History of Gravity, Iowa. Written by Mrs Frank (Lena) Ambrose. Published at Rockwell City, Iowa, November 1, 1970. p 2 "Early Beginning. The town of Gravity is about six miles northwest of Bedford, Iowa. Bedford is the Taylor County seat. It was the summer and fall of 1881 that surveyors first set their compasses and drove stakes for the town site of Gravity. The land upon which the town is now located was purchased from Mr Eichelberger. S.F. Taylor and Mr. Perkins surveyed the lots. Taylor Brothers sold them. The location for the town was first talked of being placed where the small country store of Ladoga stood for many years. However, it was finally decided to place it nearer the center of Washington township. The town was named after the Old Gravity Post Office situated 1 1/2 miles west. It was an old landmark, having stood there for many years." |
