Anderson, Elmer E -

Word has been received in Lenox of the death of Mr Elmer E. Anderson of Geneseo, Ill., on June 13.

Mrs Anderson will be remembered as the former Elizabeth Bennison, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs J. H. Bennison. The Bennison family lived in Lenox

for several years leaving about 1910 to make their home in Kewanee, Ill.

Mr Anderson is survived by his wife and one daughter.

Cowan, Mary Ellen (Ella) Eastin -

Mrs Mary Ellen ( Ella) Cowan, 101, the oldest woman in Lenox, died Thursday night at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Claude

Reynolds, with whom she had made her home.

She was born in Knox county, Missouri, and attended Harden college in Mexico, Mo. She had lived here since 1900.

Services were Sunday at 2:00 p. m. at the Methodist Church with Rev A. J. Clements officiating. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Her husband, William Everett Cowan died in 1922.

Obituary -

Mary Ellen (Ella) Eastin was born September 1, 1862 in Marion County, Mo. She was the daughter of Thomas Augustin Eastin and Nancy Elizabeth

Parrish Eastin. The family lived for a time, 1865-1874, in Knox County and then moved to a farm near Miami, Saline County, Mo., where she grew to

womanhood. Ella Eastin was educated in the country school near Jeddo, Mo., in Palmyra, Mo., and at Hardin College, a boarding school in Mexico, Mo.

On November 12, 1885 she married William Everett Cowan and to this union were born two daughters, Effie and Jessie, and one son, Everett. About 1894 the

family moved to Ord, Nebr., returning to Miami, Saline Co., about 1897. In 1900 they moved to Lenox, where he passed away on May 6, 1922.

Ella Cowan remained in Lenox where she has made her home with the exception of a short period when she lived with her son, Everett A. Cowan, in Kansas

City, Mo.

Mrs Cowan became an interested and active member of the Lenox Harmony Reading Circle in 1913. A few years ago she was made an honorary member.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother and a faithful friend. Her kind and gentle ways and her thoughtfulness of others endeared her to all who knew her. She was a lover of nature and all things beautiful.  She was a woman of high ideals and a perfectionist in all her endeavors.

She was united with the Methodist Church in Lenox in 1912 and was a devoted, and active member as long as health permitted.  Mrs Cowan possessed an abiding

faith in her Redeemer. She viewed life with contentment, and at its close she could say these words of the Psamist, "I will lay me down in peace."

"Thou art not dead --

For death can only take away mortal breath,

And life commencing here

is but the prelude to its full career;

And hope and Faith the blest assurance give

We do not live to die -

We die to live."

Ella Cowan passed away at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs Claude Reynolds, on Thursday evening, June 11, 1964, at the age of 101

years, 9 months and 10 days. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church with the Rev. A. J. Clements in charge and the Rev. David A.

Shaeffer of the Christian Church assisting. Her grandsons acted as pall bearers. Burial in Fairview Cemetery with Bender Funeral Home in charge.

Davis, Carol Shum -

Mrs Carol Shum Davis of St Louis, Mo passed away there Tuesday evening.  The body is being brought to the Shum-Novinger Funeral home in Bedford.  Funeral arrangements have not been completed.  Mrs Davis was the daughter of Orie and Helen Shum and formerly lived here.

Day, Daisy Irene Trent -

Daisy Irene Trent Day was was born August 10, 1894 at Guthrie Center, and departed this life at Clarinda June 18, 1964, at the age of 69 years, 10

months and 8 days.

She was married January 1, 1918, to Clarence Day of Blairsburg, Iowa. To this union were born six children, all of whom survive.

She was educated in the schools of Clinton and Norris, Mo., and when a young woman, she joined the Methodist Church of Norris, Mo.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence of Braddyville; four sons, Vernon of Gravity, Leland of Lees Summit, Mo., Donald of Kansas City, Mo., and

Darwin of Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Thelma (Mrs Duane) Huber of Lenox and Lila (Mrs Lowell) Huntsman of Clearfield; four daughter-in-laws,

two sons-in-law, one sister, Mrs Edith Fueston of Spokane, Wash., twenty one grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters, 1 brother and one grandchild, Joyce Darlene Day.

Services were held June 20th at Williams Memorial Chapel at Clarinda with the Rev. Clifford S. Ramsdale officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Pall bears were grandsons, Gary Day, Larry Day, Teddy Day, Reggie Day, Louis Huber and Lonnie Huntsman.

She was a loving wife and mother and will be greatly missed.

Herbst, Myrtle Bell Eckels -

Mrs Clyde Herbst, 90, died Friday at the Lenox Nursing Home after a long illness.  The funeral was Monday afternoon at the Methodist Church with burial in the Lenox cemetery.

Myrtle Bell Eckels, daughter of Lafe and Emma Simmons Eckels, was born near Lenox on October 11, 1883 and departed this life July 31, 1964. She spent all her life in this vicinity.  On .Feb. 12, 1908 she was united in marriage to Clyde Herbst.  To this union one daughter, Neva, was born.

Mrs Herbst was a member of the Mercer Center Church for many years and a member of the WSCS of the church, which she enjoyed a great deal.

She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, Clyde, daughter Neva Hill, son-in-law Harold, 4 grandchildren, Edwin Hill of Puerto Rico, Wendall and Gary

Hill of Lenox, and Marlene McNeal of Oskaloosa; 9 great grandchildren who were her pride and joy. Two sisters, Mrs Laura Symonds of Lenox and

Mrs Dorothy Conwell of New York.

Maharry, Ralph -

Ralph Maharry, 63 years old, died at his home in Rock Island, Ill., July 9 of a heart attack.

He leaves to mourn his death his wife Margaruite; a daughter, Mrs Patricia Rank of Rock Island and one son, Ralph Jr., in the U. S. Navy, who could

not be reached; two sisters, Mrs O. E. Bricker of Lenox and Mrs Fern Bell of Milwaukee, Wisc.; also six grandchildren, besides a host of friends.

He was buried in a Moline cemetery, with services held Saturday.

Mr and Mrs O. E. Bricker of Lenox and Mr and Mrs F. N. Bell of Milwaukee, and their daughter and family, Mr and Mrs Bruce Waterhouse of Niles,

Mich., were among those who attended the funeral and visited in the home of Mr and Mrs H. K. Walter of Moline. The Brickers returned home Sunday night.

Meagher, Kathryn J -

Kathryn J. Meagher, daughter of a pioneer Lenox merchant, passed away at her home in Detroit, Mich., July 1, 1964. Interment was made in Detroit

cemetery.

Miss Meagher is survived by one sister, Mrs Joe Kafka of Mountain View, Calif., and cousins of the Lenox vicinity.

Menoher, Wade -

Wade Menoher, 59, died suddenly Monday of a heart attack at his home in Boulder, Colo. He was a professor in the University there. His mother, Mrs. Lillie

Menoher of Lenox, left Monday night to attend the funeral which is to be at Boulder Thursday.

He leaves also his widow and a son. Mr. Menoher was a graduate of Lenox high school.

Moler, Nora Knox -

Mrs Harold (Nora) Moler, 43 of Gravity died at the hospital at Iowa City Sunday.  She was the daughter of Harold Knox and grew up here in Lenox.  The funeral is Wednesday at Bedford with burial at the Lexington cemetery.

Besides her husband and her father, survivors include a daughter, Arlene, at home, 2 sisters, Mrs Max Pool, Mt Ayr and Mrs Pauline LeBlanc, Washington, D C.

Powell, Emory Leon -

Emory L. Powell, 73, of Mt Ayr died at his home Sunday evening. Services are Wednesday at Mt Ayr with burial in the Carl cemetery.

Surviving are 6 daughters, Mrs George Austin of Lenox; Mrs Everett Bolinger of Conway, Mrs Gene Reimer, Roswell, N. M., Mrs Howard Brown, Council Bluffs, Ruth Powell, Mt Ayr, Mrs Arvid Woollums, Plattsmouth, Nebr., also 2 sons, Hurley of Blockton and Dale of Stanton.

Powell, Emory Leon -

Emory Leon Powell, son of Harrison and Rhoda Powell, was born January 13, 1891, near Mt. Etna in Adams county, Iowa. On June 28, 1964, at the age of

73 years, five months and 15 days, he departed this life in the home of his daughter, Ruth, who cared for him through his long illness.

His early years were spent on a farm near Mt Etna.

On August 19, 1914, he was united in marriage with Edna Nora Steele, and of this union were born eight children; Hurley, of Blockton; Dale of Red Oak; Mrs Leona Bolinger of Conway; Mrs Lois Austin of Lenox; Mrs Alice Reimer of Roswell, N. M.; Mrs Lela Brown of Council Bluffs; Ruth Powell of Mt. Ayr, and Mrs Shirley

Woolums, of Plattsmouth, Neb.

The first years of his married life were spent in Missouri and Nebraska where he was engaged in dredging irrigation ditches. The remaining years were spent in farming in Adams and Ringgold counties until the last six years, which he spent in retirement.

He will be remembered as a loving and devoted father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all.

Preceding him in death were his wife; a grandson, Eddie Dale Powell; his parents; a sister, Millie, and five brothers, Floyd, Marion, Earl, Alton and Cleve.

Left to cherish his memory are his eight children; two daughters-in-law, Virginia, wife of Hurley, and Pauline, wife of Dale; five sons-in-law, Everett

Bolinger, George Austin, Eugene Reimer, Howard Brown and Arvid Woollums; ten grandchildren, Pamela, and Jackie Reimer, Dennis and Donna Powell, Bobby,

Jack and John Powell, Patrick Bolinger, Roy Brown and Gregory Woollums; a brother, Ralph, of Detroit, Mich.; four sisters-in-law, Dolly Powell, of Detroit; Vera Powell of Cleveland, Ohio; Orin Garside, of Massena, and Maud Kessler of Carl; a brother-in-law, Frank Steele, of Mt. Etna; several nieces and nephews and a host

of friends.

Funeral services were held July 1, at 2 p. m., from the Rhoades Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev Orville C. Rinehart, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Mr and Mrs Bill Harover sang, accompanied at the organ by Margaret Pence and pallbearers were Harry DeVore, Roy DeVore, Ned Murray, Earl DeVore, Geo Hosfelt

and Donald Powell. Interment was in the Carl, Iowa cemetery.

Pyle, Helen Menoher -

Relatives in Lenox received word of the death of Mrs Corwin (Helen) Pyle of Pueblo, Colo.  Helen was the daughter of the late Rev and Mrs E. S.

Menoher. She was a niece of Mrs Llllie Menoher and a cousin of Mrs Virgil Vincent of Lenox. Services and burial were in Colorado Thursday.

Pyle, Helen Menoher -

Helen Pyle was the oldest daughter of the late Rev and Mrs E S Menoher and was born at Grant, Iowa, July 7, 1899. She was in an automobile accident May 10 and was in the hospital for 5 weeks. She was taken to her home June 17, but on June 22 she had a heart attack and passed away suddenly.

Helen was known when a girl in this section of Iowa, having lived in the parsonage with her parents at New Market, Mt. Ayr, Clearfield, Corning and Villlsca. She was a graduate of the Villisca high school and of Simpson College, having majored in music. She taught voice in several Iowa schools until her marriage to Corwin A. Pyle.

Soon after their marriage they went to Colorado where Corwin obtained a position in the Post Office, where he has continued to work. Helen taught a large class of piano and organ students and was organist for the First Congregational Church of Pueblo for 30 years.

At her funeral the organ was closed and on top was a vase of beautiful red roses in her memory.

Besides her husband and his mother, Mrs Edna Pyle of Pueblo, she leaves a sister, Mrs Everett (Mary) Pratt of Cedar Rapids, her brother, Paul E Menoher of Anderson, Calif., two aunts, Mrs Lillie Menoher of Lenox and Mrs Nelle Nevius of New Market, several nephews, cousins and many friends.

Ryerson, Aurora B Stephens -

Aurora B. Stephens, eldest daughter of James E. and Mary Jane Mullen Stephens was born in Adams county, Feb. 17, 1882 and passed away at Bentonville,

Ark., May 23, 1964 at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 6 days.

At an early age her parents moved to Lenox where she went through the Lenox Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1908. She taught in the

rural schools for a number of years. Later in the Conway school, she taught for one year and for five years in the high school at Riverton, Iowa.

In her early youth she united with the Methodist Church in Lenox, maintaining that relationship in each place of residence. She was active in church work as long as her health would permit and faithfully attended to the last.

On June 21, 1910 she was united in marriage to William R. Ryerson, who preceded her in death on Nov. 25, 1931. Four children were born into this home, all of whom survive.

They are Mrs Doyle (Elizabeth) Carpenter of Spencer, la., Mrs Harmon (Naomi) Kurtz of LaJolla, Cali., Mrs Glen (Marjorie) Phillips of Bentonville, Ark.,

and Max Ryerson of Woodland Hills, Cal. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs Pearl Smith of Hastings, Neb., and

Mrs Arlene Veiling of Ladysmith, Wise., one brother, Hugh Stephens of Sheldon, Wisc., one uncle, George W. Mullen of Creston and many cousins.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one niece.

Forty-five years of her married life were spent in Red Oak, where her family was raised. In 1960 she disposed of the old home and moved to Bentonville, Ark., spending her declining years in a home close to that of a daughter. Her entire family was with her in her last illness.

Funeral services were held in the Sellergren Funeral home at Red Oak at 2:00 p. m., May 28, 1964. Rev Cecil Wells, pastor of the Red Oak Methodist Church

officiated. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery at Red Oak.

Saunders, Agnes Vienna Hill -

Mrs Charles (Agnes) Saunders, 76, died Monday at her home 4 miles east of Lenox. She was born in Iowa and had lived in this vicinity 46 years. She

was a member of the United Presbyterian Church at Lenox, a member of the MFC club, Lenox, and the Creston Women's club.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 2:00 p. m., at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox. Burial in the Lenox cemetery. The body is at the Bender Funeral

Home here. Her husband, Charles, died 4 years ago.

Survivors are 3 daughters: Mrs Grace Verlee Rogers, Kennewick, Wash., Mrs Dorothy Kennedy, Portland, Oregon, Mrs Jean Douglas, Waterloo, la.; 2

sons, Vernon Saunders, Bozeman, Mont., Donald Saunders, of Lenox and 10 grandchildren.

Saunders, Agnes Vienna Hill -

Agnes Vienna Hill Saunders, daughter of Peter and Lydia Hill was born near Mt Etna, Adams County, Iowa on August 11, 1887 and passed away June 15, 1964 at her home east of Lenox at the age of 76 years, ten months and 4 days.

She attended rural school and graduated from Corning Academy in 1908. After the family moved to the farm north of Corning she taught in rural schools of Adams County and in the Prescott school.

On June 21, 1911, she was married to Charles R. Saunders of Lenox. They spent their married life on farms near Lenox, having spent the last 46 years on their farm

4 miles east of Lenox.

To this union five children were born, Mrs Jean Douglas, now of Waterloo, Vernon of Bozeman, Mont., Mrs Luther (Grace Verlee) Rogers of Kennewich,

Wash., and twins Donald of Lenox and Mrs Thomas (Dorothy) Kennedy of Portland, Oregon.

When a young girl, she became a member of the Presbyterian Church in Corning. After moving to Lenox she changed her membership to the First

Presbyterian Church of Lenox. She was an active member of the church, the Womans Church Organization, and the Lenox MFC club until her health failed.

In addition to the five children named above she is survived by two sons-in-laws, Luther Rogers of Kennewick, Wash., and Thomas Kennedy of Portland, Oregon; two daughters-in-law, Dorothy Saunders of Bozeman, Mont., and June Saunders of Lenox; also ten grandchildren whom she dearly loved; Verlee Rae and Bonnie

Nadine Saunders of Bozeman, Mont., Vickie Lee, Kathryn Ann, Debra Sue and Gary Alan Saunders of Lenox, Charles, Duane, Janet Rae and James William Rogers of Kennewick, Wash., and David Andrew Kennedy of Portland, Ore. Also surviving is one brother, Donald C. Hill of Corning, and nieces and nephews and a host of

friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles on June 12, 1960; also preceding her in death were her parents, two sisters, one son-in-law and a

grandson.

Services were held on Thursday, June 18, at the United Presbyterian Church, the Rev. W. H. Sinning officiating. Music was by Mrs Norma Paymal who

accompanied Roland Buxton as he sang "Have Thine Own Way," and "Nearer My God to Thee." Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Pall bearers were Gene Paymal, Max Badgett, Harley Morley, Harvey Wurster, Herman Haering and Everett Symonds.

Schaske, William E -

William E. Schaske,. age 76, died at 4 p. m. Monday, June 22, 1964 at the Atlantic Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for several weeks.

He was born in Anita, Iowa, Nov. 15, 1887, the son of John and Elizabeth Oskhe Schaske and was married to Mayme A. Peterson, November 15, 1916 at

Canton, S. Dak. Several years were spent in farming in the Lenox area before moving to Anita in 1947.

Mr Schaske was a member of the Congregational Church in Anita. He was the youngest of a family of seven children.

Surviving are his wife, two sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Wednesday June 24 at the Long Funeral home in Anita, with Rev Vern Willey officiating. Burial was in the Anita Evergreen cemetery.

Sweeney, Margaret Ellen -

Miss Margaret Sweeney, 42, daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Sweeney of Lenox, was killed Sunday night in a car accident near Denver, Colo.  Miss Sweeney and four others, all the occupants of the car, were killed when the car ran into a bridge at the end of a tunnel.

The group had been to a parish picnic in the mountains north of Denver.  Miss Sweeney and three other young women were riding with the Rev. R F Hamilton, 35, assistant pastor of Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Denver.

Miss Sweeney had been employed in Denver for a number of years.  Her mother, her brothers, George and Stephen and brother-in-law, Dean Evans went to Colorado to take charge of arrangements.

The body will be at the Bender Funeral Home after 3 pm Thursday.  Rosary will be said Thursday at 3 pm.  Services will be at St. Patrick's Church at 10 a.m. Friday.

Besides her parents, 6 sisters and four brothers survive.

Sweeney, Margaret Ellen -

Funeral services for Margaret Ellen Sweeney were held at St. Patrick's Church, Lenox, Iowa, at 10:00 a. m. on July 3, 1964.

Miss Sweeney was born in Imogene, Iowa, on July 2, 1921, the eldest of the eleven children of Mr and Mrs Frank Sweeney of Lenox.

A resident of Denver for the past 18 years, Miss Sweeney was employed by Kerby Petroleum Co. of Denver as a private secretary. An active member of

Immaculate Cathedral Parish, Miss Sweeney and her companions were killed instantly on highway U. S. 87 as they were returning from a C. C. D. picnic

held at Camp St. Malo in Estes Park, Colo.

Surviving besides her parents, Mr and Mrs Frank Sweeney of Lenox are six sisters, Mrs Doyle (Florence) Robinson, Clearfield, Mrs Jack (Maureen) Walton of

Wheat Ridge, Colo., Mrs Dean (Mary) Evans of Lenox, Mrs Gerry (Catherine) Rainforth of Conway, Frances and Carol Ann Sweeney of Omaha, Nebr., and

four brothers, Bill of Prescott, George of Conway, and Hubert and Stephen of Lenox.

Wilson, Glen L -

Funeral services were Saturday afternoon at Des Moines for Glen L. Wilson, 72, who died Thursday at his home there. Burial was at Glendale cemetery

in Des Moines.

Mr. Wilson was born on a farm between Clearfield and Lenox and was graduated from the Clearfield high school.

He was retired, but was working during vacations at the Motor Supply Company in Des Moines and had worked on Monday and Tuesday of last week.

Survivors are his widow, Vera; 2 daughters, Mrs. Annabelle Beckner, of Perry, Mrs. Betty Lou Jeffryes, of Alamosa, Colo,; 4 grandchildren, 4 sisters,

Mrs. Eugene Goodale, of Lenox, Mrs. John Fling, of Kansas City, Mo., Miss Fern Wilson of Mason City, and Mrs. Charles Everett, of Minneapolis, Minn.
