Black, Etta Lillie Recknor -
Funeral
services for Etta L. Black were held Saturday, April 4, 1992 at the United
Methodist Church in Lenox with Rev. Paul Grandon officiating. Burial was at West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.
Etta
Lillie Recknor Black was born on February 27, 1896,
the fourth child of five born to J.P. and Ida Rechnor.
Etta was the last living member of her immediate family. She passed away at the
Lenox Care Center on April 1, 1992 at the age of 96.
Etta
grew up in the Prescott area and attended grade school there. She then moved
with her parents and family to the town of Lenox.
Etta Recknor and Edgar Ross Black were united in marriage
on February 15, 1922, at the Recknor home in Lenox.
After their marriage, Etta and Edgar made their home on a farm south of Lenox
and raised four children, daughter betty, and sons Kenneth, Donald, and
Raymond.
Etta's
husband Edgar preceded her in death on May 21, 1950, after 28 years of
marriage. She remained on the family farm until 1953, when she moved to town.
Etta remained in her home until the summer of 1979, when she moved to the
Sunrise Apartments.
In
January of 1989, she became a resident of the Lenox Care Center and remained
there until her death.
Etta
was quite an active lady in her lifetime:
-
She joined the Methodist Church in 1918, and remained a member until her death.
During this time, until she became a resident of the Care Center, she was
continually active in church activities, attending church and Sunday School
each week. After becoming a resident of the Care Center, she enjoyed listening
to the taped church services on her headset. In the early days of the church,
she was a
member
of the Priscillas and most currently, the United
Methodist Women. Etta was active in the women's circles and was one of the
church quilters for many years.
-
She was one of the first cooks at the Lenox High School when the lunch program
was initiated.
-
Etta served as a house mother at a fraternity house at Simpson College in
Indianola for several years following the death of her husband. She also spent
one year as a house mother at a resort in Yellowstone Park.
-
She very much enjoyed playing card games of all kinds - canasta, Rook, spoons,
kings in the corner, pitch. She was a member of a card playing group of ladies
and enjoyed teaching her grandchildren how to play. After moving to the Sunrise
Apartments, she participated in
the
card playing activities held there.
-
Etta was a "Blue Lady" with the Women's Auxiliary, volunteering at
the local hospitals and selling poppies.
-
Etta liked to do her fancy work - crocheting, knitting, embroidery, piecing and
quilting quilts for her family, and did a great job making doll clothes. She
enjoyed teaching her granddaughters to do these things too, and was always interested
in their latest projects.
-
She enjoyed fishing, as well as gathering the nightcrawlers.
-
Etta was quite an artist, drawing in pencil, crayon, and some painting.
-
She toured the country on group tours sponsored by Farm Bureau and was the
prankster of the trips - always pulling pranks and practical jokes on the other
members of the tour.
-
Etta was a much sought after babysitter for most of the "kids" in the
Lenox area. She was known for her ghost stories, which she told with the lights
out, much to the delight the kids.
-
Before moving to the Sunrise Apartments, Etta tended a large garden and enjoyed
her yard and house flowers.
-
Etta's greatest joy was her grandchildren and great grandchildren and keeping up
with their interests and activities Etta was preceded in death by her parents,
her husband Edgar, her sisters, Cailie Bush, Cora
Buxton, Mary Ferguson, and her brother Ernest Recknor.
Those
left to mourn her passing are her daughter Betty Weller and husband Dean of
Bedford; their son Ronald and wife Lori and three children; their daughter
Karen and husband Stan and four children; her son Kenneth and wife Clytha of Lenox; their daughter
Janell;
their son Jim and wife Peggy and two children; their daughter Sheila and
daughter; her son Donald of Lenox and his son Bob; her son Raymond of
Chillicothe, Ill.; his daughter Debbie and husband Jim and two stepchildren;
his step-son Joe and his daughter; as well
as
other relatives and many, many friends.
Her
teaching, practical joking, and friendship will certainly be missed by all
whose lives were touched by Etta.
