Maloy, Flavel Baird -
Flavel Baird Maloy of Mt. Ayr died
May 27, 1987 at the Ringgold County Hospital after a final illness of one day. He
was born to C.I.
and
Alice Baird Maloy in a log cabin south of Delphos,
Ia. on January 7, 1892.
Reared
on a farm in Middle Fork township, Ringgold County, he was educated at a
country school across the "White Way" road from the
home,
attended Clearfield High School, and was graduated from West High School in Des
Moines, Ia.
On
November 18, 1912, he married Irene Wilkinson of Mt. Ayr at St. Joseph, Mo. They were privileged to celebrate their 70th
wedding
anniversary in 1982. The couple made their home on a farm north of Redding,
Ia., until 1926 when a tornado destroyed
their
farmstead and "blew" them into Redding, where F.B. owned and operated
the Redding Oil Co. with Graver Wright. In 1940 they
moved
to a Mt. Ayr home where the couple remained until
Irene's death in 1983 and where he continued to reside until his death.
In
Mt Ayr, F.B. founded, with Glen Dixon, the Mt. Ayr Livestock Market and the pair also acquired and
operated a substantial farm
and
cattle business in Clinton township. He continued to trade cattle and manage
the farm until his retirement in 1973. A man of long
experience
and sound judgment, his views on farm and business matters were sought until
his death by men more than half a century
his
junior.
F.B.'s
long life and good health were a result of his simple tastes and active
interest in people of all ages in his community. After
Irene's
death, he was able to remain at home with the caring assistance of Vivian
Pollock, Roxie Trullinger and Earl Schardein, all
of
Mt. Ayr and many good friends and relatives.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two sisters, Elva who died as a
child, and Bernice Lynch who died in 1984, two sons,
Jack
who died in infancy, and Flavel Baird
"Bill" Maloy, Jr. who died a naval casualty
of World War II, a son-in-law, Edward Carr, and
a
step-granddaughter, Jeanne Bush.
He
is survived by his daughter, Marian Hughes and her husband James of Lenox,
three grandsons, of Fairfield, Ia., two grandsons
Edward
and David Carr of Spencer, five nieces and one nephew, including Kathleen Freed
and Barbara Seiffert and her husband of
rural
Redding, a former daughter-in-law, Ila Holmes and her
husband of Des Moines, three step granddaughters and their husbands,
Mary
Walter of Lenox, Peggy Tripp of Kent, and Kathy Azinger of Fort Madison, Ia., and 13 step great grandchildren.
F.B.
was a life-lone member and supporter of the United Methodist Churches of
Redding and Mt. Ayr, a 50 year member of the Faith
Lodge
No. 179, Masonic Order, and the Za Ga Zig Shrine of Des Moines, and
numerous farm and political organizations. Reared in an
era
when a high school education was not common and a college degree rare, he was
widely read and substantially self-educated and
took
a keen interest in politics, business and farm financial issues and local
concerns.
These,
together with his devotion to the doings of his extended family, and his
interest in sports, especially baseball, kept him active
until
the last day of his life. He was a noted pitch player and raconteur who
elevated good conversation to high art and it is perhaps this
quality
which will be most sorely missed by his family and many friends.

Scott,
Helen -
Two
deaths - both ending in lakes occurred in Taylor County last week. One was the
result of a natural death, and the other, was
the
result of an automobile accident.
Helen
Scott, 71, of Sheridan, Mo., was found dead Tuesday, Sept. 8, near the dam of
Lake of Three Fires State Park north of
Bedford.
Five days later, the body of Donald Dean Swank, 42, of Lenox was discovered in
an overturned pickup truck on the
edge
of Wilson Lake south of Lenox.
The
death of Mrs. Scott was attributed to natural causes (possibly a heart attack),
according to the Taylor County Sheriff's Department.
Her
body was discovered approximately 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept 8, along the Lake of
Three Fires dam on the south edge of the
lake.
State
officials were called to the scene to investigate for possibilities of foul
play, but the investigation and autopsy indicated that Mrs. Scott possibly died
of a heart attack and then fell into the lake, according to the sheriff's
department.
Mrs.
Scott's vehicle was parked at the east end of the dam no more than 100 yards
from where the body was discovered by Park
Ranger
Ron Jones, the sheriff's department indicated.
The
sheriff's department report indicated that Mrs. Scott died of natural causes
and did not die of drowning. A possible explanation to
the
incident is that she suffered a fatal heart attack while walking along the
lake's edge, then rolled into the water.

Ford pickup about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. The submerged truck was discovered at 8:30 a.m. the next
morning.
Investigations
indicated that Swank apparently lost control of the truck when it was
southbound on a gravel road near Wilson's Lake.
The
driver "swerved for an unknown reason," according to the sheriff's
report, and went into a deep ditch, traveled along an
embankment,
hit a culvert, rolled on its top and became submerged in water on the edge of
the lake. The driver was pinned inside.
