Oswald Hoover, 84, Former Resident, Dies

Oswald Hoover, 84, a former resident of the community south east of Bedford, died at the home of his son, Frank [Francis Oswald] Hoover in Modesto, Calif., Monday, January 26, according to word received by relatives here.  He is survived by three sons.  Also by a sister, Mrs. Zelda Hoover Streeter of Lompoc, Calif., and by a brother, Don Hoover, of Quincy, Ill.

Oswald Hoover, 82, Passes Away Here
Oswald Hoover, 82, a resident of Modesto for thirty years, died in the home of a son, Attorney Francis O. Hoover, on Santa Rita Avenue early this morning.
A native of Bedford, Iowa, Hoover, a retired farmer, came to California fifty two years ago, locating in Santa Barbara County. He moved to Modesto in 1911 and since 1935 has been making his home with his son.
Besides his son here, he leaves two other sons, Colonel Hubert D. Hoover of Boston and Benjamin B. Hoover of San Juan Bautista. He was a brother of Don Hoover of Quincy, Ill., and Mrs. L. [ouis] D. [avid]Streeter of Lompoc and the grandfather of Robert F. Hoover of Yakima, Wash., Benjamin B. Hoover of Berkeley, Holman D. Hoover of Washington, D. C. and Hubert D. Hoover, Jr., of Boston, Mass.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock in the Shannon Chapel, Rev. T. Ross Paden, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, of which Hoover was a member, will officiate. Interment will be in the Citizens Cemetery.

Services Are Held For Oswald Hoover

Funeral services for Oswald Hoover, 82, a resident of Modesto for thirty years, were held this morning in the Shannon Chapel with Rev. T. Ross Paden, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.

A native of Bedford, Iowa, Hoover died in the home of a son, Attorney Francis O.[swald] Hoover, on Santa Rita Avenue early Monday.

A retired farmer, he came to California fifty-two years ago, locating in Santa Barbara County. He moved to Modesto in 1911, and since 1935 has been making his home with his son.

Besides his son here, he leaves two other sons, Colonel Hubert D. [on] Hoover of Boston and Benjamin B. [uford] Hoover of San Juan Bautista. He was a brother of Don Hoover of Quincy, Ill., and Mrs. L. [ouis] D. [avid] Streeter [Zelda] of Lompoc and the grandfather of Robert F. [rancis] Hoover of Yakima, Wash., Benjamin B. Leon John Dies in Auburn, Nebr.

Leon John, 69, a former resident of Bedford, died Monday, April 13 at the Hoover Nursing Home in Auburn, Nebraska, where he had been ill for several weeks.

The funeral services were held at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Auburn at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning and the body was brought to Bedford for burial in the Graceland cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Girda John of Bedford; and by four sons, Vearon and Donald of Bedford, Harold of Auburn, and Albert of Corning, all of whom attended the last rites.  Mrs. Vearon John [Ruth Hennegin], Mrs. Harold John [Dorothy Henry] and Mrs. Albert John also attended the funeral services.

OBITUARY

Leon John

Funeral services for Leon John, who died at Auburn, Nebraska, Tuesday, April 14, were held at the Armstrong Funeral Home in that city, Wednesday morning, conducted by Rev. Harry D. Keefer.  Burial was in the Graceland cemetery west of Bedford, where short services were held at the grave the same afternoon.

Leon Elgin John, son of Jackson and Mary Elizabeth John, was born at Bedford, Iowa, July 8, 1872, being aged 69 years, 9 months and 6 days at the time of his death.

He was married to Girda Stickelman, April 1, 1896.  To them were born four sons: Vearon J. and Leon Donald of Bedford, Albert W. of Corning and Leland Harold of Auburn, Nebr.

Surviving with the wife and four sons are three sisters, Mrs. Agnes Knox, of Clifton, Kans.; Mrs. Nettie Fuller of Hinton, Okla.; Mrs. Lola Witt of St. Joseph, Mo.; two brothers, Kinsey John of Sharpsburg and Lawrence John of Bedford; a stepbrother, Sam Hayes of Bedford and several grandchildren.

He became a member of the Christian church in Bedford at an early age and was always faithful to the teachings of his early life.  The greater portion of his life was spent near Bedford.

Obituary

Sarah Elizabeth Weir

Sarah Elizabeth Meloy, daughter of Mary Phillips and Allen Meloy, was born Sept. 9, 1865, in Clark County, near Martinsville, Illinois, and departed this life in the hospital at Iowa City on Oct. 30, 1942, aged 77 years, one month and 21 days.

Her early life was spent in Clark County, Ill., where she was married to John Thomas Weir, Feb. 27, 1882, who preceded her in death Feb. 20, 1919.

Four children were born to this union.

The family resided in Illinois 10 years and later moved to Taylor County, Ia., fifty years ago, where they have since made their home.

When a young woman she united with the Baptist Church and remained a faithful member.

She was generous and loving; and was sympathetic and considerate to all with whom she came in contact.  She was a patient and loving wife and mother.

She leaves to mourn her loss, four children, Samuel A. [lbert] of Bedford; Mrs. Maude [Bailie] Dorr, New Market; Clarence M., Cedar Falls, and Mrs. Leona Smalley of Conway.

Seventeen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; one sister, Miss Ruth Meloy, Bedford; two brothers, Max Meloy, Kansas City, Mo., and Archie Meloy, Des Moines.

Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Wetmore funeral home in Bedford by the Rev. O.H. Hallgrimson.  Burial was in the Fairview cemetery of Bedford.

J.D. Parks Dies; Funeral Sunday

J.D. Parks, who had been in ill health for several months, died at his home in Bedford Friday, April 16.

The funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. O. H. Hallgrimson.  Burial was in the Lexington cemetery.

Jonathan Davis Parks, son of John Marion and Sarah Catherine [Ragon] Parks, was born November 4, 1863 near Danville, Indiana, and passed away at the age of 73 years, 5 months and 12 days.

At the age of six years he moved with his parents to Taylor County, where he spent the greater part of his life.  When just a young man he united with the Baptist church.

On September 9, 1884 he was married to Rachael Carmichael at Braddyville, Iowa, and they enjoyed 58 years of wedded life.

They were the parents of five children, Earl R. Parks of Grapeview, Washington, and Cora E. Thompson [Mrs. Troy Thompson] of Bedford, who are still living; Joseph M., Isaac H. [ugh] and Charles A., who preceded their father in death.  Besides the wife and five children, five brothers survive, William Parks of Chicago, Charles Parks of Culdesac, Idaho, L. A. Parks of Conway, Ed Parks of Clarkston, Washington, T. J. Parks of Carlisle, Iowa; and one sister, Mrs. D. [avid] E. [lmer] Chilcote [Harriet Luella] of Bedford; also four granddaughters and five great grandchildren.  Three sisters, one brother and one granddaughter preceded him in death.

Mr. Parks was always kind and considerate.  He was a good neighbor and kind friend and will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.

Mrs. Ella Patton, 82, Succumbs Jan. 3

Mrs. Ellen [Gilbert] Patton died at her home northwest of Bedford Sunday, January 2, 1944, after having been in failing health for several years.

The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Albert E. Coe, a relative.  Burial was in the Graceland cemetery.

Obituary---Mrs. Ellen Patton

Ellen Patton, youngest daughter of Gershom Waite and Mary McCloud Gilbert was born July 2, 1869 and died January 2, 1944 at the age of 75 years and 6 months.  She lived her entire life in the old Gilbert homestead.

On October 6, 1889, she was married to Fred H. Patton, who preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1920 at the age of 55 years, and 9 months.

To this union two children were born: Kate M and Ralph.  The son Ralph died in France during the First World War.

One and one-half years previous to the death of the husband and father, Kate and husband, Walter Thompson, went to live at the old home and care for her mother, who was ill.  For twenty-four years she was an invalid and they have patiently and lovingly cared for her.  The four last years were spent in an invalid's chair, yet her hands were always busy fashioning beautiful needlework as gifts.

In her early girlhood she united with the Gilead church and as long as health permitted she was active in all the community affairs.  She was always quick to respond to the call when relatives, friends or neighbors were ill or in need of help.

Surviving are the daughter, Kate M Thompson and husband; two grandchildren, Phyllis Henry and Ellen Jean Mullen, four great grandchildren, Gerald Mullen, Larry Glen Mullen, Julia Marie Henry, Philip David Henry.  Also one sister-in-law, Rena Patton of Los Angeles, California.

The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Albert E. Coe, Methodist pastor at Dysart, Iowa.  Burial was in the Graceland cemetery.
