Ahnen, George (Oscar) -

Funeral services for George "Oscar" Ahnen were held Saturday, Oct. 15, 1988 at Keating-Lindsay Golden Rule Funeral Home in

Creston with Rev. George W. Campbell officiating. Interment was at Graceland Cemetery, Creston, Ia.

George "Oscar" Ahnen, Moreno Valley, Ca., formerly of Creston, was born December 4, 1948 at Creston, Ia. to Glen Ahnen and

Alma Johnston Smith. He died at his home October 7, 1988 at the age of 39.

He was married February 2, 1983 to Debby Secor in Phoenix, Az.

He was a plumber. He was a resident of Creston until moving to Phoenix in 1979 and later to California.

He was preceded in death by his father and a daughter, Kristina Ahnen.

Those surviving are his wife; two sons, Joseph P. Ahnen, Creston, Dustin Ahnen, Centerville; three daughters, Brandi Ahnen,

Centerville, Jessica and Renae Branch of the home; one brother Bill Stuart and wife Dorothy, Creston; one sister, Mrs. Janice

Shepherd, Creston; and mother, Alma Johnston Smith.

He was preceded in death by father, stepfather and one brother.

Carey, Harold (Bud) -

Funeral services were held for Harold "Bud" Carey were held Saturday, October 8, 1988 at the First Presbyterian Church in Lenox,

Ia. with Rev. Don Fisher officiating. Interment was at East Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Ia.

Harold "Bud" Carey was born July, 24, 1919 near Shannon City, Ia. to Ivan and Mary Andrews Carey. He died October 5, 1988 at

Mercy Hospital in Corning.

He married Myrtle Thompson June 12, 1952 in Davenport, Ia. and she died July 23, 1988.

Bud was a farmer and a Ford dealer in Lenox for many years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Tremont No. 343 AF&AM

and American Legion Parkinson Post #250. He was a veteran of World War II.

Bud is survived by two sons, Jack (wife Julia) of Des Moines and Jim (wife Chris) of Sioux Falls, S.D., two grandsons and two

sisters, Wilma Scott of Fremont, Neb., and Geraldine Smoldt of Palmdale, Ca.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Kenneth.

Services for Veldon O. Cochran, 55, of Alamosa, Co. were held October 7. He was born February 8, 1933, son of Orson T. Cochran

and Angie Clark Cochran.

Survivors include one daughter, Diana, one son Michael, one brother Warren, one sister Veldeva and three grandchildren.

Long, Richard Lee -

A one—truck accident Monday at the 102 River Bridge near Hopkins, Mo., claimed the life of Richard L. Long, 46, of Sharpsburg.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, Long was southbound in a 1972 GMC truck when a front tire blew out. The truck veered off the west edge of Highway 148, struck the corner of the bridge, took out 84 feet of bridge railing and went over the bridge. The truck landed on its top.

Long was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred at 10 a.m.

Long, Richard Lee -

Funeral services for Richard Lee Long were held Thursday, November 3, 1988 at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox with Rev. Don Fisher and Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Burial was at North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Ia.

Richard Lee Long, son of Rayfield and Alice Gray Long, was born November 5, 1941, at Northboro, Ia. He entered into rest on October 31, 1988, at the age of 46 years, 11 months and 26 days.

When a small boy, his family moved to Sharpsburg. He attended the Sharpsburg Elementary and Lenox High School. In 1960 Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy in which he served until March of 1964.

On June 26, 1968 he was united in marriage to Christena Mae Schneider at Maryville, Mo. To this union two children were born: Kimberly Sue and Daren Rae.

Rich loved the outdoors. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a loyal supporter of the Lenox Community School activities, with wrestling and football being his personal favorites.

Richard had been a member of the Taylor County Sheriff's Posse Drill Team led by former Sheriff Leonard Ratliff for a number of years. They traveled many miles to perform at horse shows, rodeos, and ride in parades. He was also a member of the Lenox Stock and Saddle Club, the American Legion, the Saddle Club, the American, the Sharpsburg Volunteer Fire Department and had served as

mayor of Sharpsburg since 1983.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

Those surviving to honor his memory are his wife Christena; his children, Kimberly of Ames, and Daren at home; his mother, Alice of Lenox; brothers Leonard and wife Sarah, Council Bluffs, Raymond and wife Lee of Lincoln, Ne., Ira and wife Irene of Sharpsburg; sisters Zelma and husband Walter Cochran of Elmgreen, Co., Shirley and husband Frank of Osceola, sister-in-law Phyllis Knox of Des

Moines, and a host of other relatives, friends and neighbors.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and friend. He took pride in his children and everything they were a part of. Richard always had time to give a helping hand to others in any way he could. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

May God give his comfort and strength to all who mourn.

Lucas, Loleta Irene -

Lete Lucas, age 71 of Clarinda died October 14, 1988 at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Ne., where she had been a patient since

Sept. 12.

She was born April 12, 1917 in Taylor County, Iowa near Lenox. Her parents were Lester Ira and Beula D. (Stamate) Johnson. She

graduated from Lenox High School in 1935, with academic honors and was selected for normal training.

She was married to Tipton Issac Lucas on December 24, 1935 in Maryville, Mo. They lived and farmed in the Lenox and Bedford

areas until moving to Clarinda in November of 1980.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star #214 and had held most of the offices. She also had done restaurant work and had helped care for people in their own homes.

Survivors include her husband Tip of the home; children Larry Tipton and wife Debora Ann Lucas of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. William

(Judith Jane) Gibson of Branson, Mo., Roderick Allen and wife Bonnie Lucas of Ft. Wayne, In.; seven grandchildren and five great

grandchildren; four step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services were October 17 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with burial in the East Fairview Cemetery at Lenox, Ia.

Miller, Leo Henry (Barney) -

Funeral services for Leo Henry "Barney" Miller were held October 13, 1988 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox, Ia. with Rev.

Gerald Stessman and Rev. Michael Berner officiating. Interment was at North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Ia.

Leo Henry "Barney" Miller was born August 3, 1922 near Prescott, Ia. to Harry and Mae Kouba Miller. He departed this life October 10,

1988 at Mercy Hospital in Corning, Ia. at the age of 66 years, two months and seven days.

Barney was a state, regional and local public power leader for many years and served as superintendent of the Lenox Municipal Light and

Water Works from 1951-1984. He served in the 28th Infantry division during World War II and received the Purple Heart and Combat

Infantry Badge.

Barney was married to Madge Wheeler, and to this union were born three children, Miriam Kathleen, Richard Leo, and James

Patrick "Peach". In 1969 he married Clara Jackson. Barney was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox.

Survivors include his wife Clara, a son Richard (wife Eileen), daughter Miriam (Mrs. John) Narmore, four grandchildren, Michelle Miller Brewer, Melissa Miller, Jeff Narmore and Jennifer Narmore. Also surviving are two brothers Joseph Lawrence Miller of Sigourney, Ia. and Robert J. Stallings of Richland, Wa., and two sisters, Irene (Mrs. Andrew) Bellus, Omaha, Ne., and sister Miriam Clare (Lucille) Miller, Ottumwa; and many relatives and friends.

Barney was a well known Lenox man.

Preceding Barney in death were his parents, Harry and Mae Miller, stepmother Clara Miller, a son Jim Miller, and a brother Paul (Shorty) Miller.

Moffett, Carl -

Carl Hans Moffett, 46, died Thursday evening, Nov. 3 at Research Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. while undergoing cardiac by-pass surgery.

Carl was married to Catherine Mellott of Bedford in 1968.

Surviving are his wife Catherine, children Tammy and Nick; parents Mr. and Mrs. Robert Moffett of Rogers, Ark. and brother Barry Sherman of Tampa, Fla.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 in the rose garden at Unity Village, Kansas City, Mo.

Peck, Harold Spencer -

Services for Harold Spencer Peck, 91, Littleton, Co. were held at St. James Presbyterian Church in Littleton, at Randolph Funeral

Home in Corydon. Burial was at Corydon Cemetery with a Masonic memorial service. Mr. Peck died Oct. 20, 1988.

Harold Spencer Peck, Littleton, Co. was born in Corydon, Wayne County, Ia. on January 23, 1897. He was a graduate of Corydon High

School where he was active in football and excelled in track. He worked for 25 years as a telegrapher and depot agent for C B & Q (Chicago, Burlington and Quincy) Railroad. In 1945, he became office branch manager for State Savings Bank in Sharpsburg and retired after 25 years of service on July 1, 1970. He also had Peck's Insurance until January 1, 1973 when the business was sold to Fred Woolley.

He was married to Coma Jared in 1918. They had one son, Spencer Junior. She died in 1956. He was an ordained elder of the Sharpsburg

Presbyterian Church and served in various church capacities. He was interested in agriculture, raised cattle and maintained a dairy herd on this farm. This led to his involvement in the American Dairymen's Association. He was an active bowler, competing in national tournaments.

He was active in community work and served on the city council, was school treasurer and in the Taylor County Cancer Society.

He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star #264, Lenox, Ia. and has served several terms as Worthy Patron; he is a 70-year member of the Masonic Lodge joining at age 21 and has served as Worshipful Master; is a member of Royal Arch, Bedford, Ia.; Commandery, Creston; Council, Chariton; Scottish Rite, Ft. Smith, Ark. and Scimitar Shrine Temple, Little Rock, Ark.

On December 17, 1966 he married Florence Jones, Stratford, Ia. They had met on a trip to Europe in the summer. They retired to Bella Vista, Ark. in 1973 and became worldwide travelers, the latest, a cruise on the Royal Viking Star to the Republic of China. In 1985 they

moved to Littleton, Co. He is a member of St. James Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife Florence; son Spencer Junior and his wife Carmen, Bellevue, Ia.; three stepdaughters LaVonne Lydin and

husband Gary, Littleton, Co.; Dorothy Jones, Minneapolis, Mn.; Helen Summers, Nashville, Tn.; three granddaughters, Michelle and Nicole

Lydin, Christina Summers; one step granddaughter Carmen Clark and husband Bruce and children, Robin, Brian, Suzanne and Ross;

several nieces nephews and their children. He was preceded in death by wife, Coma, one brother, Louis and wife Marie and one sister, Floy Morrett, husband Ernest

Phillips, Verna Frances Hayes -

Funeral services for Verna F. Phillips were held Tuesday, Nov. 15, 1988 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox with Rev. Gerald J. Stessman officiating. Burial was at East Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Ia.

Verna Frances Hayes, the daughter of James F. and Emma A. Smith Hayes, was born November 15, 1896, southeast of Lenox. She attended Platte Center School and Lenox High School, graduating in 1915.

Prior to her marriage to Fern Phillips on March 10, 1921, Verna taught school for 5-1/2 years. They farmed near Lenox all of their married life. One daughter was born to this union. For the past five years, Verna has resided at the Lenox Care Center. She died on

November 12, 1988 at Mercy Hospital in Corning at the age of 91 years, 11 months and 27 days.

She is survived by her daughter, Velda Smith of Prescott; sister Gertrude Beatty of Lenox; sister-in-law Avis Hayes; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Fern in 1969; two brothers Arthur and Ralph, and one sister Desa Tepley.

Pugh, O Roy -

O. Roy Pugh, 96, of Phoenix, Az., formerly of Stringtown and Arispe area, died Wed., Sept. 28, 1988 at a nursing home where he

had lived since July 29, 1988. Burial was in the Phoenix Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Pugh was born January 22, 1892 on the Andrew Jackson Pugh farm north of Prescott to Jacob William and Allie (Ingram) Pugh.

Following duty in Missouri and South Carolina during World War I, he opened a garage in Stringtown in Dec. 1918, Adams County, and

operated the garage until December 1944. His brothers, Homer, Lloyd and Lester worked with him at various times. In 1944, Roy along

with his mother and sister, Vera, moved to Arispe, where he operated a garage until 1968. Roy moved to Arizona in June to live

with his brother Lester and wife Leigh until January 1980. He had lived in care facilities since that time.

Roy had made a home for his mother for 48 years.

Survivors include two sisters, Pearl (Mrs. Ben) Hetland of Phoenix, Az. and Edrie (Mrs. Jack) Kaiserlik of Cedar Falls, Ia.; and three brothers, Homer of Lenox; Lloyd of Bandon, Or.; and Lester Pugh of Spring Valley, Az.; and 13 nieces and nephews; Gale Penfold,

Carl, Charlie, and Paul Lawrence, all of Corning; Glen Heltand of Phoenix, Az., Vernon Lawrence of Villisca; Lauretta Gluts of Waterloo,

Lola Lakin of Cedar Falls, Grace Lakin of New Mexico, Carolyn Johnson of Avondale, Az., Marlene King of Lemoore, Ca., John

Kaiserlik of Cedar Falls, and David Pugh of Arispe; four cousins and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, Nellie (Mrs. Harry) Penfold, Faye (Mrs. Howard) Lawrence, Irma (Mrs. Lawrence)

Brown, and Vera Pugh; and three nephews, Roy and Ronald Brown, Body Hetland, and one niece, Glee Penfold.

He was a 72 year member of the Lenox Masonic Lodge, and the Murray American Legion Post.

Ryan, Leo Vincent -

Funeral services for Leo V. Ryan were held Friday, October 28, 1988 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox with Rev. Gerald J. Stessman and Rev. Michael B. Berner officiating. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery, Corning, Ia.

Leo Vincent Ryan was born near Brooks, Ia. September 1, 1910. He died at the age of 78 years, one month, and 25 days. He was the son

of Dennis and Agnes Cotter Ryan. A son Dennis Arthur preceded him in death, also his parents, and three brothers Eugene, Harold and Lewis, and two sisters Ethel and Marjery.

He was married January 22, 1940 to Elda Lawrence of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Corning. He is survived by his wife Elda; a son

Daniel and wife Jean of Red Wing, Mn.; a daughter Theresa and husband Guy Hocking of Cerritos, Ca.; a son Michael of Sheridan, Wy.; a

son Robert and wife Susan and children Mathew, Molly, and Michael of rural Lenox; a son Joseph and children Jennifer, Thomas and Sean of Red Wing, Mn.; a daughter Mary and husband Cleo Toelle of Beemer, Ne.; and a brother Eddie and wife Bernice Ryan of Lenox.

He attended public school and spent all his life in farming. He was a faithful member of St Patrick's Catholic Church, Lenox, serving on

the church council for two years, as a trustee 15 years, and as treasurer for 10 years. He was on the Lenox Saddle Club board for 18 years and treasurer for the last 10 years.

He was known to be a hard working man but found time to serve on the County Extension Council for eight years and helping his children

through 26 consecutive years of 4-H and being leader for 15 years.

He and his wife were selected "Honorary Citizens" in their community.

Leo was strictly a family man, taking great pleasure in his children and grandchildren.

Shawler, Mervin Wesley -

Funeral services for Mervin Wesley Shawler were held Thursday, Nov. 17, 1988 at the First Christian Church in Lenox. Dr. Jack Cutbirth and Mr. Don Jensen officiated. Interment was in North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Ia.

Mervin Wesley Shawler was born February 25, 1937 to Bert and Ruby Leach Shawler. He departed this life November 14, 1988, at his feed business at the age of 51 years, eight months and 20 days.

Mervin attended elementary school at Grant #1 in Adams County, Iowa. He graduated with the class of 1954 at the Lenox High School.

Mervin was married to Karen Mills on June 22, 1968.

He is survived by his wife Karen; son Todd 16; daughter Lisa 9; his parents Bert and Ruby Shawler, all of Lenox; a brother Gailen Shawler of Council Bluffs, Ia.; two sisters, Vina Smith of Lenox; and Karen McCrea of Twin Brooks, S.D.

He has owned the Shawler Feed Store in Lenox since 1959. He was a member of the Lenox Christian Church where he has served as elder and was at this time serving as Chairman of the Church Board.

Mervin set a good example as a father. He shared a love of nature and the outdoors with his son as they spent many hours together; hunting, fishing, and trapping. He often helped his daughter Lisa by reading books, coloring and making puzzles.

The family treasures the poem he wrote in appreciation of his wife and family. They are thankful of the good years with him and will always cherish his memory along with the many other relatives and friends.

Speelman, Ruby May Taylor -

Funeral services for Ruby May Speelman were held Friday, October 28, 1988 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Don

Fisher officiating. Interment was at West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Ia.

Ruby May Speelman, the daughter of Albert and Effie Thompson Taylor, was born in Taylor County near Bedford, Ia. on July 27, 1899.

She passed away October 26, 1988 at the Lenox Care Center at the age of 89 years.

On January 8, 1955 she was married to Adley Speelman in Creston. She resided in Creston until 1976 when she returned to Lenox to make her home.

Ruby is survived by two sisters: Susie Brown and Helen Hamblin and her husband Lloyd all of Lenox; three nephews: Gary Hamblin of

Oakland; Richard Hamblin of Loveland, Co.; William Martin of Hickory, N.C.; a niece Karen Martin Hasman of Evanston, Il.; and several great nieces and nephews. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister Vera Martin and brother Clark Taylor.

Whipp, Isabelle Farquhar -

Isabelle Farquhar Whipp, 93, formerly of the Lenox vicinity, passed away at the Thompkins Health Center in Fort Dodge Friday, Nov. 18.

The daughter of George and Minnie (Johnston) Farquhar, she was born Nov. 17, 1895 near College Springs. She attended high school in College Springs and graduated in 1914 from Amity High School. She then attended Monmouth College in Illinois.

Isabelle and Lloyd Adam Whipp were married on April 19, 1917. They farmed together in Page and Taylor County until their retirement and then moved to Lenox.

She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox, was actively involved in church work, the Order of the Eastern Star and was Mother Adviser of the Rainbow Girls for many years. Her participation in these organizations included involvement in both the local

and state level.

Surviving her are three children, Ruth Pauline Sherwin of Green Valley, Az., Betty Jean Warner, of Fort Dodge and Forrest Whipp of Lenox; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Ruth Dugan of Clarinda.

Preceding her in death was her husband in 1983 and their son, Lloyd Loudon Whipp, who was killed on Iwo Jima during World War II.

Services were held on Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church in Lenox, Don Fisher, presiding.

Wood, William I (Bill) -

William I. "Bill'' Wood, 65, of Waverly, Ks., formerly of Lenox, died September 26, 1988 at the Veterans Hospital in Topeka, Ks.

Graveside memorial services were held September 29, 1988 at the West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. The Rev. Don Fisher

officiated.

A memorial has been established to the Waverly Library, Waverly, Ks. 66871.

Mr. Wood was born April 13, 1923, in Lenox to Lloyd and Lela (Nabb) Wood. He married Shirley May January 1, 1956 in California.

He moved to Waverly, Ks. 14 years ago and was a self-employed electrical engineer building grain handling equipment. He was a

Ham Radio operator and a member of the Grandfathers Club.

Survivors include his wife Shirley of Waverly, Ks.; a son Donald Lloyd Wood of Ames; two daughters, Connie Bolz of New Strawn, Ks.,

and Bonnie Blatchford of Waverly, Ks.; two grandchildren; a sister Linda (Mrs. Don) Pendegraft of Creston, and a brother, Reldon

Wood of Ceres, Ca.
