Mrs.
A. N. Beatty, a long time resident of Clearfield, but more
recently of Des Moines, died Feb. 14 at the home of her daughter,
Mrs.
Fred Bonebrake at the age of 83 years. Her husband, A. N.
Beatty
and one son Donald, preceded her in death. Surviving
are
one son, J. Mayo Beatty of Des Moines, and five daughters, Mrs.
A. E.
Neely and Mrs. G. L. Hardin of Des Moines; Mrs. Fred
Bonebrake, Blockton; Mrs. C. C. Musgrove of Newton, la.; and
Mrs.
O. H. Walcott of La Grange Ill. Funeral services were held
Monday
at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Des Moines with burial
at the Resthaven cemetery.

Besco, Beryle Bourke -
Beryle Bourke Besco, son of Edna and Mae Besco was born in
Taylor
County near Platteville on April 28, 1918 and entered into
rest at his home in Conway November 28, 1952 at the age of
34
years and 7 months.
He
moved with his parents to Conway where he finished High School. He operated the
Fred Cooper filling station and drove
one of the school buses in this vicinity until
failing health prevented
these activities. He joined the local M. E. Church. He is a member
of the Masonic Lodge also a Royal Arch Mason and member
of the Eastern Star Chapter. He has suffered for many years but only gave up to
the ravages of disease the last year. He was preceded in death by a brother
Ernest. He leaves his father and mother, sister, Viola, grandfather and several
uncles, aunts, and cousins.
Beryle will be missed in the community by all who knew him.
Funeral
services were held at the M. E. Church in Conway Nov.
30,
1952. Rev. E. John Kess was the
minister Casket bearers were
Elmer Freemyer, Glen Clark, Cleo Redburn, Sim Beemer, Dee
Hewitt,

Elwocd Brown, 57, of Greenfield died early Tuesday afternoon
at the Greenfield hospital following a long illness. He was owner and operator of
the hotel at Greenfield, and was former owner of Hotel Lenox. He was an actives
worker in the Masonic order and in the Eastern Star.
Survivors:
his wife, Esther; brother, James, of Griswold: sisters, Mrs. Arthur Steele, of Tarron and Mrs. W. C. Harover, of
.Lenox.
Funeral
services are being held today, Thursday, at 12:30 at Greenfield and another
service at 3 p. m. at Carson, with burial there. Rev. Merwin Goad of Boone will conduct the service

Relatives
here received word Sunday of the accidental death
of R.
Dean Case, 19, of Layton, Utah, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Case, formerly of
this community. The telegram stated that the young man was killed instantly in
a truck accident. Dean had been married about two weeks. He was born on a farm
in the Lenox community and lived near here for a number of years. Survivors
include his widow, his father and mother, and three, sisters. Uncles and aunts
in this vicinity are Earl Case and Rolland Buxton of Lenox, Roy Case of
Prescott, Mrs. Donald Hill of Corning, and Clifford and Lloyd Buxton
of Creston. Mr. and Mrs. Hill of Corning left Sunday night to attend funeral
services.

Ed T. Cheese, 81, a former resident of Lenox, died Thursday evening,
August 14, at, his home in Los Angeles, Calif., according
to word received by relatives. Mr. Cheese
left here about 1898.

services were at Seattle. Wash. Survivors include his widow, Bertha; two brothers, George of Lenox and John of Evanston, Wyo.; a
nephew, Harry Cheese and a niece, Mrs. Glen Leckliter, both of Lenox.

Clarke, Alpha –
Alpha Clarke, age 76 years passed away
suddenly at his home in North Clearfield at 3 p.m. Nov. 26.
He grew to manhood in the Clearfield
vicinity and in June 1902 was married to Miss Stella Hess. His entire life was spent near and in the
town of Clearfield. Farming was his chosen
occupation. He was a member of the
Methodist Church.
Two cousins, Glen Williams of Atlantic,
and Howard F. Williams, who died m 1950 made their home with Mr. and Mrs. Clark and were
loved as their own. Mr. Clark is survived by his wife Stella, one sister, Alice Cowell of Venice, Calif., two nieces and one nephew.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Methodist Church and burial in Clearfield
Cemetery.

Mrs.
Earl Hudson has received word of the recent death of
Forrest
Cline, Dean of Music at State Teacher’s College at Greeley, Colo. for 40 or
more years. Prof. Cline was the son of early Lenox residents Mr. and Mrs. Jim Cline,
charter members of the local Christian Church. A brother Cliff Cline, a dentist in Kansas City, survives besides his
wife and daughter.

Mabel
E. Polsley was born to Octavaa S. and Dlce Polsley at
Coin,
Iowa, October 25, 1881, and departed this life November 28,
1952,
aged 71 years one month parture besides her faithful
Page County with her parents until 1907 when they moved to Taylor County where
she has lived ever since. She was united in marriage to C. Harry Curry March
23, 1921.
Mabel
joined the Methodist church when a girl and has been
a faithful member and attended regularly as long as health would
permit.
She took some nurses training in the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines and was a
great help in many of the homes in our community in times of illness.
She
was a practical Christian in every day life. She leaves to mourn her death
three days. She lived in husband, one brother, Ross J.
Polsley of Blanchard, Iowa; and one sister Osa L. Taylor of Denver,
Colorado;
also two nieces, Thelma Longfellow and Janice Snyder of Clearfield and a nephew, Galen Polsley of Coin Iowa.
Her
parents and one brother Russell H. Polsley preceded her
in death.
Funeral
Services were held Monday at the Methodist Church
in Clearfield and burial in Coin Iowa.

Duey, Scharlotte Finkheimer -
Mrs.
Stephen Duey, of Clearfield, 68 years of age, died
Sunday,
Jan.
4, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joey Spring in Lenox. Funeral services were held Wednesday; Jan. 7, at the Methodist Church in
Clearfield. The Rev. Wilmer Doughty of Burlington, a life long friend,
officiated, assisted by Rev. C. E. McPherson. Interment was in Clearfield
Cemetery.
OBITUARY
Scharlotte Finkheiner, daughter of Johan and Rosene Finkheiner,
was born in Wertenberg, Germany, April 18, 1884 and
passed from this mortal life in Lenox, Iowa, Jan. 4 1953 at the age of 68
years, 8 months and 16 days. The parents
with their family came to Graham, Mo. in 1885 but when Scharlotte was 6 years old they returned to their native country. After staying a year in
Germany, they again came back to Graham, Mo.
It was
there that she spent her youth and grew to womanhood.
On
April 5, 1905 she was united in marriage to Stephen Duey,
and they lived near Graham, Mo. until 1923, when they moved to a farm northwest
of Lenox, la. To this union were born
four daughters, Eathyl Mclntire,
Creston, la., Rosetta Corliss, Conway, la.; Mollie Johnston Creston, la.; Joey
Spring, Lenox, la.; and two sons: John of Clearfield, and L. J. of Allison, la.
The
Christian life of Mrs. Duey, dated from her girlhood,. when she united with the
Presbyterian Church in Graham, Mo. and later transferred her membership to the Oak Grove Church. She was steadfast in
her Christian faith to the last. She was
forgetful of self in
her untiring ministry to others and her devotion to her husband
and children and care of her home came first. She was held in esteem by her friends
for her beautiful traits of character.
To
cherish her memory are her loving husband, the six children and their
companions, 16 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren also five sisters: Anna Yount, Irvington, Nebr.; Rose Dodd, Sabetha, Kans.; Louise
Steel, Onawa, Mich.; Lena Wright, Elba, Colo.; Sophia Sticken,
Graham, Mo.; and two brothers. Fred Finkheiner, Youma, Colo., Chris Finkheiner,
Miles City, Mont.; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
She
was preceded in death by her parents and three grandchildren.

church of Corning, officiated. Burial was in the Macksburg cemetery. Mrs. Freeman is the former Darlene Mosby. In addition to the parents, one sister,

A
daughter, Pearl Brown, died in 1923. Mr.
Gill passed away in 1939.

Cora
N. Schafroth, daughter of Fred and Margaret Schafroth, was born February 27, 1872 in Adams county,
Iowa, on what is known as the Vernon farm and passed away November 17, 1952, at
the age of 80 years, 8 months, 21 days in the Lenox Rest Home where she was
tenderly cared for the past two years.
She
was united, in marriage to Robert A. Gill January 2, 1895,
at her father's home. They began housekeeping on the Gill farm south of Ivyville and lived there until 1922, when they moved to
Corning, Iowa. Three children were born to this union, Pearl (Gill) Brown,
deceased; Harold A. of Lenox and Clifford F., who lives on the family farm.
At the
early age of thirteen she joined the Ivyville Methodist church and was an active worker. Her main thought was of the young people, having taught the young
peoples class a good many years. She transferred her membership to the Corning
M. E. church and remained a faithful worker as long as her health permitted.
Surviving
her are her two sons, Harold A. of Lenox, Clifford F.
of Brooks; her daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, Otho W.
Brown
of Brooks, Perry Bergesen of Denver, Colo., Pfc.
Donald
W.
Gill of the Marine Corps at LeJeune, N. C.; three
great
grandchildren,
Dennis W. Brown of Brooks, Ronald C. and Pamela
Sue Bergesen of Denver, Colo. also one brother Max Schafroth
of Denver, Colo., and a number of nieces and nephews.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Gill; daughter, Pearl Brown,
and Grandson, Robert A Gill Jr.; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Riley, Mrs. Mary
McClelland and Clara Schafroth. Mrs. Gill was a devoted mother, a good
neighbor, a loyal friend, and a true Christian and will be missed by many
friends who join in extending sympathy to the family.
The
funeral was held at the Lines Funeral home on Thursday
afternoon,
Nov. 20, with Rev. Frank Jacobs, pastor of the Corning Methodist church,
conducting the service. Music was furnished by John Riegel,
accompanied by Mrs. Joe Cook. Pall bearers were Clarence Naven,
Clyde Hall, Ralph Harvey, Bryan Holbrook, Ralph
Huntington and John Groff. Burial was in Prairie Rose cemetery

born in Jasper County, Iowa. She moved
with her parents to Taylor County when she was a small child. She was married
to Richard E. Gordon and they lived in Iowa many years, but
have been living in Los Angeles, Calif., the past fifteen years. Three sons preceded Mrs. Gordon in death. She
leaves her husband and a sister, Mrs. Maude G. Tull.

Word has
been received at Lenox that Irvin Graham. 58,
a Missionary
was killed in a plane crash on Tuesday along
with 23 others near Goina, South American. Services and burial will be at Jatai, Brazil. He had been attending a conference at Sao
Paulo and was enroute home. Survivors include his wife, Ruth
who is a cousin of H. Roy Long of Lenox; 4 sons, James, Prof, of
English
at Central College, Pella; William, a student at Xenia
Seminary,
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Stanly, attending Monmouth
college,
Monmouth. Illinois, and Robert, a student at Central College,
Pella. He was a brother in law of Hugh Wvant,
Leon, and a son in law of Mr.and Mrs. J. W. Wyant, also of Leon. The wife Ruth, also a
Missionary, will be the only relative attending the funeral.

Hassell,
Harry -
Harrry Hassell was born to Charles and Laura Hassell in Ringgold County January 4, 1892 and passed away
Dec. 23, 1952. aged 60 years 11 months and 19 days.
He was
united in marriage to Mrs. Grace Gard, September 10,
1936. He
joined the Methodist Church, April 15. 1906. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars,
and saw battle service in France in World War I.
Mr. Hassell followed farming most of his life changing to
carpentering the last five years. This
he followed until health
would not permit. He leaves to mourn his departure besides his true and faithful
wife, one brother Bert of Diagonal; one sister, Mrs. Guy
Horton
of Lenox; and two nephews.
He was
a good neighbor, friendly with everybody, going about in a quiet manner, and
was faithful to his mother and will be missed by those who knew him.
Funeral
Services were held Dec. 26, the Rev. C. McPherson
officiating.
Burial was in Clearfield cemetery.

Bert Wright -
Bert Hinshaw, 83, retired farmer, died Tuesday morning at 1:30
o'clock at the Rosary Hospital in Corning. He suffered a stroke Saturday and
never regained consciousness. Funeral services are being held today Thursday,
at the Arnold Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Claude Risinger.
Burial will be in the Lenox cemetery.
Obituary
Bert
Wright, son of Mary Jane and Asael Hinshaw, was born Sept. 6, 1869 in Kennard, Ind., and
departed this life Feb. 3, 1953, at the age of 83 years, 5 months and 28
days. He was the fourth child in
the family of seven and was preceded in death by three sisters,
one brother and one grandchild.
The living are Grace Munden of Bedford
and Effie Deardorff of
Muncie,
Ind. He was married in 1889. To this union were born two children, Guy of
Snohomish, Wash., and Fern Lopeman of Ephrata,
Wash.
Jan.
25, 1910 he was married to Matry Alverda Franklin of Blockton. Two sons, Loren of Clearfield
and Ronald of Lenox were born to this union.
He
came with his parents to Taylor County at the age of 2 years and spent his
boyhood here. About 1900 he moved to Washington where he worked in the saw mills
and mining camps. In 1908 he returned to Taylor County where he engaged in
farming until he retired at the
age of 73 and moved to Lenox.
He
became a member of the Christian Church at Clearfield in 1929, later
transferring his membership to the Lenox Christian Church.
He was
a kind and loving father always ready to lend a helping
hand.
He was known as 'Bert" by all who knew him, including his grandchildren,
who will greatly miss him.
He is
survived by his wife, Verda, three sons and their
wives, the daughter and her husband, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Jones, Charles William Jr. -
Chas.
Jones, Jr., 43, farmer living east of Sharpsburg, died Friday night from
injuries received in a farm tractor accident. He evidently fell from his
tractor while plowing and his body was caught by the plow. When he didn't come in from work that
evening, his family
found him unconscious. He was brought to Lenox for first aid
treatment and then taken to the Municipal hospital at Clarinda
where he passed away. Funeral services were
Tuesday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church at Sharpsburg, conducted by Rev.
Watkins.
Burial
was at Gravity. Shum Funeral home at Bedford had charge of arrangements.
OBITUARY
Charles
William Jones, Jr., son of Charles William and Fannie Elizabeth Jones, was born Nov.
23, 1909, at the farm home two miles east of Sharpsburg. He died Nov. 21, 1952, two days before his
43rd birthday.
Jones
was the youngest of a family of five children. His parents and one sister
preceded him in death. Surviving are one brother, G.
R.
Jones of Almyra, Ark., and two sisters, Mrs. Harold
Allison, Shelton, Neb., and Mrs. Harry Stewart, Bedford.
In
1929 Mr. Jones was married to Coral Elizabeth Damewood.
Two
daughters were born to this union, namely, Coral Belle
of the home, a senior in the Lenox high school, and Mary
Margaret Hurd of Omaha. The
wife and daughters survive. Among
other survivors are also 7 nieces, 9 nephews, 7 great nieces and 9 great nephews.
Mr.
Jones lived all his life on the farm where he was born. After his marriage he moved to the residence
on the farm where his grandfather Jones settled in the early seventies. Tie was
a member of the Presbyterian Church at Sharpsburg. He will be remembered as a
conscientious worker, a good neighbor and a willing helper whenever needed and
won the love and respect of all who knew him. With his passing his family and friends feel a lose that can never be replaced.
Mrs.
Jones is an employee of Folcey's Market
, at Lenox and
the store was closed Tuesday afternoon during the funeral services.

Frances Loretta Hockabout -
Mrs.
W. J. (Frances) Kilby suffered a stroke Wednesday
evening,
Feb.
4, and passed away about 8:30 p. m. She had not been seriously
ill and her death came as a shock to the family and community. Mrs. Kilby was 79 years old Tuesday, Feb. 3. She was born near Lenox
and lived here all of her life. The body
is at the Arnold Funeral Home. Services will be Saturday at 2 p. m. at the
Christian Church in Lenox.
Survivors
in the immediate family are four daughters, Mae, Ruth, Vera and Bernice, all of
the home in Lenox, and a sister, Mrs. Eva Rupert of Mt. Ayr.
There are 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Two sons are deceased: Leslie, who died two
years ago and William Glen.

Kilby, Frances
Loretta Hockabout –
Frances
Loretta Hockabout, daughter of Mary Jane and Lorenzo
K. Hockabout, was born February 3, 1874, on a farm 1½
miles west of Lenox. As a result of cerebral hemorrhage, she departed this life
quite suddenly on Feb. 4, 1953, at the age of 79 years and one day.
She early
years of her life were spent with her parents and six brothers and sisters on
the farm where she was born.
She was
united in marriage to William J. Kilby Feb. 12,
1891. The family lived on a farm 4 miles
west of town until 1917 when they came to Lenox. In 1921 the family moved to the home in Lenox
where she lived until her death
.
In
earl life she united with the Blue Grove Christian church and was a member
there until she united with the Lenox church.
Her
husband and two sons, Leslie J. and Glen W. preceded her in death. Her parents,
one infant sister, Minnie, one half brother, Delbert Clouse and three full
brothers, Benjamin J., William R., and Samuel J. also preceded her in death.
She
leaves to mourn her passing: four daughters, Mae, Ruth
Vera
and Bernice who made their home with her; one sister
Mrs.
Eva Rupert of Mt. Ayr; 8 grandchildren, 12 great
grandchildren,
a daughter-in-law and many relatives and friends.
She was
a loving wife and mother, greatly beloved by family and friends. Her loyalty
and devotion as a member of the church and of the M. P. C., as well as her many
acts of neighborliness and kindness all speak for her life as a Christian.
Funeral
services were Feb. 7 at the Christian Church at Lenox,
conducted by C. W. Risinger, Christian minister. Burial was in
Fairview cemetery.

Thomas
L. Kuhn, 60, assessor of Taylor County, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 15, at the
St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, Mo.
Mr.
Kuhn served in the Taylor County Courthouse as auditor
four years, clerk of the court four years, Representative in
the state legislature one term, and worked in the state auditor's
office two years in the Homestead Extension department, and
has been county assessor four years.
He leaves four children, Mrs. Arthur King of Blockton,. Mrs.
Olson
and two sons Jim Andy and Thomas L. Jr., all of Seattle,
Washington. Funeral services will be held from the
Wetmore Funeral Home in Bedford at 2 p. m. Friday afternoon with burial in
Graceland Cemetery.

Granville,
son of Enoch and Mary Laycock was born, May 27, 1874
in Shelby County Ia. He passed away at
his home in Conway Dec. 30, 1952 at the age of 78 years, 7 months and three days.
He moved to Conway with his parents at the age of 8 years and resided there the
remainder of his life. He was preceded
in death by his father and mother and a brother, Homer, and a sister Goldie.
He is
survived by a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Palmer and her husband W. W. Palmer of
Conway, three nephews, Dwight Coburn of El Reno, Okla., Darrell Palmer of Des
Moines, Wendell Palmer of Council Bluffs, two nieces, Mrs. Hilda Clark of El
Reno, Okla, and Mrs. Mary Forcade of Graham, Mo. He will be greatly missed also by five great nieces, two great
nephews and one great great nephew. Kute was a familiar figure around town and will be missed

Lininger, Thomas -
Thomas Lininger, 79, bachelor farmer of the Diagonal
community,
was found dead of a gun shot wound Sunday afternoon. The Ringgold County coroner
gave a verdict of suicide. A neighbor,
Elmer Orr found the body. Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 10, with burial
at Hickory Grove.

Effie Ramsey –
Relatives here received word of the sudden death last week
of Mrs. Effie Ramsey McCain at her home in Nampa, Idaho. She formally lived in this community. Funeral services were Monday afternoon, Feb.
23 at Nampa. She is survived by her
husband, Lem McCain, seven children, seven
grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Elmer McCreight of Clearfield, nieces and nephews. Mildred McCreight of this community is a niece.
