Abarr, Richard Alvin -

Funeral services for Richard Alvin Abarr were held Oct. 5, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield with Rev. Len

Garrison officiating.

Music was provided by Patty Parrish and Chantelle Jennett.

Casket bearers were Doug Horton, Paula Horton, Bobby Thurman, Leslie Barr Chandler, Lynn Christensen, Jan

Christensen, and Kim Thurman.

Burial was in Clearfield Cemetery. Military Graveside Rites were provided by Woodside Post 97 American Legion. Wilson-

Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Richard Alvin Abarr, son of Ardath and Marietta (Bruner) Abarr, was born Feb. 16, 1931 in Clearfield.  He passed away Oct. 1, 2001

at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 15 days.

He graduated from Clearfield High in 1950 and entered the Air Force. While serving in Japan, Dick was united in marriage to

Sumiko Kikuchi on July 12, 1957. He retired from the Air Force in 1974, then worked at the Air Force Academy until 1993. After

retirement he enjoyed going to the Senior Center to play pool and visit with friends as long as health permitted. Dick and Sumi have

lived in Colorado Springs for the past 30 years. He was a member of the VFW and the United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed coming back and seeing family and all of his nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his wife Sumi; three sisters, Phyllis Wood (husband Paul) of Dallas, Oregon, Joan Freemyer (husband Wes)

of Clearfield, and Carol Lee Fisher (husband Ray) of Clearfield, two brothers, Cecil Abarr (wife Lou) of Savannah, Ga., and Larry

Abarr and special friend Marilyn of Savannah, Mo.; sister-in-law Connie Abarr of Wiesbaden, Germany; and several nieces and

nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother Robert; brother Jerry; brother-in-law Vernon Horton; and nephew

Michael Freemyer.

Brown, Harlan Dale -

Funeral services for Harlan Dale Brown, age 97, were held Monday, September 10, 2001, in Harlan, Iowa. Dale was born

January 2, 1904, in Taylor County, the son of William Thomas and Clarissa Hamblin Brown. He attended school in Taylor

County in Marshall Township.

Dale was united in marriage to Alta Bernice Johnson in 1927 at Harlan. They farmed in this are many years; after retirement

Dale lived on the family farm. Four children were born to this union; Duane Rodell, Merwyn Carleton, Celo Allen and Karol

Bea. Dale moved into the Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan in 1997, residing there until his death September 7, 2001.

Preceding Dale in death were his parents; 2 wives Alta in 1977 and Edna in 1988; 6 brothers William Glenn, Oran Alonza,

Dee Anderson, Eddie Roosevelt, Orville Theodore, Horace Hamblin; 4 sisters, one in infancy, Mattie Elizabeth, Clarissa Opal

Brown Weeda, Jessie Evelene Colter.

Left to cherish his memory are his four children and spouses, grandchildren, great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews

and a host of friends.

Duncan, Lester Gary -

Funeral services for Lester Gary Duncan were held Sept. 18 at Ritchie Funeral Home in Lenox. He was born Sept. 21, 1954,

and passed away Sept. 14, 2001, at the age of 47.

Officiating at the funeral service was Pastor Tim Maxa.

Casket bearers were Harlan Miller, Richard Marshall, Mike Marshall, Dave Brown, Jim Rice and Dave Lenz. Honorary

casket bearers were Paul Brokaw, Jerry South, David Marshall, Robert Marshall and Terry Morgan. Interment was at North

Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Lester Gary Duncan was born on Sept 21, 1954 in Soeul, Korea. When he was age 4, Gary and his parents, George and

Marjorie, moved to the Omaha area. Gary moved to Creston, where he met Debra Marshall.

On Nov. 16, 1974, Gary and Debra were married in Prescott. The family moved to California in 1983 for one year, then

returned to Lenox when Gary began driving a truck for Harlan Miller. In 1994 Gary became owner and operator of his own

truck.

He enjoyed cooking, eating Chinese food, NASCAR racing, collecting model cars, and having weekend get-aways with his

wife Deb.

Gary is survived by his wife Debra of Lenox; his parents, George and Marjorie Duncan of Columbus, Neb.; daughter

Christina Oliva (husband Carlos) of Des Moines; and son Gene and fiancee Mackenzie Bates of Oskaloosa.

Eighmy, Lucille Elnora Pace -

Funeral services for Lucille Eighmy, age 87, of Conway who died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, were held Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001

at 2 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford with Pastor Tim Maxa officiating. Interment was held in the Memory Cemetery in

New Market. Memorials can be given in Lucille's name.

Lucille Elnora Eighmy was born July 13, 1914 in Mason Township, Taylor County, Iowa, near New Market to Guy Pace

and Teresa Fanning Pace. When Lucille was very young she moved to Kansas where she joined the Methodist Episcopal

Church when she was 6 years old. She attended rural schools in the Waverly, Kansas area, returning to Taylor County where she

entered New Market High School in 1931. She completed four years of high school in three years, graduating in 1935. She

attended two years of Teacher's College in Ottawa, Kansas.

On Oct. 16, 1936, she was married to Wendall Eighmy in Troy, Kansas. The couple lived in the Clarinda/New Market area

until 1940 when they moved to Conway where Wendall opened a service station and garage. Lucille served as a substitute teacher

for many years and had substituted in Conway from primary grades through high school. She attended the United Methodist Church in

Conway and after its closing she attended in Sharpsburg. She had also been a member of the Conway P.T.A.

Lucille is survived by two sons: John Eighmy and wife Donna of Conway and Don Eighmy and wife Carolyn of Sidney; a sister,

Lillian Jones and husband Edwin of Kansas City, Mo.; nine grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren and one great-great

grandchild.

Preceding Lucille in death were her parents, Guy and Teresa; her husband Wendall in 1990 and a great-grandson, Scott Michael

Brauckman.

Eller, Eunice Key -

Funeral services for Eunice Eller, age 96, of Lenox were held Monday, Oct. 15, 2 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Lenox

with Pastor Dena Vittorio officiating. Interment was in the West Fairview Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to the

Lenox Christian Church. Arrangements were by the Ritchie Funeral Home.

Eunice Mae Key Eller was born May 18, 1905, in the rural Sharpsburg area. She passed away on Friday, Oct. 12,

2001.

She was one of 20 children born to Achilles Shadrack Key, a Confederate soldier, and Sarah Ellen Coe Key. Eunice

was a direct descendent of Francis Scott Key. She grew up in the Sharpsburg area and attended school there. On March 19,

1924, she was united in marriage to James Airy Eller at the United Methodist Church in Bedford.

Eunice was a member of the Lenox Christian Church for 70-plus years. She was a member of the Lenox American

Legion Auxiliary and was known as one of the "golden girls" who enjoyed bingo on a regular basis. She enjoyed quilting,

gardening and canning. She often worked alongside her husband in the field and husking corn.

For a time Eunice worked for an egg-breaking plant in Omaha during World War II. She also worked for Spoonemore

Produce & Hatchery, and was an Avon Lady for over 70 years.

She loved country music and dancing. Eunice was a devoted caregiver to her husband and several other family

members.

She is survived by sons Harold (Curly) Francis (wife Virginia) of Mound City, Mo., and James (Jiggs) Melvin (wife

Patty) of Ft Worth, Texas; daughters Lula Mae Spoonemore and Helen Virginia Smith, both of Lenox; sisters Hattie

Tackett Fuller of Clarinda and Mary Terry of Lenox; nine grandchildren 14 great-grandchildren and seven great-great

grandchildren.

Preceding Eunice in death were her parents Achilles and Sarah; husband James in 1962; nine brothers, Samuel, Lewis,

John, Charles, Oscar, William, Lloyd, Royal and Hollis; eight sisters, Ellen, Cora, Rose, Roxie, Lydia, Bessie, Dora and

Lula; and two sons-in-law, Lloyd Smith and Harry Spoonemore.

Harvey, Forrest (Pete) -

Funeral services for Forrest (Pete) Harvey of Lenox were held Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the Clearfield United Methodist

Church with Rev. Len Garrison and Rev. Tim Maxa officiating.

Music was provided by Jean Huffman and Chantelle Jennett. Casket bearers were Christopher Harvey, Galen Modlin, Rick

Callison, Michael Harvey, Stanley Knox and Ivan Stephens. Interment was in the Clearfield Cemetery. Wilson-Watson &

Armstrong Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Forrest (Pete) Harvey was born Sept. 30, 1908, in the home place west of Clearfield. He was the son of Granville and

Dora Knox Harvey. He attended country school at Grant #3 and "Cornbread College." He graduated from Clearfield High

School in 1928. He married Jean Worthington on June 11, 1938, in Clearfield. She passed away on Sept. 29, 1998.

Pete was a life-long farmer at the home place until his retirement in 1987 when he and Jean moved to Lenox. He was

a member of the Clearfield United Methodist Church where he served on many committees and board. He was active as long as

his health permitted. In his earlier years he worked for the Taylor County Assessor and the ASCS office. He loved fishing

and raised gardens throughout his life.

He passed away at his home in Lenox on Oct. 7, 2001.

Survivors include two children, Sanford Lee Harvey (wife Madeleine) of Orange, Virginia, and Kathleen M. Winfree of

Lenox; grandchildren Darin A. Winfree (wife Lisa) of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, and Michael J. Harvey of Blackburg, Virginia;

great-granddaughters Miranda J. Mercer and Bittie Willit of Sergeant Bluff; one sister, Hazel Knox Lundberg of Denver,

Colo.; sister-in-law Gail Rothmeyer of Dallas, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Jean; brothers Bill and Paul; sisters Edith and Opal; and son-in-law

Wyman (Joe) Winfree.

Jackson, Edith Elizabeth Butman -

Edith Elizabeth Jackson, 100, of Villisca, was born May 9, 1901, in Adams County, Iowa, the daughter of William

Fletcher and Elvia (Eastman) Butman and died Tuesday, October 9, 2001 at the Red Oak Nursing and Rehab Center, in

Red Oak, Iowa.

Edith was united in marriage to John Jackson, son of George Washington Jackson and Agnes Docker Jackson of

Montgomery County, Iowa, on February 26, 1921, in Red Oak, Iowa. To this union were born three children: Byron Earl,

Ralph Arthur, and Gladys Irene. Her husband, John, preceded her in death in 1964, and their son Byron, died of an accidental

drowning August 10, 1945 at Dulag Beach on Leyte Island in the Philippines.

Edith and John farmed northeast of Villisca during their entire married lives. After John's death in 1964 she moved to

Villisca. Edith did housekeeping in the Villisca area for many years. She had been a resident in the Good Samaritan Care

Center since December 1998. She entered the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital August 7th and then entered the Red

Oak Nursing and Rehab Center in Red Oak.

Edith enjoyed gardening, canning, raising chickens, crocheting, embroidering, and other crafts. She was also involved in

the neighborhood Social Hour Club.

She is survived by her son Ralph Jackson of Red Oak, and daughter Gladys Knox and husband Lyle of Clearfield; Seven

grandchildren, Rodney Jackson and wife Cindi of Denver, CO, Victor Jackson and wife Trish of Persia, Iowa, Teresa Jervi of

Sacramento, CA, Debra McDonald and husband Dr. Richard of Aledo, TX, Veta Myers and husband Lowell of Springfield,

MO, Connie Beck and husband Donald of Lenox, and Stanley Knox and wife Dorothy of Clearfield; 19 great grandchildren

and seven great-great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Edith is proceeded in death by her parents, husband, son Byron Jackson, daughter-in-law Marilyn, sisters Mabel, Ethel,

Bertha, Esther and brothers Justain and Arthur.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 13, 2001 at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca, with Rev. Tim Maxa

officiating. Burial was in the Villisca Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

John, Patricia Ann Hayes Dukes -

Mass of Christian Burial for Patricia Ann John was held Oct. 1, 2001, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox with Father

Dan Siepker officiating.

Lecture was Toni Rechsteiner. Music was provided by Brenda Rainforth and Florence Robinson. Pallbearers were David Hale,

Bob Ryan, Allen Dukes, Delbert Weeda, Mick Bennett, and Jack Fehring. Interment was in North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox.

Ritchie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Patricia Ann John was born Oct. 12, 1944, in Lawrence, Kansas, to Ralph Hayes and Anna Gourde Hayes. She grew up in

the Creston area and moved to Lenox, where she attended high school.

In 1962 she was united in marriage to Charles Dukes. They had three children: Kelly, David and Brad.  Patricia and Charles

divorced in 1976 and she married Steve John on Oct. 3, 1977 in Des Moines.

Patricia was employed at the G & K Lounge and was later a partner at Big John's in Lenox until 1992.

She was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox and the Audubon Society of Iowa.

She is survived by her husband Steve of Lenox; daughter Kelly McFee (husband Craig) of Kent; two sons, David Dukes (wife

Juliana) of Albuquerque, N.M., and Brad Dukes of Kent; step-son Eric John of Shawnee Mission, Kansas; two sisters, Rosemary

Bennett (husband Tom) of Broomfield, Colo., and Emma Clem (husband Bill) of Creston; six grandchildren, five nephews and

one niece.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Ralph and Anna; a step-mother, Avis Hayes; a sister, Susan; and a grandson, Dakota,

at infancy.

Phillips, Karen L Davidson -

Funeral services for Karen L. Phillips of Corning, age 61, were held Oct. 16 at Coen-Beaty-Pearson Family Funeral Service

in Corning with Pastor Andrew Rubenking officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Coming. Memorials may be given in

her name.

Karen was born on Jan. 30, 1940, in Monroe, Iowa. She passed away on Oct. 13, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha.

She was the daughter of Jack and Caroline (Meyer) Davidson. Karen lived in Effingham, Ill., until 1973. She was

married to Joseph L. Phillips on August 18, 1979, in Corning.

Karen was a homemaker and also worked at Lazy Ike and Easy Heat Wire Craft for a short time. She was a member of the

American Legion Auxiliary in Corning.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph; daughter Janet Pedersen of Corning; step-daughters Gail (husband Richard)

Wilker of Creston; Kathy Jo Bissell of Corning; LeeAnn Johnston of Corning; and Lynn (husband David) Lundquist of Lenox;

brothers Tom (wife Nancy Davidson of Des Moines; Edward (wife Bonnie) Davidson of Corning; and Donald (wife Charla)

Davidson of Des Moines; sisters Delores (husband Dennis) Stuve of Des Moines, Mary (husband David) Beltran of Paramount,

Calif, Cheryl Wheeler of Des Moines, Kate (husband Scott) Slater of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, and Barbara (husband John) Wetzel

of Pleasant Hill; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son Kirby Lee Burton in 1981; and a granddaughter, Danielle Turlock.

Ruppert, Charles -

Charles Rupert age 95 of Arvada, Colo., passed away August 26, 2001.

He was married to the former June Boyer. They had three children; Richard, Margaret Ann and David.

He was superintendent of the Lenox schools in the early 1940's. He grew up around Clearfield and was the son of Clyde and Eva Ruppert.

Shehan, Barbara Lillie -

Funeral services for Barbara Shehan, age 53, of Lenox were held Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, 11 a.m. at the Christian Church in

Lenox with Pastors Dena Vittorio and Tim Maxa officiating.

Barbara Shehan was born July 29, 1948, in Creston, the daughter of Earle Duane Lillie and Bessie Alice Lewis Lillie. She

passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001.

She grew up near Lenox on a farm west of town. She attended Lenox Community School and graduated in 1966.

After graduation Barbara and her best friend Patty Brammer, moved to Des Moines, where she worked for Look Magazine as

a punch card operator.

On May 20, 1967, she was united in marriage to John Shehan at the Lenox Christian Church. The couple moved to the

Phillippines where John was stationed. In 1969 they moved to Glenwood for a short time, then returned to Lenox from 1969 to

1974. They lived in Albany, Mo., from 1974 to 1981 when they moved to Austin, Texas. The family returned to Lenox in 1986

and operated the Lenox Cafe until 1993.

Barbara had managed the golf course in Afton for several years and worked at Papetti's of Iowa until her health forced her to

retire.

She was a member of the Lenox Christian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and Genealogy Society of Prescott.

She loved candy and was well known for her delicious pies.

She is survived by her husband John of Lenox; four children Stephanie Marckmann (husband Jim) of Lenox and their children

Zach, Michael, Garret and A.J.; Derrick Shehan of Shenandoah and his daughter Essie; Quentin Shehan of Kansas City, Kansas;

and Benito Gonzales (wife Grizelda) of Colorado and their daughter Barbara; a brother Michael Lillie (wife Pam) of Prescott;

a sister Virginia Swank and Charlie Serber of Chillicothe, Mo.; and her best friend Eldena Freshour of Lenox.

Preceding Barbara in death were her parents Earle and Bessie; a son, Scott, at birth; and a sister, Susan Lillie.

Sobotka, David Milton -

Funeral services for David Milton Sobotka were held Oct. 19, 2001, at the United Church of Diagonal with Rev. Karen

Garrison officiating.

Music was provided by Judy Newton and Sherry Wiley.

Casket bearers were Mike Schaefer, Jack Stephens, Terry Moffitt, Kenny Schaefer, Chuck Klejch and Monte Starlin. Honorary

pallbearers were Coral Sobotka, Lowell Schaefer, David Wiley, Bob Schaefer, Claire Newton and Alan Bentley. Military rites

were provided by Morris-Herrold Post 395 American Legion.

Interment was in Diagonal cemetery.

David was born Dec. 17, 1934 at the family home south of Diagonal to Edward and Frances Caberet Sobotka. He passed

away on Oct. 17, 2001, at the age of 66, at the Kavanagh House in West Des Moines.

David graduated from Diagonal High School in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. On Jan. 29, 1956, he

married Lois Anne Allen at the Diagonal Methodist :Church. The couple had five children; Dan Edward, Brian David, Brent Ivan,

Rhonda Lois and Darwin Gene.

David was a farmer and lived his entire life on the farm He enjoyed antique tractors, camping, woodworking, playing cards

and farming. He was a member of the United Church of Diagonal, Diagonal Lions Club, American Legion, Morris Herrold Post 395,

and a neighborhood card club.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Dan Edward; a brother, Leonard Andrew Sobotka; a sister, Norma

Jean Lumbard; sister-in-law Kay Allen and Mildred Sobotka.

David is survived by his wife Lois Anne of Diagonal; his children, Brian (wife Pam) of Creston, Brent of Diagonal, Rhonda

Lohmann (husband Mike) of Des Moines; and Darwin (wife Michele) of Clearfield; eight grandchildren, Stacy and Travis

Sobotka, Anthony, Cassidy, Madison and Josh Lohmann, Katelyn and Jacob Sobotka; brothers Donald Edward (wife Jorene) of

Beaconsfield, and Ivan Sobotka (wife Sharon) of Diagonal; his father and mother-in-law, Cecil and Lois Allen of Mt. Ayr;

brothers-in-law Roy Lumbard (wife Nancy) of Creston and Willis Allen and friend Sue of Tingley; sisters-in-law Venita Schmidt of

Hot Springs, Ark., and Kay Drake (husband Lloyd) of Mt. Ayr; many other relatives and friends.

Sullivan, Carene Brown -

Memorial Services for Carene Brown Sullivan, age 61, of San Diego, Calif., will be held at Stringtown Church on Friday,

Nov. 2, at 2 p.m. [16 Feb 1940 - 22 Oct 2001]

Carene formerly resided in Lenox and was a graduate of Lenox High School. She passed away on Oct. 22, 2001, after a

battle with cancer. She was the daughter of Marie and Darrell Brown.

Sullivan, Carene Brown -

Carene Brown Sullivan of San Diego, CA and formerly of Lenox, lost her battle with cancer and passed away on October

22, 2001.

Carene was born in Lenox, IA to Darrel S. and Marie (Burkhalter) Brown on February 16, 1940.

She moved with her parents to Missouri and then to Vancouver, WA. In 1945, Carene moved to Cozad, NE and in

1950 to Memphis, TX. She attended grade school in both  Nebraska and Texas. In 1952, she and her parents settled on a

farm north of Lenox where she attended school in Grant Township and then Lenox High School graduating in 1958 as

valedictorian of her class. Carene attended and graduated from Creston Community College with an A.A. in Liberal Arts.

Carene moved to Webster City, IA where she worked in the Kimball Young Library. Wishing to pursue her education in

library sciences, Carene moved to Tuscon, AZ in 1962 and graduated in 1965 from the University of Arizona with a B.A.

in History. Carene also worked part time in the university library while she was there.

In 1966, Carene was married to Jack Sullivan and they moved to San Diego, CA. Their children Cristine and Don were

born and later Carene and Jack divorced.

Caren was a stay-at-home Mom and also did babysitting until her children were in school. She went to work as a

technical typist in 1979 for a realty company. Upon her retirement she was a senior systems analyst for a company

working under the U.S. Department of Navy.

After retiring and as her health would allow, Carene did volunteer work at her church and at "Rachel's" a center for

abused women and children.

Carene loved life and with her smile and laugh and up-beat attitude she made many friends wherever she went. She loved

nature, flowers, books , and people and especially loved her family, her children, her parents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Her parents proceeded her in death. She is survived by her daughter Cristina Sullivan and Marian Otto, her son Dale

Sullivan and wife Beth all of San Diego, CA; a brother, Roger Brown and wife Coni of Tampa, FL; nephew Ryan Brown and

son Cody of Torrington, WY; nephew Quentin Brown and niece Jessikay Brown of Oskaloosa, IA; 1 uncle, 9 aunts and many

cousins who all loved her dearly.

She was a member of the Summit Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Church in LaMesa, CA.

Memorial services were held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego on October 29 and at the Stringtown

Church on Nov. 2. Carene was interned in the Stringtown beside her parents.

Taxted, Ruth Ann Saucke -

Funeral services for Ruth Ann Saucke Taxted were held Oct 12, 2001 at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church in

Urbandale. Ruth was born Sept. 24, 1926, in Jolley, Iowa and passed away Oct. 5, 2001, in Johnston, Iowa, at the age of 75. She

had been ill with lymphoma. Interment was in Reading Township Cemetery, Farnhamville, Iowa.

Survivors include two sisters, Bonnie (husband Win) Tyler of Lenox, and Arlene Krohn of Jackson, Minn.; two brothers,

Irvin and Richard Baskerville, both of Jolley, Iowa; and children Pamela Scott of San Diego, Terry Saucke of Portland, N.D.,

Nicolette Lane of Indianola, and Debra Knapp of Urbandale.

She graduated from Lytton (Iowa) High School in 1944. She married Omar Saucke in Fonda, Iowa, on June 10, 1945, and they

lived on a farm where the children grew up. They had three girls, Pamela, Nicolette and Debra, and a son, Terry.

The family moved from the farm to Lohrville and the couple divorced. On May 1, 1978, she married Ole Taxted and lived in

Duncombe, Iowa, for many years. After Ole's death, Ruth Ann moved to Urbandale to be near daughters.

Thomson, Vale Ulan -

Vale Ulan Thomson, 86, Clearfield Iowa, died September 2, 2001, at Clearview Home in Clearfield. He had a stroke August

13, 2001, and had been transferred to Clearview Home on August 22, 2001 from Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des

Moines, Iowa.

He was born February 1, 1915, the first child of Herbert C. and Harriet Pearl Conklin Thomson, at their farm south of

Griswold, Iowa.

Vale attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1932.  He received a

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1938 from Iowa State College and subsequently purchased the veterinary

practice of Dr. Hines in Gravity, Iowa.

On July 28, 1938, he and Annabelle Mabel Herbert married at the home of her parents near Atlantic, Iowa.

On August 12, 1942, he entered the Army Veterinary Corp as a First Lieutenant and was discharged in 1946 at the rank of

Major.

He moved his family to Clearfield in 1946 and practiced veterinary medicine until his retirement in 1985.

On August 1, 1980, he married Mona Mae Beemer.

In retirement he enjoyed wood crafting, fishing, traveling, administration of family farms and visiting with many friends.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Clearfield Lions, Iowa Veterinary Medical Association,

American Veterinary Medical Association, American Legion Post #97, and the Iowa State Alumni Association.

He is survived by a daughter, Jo Ann Avey of Chandler, AZ, son John U. Thomson, DVM and wife Kay of Starkville,

MS; grandchildren Daniel U. Thomson, DVM and wife Cindy of Greeley, CO; Holly B. Avey and husband Steve Rapp of

Decatur, GA; David J. Thomson of Council Bluffs, IA: Josh T Avey and Francee Coleen Brown of Green Valley, AZ: three

great granddaughters, Kelly May, Katelyn Annabelle and Tory Grace Thomson of Greeley, CO: a sister Rita McHaffey and

husband Raymond of Atlantic, IA and friend Vera Morey.

He is preceded in death by his parents and both wives. Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the United

Methodist Church in Clearfield with Rev. Lynn Garrison officiating. Music was provided by Maralene Longfellow and

Chantelle Jennett. Casket bearers were Daniel Thomson, Holly Avey, Davis Thomson, Cindy Thomson, Steve Rapp, and Josh

Avey. Military rites were provided by American Legion Post 97 of Clearfield. Interment was in Clearfield Cemetery Wilson-

Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
