Funeral Services for Donna King, age 65 of Bedford, who died Sunday, February 26, 2006
at Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska were held Thursday, March 2, 2006 at
10:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Interment was held in the Fairview
Cemetery in Bedford. Memorials can be given in Donna's name. Please leave a message of

Donna Lee (Gamel) King was born January 13, 1941 in rural Bedford, Taylor County
Iowa the daughter of Glenn Raymond Gamel and Lillian Opal (Grubb) Gamel. She grew up
in the Taylor County area attending school much of the time under the tutelage of
her teacher-mother. On June 12, 1960 she was united in marriage to David King in the
King family home in rural Bedford, Iowa. Although she held many jobs outside the home,
the majority of her work was working side by side with David on the farm. Plowing,
cultivating, bailing hay while also taking care of the home and raising two children. They
were blessed with the birth of a daughter Vicky and son Carl.
Donna and David lived in the Bedford area most of their lives. She was further blessed
with the birth of six grandchildren, Heather, Joshua, Jordan, Trevor, Caitlin and Kylee.
By far her biggest enjoyment was her grandchildren, cooking for them and taking MANY
pictures which she shared with visitors.
The couple loved to travel and garden, raising several types of flowers and vegetables.
She enjoyed sharing the bounty of her garden with friends and family. Being ever frugal
and letting nothing go to waste, she canned and froze the remainder for later use.
Animals also played a large part in her life. She was a nurse to strays, sick farm
animals, which she always named, and she seldom lost a "patient". Her constant
companion was always a lap, "guard" dog.
Left to cherish Donna's memory are her loving husband of almost 46 years,
David King of Bedford; a daughter Vicky Spencer and husband Calvin of Bedford; a
son Carl King and wife Shannon of Webster City, her mother Lillian Gamel of Grant
City, Missouri, a mother in law Opal King of Bedford; a brother Galen Gamel and wife
Joyce of Grant City Missouri; six grandchildren, Heather, Trevor and Caitlin Spencer,
Joshua, Jordan and Kylee King and many nieces and nephews and numerous other
family and friends.
Preceding Donna in death by her father Glen Gamel and her father-in-law, Frank
King and several other family members.

Larsen, Cleota Horton -
Cleota Larsen, 74, of Clearfield, died February 22nd, 2006 at Clearview
Nursing Home in Clearfield, Iowa.
Cleota, daughter of William C. and Grace (Short) Horton, was born March 14,
1931 in Conway, Iowa. The family moved to Clearfield where Cleota grew up and
attended school. She graduated Clearfield High School in 1949.
Cleota was united in marriage to Boyd Larsen on October 29th, 1949. To this
union four children were born. Although Boyd and Cleota moved into Clearfield
in 1986, they continued to farm south of Clearfield until 1998. She was a member of
the United Methodist Church, Methodist Women's Circle, 17 Club and numerous card
clubs. Cleota was a great sports enthusiast, enjoying the many sporting activities
of her grandchildren.
Survivors include her four children and eight grandchildren: Kenny Larsen
& wife Dixie of Clearfield, (sons Chris and Logan), Carol Worthington of Kyle,
TX, (daughter Rachel and son Wade), Colleen Gower & husband Fred of Olathe, KS,
(son Josh, daughters Lindsay Carter and Vanessa), Keith Larsen & wife Sherry of
Olathe, KS, (daughter Lindsey Fowler); sister Kay Douglas (husband Lanny) of
Lenox, IA; brother-in-law, Jim Larsen and wife Eleanor of Decatur, AL; sisters-in-law
Dorothea Larsen, Darlene Larsen, Helen Larsen and Carol Lee Fisher (husband Ray)
all of Clearfield; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Boyd, brothers
Robert, John and Vernon Horton.
Services for Cleota were held Sunday at the Clearfield United Methodist Church
with Rev. Gerry Kahler and Rev. Tim Maxa officiating. Burial was in the
Clearfield Cemetery in Clearfield. Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral
Home of Clearfield was in charge of arrangements.

Oxley, Lloyd Irvin -
Funeral services for Lloyd Oxley, age 82, of Mount Ayr, formerly of Bedford, who died
Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at Greater Community Hospital in Creston, will be held
Saturday, March 4, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. at the Shearer Cemetery. Visitation
was held Friday from 3 to 8 with the family greeting friends from 7 to 8.
Memorials can be given in Lloyd's name.
Lloyd Irvin Oxley was born April 13, 1923, in Ross Township, near Bedford, Iowa the
son of Ethan Irvin Oxley and Minnie Belle (Guthrie) Nowels Oxley. He grew up attending
school at Ross Township No 5. Lloyd's father died when he was only 11 so he had to
grow up at an early age, and take over the family farm operation. On May 5, 1945, he was
united in marriage to Leona Woldruff in Bedford. The couple continued to farm
until 1972, when he and Leona moved to Odebolt, Iowa to work at a cattle ranch and
feed lot as a ranch hand. He also worked in Grand River, and Guthrie Center, Iowa and
Minatare, Nebraska and Hannibal, Missouri. In 1985, upon his retirement, they moved
to Mount Ayr where they continued to live until his death.
Horses were his passion and life. He rode and broke horses often for other people
and enjoyed spending time working with tack and saddles. He loved being around his
family and was always joking with his grandkids; or just about anybody. After he retired,
he liked watching his son Steve working on tractors.
He and Leona would travel locally to country music shows in the area. He enjoyed
playing cards, with 10 point pitch being his favorite game, and was lucky quite often!
Left to cherish Lloyd's memory are his loving wife of over 60 years, Leona Oxley of
Mount Ayr; two sons, Carrol Oxley and wife Marilyn of Clarinda; and Steven Oxley and
wife Carol Lea of Mount Ayr; a granddaughter Nicole; a, step-granddaughter Lori;
two step-grandsons, Rick and Randy; nine great grandchildren and two great-great-
grandchildren,
Preceding Lloyd in death were his parents and two half-sisters, Mildred Smith
and Wilma Majors.

Palmer, Clifford Earl -
Funeral services and Masonic rites for Clifford Palmer, age 79, of Brooks, who
died Thursday, February 16, 2006, at his home, were held Tuesday, February 21,
2006 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nodaway United Methodist Church.
Interment was held in the Prairie Rose Cemetery with military rites accorded by
the Ourcq Post No, 117 of the Corning American Legion. Memorials can be directed

Clifford Earl Palmer was born September 4, 1926, in Corning, Iowa the son of Earl
Palmer and Ada (Richards) Palmer. He grew up attending the Nodaway High
School, graduating with the Class of 1943. On November 22, 1944, he answered
the call to serve his country entering the United States Army serving in Europe
during World War II. He was awarded the Victory Medal, European-African-Middle
Eastern Theater Ribbon, two Overseas Service Bars, Army of Occupation Medal
Germany and the Good Conduct Medal, being honorably discharged on August 18,
1946. On July 23, 1947, he was united, in marriage to Darlene Haley in Corning.
The couple was blessed with the birth of three children, Clifford Dale, Marvin
Clyde and Donna Elaine.
After Cliff's discharge from the United States Army he and Darlene farmed on
various farms in Adams County near Nodaway and Brooks. He was also a
substitute US Rural Mail Carrier from 1946 to 1952. In 1957, they moved to a farm
south of Brooks located in Section 19 of Jasper Township. Together they
purchased this farm and continued to live there.
Cliff enjoyed all sports, and during his high school years, he played basketball
and baseball. He continued to play after graduation for the Nodaway Town Team for
many years. He was an active man who enjoyed deer hunting and being outdoors.
He had a tremendous sense of humor and loved being around people. Even with his
illness he said, "if I can get one laugh a day ..... it was worth it." He seldom missed
any of his children or grandchildren's events throughout the years.
Cliff also kept active in the American Legion Post, VFW, ZA-GA-ZIG Shrine and
Iroquois Masonic Lodge No. 590.
Left to cherish Cliff's memory are his loving wife of 58 years, Darlene Palmer of
Brooks; two sons, Clifford Dale Palmer of Omaha, Nebraska; and Marvin Clyde
Palmer and wife Michelle of Corning; a daughter, Donna Elaine Palmer of Corning; a
sister, Dorothy Greenway of Ada, Oklahoma; eleven grandchildren; three great
grandchildren; and many friends.
Preceding Cliff in death were his patents Earl and Ada Palmer; and three sisters,
Barbara, Doris Berkey and Rowena Rhamy.

Reed, Iola Fern DeVault -
Graveside Services for Iola Reed, age 93 of Bedford, who died Friday, March 3, 2006 at
the Clarinda Regional Health Center were held Monday, March 6, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at
the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Visitation celebrating Iola's life was held Monday
from 9:00 to 11:00 at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford, where coffee and cookies were
served along with the sharing of many memories. Memorials can be directed to the Bedford

Iola Fern Reed was the second child born to Carl and Eldora (Schradter) DeVault
on September 8, 1912, in Blockton, Iowa. She grew up attending school in Blockton,
graduating with the Class of 1929. After graduation she and a girlfriend went to Des
Moines to find work. Both girls found work with a family needing a cook and
housekeeper, however, they had three spoiled children, and the girls only lasted three
days!
In the fall of 1929, she started college in Maryville, Missouri attending for two
years, and graduating with a lifetime Teacher's Certificate. Her first year of
teaching school was in Benton, Iowa and she was only 18 years old and
received $90 a month, paying $20 a month for room and board. She met Roy
Raymond Reed and the couple was united in marriage on March 8, 1935, in St. Joseph,
Missouri at a cousin's home. Roy and Iola made a home adjacent to Roy's parents. On
June 14, 1936, a daughter Agatha June was born in Blockton, in a small house by the
Platte River. Times were hard and when Agatha was 14 months old, they went west to
seek better employment, returning in the fall to Bedford. Finding no work, they moved to
Council Bluffs, and returned to Blockton where Billy Carl was born on October 30,1938,
and Ronnie Ray on October 10, 1940. In 1941, the family moved to Bedford with Roy
working for the Iowa State Highway Department, developing the Rest Areas on
the Interstates.
In 1943, Roy was called to enlist in the United States Army Air Force. Iola was left
with three small children, two cows, some pigs and chickens, and a Model A Ford. Roy was
gone for 1 year and 9 months, and to survive, Iola worked the five acre truck patch and at
the Bedford HyVee, where she worked for 10 years. Iola also managed the concessions at
the Lake of Three Fires for nine years. She also owned and operated Iola's Snack Bar
across from the Bedford School for several years, where she made many lasting
friendships. Because of Roy's employment with the State Highway Department, the
couple moved many times to various locations to be near his work. From 1965 to 1971, Iola
and Roy moved to Adair where she worked as a clerk in a grocery store and also cooked
at the Adair Nursing Home. In 1971, they moved to Leon where she worked as a clerk in
the discount store until 1975. In 1976, upon their retirement, she and Roy moved back to
Bedford and enjoyed traveling for many years across the United States.
Iola served as Past-President of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a tremendous
supporter and volunteer for the Congregate Meals for 13 years, receiving two Service
Awards for Volunteering from the Governor of the State of Iowa.
She was also a long-time member of the Bedford Christian Church.
Left to cherish Iola's memory are her daughter Agatha and her son Billy; two
daughters-in-law, Karen Reed and Barbara Harms; six grandchildren, Mark Norton
and wife Brenda, Jason Norton, Robin Mooney, Todd Carlton Reed and wife
Candice, Kristi Johnson and husband Jim; and Kerri Greenberg and husband
Jordan; eight great grandchildren; two nephews and many friends.
Preceding Iola in death are her husband Roy Raymond Reed in 1980; a son Ronnie Ray
Reed in 1993; a son-in-law, Dean Norton; her parents and a sister Opal Rupp.

Ware, William Wallis -
Funeral Services for Bill Ware, age 88 of Bedford who died Tuesday, February 21,
2006 at the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center were held Friday, February 24, 2006 at
10:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Interment was held in the Ohio
Cemetery in Burlington Junction, Missouri. Memorials can be directed to the Bedford

William Wallis Ware was born June 12, 1917 in Burlington Junction, Missouri
the son of James Corfield Ware and Carrie Kay (Crane) Ware. He grew up attending
school and graduating from the Burlington Junction High School. On December 25, 1938,
in a Christmas Day Ceremony, Bill was united in marriage to Dorothy Walton at
the Methodist parsonage in Nebraska City, Nebraska. The couple farmed in the
Burlington Junction area for many years. They moved south of Hopkins and farmed
there for twelve years, moving to the Bedford area where they farmed until their
retirement in 1978. Bill loved to farm, he enjoyed raising cattle and had a true passion
for being a steward of the land. He was very concerned with conservation and in
every instance, left the land he farmed in better condition than when he found it - even
when he rented land! Bill was one of the first in the area to raise soybeans as a
grain crop. After retirement, Bill and Dorothy spent the next several years in the
Savannah and St. Joseph area during most of the year. Summer time was spent at
Woodland Park, Colorado, which was a special joy for them.
After retirement, Bill worked in real estate and kept ties with agriculture by taking
surveys, for the government, gardening and helping his brother with the, farming
operation. He had to 'keep his hands in the dirt'. Bill, and Dorothy were both active
in county extension work.
Together Bill and Dorothy enjoyed travel, and had experienced wonderful vacations in
Europe, England, Alaska, and many points in the United States as well as some winter
time in Texas. Of course, their summers in Colorado, escaping the hot, humid Midwest
weather were always a treat. Bill loved to play cards, especially with Dorothy, Rickie, Linda,
Amy, Diane ~ in other words ~ the women of the family!
Left to cherish Bill's memory are his loving wife of 67 years, Dorothy Ware of
Bedford; two sisters, Theodora Meek of College Springs; and Dorothy Derderian of Lake
Forrest, Illinois; three children Dave Ware and wife Rickie of Mountain Home, Idaho;
Mick Ware and wife Diane of Bedford; and Linda Ware of Santa Fe, New Mexico; six
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Preceding Bill in death were his parents; four sisters; three brothers; an infant
daughter and one grandchild.

Whitaker, Lawrence John -
Lawrence John Whitaker was born August 21, 1911 at Sheffield, IA, the son of John
Baker and Anastacia Rose (Kobliska) Whitaker. He entered into rest March 7, 2006
at Clarinda Regional Health Center following an extended illness. He was 94 years of age.
Lawrence graduated Bedford High School and pursued an engineering degree at
Northwest Missouri State University. While in Bedford; his family owned the
Garland Hotel. Lawrence and his family spent many years returning to Bedford to assist
in the operation of the family hotel.
On March 13, 1937 at Denver, CO, he married Helen Louise Ramey.
Lawrence served his country during WWII and was honorably discharged from the
US Army. His professional career included thirty-three years as an engineer in the
U.S. Soil Conservation Service. His other lifelong devotion was to the Catholic
Church. He was instrumental in building and the upkeep at Sacred Heart Catholic Church
in Bedford. He remained active in the church until his health failed recently.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; sister, Ollie Sherby; and
brother, Joseph Whitaker.
He is survived by his children: Vickie Steele and husband Rod of Omaha, NE;
Mike Whitaker of Council Bluffs, IA: and Laurie Fuller and husband Scott of
Clearmont, MO: sister, Leona Akeson of Denver, CO; sister-in-law Ruth Whitaker of
Bedford, IA: grandchildren: Jim Steele, Chris Steel, Matt Steele, Dawn Pulliam, Kipp
Wheatley, Emily Wheatley, Alex Barnett, Allison Barnet, Justin Fuller and Kristin Fuller;
great grandchildren Ben Stelle, Kristen Stelle, Drew Steele, Noah Steele, Lou
Mason, Morgan Pulliam, and Halle Holman and many other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, March 10, 2006 at Sacred Heart Catholic
Church with interment at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.
Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart or the Garland Hotel Restoration Fund.

Wilson, Wendell Harvey -
Wendell Harvey Wilson was born to Harve and Mabel Wilson on a farm in Platte
Township Taylor County on January 4, 1924 and died at his home in Arvada, Colorado of
a heart attack on November 24, 2005. He graduated from Lenox High School and
married Bonnie Hagee. They were parents of three children, Steve, Melody and Danny.
He served in World War II on the island of Bougainville in the South Pacific. After
being discharged from the Army he attended college and earned a Bachelor of Arts
Degree in education and later a Master Degree. He was principal at Greeley High
School in Greeley, Colorado and at Alamedo High School in Lakewood, Colorado.
Graveside services were held at Fairmont Cemetery in East Denver on December 2,
2005. A four member Army Honor Guard out of Colorado Springs were there to take
part in the service in memory of Wendell's service during World War II. Taps were
played during the flag ceremony.
Survivors are his wife June of 23 years and her daughter, Patricia Johnson and
family; Wendell's three children Steve, Melody and Danny and grandchildren,
Piper, Page, Gabrielle, Aaron, Andrew, Steve and Angela; his sister Berneeta Wilson
Austin of Mt. Ayr.
Preceding Wendell were his parents, Harye and Mabel Wilson, an older brother,
Randall and a family member, Uncle Edd Wilson.
