Loren
E. Baxter 77 of 2076 N.W. 80th Place, Clive, Iowa passed away of lung disease
Monday, October 26, 1998 at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center. [Born 22 Apr,
1922]
Mr.
Baxter was born in Clearfield. He was a Naval pilot during World War II. He was
awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Navy Cross and Silver Star. He was
united in marriage to Evolue Eleanor Carlson on
November 11, 1944 in Norfolk, Virginia while Loren was in the
service.
He
was a resident in Des Moines for 58 years, where he was a chemical salesman. He
was a member of the First Lutheran Church; Highland Park American Legion;
Masonic Lodge in Clearfield, Iowa; and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine.
He
is survived by his wife, Evolue E. Baxter in Clive; a
son, Rodd Baxter, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Muriel (Jones) Baxter; one
son, Craig Baxter; and one brother, Norman Baxter.
Services
were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 29 at the First Lutheran Church in Des
Moines, Iowa. There will be private memorial graveside burial later in Glendale
Cemetery, Des Moines, Iowa.

Mrs.
Cooper was born August 22, 1933 in Corning, Iowa the daughter of the late Lacey
Barker and Helen Barker.
She
was a homemaker.
Mrs.
Cooper was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Howard Cooper. She is
survived by a daughter, Janice Wilmot
and
a son, Mark Howard Cooper, both of Seale, Alabama, and one brother, Alvin
Barker of Conway, Iowa, six grandchildren, Cory Battisti,
David, Jennifer, and Christy Cooper, Jennifer Pipkins,
and James Wilmot and four great grandchildren.

Leo Durlocker of Amsterdam, Holland passed away Oct. 27 in
Amsterdam after a long bout with cancer.
He
is survived by his wife Mary Ann, two daughters, four sons, and fourteen
grandchildren.
Charles Durlocker lived in Lenox and graduated from Lenox
High School in 1979.
Charles
lives in Dix Hill, NY.
He
is married and has two daughters; Jocelyn Star and Sylvia Rain, 3 and 7 years
old.
He stayed
with several families in Lenox and stayed with the Eberle's at the Lenox Hotel.

Paul Martin (Buck) -
Paul
Martin (Buck) England, the second child of Elmer England and Leona Christie
England was born August 30, 1926 at Clearfield,
Iowa.
He passed away on Nov. 7 at his home near Clearfield.
Upon
graduation from Clearfield High School in 1944 he joined the United States Navy
and served his country for two years.
He
married Mary Lou Votava on August 30, 1947 in
Bedford, Iowa. To this union three children were born, David Craig, Douglas
Keith and Lori Lynn.
Buck
loved farming and spent his life tilling the soil and caring for livestock.
Buck
was an active member of his community. He served on the school board, the
church board, the FmHA county committee and the REA
board. He was also a Calvary Go-Getter 4-H leader for several years and was the
current Grant Township trustee.
Buck
was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Leona, two brothers, Leroy and
Dwight and one sister, Evelyn.
Left
to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Lou, sons Dave and Pam, and Doug and
wife Priscilla, all of Clearfield, daughter Lori Christensen and husband, Dan
of Leon, sisters Maxine Round of Diagonal, Fern Pettingill and husband, John of Magalia, California and
Irene Pankau and husband, Max of Grant City, Missouri;
sisters-in-law Jeane England of Corning and Wilma
Plants and husband Dean of Waverly, Iowa; brother-in-law Burt Haglan of Des Moines, nine grandchildren-Heather England Gaule, Craig England, Steve England, Charlie England, Wade
England, Thaddeus England, Cole Christensen, Garrett Christensen and Connor
Christensen; one great-grandchild, Taylor Gaule; and
many nieces and nephews.
Buck
was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. His grandchildren will
remember Grandpa's candy, the caramels that could always be found in his shirt
pocket. His shirt pocket also contained a folded paper towel that was used for
emergencies such as
cleaning
up spills, wiping runny or bloody noses, or wiping off muddy or greasy little
fingers.
Buck
will also be remembered for his Mr. Fixit qualities—everything from bathroom
carpeting to farm machinery to laundry room
cabinets
to grandkids' vehicles. Buck always seem happy and bounced back from life's
little setbacks with a positive attitude and a smile.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, November 10, 1998 at 10:30 a.m. at the United
Methodist Church at Clearfield, Iowa with the Rev. Alan Rusk officiating.
Music
was provided by Patty Parrish and Kathy Nelson.
Casketbearers were Barry Haglan, Mike Sedlak,
Danny Brown, James Pankau, Sandy England, Marvin Votava, and Lonnie Votava.
Military
graveside rites were provided by Woodside Post #97 of the American Legion of
Clearfield.
Interment
was in the Clearfield Cemetery at Clearfield, Iowa.

Clifford
D. Freshour was born February 1, 1934 to Delmar Olin
and Mildred Cleo (Farris) Freshour in Taylor County.
He lived most of his
life
in Corning, moving to Prescott in 1961.
Clifford
graduated from Corning High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army from
1954 to 1956, stationed in the states and Panama.
Gilford
was married to Nancy Jane Bissell in Prescott, Iowa May 19, 1957. He worked for
Adams County ASCS until 1972 when he began operating his own soil conservation
business.
Clifford
was a member of the 1st Baptist church in Corning, The United Church of Christ
in Prescott, The American Legion, Adams
County
Genealogical Society, the Prescott Fire Dept., serving as chief from 1975 to
1993 and as honorary member from 1994-1998.
Clifford
passed away at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa October
23, 1998.
Survivors
include his wife Nancy, a daughter Jacqi Lynn
(Stephen) Reed of Lenox, Iowa and sons; Kyle Dean (Kelly) Freshour of Lenox,
Iowa
and Kevin Gene (Bev) Freshour of Lenox, Iowa; a
brother Jerry (Sandra) Freshour of Prescott and a
sister Joan Forester of Lincoln, NE; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren
and one step great-granddaughter.
He
was preceded in death by his parents.

was in the Brooks Cemetery. Military rites by the Prescott American Legion Post

services for Wyatt Paul Grimm, age 84, who died at the Madison County Hospital

Burial
was at the North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Services were conducted by the
Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.
Wyatt
Paul Grimm was born to Lloyd and Flo Lovitt Grimm on
October 21, 1914, in Sharpsburg, Iowa. Wyatt grew to manhood in the
Sharpsburg
area. He attended country school and graduated from Sharpsburg Community School
in 1933 where he was a good athlete participating in both baseball and
basketball As a young man he loved hunting and fishing with his father and
brothers.
On
August 6, 1941 he was united in marriage to Arlene Robinson in Maryville,
Missouri, the couple were blessed with a daughter,
Suzanne
Lynn on December 16, 1953.
Wyatt
worked in the Sharpsburg area for Chitty Hardware before being drafted into the
United States Army in 1942. Nine months later he was given a medical discharge
and after six months recuperation time, the couple moved to their present home
in Lenox. Wyatt worked for Lenox Clothiers as a salesman for many years.
In
1960 he became ill and spent four months in an Omaha hospital. Upon his return
home he became selfemployed doing painting and
carpentry
work.
He
and Arlene looked forward to wintering in Florida, something they were able to
do for several years. He was a member of the
Lenox
Christian church for over fifty years.
Survivors
include his wife, Arlene Grimm of Lenox; a daughter, Suzanne Christensen and
husband Gary of Winterset; four grandchildren,
Jennifer
Christensen, of West Des Moines; Cory Christensen and Lacey Christensen both of
Indianola; and Brooke Christensen of Winterset; a brother, Bob Grimm and wife
Marianne of Scottsdale, Arizona; two sisters, Maysel Boltinghouse of Lenox and Mildred Donaldson of Sharpsburg;
a mother-in-law, Lulu Robinson of Lenox; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy John and Helen
Morris of Lenox;
Norma
Cobb of St. Joseph, Missouri; Marjorie Sanders and husband Bill of Norwalk;

He

Funeral
services for Ray Kernen, age 83, who died at the
Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center on Wednesday, November 11, 1998 were held

with Pastor Ruth Melick, officiating.
Burial
was held at the Lexington Cemetery. Services were conducted by the Ritchie
Funeral Home of Bedford.
Kenneth
Raymond Kernen was born to Levi and Lula Humphrey Kernen on August 8, 1915 north of the Lake of Three Fires.
He
attended the Hess Country School (which is now located at the Taylor County
Museum) and graduated from the Bedford Community High School in 1932. On
October 9, 1936 he was united in marriage to Opal Wintermute in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Ray
and Opal made their home in Conway for several years where he owned and
operated a hardware store. During this time he was also
farming
with his father-in-law on a farm located on the Lenox road.
In
1940 he and Opal moved to that farm and continued the farming operation until
1978 when they moved to Bedford. During this
time
Ray attended some classes on sewing machine repair. For many years Ray and Opal
operated a sewing machine repair business from
their
home.
Ray
provided the public address system for the Taylor county Fair for over thirty
seven years. He and Opal loved to square dance and did so for many years
together.
Ray
was a member of the Conway United Methodist Church and the Bedford United
Methodist Church for over fifty years. He served on the Bedford City Council
and was a very active member of the Taylor Masonic Lodge #156, A.F. & A.M.
and the Order of the Eastern Star, Bedford Chapter #228.
Survivors
include a brother, Dale Kernen and wife Beulah of
Conway, two nieces, Sandi Salen and husband Richard
of Bedford; and Sonya
Jones
and husband Roger of Shenandoah; two nephews, Rick Kernen and wife Cathy of Auburn Washington; and Randy Kernen and wife Robin of Conway; four great nephews and three great nieces.
He
is preceded in death by his parents, Levi and Lula and his wife Opal in 1995.

service for Lola Elberta Knox, age 93, who died at
the Clarinda Regional Health Center, on Thursday, November 5, 1998, were held

Lola Elberta Knox was born to John Albert and Rose Belle
Doherty Neville on August 14, 1905, in Argyle which is located is southeast
Iowa.
The family moved to Clearfield when Lola was a child.
She
attended school graduating from Ringgold County at the age of sixteen. She then
attended the State Teacher's College at Cedar
Falls.
Lola became an elementary school teacher where she taught at four different
schools after moving to Lenox in 1943. She later
taught
at both Clearfield and Lenox schools, retiring in 1970.
On
August 30, 1925 she was united in marriage to James Moffett in Creston, Iowa.
Together they would have five children that Lola
would
eventually raise by herself during the Great Depression after James abandoned
the family.
On
May 29, 1945 she was united in marriage to Roy J. Manroe in Lenox, Iowa. Together they would share sixteen years of marriage
before
Roy died on October 21, 1961. Later she married Harold Knox on October 18, 1963
in Knoxville, Iowa. In 1991 she moved to Gravity living alone for a short time
before moving in with her daughter, Darlene. Lola was able to live with her
daughter in Gravity until her health required her to enter the Bedford Nursing
& Rehab Center.
Lola
was a long-time member of the Lenox United Methodist Church.
Survivors
include two sons, Delbert William (Bill) Moffett and wife Shirley of Littleton,
Colorado; Darrell Earl Moffett and wife Anna
Mae
of Salton Sea Beach, California; two daughters, Thelma Darlene Manroe and Delores Ambrose both of Gravity; twelve grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren;
and four great-great grandchildren; along with several step grandchildren; step greatgrandchildren and step great great grandchildren.
She
is preceded in death by her parents, John and Rose; three husbands; a son,
James Edward Moffett; a brother, Roth Neville; a sister, Reva Parkhurst; and a grandchild.

Treva Pierce, daughter of Walter and Mabel Boltinghouse was
born February 6, 1917, in Taylor County, Iowa.
Treva grew up near Lenox and graduated from Diagonal High School. Her marriage to Hal
H. Pierce took place in December of 1937.
Following
marriage they farmed near Lenox. Treva later worked
for Sheridan Egg Company for twenty years. After Hal passed away July 6, 1984, Treva moved to Lenox where she continued to work at
Sheridan's for a number of years until she retired. Treva
was
a member of the Methodist Church in Clearfield.
Surviving
are one daughter, JoAnne Durrett of Des Moines; one
son, Mick Pierce and his wife, Kathy, of Elk Horn; one sister,
Bernadine Routh and her husband, Delbert, of Diagonal; four
granddaughters, Vicki Weibelhaus and husband Tony of
Des Moines; Jennifer and Jessica Pierce of Elk Horn; and Leann Hensley of
Nevada, Missouri; two grandsons, Doug Pierce of Nevada, Missouri and
Nick
Pierce of Elk Horn; three great grandsons, Joey and Eric Burkheimer of Des Moines, of Des Moines, and Dakota Pierce of Nevada;
two
great-granddaughters Mercedes and Payton Hensley of Nevada; and two nieces Delberta Cronbaugh and her daughter, Kisha of Lenox and Debbie Welling and husband, Keith
and their children Clint and Kylee of Indianola.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two sons; Richard and

Reynolds, Lydia K DeBose -
Funeral
Services for Lydia K. Reynolds, age 91, who died at Mercy Hospital in Corning,
on Monday, November 2, 1998, were held at the Ritchie Funeral Home on Thursday,
November 5, 1998 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Dena Woldruff officiating. Burial was at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr.
Services were conducted by the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.
Lydia DeBose Reynolds was born to Achilles and Sarah Coe
Key on March 2, 1907 on a farm northeast of Sharpsburg. She was a life-long
area
resident growing up and attending school until 1922. She then moved to Omaha where she was employed
at various restaurants and worked in the candy department at Brandise. Later she owned and operated a cafe and donut
shop.
In
1945 she moved to Lenox where she owned and operated a dress shop known as
"Lydia's" for several years.
On
May 16, 1950 she was united in marriage to Russell Reynolds. The couple lived
in Lenox until 1960 when they moved to Clarinda where they were both employed
by the State Mental Hospital. They were both members of the Clarinda Christian
Church. In 1969, after Russell's death, Lydia moved back to Lenox where she
lived the remainder of her life. Lydia was an avid bingo player. She usually
played
six to seven nights a week, often
traveling the "bingo circuit" to do so. She was known as a generous
person who loved to help
other
people, especially her family. Some of the other things Lydia enjoyed where her
lawn ornaments, sewing, embroidery and carpentry work.
Survivors
include three sisters, Hattie Tackett Fuller of Clarinda; and Eunice Eller and
Mary Terry, both of Lenox; and a step-daughter, Rose Marie Campbell and husband
Larry of Gainsville, Missouri; several
step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren along
with
many nieces and nephews.
She
is preceded in death by her husband, Russell; her parents, Achilles and Sarah;
four sisters; three brothers; three half-sisters; six half brother and two step
sons.

lived his early years in Nebraska moving to Taylor County in 1941 and then
moved to their current farm on the Adams and Taylor
County
line in 1945.
Lloyd
was a member of the Fairview United Church of Christ, the Masonic Lodge of Corning
and the Adams County Shrine Club.
Lloyd
passed away October 17, 1998 at the age of 80 at the Lenox Cafe Center in
Lenox, Iowa.
He
is survived by his wife Esther, two sons; Ronald (Laurie) of Lenox and Russell
of Hopedale, MA; two daughters; Shirley (John)
Boswell
of Corning and Jenice (Randy) Simmons of Corning;
Four brothers Tom (Alma) Travis and Mark (Mary) Travis of Riverdale, Nebraska
and Marion (Wilma) Travis and Bruce (Betty) Travis of Creston; 18 grandchildren
and 8 great grandchildren.
He

Gladys
Pearl Thompson Van Camp was born to Troy and Cora Parks Thompson on July 24,
1912 near Bedford, Iowa. Gladys grew up
attending
school in the Ross township area graduating from the Bedford Community High
School.
She
was a teacher for two years in Gay Township prior to her marriage on January
21, 1933 to Glenn Van Camp.
Gladys
and Glenn spent most of their lives in or near Bedford except for a short time
when they went to Mesa, Arizona for Glenn's health.
Gladys
worked at Thompson's Department Store, but most of her working years were spent
as Office manager for Iowa light and power, where she remained until her
retirement. Gladys liked music, flower gardening, traveling, and entertaining.
She
entered the Bedford Nursing and Rehab Center where she lived for four years.
Although
Gladys had no children of her own, she was very interested in the lives of her
nieces and nephews and their families. She loved going to all family
gatherings.
At
an early age she was baptized into the Lord's family and became a member of the
Berea Church of Christ. In later years, she attended the United Methodist
Church in Bedford.
Survivors
include her sister Dorothy Thompson Keith and husband James of Clarinda; two
nephews, Robert Marley and wife Pat of
Sheridan,
Missouri; and Ken Keith and wife Judy of Sioux City, Iowa; two nieces, Lisa
Marley Coulter and husband Bill of Lexington, Missouri; and Joyce Keith Gietl and husband Jerry of Englewood, Colorado; along with
several great and great-great nieces and nephews.
She is
preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Cora; her husband Glenn in May of
1971; her sister Hazel; a brother-in-law, Carl Marley, two nieces, Jana Lynn
Keith and Caye Cross Keith and one nephew, Kenneth

Mosby Vanderlinden, daughter of George E and Grace
(Simmons) Pinckney was born Oct. 26, 1909 at Macksburg,
Iowa and entered into rest Nov. 7, 1998 at the Creston Nursing & Rehab
Center at the age of 89 years and 11 days.
She
attended school in Macksburg, graduating in 1928.
On
Dec. 14, 1932 Myrtle was united in marriage with Ernest Mosby in Winterset,
Iowa. Five children were born to this union. On October 20, 1979, Myrtle
married Milo Vanderlinden in Creston, Iowa.
Myrtle
was a homemaker and a nurse. She worked at Green's Nursing Home, and as an LPN
at Greater Community Hospital, Creston, She was a member of the First Baptist
Church, Creston Crestwood Club, and
Creston American Legion Auxiliary.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; a daughter, Evelyn; a
granddaughter Barbara Freeman; one great-grandson; 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
Myrtle
is survived by her children; Darlene (Harry) Freeman of Lenox, Iowa; Andrew
(Joan) Mosby of Dewey, Arizona; Robert (Mary
Jane)
Mosby of Gretna, Nebraska and Virginia (Dean) Eighme of Overland Park, Kansas; two step-sons, Bob (Jan) Vanderlinden of

Hazel
Page DeWald was born to Abraham and Louie Ida Dalton
Page on October 25, 1904 in Lenox, Iowa. In 1920 she was united in
marriage
to Lawrence DeWald in Brownsville, Texas. The couple
shared fifty-one years together until his death in 1977. Then in 1986 she was
united in marriage to Fred Westberry.
Hazel
spent the early years of her life in the Lenox area moving to Texas where she
resided until her death.
She
was a nurse until her retirement in 1972.
Survivors
include her husband Fred Westberry of Houston, Texas;
a daughter, Patricia Lou Vernor and husband Bruce of
Herndon,
Virginia;
three grandchildren, Marcia Vernor of Arlington,
Texas; Jan Vernor Howard of Stockton, California; and
Eileen Vernor Drutchas of
Taylor, Michigan; three greatgrandchildren, Griffin,
Reilly and Ian.
She
is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Lawrence DeWald; one brother and five sisters.
She will be greatly missed by her
family, relatives and friends.
