. Shupe was the second child of Henry M. Shupe  and Lovisa Cooper Shupe.  This was Henry’s second marriage when he married Lovisa Cooper on May 14, 1866 in Marion County, Iowa. Lovisa was the daughter of Lemuel and Lucy Cooper who lived in Clay Township of Marion County, Iowa. Henry M. was the son of Jacob J. and Cynthia Shupe.  Henry died in 1873 and Lovisa married John Woods in 1880, Marion County, Iowa.

SAMUEL JAMES SHUPE (June 19, 1858 – July 30,1921)
Samuel James Shupe was born in Warren County, Iowa on June 19, 1858.  He was married to Elmira Sargent on August7, 1881 at Lacona, Iowa.  In 1900 the family lived in Liberty Township and in 1908 he was the Liberty Township Clerk. Samuel was co-owner of the Shupe Brothers Hardware Store, with Clem L.V. Shupe and Charles Edward Shupe. He lived in Liberty Township in 1910, and died in Warren County on July 30, 1921.  He and his wife, Elmira, are buried in Shupe Cemetery.
[Death Records of Warren County, Iowa 1921-1934, p.2]  Samuel James Shupe was born in Lacona, Iowa. His father was J. C. Shupe.  Samuel died on July 31, 1921 in Knoxville, Iowa with mitral regurgitation cardiac insufficiency.  His age was 63 years, 1 month, 11 days.

SOPHIA SHUPE (Jan 23, 1837 – Nov 6, 1865)
Sophia DeLong was born in Pennsylvania on Jan 23, 1837, the daughter of Ephraim and Maria Schneck  Delong.  The family moved to Medina County, Ohio.  Sophia married Henry M. Shupe on June 20, 1857 in Allen County, Ohio.  Henry M. Shupe was born on May 25, 1835 in Ohio, the son of Jacob J. Shupe and Cynthia Myers Shupe. Henry and Sophia Shupe moved to Liberty Township, Warren County, Iowa in 1858 along with Henry’s parents and siblings.  Sophia and Henry had four children: Madison, Hiram, Albert J., and Arthur D.  Sophia died on Nov 6, 1865 and is buried in the Shupe Cemetery.  Henry married Lovisa Cooper on May 14, 1866 in Marion County, Iowa.  Their children were: Cora, Oscar J., Lemuel , and Homer O.  Henry, died on April 22, 1873 and was buried in Shupe Cemetery.

VIOLET MAE SHUPE (1904 – 1917)
[Lacona Ledger newspaper, Friday, July 13,1917, front page] In Memoriam- Violet May Shupe, daughter of Jacob Shupe and Rosezella Smith, was born October 20, 1904.  Died July 3, 1917, aged 12 years, 8 months and 13 days. Her sickness lasted just over 2 years.  She leaves to mourn her loss, her mother, six brothers and three sisters, her father having preceded her on February 6, 1915. Violet was a model of patience, always, and every day prayed that she might have strength to keep faithful.  The family wishes to thank all the many callers who have so greatly assisted during this long sickness.  Jesus said suffer little children to come unto me. There’s a friend for children above the bright blue sky.  A friend that never changes and love can never die, while our friends by nature who change with  growing years.  This friend is always worthy the precious name He bears.  Home is the love place for children, heaven is that place.  The funeral service was conducted at the Christian Church, Lacona, by Rev. Hysom.  Interment was made in Shupe cemetery.
[Death Records of Warren County, Iowa 1906-1918] Violet May Shupe was born October 20, 1904 and
died July 3, 1917, age 12 years, 8 months, and 13 days. She died of meningitis and chronic inflammation of the intestine and was buried in Shupe Cemetery.

CLYDIA LEROY SINIFT (Nov 16, 1882 – Sep 4, 1883)
“Clydia Leroy son of J.H. & M.L. Sinift, died Sept 4, 1883, aged 9 months & 19 days” is written on the gravestone of baby, Clyde Leroy Sinift, in Shupe Cemetery. Clyde was the son of James Harvey Sinift (1853-1938) and Mary Lydia Miller Sinift (1858-1916). Clyde was one of five children born to James H. and Mary L. Sinift.  Another brother, James Edward Sinift, was born and died in1898 and buried in Shupe Cemetery. There was also a brother, William Orval Sinift, who was born and died in 1879, buried in Hendrickson Cemetery, Warren County, along with his grandparents, Adam and Elizabeth Sinift.  A brother, Samuel Sinift, and a sister, Lelia M. Sinift, lived to adulthood. Both parents, James H. and Mary L. Sinift are buried in Shupe Cemetery.

JAMES EDWARD SINIFT (Nov 26, 1898 – Nov 28, 1898)
“James Edward, son of J.H. & M.L. Sinift died Nov 28,1898, aged 2 days” is written on the gravestone of baby, James E. Sinift, in Shupe Cemetery.  He was the fourth son of James Harvey Sinift and Mary Lydia Miller Sinift, but lived to be only two days old.  His parents and his older brother, Clyde Leroy, who lived 9 months, were also buried in Shupe Cemetery.

JAMES HARVEY SINIFT (Aug 11, 1853 – Dec 23, 1938)
[Lacona, Iowa 1856-2006, by the Lacona Heritage Committee, 2006, P.250] James Harvey Sinift was the oldest son of a Civil War veteran. “Harve” was born August 11, 1853 in Wapello County, Iowa.  His father, Adam, was a private in Company F, 7th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He served three years during the Civil War and was with Sherman on his march to the sea. Harve’s mother was Elizabeth (Edgar) Sinift.  They lived and farmed southeast of Liberty Center in Liberty Township.  Harve had two brothers, John and Ellsworth, and two sister, Martha and Belle.  On September 1, 1878 Harve married Mary Lydia Miller, the daughter of Nathan and Elzinah Miller. Harve and Mary Lydia lived in New Virginia for two years and in Milo for seven years before moving to the farm two miles west of Lacona that belonged to Mary Lydia’s mother. They were the parents of five children: three boys who died as infants; one son, Samuel Sinift; and a daughter, Lelia.  Sam married Dacre Fawcett, and they had a son, Maurice.  Sam and Dacre farmed his father’s land southeast of Liberty Center, Sam died in 1946 and Dacre in 1970.  Lelia attended Rabbit Ridge School, but had to quit school at the end of eighth grade to care for her mother and cook for her father.  Mary Lydia died in 1916 and Harve in 1938.  Harve continued to live on the farm with his daughter Lelia and her husband Harold Mitchell until his death.  – submitted by Don Mitchell

MARY LYDIA SINIFT (July 23, 1858 – Jan 24, 1916)
[The Lacona Ledger newspaper, Feb 4, 1916, front page, col.1] Mary Lydia Miller was born in Keokuk County, Iowa, July 23, 1858 and when two years old, came to Warren County, where she grew to womanhood.  September 1, 1878, she was married to James Harvey Sinift.  To this union five children were born, William Orval, Samuel Glenwood, Clyde Leroy, James Edward, Lelia Marie; three of which passed away in infancy leaving Samuel and Lelia to comfort their parents.  She professed faith in her Savior and was baptized into the church of the Brethren during the summer of 1881, and by a consistent life manifested a call for the cause of the Master and a warmth of devotions to the church.  She was a kind mother and a loving companion.  Her affliction was of long duration and was borne with Christian fortitude.  Realizing her physical condition she manifested a complete submission to our Heavenly Father’s will and passed away Monday, January 24, 1916, in the triumphs of a living faith, age 57 years, 9 months, and 1day. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. W. W. Folger, of Ankeny, Iowa, and the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Shupe Cemetery.
[Death Records of Warren County, Iowa 1906-1918]  Mary Lydia Sinift was the daughter of Nathan Miller and Elzina Shupe.  She died of cancer on January 24, 1916, age 57 years, 6 months, 1 day, and was buried in Shupe Cemetery on January 26, 1916.

CHARLES C. STEMEN (Nov 17, 1853 – May 8, 1939)
Charles Christian Stemen was born in Allen County, Ohio on November 17,1853, the second son of John Bertram Stemen and Mary Jane Myers Stemen.  When Charles was twelve, his father died. His mother, Mary Jane, married Joel Fogle and the family moved to White Breast Township of Warren County, Iowa in 1864. Charles began farming and married Lucetta Brower in Indianola on April 10, 1873. Charles and Lucetta had seven children: Bertha E., Sylvan O., Ross B., Mary E., Bermettie, Emma, and Vera L, however; two children died at a young age: Ross B. at age four and Vera at three months. Lucetta died on July 3, 1893.  Charles married Mrs. Martha Mitchell on August 18, 1897 in Virginia Township of Warren County. Martha’s maiden name was Weaver.  She was first married to Phillip Mitchell, who died May 3, 1896 in New Virginia, Iowa.  Martha and Phillip Mitchell had three children: George F., Ida M., and Jesse L.  Charles and Martha Stemen lived in Virginia Township then moved to Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa around 1903.  Charles was a farmer all his life.  Martha died in1928.  Charles died on May 8, 1939 in Osceola and was buried with his first wife, Lucetta, in Shupe Cemetery, Warren County.

LUCETTA STEMEN (Dec 13, 1851 – July 3, 1893)
Lucetta Brower was born December 13,1851, the daughter of Enoch Brower and Elzina Shupe. Lucetta had a brother, Emanuel, and a sister, Cynthia. Their father, Enoch, died June 7, 1854, when Lucetta was three years old.  Her mother married Nathan Miller, on Aug 23, 1857 in Allen County, Ohio and that same year the family, as well as Elzina’s parents, Jacob and Cynthia Shupe, all moved to Warren County, Iowa.  Lucetta married Charles Christian Stemen in Indianola, Iowa on April 10, 1873.  They had seven children: Bertha Ethel 1874, Sylvan Oliver 1875, Ross Bertram 1878, Mary Elzina 1879, Bermettie “Mettie” 1884, Emma 1887, and Vera Lucetta 1893. Lucetta died on July 3, 1893, at age 42.  Charles married Mrs. Martha Mitchell on August 18, 1897.  He died on May 8, 1939, at age 86, and was buried beside Lucetta in Shupe Cemetery.

ROSS B. STEMEN (Jan 12, 1878 – Jan 8, 1883)
Ross Bertram Stemen was born January12, 1878 in White Breast Township of Warren County, Iowa, the third child of Charles C. and Lucetta Stemen.  Ross was only four years old when he died on January 8, 1883, missing his fifth birthday by only 4 days.  He was laid to rest in Shupe Cemetery.

VERA L. STEMEN (May 13, 1893 – Aug 17, 1893)
Vera Lucetta Stemen was born on May 13,1893, the seventh child of Charles C. and Lucetta Stemen.  Vera only lived on earth to be three months old.  Her mother, Lucetta, died on July 3, 1893 and little Vera died on August 17, 1893.  Vera was buried in the same lot with her mother and her father who died May 8, 1939.
