George
D. Cook, son of Chancey and Mary Trost Cook, was born at Lenox, Iowa on November 16, 1917 and departed this life at
the Greater Community Hospital
Creston.
Iowa on April 24th, 1978 at the age of 60 years, 5 months and 8 days.
On
February 14. 1948 he was united in marriage to Roberta Maye Matthews of Clearfield and to this union were born three daughters, Virginia
Lee De France of
Des
Moines. Iowa. Suanne John, of Lenox, Iowa, and Ilene Cook of Des Moines. Iowa.
He
was baptized and became a member of the Lenox Presbyterian Church. George spent
many hours in the field, as fanning was his main interest. He visited
often
with his many friends about farm operations. He spent four years with the
United States Army serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.
His
mother, father, and sister Helen preceded him in death.
He
leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Roberta Maye,
his three daughters, a son-in-law, David De France, one grandson, Eric John, a
sister Betty O'Riley, Maye
Matthews
of Clearfield. Also, a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many
friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday at the Methodist Church in Clearfield with Rev.
Karl Watkins officiating.
Music
was provided by Mrs. Joan Owens, organist.
Casketbearers were Bill Livingston. Dick Bailey, Gary Heimke,
Francis Routh, Dale Sturm and Bill Wyman. Burial was
in the Clearfield Cemetery with
Military
Rites conducted by Woodside Legion Post.

Damewood, Blanche Mae Humphrey
-
Funeral services
for Mrs. Clyde Milton (Blanche) Damewood, 85, of
Bedford, held June 17 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted
by Rev. Carter Smith.
Mrs. Damewood died June 15, 1978 in the Greater Community
Hospital at Creston. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Iowa.
Blanche Mae
Humphrey, daughter of Edward M. and Mary Elizabeth Humphrey, was born near
Gravity, Iowa on October 28, 1892.
She grew to
maturity in the family home near Gravity in Taylor County lowa.
She attended a country school and the Gravity Methodist Church during
childhood.
On March 9,
1911, she was united in marriage to Clyde Milton Damewood,
also of the Gravity community. They lived on a farm in that community until the
time of her husband's
death October
16, 1958. During those years they had born to them four daughters: Coryl, Blythe (now deceased), Margaret and Doris.
After the death
of her husband, Clyde, she worked at the Northwest Missouri University in the
capacity of House Mother to the Boys' Dormitories for several years, until her
retirement. During those years she was respected by hundreds of young men,
who's loyalty and friendship she enjoyed all the years of her retirement.
Besides her husband
Clyde, she was preceded in death by seven brothers, two sisters, one daughter
(Blythe), and her husband Kenneth Lucas, a granddaughter, Mary Margaret
Jones Hurd, a grandson. Vane Basil Lucas, Jr., great
grandchildren, Mitchell Shawn Lucas and Mary Kay Hurd.
Those of her
family who survive are Mr. and Mrs. Raymond (Bing) Miller, of Lenox, la., Mr and Mrs. Vane B. Lucas of Bedford, Mr. and Mrs. Mark
Anderson of Lincoln, Nebraska,
five
grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.
She was a member
of the Bedford Baptist Church, also Rebecca Lodge #134. She was active in many
church and community affairs.
Her family and
many friends will miss her friendly, helpful and pleasant association. She loved
her neighbors and was always ready to be of help in times of need.
She often
expressed her love, appreciation, and concern for members of her family.

while he was digging the basement.

Mildred Velda Frame died Thursday at her home south of
Clearfield, Iowa. Services were held Sunday, May 21 at the United Methodist
Church in
Clearfield,
Iowa. Burial was at the Fairview Cemetery at Lenox, Iowa.
Mildred
Snare married Glen Frame September 5, 1923. They have lived on a farm all of
their married life in the Lenox-Clearfield communities. To this union
were
born four sons, Kenneth, Eugene, Norman, and Howard and four daughters, Glenna,
Martha, Alice and Golda.
Preceding
her in death were four brothers and three sisters, one daughter and one
granddaughter. Mrs. Frame is survived by her husband, Glen, four sons,
Kenneth
Frame of Lincoln, Nebraska, Eugene Frame of Greeley, Colorado, Norman Frame of
Denver, Colorado and Howard Frame of Longmont, Colorado, three
daughters,
Mrs. Raymond (Glenna) Eggert of Clearfield, Mrs. Bill
(Alice) Witmer of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and
Golda Ingram of Prairie City; a sister, Golda
Snare
of Lincoln, Nebraska; 20 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Goodale, Mary Loretta (Retta) -
Mary Loretta Goodale (Retta, as she was known
by everyone), 92, of Lenox, passed away June 24, 1978 at the Clearview Home in Clearfield, where she had been a patient
for the past five years. The funeral was June 27 at the Larkin-Bender Funeral
Home with Rev. W.C. Trembly conducting the service.
Burial was in
East Fairview Cemetery. Casket bearers were James Calvin, Ted Bruington, Rollie Bender, Dick
Young, Robert Goodale, Randall Rusk.
She was the
daughter of George L. and Effie Polston Goodale, born December 18, 1885.
She attended the
Lenox Public School, graduating in 1903. She was a business woman in all the
active years of her life. She worked as deputy County
Recorder for two
years in Bedford, resigning to work in the First National Bank in Lenox for
several years.
In later years
she had an insurance business and realty company until her health failed.
She was a member
of the United Methodist Church for many years and was one of those honored as a
fifty year member in 1972.
Survivors
include three sisters, Mrs. Einar Steffarud (Nelle), and Lucille Munger,
both of Des Moines; Mrs. Edwin Dodds (Fern),
Minneapolis, and
a number of
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded
in death by her parents, a brother and one sister.

Kemery, Daniel Laverne -
Daniel Kemery, 35, died suddenly Thursday, May 25 in a
doctor's office in Lenox of a massive coronary attack. He had worked that day.
When he
complained
of not feeling well, his wife took him to the doctor. He had no previous history
of heart problems.
Services
were Sunday May 28, at the United Methodist Church, the Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating with interment in North Fairview
Cemetery.
Daniel
Laverne Kemery, son of Roy Daniel and Katherine Dorthea Kemery, was born at Athleston, Iowa, Dec. 9, 1942 and has been a long time
resident of
Lenox.
He was employed by the Municipal Light and Power Co. of Lenox the past eleven
years.
On
June 27, 1965, he was married to Linda K. Hughes, daughter of Harris and Erma
Hughes of Rolfe, Iowa.
He
leaves his wife, Linda, two sons, Mark and Matthew, at home at 108 W. Nebraska
St., his father, all of Lenox; three sisters and their families; Connie and
Gene
Mains, Scott and Coleen of Sharpsburg, Rosemary Kemery of Kansas City, Shirley and Homer Dodson, their daughter,
Mary
and her husband, Dennis Bruns, John, Margaret and
Donna, his grandmother, Mary Yarger, two aunts, one
uncle. He was preceded in death by
his
mother, Katherine, and sister, Norma.

Harley
Cleveland Killion, son of Thomas J. and Julia Ann
Dunbar Killion was born near Augusta, Kansas, August
17, 1888. He passed away in Rosary
Hospital,
Corning, Iowa, April 18, 1978 at the age of 89 years, 8 months, and 1 day.
He
spent his early years in Kansas and Illinois; then with his family he moved to
a farm east of Lenox. He came to Lenox in 1901, as a boy, with his parents
and
sister, Metta.
In
1916 he married Pearl Draney. They were divorced in 1936. There were no
children. He had been in business on Main Street in Lenox many years.
First,
with his father in the Killion and Son Clothing Store
then later as a partner in the Killion and Porter
Men's Clothing Store. He worked for
awhile
in the H. Roy Long Real Estate and Insurance business and for several years he
served as Acting Postmaster in Lenox. He made his home at the Hotel
Lenox
for 35 years.
Mr. Killion was a member of the Lenox Christian Church 77
years. He was a Past Worshipful Master of Tremont Lodge, No. 343, AF & AM
and a member of
the
Lodge 67 years.
Survivors
are his sister, Metta M. Porter, of the Lenox Care
Center, a nephew, Harley A. Porter and his wife Agnes, of Lenox, and a niece,
Julia
Peterson,
four grand nephews, Mark Peterson, Jeffry Peterson and Kurt Peterson all of
Avoca, Iowa, and Joe A. Porter of Aspen, Colorado.
Funeral
services were held at the Lenox Christian Church on April 21, 1978, at 1:30
p.m. Pastor Jack Cutbirth officiated.
Organ
music was furnished by Mrs. Ruth Boltinghouse who
also accompanied Mrs. Julia Peterson, soloist.
Bearers,
all family members were George Dunbar and Dean Plants of Lenox, Mark, Jeffry,
and Kurt Peterson, all of Avoca, and Joe A. Porter of
Aspen,
Colorado.
Interment
was in the West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, with graveside Masonic services by
Tremont Lodge No. 343 AF & AM, Mr. Harold Welch conducting.

Maude
E. Peltier was born Oct. 18, 1884 on a farm in
Ringgold County, Iowa, the daughter of John G. and Virginia Sargent.
She
attended rural school and in Mt. Ayr, then moved to Clearfield
where she graduated from the high school in 1903.
She
was married June 10, 1903 from her parents' home in Clearfield to Claude F. Peltier, son of Charles and Ellen Peltier.
They
made their home on the Peltier farm north of
Clearfield.
They
were parents of a son Kenneth, and three daughters, Catherine, Virginia and
Barbara.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, her son, and a daughter, Virginia; a
grandson, Richard Lundsberg; and a
granddaughter,
Michelle Palmer.
She

Jeanette Jones
Phillips, daughter of Eldon and Eva Reed Jones, was born July 29, 1920 at
Lenox, and died June 21, 1978 at Bishop Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebr. The
funeral
was Sat., June
24, 1978 at the Corning United Methodist Church, the Rev. James W. King
officiating, with music by Donna Peckham, organist
and Kathy Schaffer, vocalist.
Interment was in
North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox.
She grew up in
Lenox where she received her education, graduating from high school with the
class of 1948.
On October 2,
1949, she was united in marriage to Joseph L. Phillips at the Lenox Methodist
Church. They are parents of four daughters. Except
for brief
periods when Joe was attending a variety of military schools, the family made
their home in Corning.
A former high
school basketball player, Jeanette carried her competitive enthusiasm into
golf, bowling and bridge playing as an adult. She also loved to dance which she
did as often as circumstances permitted. Warm and friendly by nature, Jeanette
made friends easily, with some deep and lasting relationships that she regular
cultivated.
Even so, her
family was the primary interest in her life and her constant concern for their
welfare was readily seen in both her speech and actions. She found particular
joy in her
grandson, Jason Bissell.
She was a member
of the Corning United Methodist Church, Happy Hollow Country Club, and two
bridge clubs. She also worked as a volunteer for benevolent causes such as the
Heart Fund, Cystic Fibrosis and Cancer campaigns in past years.
Jeanette was
preceded in death by both her father and father-in-law. Surviving to mourn her
passing are her husband, Joe, daughters, Gail, Lee Ann and Lynn, all of
Corning;
Kathy and her
husband, Richard Bissell; her grandson, Jason Bissell; her mother, Mrs. Eva
Jones of Lenox; her grandmother, Mrs. Olive Hughes of Lenox; mother-in-law,
Mrs. R.E.
Phillips of
Corning; brother, John and his wife Geraldine of Lenox, uncles, aunts and other
relatives, with many friends.

Rood, Henrietta (Etta) Votava -
Henrietta
(Etta) Rood was born on Dec. 23. 1929 in Omaha, Nebr. to Louis and
Louise Mains Votava and passed away April 25. 1978 at
the Jefferson County
Hospital
in Fairfield where she had been taken that morning.
At
an early age she moved with her family to a farm north of Clearfield. She graduated
from the Clearfield High School in 1947.
On
June 21. 1952 she was united in marriage to Jim Rood. To this union was born one daughter Sheila.
They have made their home in Richland, Ia. for the past nine
years
where Mr. Rood is Supt. of Schools at Pekin of
Packwood.
Etta
was a teacher at the Pleasant Plain Elementary School in the Fairfield School
District.
She
was a member of Mother Cabrini Catholic Church and belonged to the
Saturday Bridge club of Richland. She was a member of the Honorary Scholarship
Society
of Parsons College, Fairfield where she had college work and of the Phi Cappa Phi Honorary Society.
She
is survived by her husband, Jim and daughter Sheila, a senior at N.E.M.S.C. at
Kirksville, Mo. Also two brothers, Jim Votava of
Clearfield, Louis Votava of Diagonal,
and
three sisters, Mrs. Jerry (Blanche) Fillipi of
Thurston, Nebr. Mrs. Paul (Mary Lou) England of Clearfield, and Mrs. Alice Sediak of Omaha, Nebr. nieces, nephews
and
a host of friends.
She
was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.
Etta
was a devoted wife and mother and a true friend to all who knew her. Her work
as a teacher was a joy to her and each pupil was special to her. She
taught
as long as her health permitted and was teaching half days until two weeks
prior to her death. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved
her.
Scriptural
wake service was held at the Varner Funeral Home in Clearfield on Thur. at 7:30
p.m.
Funeral
services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 28, at St. Patrick's Catholic
Church in Lenox with Rev. Fr. Tim Fitzgerald officiating.
Casketbearers were Dick Conklin, Dick Caughlan, Bradley Young, and
Jerry Horton of Richland. la.. Sam Merrill of Kellerton,
la. and J. Ira Ryan of
Eddyville,
la. Interment was at the Clearfield Cemetery.
A
Memorial Service Mass was held on Monday. May 1, at 9:00 a.m. at the Mother
Cabrini Catholic Church in Richland with Rev. Fr. Glenn Fuegen officiating.
A memorial
fund has been established for cancer research.

Summerhays, Betty Arlene Davison

Funeral services for Mrs. John (Betty) Summerhays,
47, of Bedford, were held in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home here with Rev. Larry Sacor officiating.
Mrs. Summerhays died in her Bedford home May
26, 1978. Interment was at Lexington Cemetery northeast of Bedford.
Betty Arlene Summerhays, daughter of Harvey and
Sarah Davison, was born in rural Taylor County, Iowa, on January 2, 1931. She
attended public
school at the Hess country school in Clayton Township until about 10
years of age when her family moved to near Prescott, Iowa, where she completed
her public schooling.
On March 9, 1953, she was united in marriage to John (Jack) Summerhays at Preston, Minnesota. They made their first
home in Waterloo, Iowa, then lived
in several Iowa communities before moving to Lenox, Iowa, in 1968, and
then to Bedford in 1973. In Bedford Jack and Betty opened the J & B Carpet
store
where she worked as an interior decorator.
Betty became ill nearly a year ago and had been hospitalized on various
occasions in the past year. Most of her time, however, had been spent at home
with her family surrounding her. Betty died Friday forenoon, May 26, in
her home at the age of 47 years, 4 months and 24 days. Her husband and children
were all at her bedside the last few hours of her life on this earth.
She was preceded in death by a son, Roger Jon, and a grandchild, Zeke
Thomas Thrasher.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband. Jack; parents, Harvey and
Sarah Davison of Prescott, Iowa; children, Diana Lee Paul, Carolyn Marie

for Clyde E. Thomas, 79, of Lenox, were held June 10 at the Lenox United
Presbyterian Church with Rev. David Wessels and Rev.

Mr. Thomas died
at the Rosary Hospital in Corning June 7. Interment was at West Fairview
Cemetery. Lenox American Legion Post conducted military graveside rites.
Clyde E. Thomas
was born April 4, 1899 in Nemaha County, Nebraska. He was the son of Charles W.
and Alice Thompson Thomas. He was married to Eda M. Sanburg at Omaha,
Nebraska, on
August 28, 1924.
Mr. Thomas
graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, Nebraska with Bachelor of
Science and Master of Education degrees. Mr. Thomas had lived in Lenox since
1948, and was a
former superintendent of the Lenox Community Schools and served as mayor of
Lenox for 16 years, during the period when the community enjoyed its greatest
industrial
growth. He also had built and operated the Lenox Care Center, which he sold
several years ago.
Mr. Thomas was
also a veteran of military service in World War I and had been a member of the
American Legion for 50 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge
for 49 years.
He is survived
by his wife, Eda; son, T.C. "Tommy" Thomas
of Eagle Grove; and by two grandchildren: Tom Charles and Terri Sue Thomas also
of Eagle Grove, Iowa; other
relatives and
friends.

Mrs.
Beulah Mae Vorhies passed away on Wednesday at the Clearview nursing home in Mount Ayr.
She was a former resident of Shannon City.

in the Oakland Cemetery there. Her son and wife, Mr. and Mrs.
