[BRIGGS, MINNIE MARIE]
[BRUCE, GEORGE ALBERT, SR.] He was born July 8, 1930, in Montgomery County, Iowa, to Edwin and Katherine Schaub Bruce and remained in the area until he came to Villisca in 1953. During his life he worked for the railroad, Eric Olson at the Villisca Elevator, Bill Marsh at Nelson's Dairy, Duane Rhamy and Ron Overman as a truck driver. From 1966 to 1980 he was employed at Lisle Corp. He was united in marriage with Kathleen Susan Belding, June 24, 1957. At that time he became the stepfather to Carolyn and Donnie Dresser. To this union were born Georgene and George A. Bruce, Jr. George was a member and had been baptized in the Assembly of God Church, Red Oak. His survivors are his wife Kathleen, his stepchildren Carolyn Olson and husband Bernard, Lincoln, Ne., and Connie [Donnie] Dresser and wife Nelda of Vacaville, Ca.; his children Georgene Rasmussen and husband Jon of Tulsa, Ok., and George A. Bruce, Jr. and wife Carrie of Villisca; four grandchildren, Michael Olson and wife Marsha and Brian, Lincoln, George Arthur Bruce of Villisca, James Wesley Rasmussen of Tulsa; his mother Katherine of Red Oak; four brothers, James of Elliott, Eddie of California, Raymond of Indiana, and Lawrence of Missouri; nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by a step granddaughter Donnel Marie Dresser; his father; one brother Michael; three sisters, Margaret, Kathryn and Marie. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, 1988, at the Sutphen-Beaty Funeral Home in Villisca, Ia. Officiating was the Reverend Donald Jonker. Casket bearers were Joe Kernen, Paul Lehman, Duane Belding, Marvin Baldwin, Kenneth Baldwin, and Paul Duane Lehman. Flower bearers were Barb King and Cheryl Dicks with Frances Gray as organist. Interment was in Maple Grove, Guss, Ia.
[BURRIGHT, BERTHA MAE LONG] The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 7:30-9:00 p.m., Friday evening. Mrs. Burright died Wednesday morning at Methodist Hospital in Omaha following an illness of a year and a half. She was born July 19, 1915, near New Market, the daughter of Perry and Bertha Clark Long. In 1936 she was married to Donald Burright who survives. Mrs. Burright had been a secretary at the Clarinda High School since 1960. Prior to that she had taught school. Besides her husband of the home she is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Alan (Ruth) Poulin, Atlantic, Iowa, Mrs. Lewis (Eleanor) Bargeron, Diamond Bar, Calif., Mrs. Willis (Martha) Alexander, Colorado Springs, Colo. Mrs. Dave (Sharon) Williams, Hannibal, Mo., and Mrs. Doyle (Rosalie) Nally, Boise, Idaho. There are 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Brothers and wives are Clyde and Maybelle Long and Lee and Bernice Long of Clarinda. Grace Long of Lenox is a sister and Hope Long of Council Bluffs is a sister in law. Burial will be in Guss cemetery.
[BURRIGHT, DONALD MILTON] The son of Solomon and Katharine Folk Burright, he was born May 19, 1914 on a farm in Taylor County, Ia. He graduated from Gravity, Iowa High School in 1933 and from Wichita Business College in Wichita, Ks, in 1936 with a Bachelor's Degree in accounting. On Mar. 21, 1936 he was married to Mae Long of New Market, Ia. To this union five daughters were born. His wife, Mae, died in 1978. He later married Gladys Lock Johnson of Clarinda, Ia. Mr Burright farmed in Taylor County, Ia, many years and later tuned pianos in S.W Ia. He is survived by his wife Gladys of the home in Clarinda, Ia: five daughters Ruth Haig and Eleanor Bargeron of Lake Matthews, Ca; Martha Holcomb, Midland, Tx; Sharon Williams, Hannibal, Mo; and Rosalie Nally, Mesa, Az, and an adopted daughter, Jennifer Burright, Red Oak, Ia; 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Allen Burright, Kansas City, Ks, and Wayne Burright, Omaha, Ne; 3 sisters, Fern Burright, Omaha, Ne, Helen Bashaw, Orofino, Id, and Dorothy, Bashaw, Orofino, Id; one aunt, Lena Folk, Wichita, Ks, and 10 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Mae, a sister, Margaret Burright and a niece, Linda Burright. The funeral service was at 10 am, Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1987 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda, Ia., with burial in Maple Grove Cemetery at Guss, Ia.
[BURRIGHT, MARGARET] She grew up in the Guss vicinity and attended country school and Gravity High School. She moved to the Oak Hill vicinity with her family and was a member of the Maple Grove Church at Guss, transferring to the Oak Hill church where she was pianist for many years and taught a Sunday school class. After their father's death, her mother and she moved to Shenandoah to make their home with her sister, Fern Burright who was employed at Henry Field Seed Co. She helped care for her mother and worked at the Field Seed Company. She has been failing since surgery last fall and spent the last four weeks in the hospital. Preceded in death by her parents, she was survived by three brothers Allen, Donald and Wayne, three sisters, Fern Burright, Hellen Brashaw and Dorothy Brashaw and their families.
[BURRIGHT, WILMA FERN] She grew up in the Guss vicinity and attended country school and Gravity High School. She then attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa for two years. Fern taught country schools a number of years. She moved with her family to the Oak Hill vicinity in 1939. About 1944 she moved to Shenandoah, Iowa where she was employed as payroll clerk for Henry Field Seed Company until her retirement. She moved to Omaha, Neb. about 1981, where she lived the remainder of her life. Fern became a member of the Maple Grove Methodist Church at Guss, Iowa as a young girl, transferring later to Oak Hill Church and then to the Methodist Church in Shenandoah. She was a member of Northwest Hills United Methodist Church of Christ in Omaha at the time of her death. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Allen and Donald, and one sister Margaret. Surviving are one brother, Wayne of Omaha and two sisters, Helen Bashaw and Dorothy Bashaw of Orofino, Idaho, and many other relatives.

Burial will be in the Guss Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Thomas Harris, Kenneth Bloom, Clark Cavner, Wilbur Fudge, Stanley Ridnour and Lester Greenwood. Mr. Crowell is survived by his wife, the former Eva Firkins and a daughter Mrs Eldon (Violet) Stewart of Hopkins, Mo.
[CROWELL, MERLE HARRISON] He attended school at the Mount Pleasant School south of Brooks Ia and was a member of the first eighth grade graduating class of Taylor County He was baptized in early manhood and was a member of the Methodist Church of Guss Ia where he was Sunday school teacher of the adult class for many years. He had not been able to attend in recent years due to poor health. He was united in marriage to Eva Mae Crowell Feb 28 1912, near Nodaway Ia and would have been married 55 years this February. To this union one child was born Mrs Eldon (Violet) Stewart of Hopkins, Mo. Besides his wife Eva and daughter Violet, he is survived by a son-in-law, Eldon Stewart, and two grandchildren, Linda and Roger Stewart. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Clyde who died in childhood, Ed and Harry and two sisters Eva Crowell Myers and Verna Crowell Schrodt. Most of his life was spent farming near Guss, New Market and Shambaugh, Ia where he was living at the time of his passing. He was a devoted husband and father and will be greatly missed.
[CURTIS, JAMES CHARLES] Mr Curtis, the son of Scott and Elizabeth Strugeon [Sturgeon] Curtis, was born Dec 16, 1911 at Guss, where he spent most of his life. He was united with the Methodist Church at Ivyville at a very early age. He was united in marriage to Marie Spillman on Oct 20, 1934 at Shenandoah. To this union five children were born. He is survived by his wife Marie; two sons, Jim and Brian of Corning: three daughters, Mrs Dudley (Shirley) Hartsfield and Mrs Kenneth (Dianne) Meeks of Tucumcari. N M. and Mrs Jerry (Luanne) Loghry of Prescott; 11 grandchildren, one brother Earl of Tucumcari; and one sister Hope Long of Council Bluffs; many nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother John of Clarinda; and an infant sister. His life and hobby was his family and farming. Services were Monday, May 12, 1975 at 10:30 am at Roland Funeral Home, with Joe Cook officiating. Music was by Donna Peckham and interment was at the Guss Cemetery. Casket bearers were Ed Naven, Lyle Steeve, Paul Mitchell, Alvin Mitchell, Wilbur Johnson and Kenneth Fudge. Honorary bearers were Harold Moore, Bob Boggess, Ralph Harvey, Dale Stroud, Clarence Naven and Wilber Fudge. Flower bearers were Marge Naven and Lucille Johnson.

[DRESSER, DONNEL MARIE] The Reverend Arthur Nagel officiated at the service. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs George Bruce of Villisca and Reverend and Mrs Arthur Nagel of Shenandoah. Sutphen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
[FIDLER, CHARLES BLUFORD, JR.] Charles was united in marriage to Julia Suthers on August 17, 1952, and to this union were born one son, Clark Fidler of Laramie, Wyoming, and two; daughters, Colleen Schilling, and Connie Marie Fidler both of Lyons, Colorado. In addition to his son and two daughters he is survived by his father, Charles B Fidler, two sisters, Ida Auxier of Dawson, Nebraska, and Cleo Branan of Marshalltown, Iowa, a brother, Jird Fidler, Chula Vista, California and one grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife, his mother, Mrs Charles Fidler and a brother, John Joseph Fidler. Charles Jr lived in the Villisca area until he entered the United States Army. He served his country from Nov 14, 1944 to August 17, 1946. He was mechanically inclined and became a mechanic and welder following his discharge from the services until he was disabled following a serious accident. Charles loved to hunt and fish. His family and friends will miss him.
[FIDLER, JIRD MALVIN] Jird Malvin Fidler was born in Taylor County, Iowa, on April 13, 1932, the son of Charlie Bluford and Permelia (Mauderly) Fidler. During his early childhood he lived in Iowa, Colorado and Nebraska. His family returned to Villisca where he completed high school in 1952. Jird joined the U.S. Navy as a Seaman Recruit after graduation, and went to live in San Diego, California. He married Shirley Guss there in the Navy Chapel, at the Naval Air Station, North Island, on October 28, 1954. Four beloved daughters were born to this union. Whenever he was teased about having all girls, Jird was fond of saying "If the Lord thought I needed another man in the house, he'd have sent us one." During his early service years in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jird received official recognition for designing specialized camera pods and nuclear protection shields for pilots in Special Weapons Aircraft. While serving with the Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron 2, aboard the U.S.S. Hornet, Jird invented seven different modifications on Sikorky Helicopters. These inventions were patented by the Navy and have been implemented on all SH-3A helicopters. During the course of his naval career, Jird advanced to the rank of Chief Warrant officer II and made four cruises on various aircraft carriers to the Far East, Korea and North Vietnam. Naval retirement came in 1973 after 20 years of active duty. During his last year of naval service he was approached by the United States Treasury Department, Bureau of Customs to lead the maintenance division of the Narcotics Air Interdiction Unit. He was in charge of procuring all their aircraft and the implementation of maintenance sites along the Mexican border. Jird was very proud of being on the front lines of our nation's War on Drugs for 10 years. Jird and his wife, Shirley, returned to their hometown of Villisca in 1984, where he owned and operated Fidler's Small Engine Clinic for the next 15 years. In 2000, Jird finally retired permanently, enjoying the free time to go fishing, travel and spend time with family and close friends. Jird was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Junior and Joe Fidler, sisters; Deo Marie and Cleo. Jird is survived by his wife Shirley and their four daughters: Cheryl and special companion, Ronald Classen; Pamela Cass, Trina Johnson and husband Tracy and Janeen Hall and husband Vernon, all of Villisca, IA. Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Kristine Benton, of Cleveland, OH; Abigail Cass, of Richlands, VA; Benjamin Jird Cass, of Warrenton, VA; Sonja Govig and husband Travis, of Clarinda, IA; Katie Wagaman and husband Kaleb, of Red Oak, IA; Nichole Wesbrook and husband George, of Villisca; Jesse O'Briant and wife Crystal, of Villisca, IA; Jeremiah Burton, of Maryville, MO; and Kirstin Hall, of Villisca, IA. Five great grandchildren; Annie, Drake, Dakota Jird, Maxamas and Piper. He is also survived by one sister Ida Auxier, of Auburn, NE; an Uncle Kenneth Fidler and wife Annabell, of Villisca, IA; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
[GANLEY, HARRY EDWARD "PETE"] Visitation will be at the funeral home this Thursday evening from 7-8:30. Mr. Ganley died Monday evening after being stricken while helping load horses near Yorktown. He was born Feb. 22, 1923, at West Plains, Mo, the son of Lewis and Lena Jones Ganley. On Feb. 22, 1959 he was married to Gerry Weseen who survives. He had operated a gasoline transport for Nease Oil Co. at Red Oak for several years and later has farmed in the Guss area. Besides his wife of the home he is survived by five children Mrs. Ed (Linda Sue) Anderson of Buffalo, Wy, Laura Lee Skidmore of Guss, Paul Edward Ganley of Villisca, David Wayne Ganley of New Market, and Scott Arnold Ganley of the home. David Clayton of Red Oak is a step-son There are two grandchildren. Brothers are John Ganley of West Plains, Mo. and James Ganley of Menan, Ks. Sisters are Beulah Fern Jahnke, of Ft. Atkinson, Wi, Mary Lou Millard, Naomi Ruth McQuade, Rachel Leah Hedden, and Laura Elizabeth Lueck all of Jamesville, WI. Mr Ganley was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Elora. Burial will be in the Maple Grove cemetery at Guss.
[GUSS, EULA IRENE MORITZ] Eula Irene Guss, a lifelong resident of the Villisca area, died September 25, 2004, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, IA, following a short illness. She was born in Montgomery County on February 2, 1909, to Frank and Cora (Whan) Moritz. She attended Villisca High School, graduating with the Class of 1927. Following graduation from teachers college, she taught at the Hazel Dell country school. On October 5, 1930, Eula was married to Glenn Guss at Atlantic, IA, in the Methodist Church parsonage. Nine children were born to this union. Eula raised the children in the early years of her marriage while they farmed in the Guss, Villisca and Nodaway area. The family moved to Villisca in 1952 where they owned the Guss Restaurant for several years and in 1972 she retired from the Mental Health Institute of Clarinda, IA, where she worked as a nurse aide. Eula was a member of the Methodist Church. Eula was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glenn on April 20, 1984; sister, Velma Edwards; brother, Orval Moritz; sister-in-law, Mary Moritz; grandson, Mark Echternach; great grandson, Eric Guss; daughter-in-law, Jan Guss and sons-in-law, Bill Moates, Tom Ingersoll and Keth Echternach. She is survived by her children: Ronald Guss and wife Johan of New Market, VA; Merwin Guss and wife Wanda of Winter Haven, FL; Roma Ingersoll of Villisca, IA; Shirley Fidler and husband Jird of Villisca, IA; Janet Echternach of Council Bluffs, IA; Wayne Guss and wife Wendy of Sandy, UT; Sandra Kinser and husband Gail of Villisca, IA; June Balog of Villisca, IA; and Joan Perdue of Villisca, IA; 28 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; 21 great, great grandchildren; and a brother, Elvin Moritz and wife Ruth of Red Oak, IA. [GOULD, ADA MAY YOUNG] Mrs Gould was born April 17, 1892, at Nevada, the daughter of William Henry and Katherine Studer Young. She was married to Roy Gould Feb 19, 1919 at Savannah, Mo. They had lived n the Guss area before moving into New Market. Mrs Gould is survived by her husband, Roy, living at Colonial Manor and two children, Mrs Max (Dorene) Gray of New Market, and Russell Gould of Kansas City, Mo. There are three grandchildren. Frank H Young of Kirkland, Wash, is a brother and Mrs Ruth Bownes of Elwood, Kans, is a sister. Funeral services for Mrs Gould were held Wednesday afternoon at Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda with Rev H Francis Hubbel officiating. Miss Aletha Hutchings was organist. Casket bearers were Chick Brown, Junior Drennen, George Slaight, Harvey Young, Gary Lininger and Charles Wilson. Burial was in the Guss Cemetery.
[GOULD, ROY WALTER] He was born May 13, 1886 at Julesburg, Colo, the son of Taylor and Elizabeth Gould. His wife Ada Gould died Jan 10 this year. They had farmed in the Guss community and moved into New Market to retire in 1962. He is survived by a son and a daughter, Russell Gould of Kansas City and Mrs Max (Dorene) Gray of New Market and three grandchildren. One brother is William R Gould of North Platte, Neb. Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home with Carl Cummings of Bedford officiating. Miss Aletha Hutchings will be organist. Casket bearers will be Albert Radke, Chick Brown, Junior Drennen, George Slaight, Charles Wilson and Harvey Young. Burial will be in the Guss Cemetery.
[HAIG, RUTH EVELYN BURRIGHT FINNELL POULIN] Ruth Evelyn Burright was born the daughter of Donald M. and Bertha Mae (Long) Burright in Wichita, Kansas on June 23, 1937. In her youth, she attended Gravity school and graduated with the Gravity High School Class of 1955. Ruth married Kenneth Leroy Finnell and to their union, three children were born. In 1967, Ruth married Alan Poulin in Atlantic. One child was born to this union. During this time, she was employed first with Beaudine Lampshade Factory and later as City Clerk of Atlantic. Later, Ruth and Lloyd Haig were united in marriage. The couple moved to California where they lived for a number of years. Ruth returned to the mid-west, where she worked as an office manager at Youth Emergency Services in Omaha, Nebraska until she retired in 2004 following 15 years of service. Ruth enjoyed her gardening, crocheting afghans for the children and grandchildren, as well as raising her grandchildren when needs arose. She especially adored her dogs, Petri and Peppy. She was a honorary lifetime member of the Board of Youth Emergency Services of Omaha, NE. Ruth will be remembered by her family and friends as being patient, caring, very personable, and for having a good sense of humor. She is survived by her sons: Ken Finnell (Patty Parish) of Omaha, NE, Joe Finnell (Wendy) of Atlantic, Don Finnell (Luann) of Atlantic; sisters: Eleanor Bargeron (Bob Jackson) of Garden Grove, CA, Martha (Darvin) Holcomb of Sherman, IL, Sharon Williams of Hannibal, MO, and Rosalie (Doyle) Nally of Meridian, ID; six grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren; aunts and uncles, including Wayne and Helen Mae Burright of Omaha, NE: as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Paula Renee (Cooper) Raven; and her grandson Chadleon David Cooper. Her funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 31 at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Following, there will be a committal service at Gus Cemetery northeast of Clarinda Iowa. Chaplain Tom Williamson of Ascera Care Hospice in Council Bluffs will officiate. There will be open visitation daily from 8:00 to 5:30 until family will meet with friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
[HELLER, ALLIE VAN PELT] Mrs. Heller was the former Allie Van Pelt She was born Nov 29, 1888, in Page county, Iowa. She was reared in that county and was married in 1910 at Quitman to James Douglas Heller They have lived in the Burlington Junction vicinity with the exception of five years near New Market, Ia. Mrs Heller was a member of the Christian church at New Market and of the W. N. club of Burlington Junction. Besides her husband, she is survived by four daughters Mrs Charlotte Royer, Hepburn, Ia.; Mrs. Myrtle Pearson, Burlington Junction, Mrs Winifred Cromwell, Hemet, Calif. and Miss Ruth Heller, Portland, Ore; two sons, Merrill Heller, Burlington Junction, and Byron Heller, Clarinda, Ia.; two brothers, Ed Van Pelt, Burlington Junction, and Frank Van Pelt, Faulkton, S. D; three sisters, Mrs. Charles Jones, Burlington Junction; Mrs John Knisley, Farnhamvllle, Ia., and Mrs. Roy Seely, Scappoose, Ore.; an uncle, Weir Cooper, Bolckow, and five grandchildren.
[HELLER, JAMES DOUGLAS] He was born May 2,1891, in Red Oak, Iowa, and had lived most of his life in Burlington Jct. Heller was a retired farmer. Survivors include: one son, Merrill Heller, Quitman; four daughters, Mrs. Earl Pierson, Maryville, Mrs. Trubee Jackson, St. Joseph, Mrs. Earl Royer, Clarinda, Iowa, and Mrs. Winifred Downing, Grandview; three sisters, Mrs. Grace Annan, Riverton, Wyo., Mrs. Mary Hutchison, Coin, Iowa, and Mrs. Rose Maltsbarger, Cameron; one brother, Fred Heller, Riverton; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. One son, Byron Heller, preceded him in death. The body is at the Barr-Merrick Funeral Home, Burlington Jct., where funeral arrangements are pending.
[HELLER, JAMES DOUGLAS] Mrs. Alvin Reed, organist, played "Trust and Obey," "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lord is My Shepherd, I'll Not Want." Pallbearers were Melvin Royer, Dean Pierson, Ronnie Heller, Dennis Pierson, Gene Heller, R. D. Jackson and Jerry Heller. Mrs. Woodrow Carpenter was in charge of the register.
[JOHNSON, DELLA MAY WOOD] Earl and Della lived and worked on a farm for ten years and then moved to Stanton. Della worked for the Stanton Viking and Villisca Review as a reporter. She later took a librarian position in Stanton where she worked more than 20 years until her retirement. Della passed away at the age of 68 on Oct. 22 at her residence in Stanton with her family lovingly caring for her. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Lee Don Wood, brothers-in-law: Calvin Johnson and his wives Judith and Nancy, Dale Gray and Donovan Stamm. Surviving Della are her husband of 47 years, Earl; children: Cletis Dean Johnson and wife Sally of Red Oak, Charmla Kay Carpenter and husband Scott of Stanton and Wesley Albert Johnson and wife Julie of Omaha; seven grandchildren: Tristin Johnson and Tanner Johnson both of Red Oak, Mykel Thoren of Atlantic, Bryton Thoren and Preston Carpenter both of Stanton, Alexis Johnson and Rylee Johnson both of Omaha; sister Wanda Irene Woods and husband Charles Shetterly of Red Oak; sisters-in-law: Doris Stamm and Inez Gray both of Clarinda; brother-in-law Gail Lee Johnson and wife Laura of Gravity; along with many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Memorial graveside service for Della was held Friday Oct. 25 at Maple Grove Cemetery in Guss. Memorials are suggested to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Montgomery County Relay for Life, Heartland Hospice, or Maple Grove United Methodist Church. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel of Clarinda is in charge of arrangements.
[KENDRICK, VIOLA ELIZABETH] At the age of 24 she came to work for her Aunt and Uncle, Mr and Mrs. Joe Mauderly. After two years the mother of the family passed away. Viola then took charge of the home, caring for the children. Since the father passed away about 7 years ago, she has been keeping house for Glen, the only one of the children left at home. She leaves to mourn her loss three sisters; Mrs Lena King, of near Villisca, Iowa, Mrs Caroline King, of near Brooks, Iowa, and Mrs May Friedrick, of near Snohomish, Washington. [KRUIDENIER, GLENNA LIGGITT COMBS] The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 7-8 pm this Thursday evening. Mrs. Glenna Combs Kruidenier died Monday night at Goldenrod Manor Nursing Home following a long illness. She had been a resident of Goldenrod since its opening and prior to that had been in a rest home at Shenandoah. Her last Clarinda residence had been at Clar-Haven. She was born Sept. 12, 1886 at New Market, the daughter of Mr. arid Mrs. John D. Liggitt. She was married to Lloyd Combs who preceded her in death and later to Elmer E. Kruidenier who also preceded her. She is survived by one son, Harold Combs of Clarinda, one grandchild and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, one son Merrill and one daughter Verla. Burial will be in Guss cemetery.

Pallbearers included Ed and John Northup, Albert Sandstrom, Ron Travis, Bob Brown and Martin Moore. Mr Long was survived by two daughters, Mrs Byron Northup of Lenox and Mrs Loden Brown of Orlando, Fla, 2 brothers and 2 sisters, 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther, one brother, Bill, his daughter and son-in-law Frances and LaVerne Moore and one granddaughter Joan McCutcheon. [MCFARLING, RAY] On February 24, 1915, he was married to Minnie Gail Pierce, in Red Oak, Iowa. To this union one daughter was born: Lloris (Mrs. Gerald) James of Corning, Iowa. He was a farmer in Taylor and Adams counties all his life. He had been in failing health the past few years and passed away at Rosary Hospital on February 20, 1975, at the age of 85 years, 3 months, 2 days. He was preceded in death by his sister, Gertie Freuck, and by his parents. He is survived by his wife, his daughter, son-in-law, Gerald; grandson Terry L. James, granddaughter, Joanna James Worthington and her husband Larry, granddaughters, Jennifer and Joyce James; by a brother-in-law Eldon Pierce of Moberly, Mo, who as a young man lived in the McFarling home for several years, by sister-in-law Opal (Mrs. Eldon) Pierce of Moberly, Mo; by sister-in-law Grace Beck of Irving, Texas, and by 11 nieces and nephews.
[MCKINLEY, EVA AMANDA LAWSON BRIGGS] She was born in Page County, Iowa, on Nov. 23, 1882, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lawson of New Market. She was married to J. [ames] H.[enry] McKinley in Bedford in November 1907 and to them five children were born, one of whom is deceased. Those living are Clark, Wayne, Dale and Clifton, all at home. She is the mother of two children by a former marriage, one of whom, Minnie Briggs, is deceased. Ivan Briggs of Winterset, Iowa, survives. Besides her husband and children she leaves also her parents, two sisters, Mrs. Ralph Fulton of south of Villisca and Mrs. Lula Johnson of New Market, and one brother, Bryan Lawson of New Market. Mrs. McKinley's body was taken to the A. B. Wolfe funeral home to await the funeral, which will be held there this Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Interment will be in the New Market cemetery.

Obituary – James Henry McKinley, son of James Henry and Nancy Ann Misher [Mishler] McKinley, was born December 9, 1884 in Taylor County, Iowa and passed away at the Shady Lawn Rest Home in Villisca on June 10, 1969, at the age of 84 years. He was united in marriage to Eva Lawson in 1908 [1907] at New Market, Iowa and to this union were born five sons: Burnell who passed away in 1924, Clark, George, Dale and Merl, all of Villisca, Iowa. Mr. McKinley was a retired coal miner who had worked in Adams and Taylor Counties and lived most of his life in the New Market and Villisca, Iowa areas. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, and his wife who passed away in 1928. He also was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers. He is survived by four sons and their wives, by twelve grandchildren, by five great grandchildren and by two sisters: Mrs Maggie Carmichael of Clarinda, Iowa and Mrs Faye Brooks who is living in California. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his family and those who loved him.
[MAUDERLY, ABBY AMANDA BELDING] Abby Amanda Mauderly, daughter of John and Mamie Meads Belding, was born May 10, 1916, in Atchison County, Mo., and passed away June 15, 1989, at the Stanton Care Center where she had been a resident since July, 1988. Abby was married to Glee C. [hester] Mauderly on October 5, 1932, at Maryville, Mo. They lived on a farm near Guss before moving to a farm near Grant. She is survived by three children, Delbert Mauderly of Villisca, Mrs Wes (Naomi) Wimmer of Red Oak, and Mrs Claude (Dorothy) Smith of Nevada; one niece, Leora Riggs of Independence, Mo.; seven granddaughters, Connie, Abby, Carta, Cindy, Lori, Brenda and Coral; four grandsons, Randy, Wesley, Claude and Cody; 19 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Erma Cady of California and Florence Hankins of Oregon

In addition to his wife and children he is survived by a sister, Martha Kendrick of New Market, Iowa; eleven grandchildren, and his other relatives and many friends.
[MITCHELL, JERAMIE GALYN] Pallbearers were Neal Brown, Mike Peters, Greg Andrews, Dennis Redel, Leland Anderson, Don Kenworthy, Steve Sivadge and Fred Shearer. Honorary pallbearers were his uncles and his eighth grade classmates from Corning Junior High School. Organist was Kathleen Cook, and vocalist was Marcia Allen. Jeramie, son of Galyn and Shari (Walters) Mitchell, was born Apr. 4, 1980, at the Clarinda Hospital, Clarinda, IA. He attended Villisca elementary for his first two years of school. In 1987, the family moved to rural Corning, and he was enrolled in the Corning Elementary and Junior High Schools. Jeramie was baptized in and was a member of the Maple Grove United Methodist Church of Guss. Jeramie was active in the United Methodist Church in Corning. He belonged to the Happy-Go-Lucky-Gang 4-H Club, the Corning Gun Club, and the junior high school band and chorus, which he really enjoyed. He also participated in football, basketball, baseball, track and wrestling. His biggest smile was when he won first place trophies at wrestling tournaments. Jeramie was also a paper carrier for the Creston News Advertiser. Whenever he had idle time, he spent it hunting or drawing or drafting as he was looking forward to this as a career. Weekend activities always included hunting, playing ball and working on the farm. Preceding Jeramie in death was his maternal great grandmother, Mable Wilhelm. Jeramie's ornery personality and bright smile will be remembered and missed by both family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son; two sisters. Funeral services were held Monday, May 28 at 2:30 p. m. from the Roland Funeral Home in Corning with Rev. [ROGERS, WILLIAM CHAPPELL] On March 12, 1901 [1902] he was united in marriage with Susie Duer. To this union three children were born. One infant son preceded him in death and he is survived by two children, Mrs. Ruth L. Warnock of Carl and Marjorie S. at home. Besides his wife and two children he is survived by four brothers and two sisters. The brothers are Edward P. of Guss, George S. of Chamberlin, S. D., Francis J. of Clarinda, Iowa and Clarence E. of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The two sisters are Mrs. Ida Johnston of Burlington, Kansas and Mrs. Ella Hawley of Lead, S. D. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers and five sisters. He is also survived by three grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Mr. Rogers was a farmer most of his lifetime and the largest share of this time was lived in Taylor and Adams Counties. Being devoted to his home he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The pallbearers for this service were all nephews of Mr. Rogers. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 4, 1951 in the Boyd Roland Company Funeral home in Corning, at 2 o'clock. Music was furnished by Mrs. Blanche Lund, accompanied at the piano by Miss Vida Jackson. Pall bearers were Wilbur Hess, Melvin Firkins, Paul Firkins, Leslie Hess, Dean Firkins and Boyd Firkins. [SMITH, ANNEL ANN PELMULDER] On June 16,1972 she was united in marriage with Dean Smith at Omaha, Nebraska. Annel graduated from Corning High School with the class of 1966. After graduation, her love of people led her to work at Colonial Manor Nursing Home and later at a nursing home in Villisca Annel's radiant smile, despite her long illness, was an inspiration to everyone she met. Her compassion for the patients at the nursing home and her deep feelings for retarded children showed the type of person she really was. Preceding her in death were her grandmother, Mrs Frances McNuelty; grandmother, Mrs Truman Ridge; and grandfather, Charles Pelmulder.

Laverna, daughter of John Wesley and Lydia Cathryn (Henson) Gibson was born Nov. 14, 1917, in Harrison County, MO. She attended Missouri country schools. On Jan. 16, 1937, Laverna married Leroy Smith at Glenwood, IA. A daughter Joyce Ann died in infancy. The Smiths moved to the Hawleyville area in 1939 and worked on a farm. They then began farming on their own and farmed most of their lives. In 1976 Laverna began working for the Good Samaritan Center in Villisca, and they moved into Villisca a year later. She has lived in and around Villisca most of her life. She was a member of the Church of Christ in New Market, IA. She was an avid fisherman and gardener. She was a very caring person, loved being with her family and friends and always had pets. She loved to embroider and read. She was seldom idle. In August 1992 she moved to the Bethesda Care Center, Clarinda. She was preceded in death by husband; daughter; sister Jean Julian; and brothers Carol Dean and Larry Leroy. Survivors include brother Harold and wife Ramona Gibson of New Market, IA; sister-in-law, Leola Trower of Mt. Ayr, IA; several nieces and nephews. James Alfred Roshto Sr., the son of Richard Alexander and Catherine Elmer (Galloway) Roshto, was born on May 20, 1937, in Baton Rouge, La. James served in the United States Marine Corps. He entered the service at Baton Rouge, La., and was stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. James was discharged just prior to the beginning of the Korean Conflict. On December 24, 1955, James married Joyce Marie Hazel in Woodville, Miss. Jimmy drove a semi truck most of his life. He drove for several different companies from coast to coast and has lived in many different places over the years. The last company he drove for was the Hahn Company, based in Oklahoma City, Okla. He retired in 1995, due to medical reasons. Jimmy moved to Iowa from Arkansas and lived in Nodaway, Iowa, for 10 years. He has lived in Osceola the past two years. In retirement, James enjoyed working with his hands and loved woodworking. He was a member of the Osceola Full Gospel Church. James' family was very important to him. She worked outside the home gathering eggs in a chicken house in Mena, Arkansas. Joyce and Jimmy lived in many different places over the years. They moved from Arkansas to Nodaway where they lived for 10 years. They lived in Osceola for about two years, and Joyce has lived in Corning the past three months. Joyce was affiliated with Osceola Full Gospel Church. Joyce is survived by her children, Eva (Maurice) Austin of Osceola, Liz Brassfield of Bono, Arkansas, Garie Holland of Osceola, James (Heather) Roshto, Jr. of Villisca, Deanne (Jeff) Stacy of Huntsville, Arkansas, David (Amber) Roshto of Jonesboro, Arkansas, Maurice (Kim) Roshto of Wesley, Arkansas, Joe (Jennifer) Roshto of Bono, Arkansas, and Brandon (Brittney) Roshto of New Albany, Mississippi; several grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; brother Gene (Mary) Hazel of Newellton, Louisiana; sister Frances Tapley of Natchez, Mississippi; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. [STEEVE, LYLE PAUL] He was one of nine children born to this family. Lyle attended Immanuel Lutheran School and Clarinda High School where he was active in sports, especially football, track and field. He graduated with the class of 1952. Lyle entered the United States Army on April 15, 1953 and was stationed in Germany following World War II. He served his country honorably and was discharged on April 1, 1955. Lyle was united in marriage to Patsy Ann Curtis on April 26, 1957, in Clarinda, Iowa. Five children were born to bless this union: Andrea, Julie, Perry, Marla, and Daniel. Lyle and Patsy would raise their children on a busy farm in Adams County. Lyle was a farmer who practiced good conservation methods on his land. He helped his father-in-law move houses. He also built terraces, ponds, and tiled much land in several other counties. Lyle enjoyed raising hogs and he had a love for his cattle. He also raised sheep for 4-H when the kids were young. Most important to Lyle was his family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and playing cards with them. He also loved flying kites with family and friends, and would later enjoy these past times with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lyle and Patsy moved to their home in Creston in 2009. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. Left to cherish Lyle's memory is his loving wife Patsy of Creston, Iowa; daughters: Andrea Grau, Corning, Iowa; Julie (Greg) Crill, Creston, Iowa; Marla (Rick) Sheley, Bedford, Iowa; son: Daniel (Brenda) Steeve, Corning, Iowa; daughter-in-law: Holly Steeve, Corning, Iowa; sisters-in-law: Linda Steeve, Des Moines, Iowa; Dora Steeve, Clarinda, Iowa; brother-in-law: James Woldruff, Clarinda, Iowa; 19 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; nieces; nephews and many friends. [THOMAS, ELIZABETH JANE DAVIS] The remains of Mrs. Thomas were brot here from Cody, Wyo. She was aged 88 years, 10 months and 8 days. Mrs. Thomas and her husband immigrated from Ohio to a farm two miles south of Hawleyville in 1848. She is survived by six children. Interment was at Guss.
[THOMAS, ELIZABETH JANE DAVIS] It was back in 1848 that her husband S. [ylvester] S. [hepard] Thomas, came to Iowa, settling near Hawleyville, where the Civil War found them and Mr. Thomas enlisted serving three years in the U. S. Army, while the wife and three babies staid at home. Later nine more children came to bless the home, making an even dozen, of whom six are still living, five being resident in the west, the mother being nearly 89 years of age at time of passing away. [THOMAS, ELIZABETH JANE DAVIS] Mrs. Thomas was a pioneer resident of Page County, having settled near Hawleyville. She was born in Missouri and was 88 years old at her death. Her funeral was held at the Hicks home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and was in charge of Rev. Osborn of New Market. Interment was in the Guss cemetery.

Loran Lewis Wiley, son of James Benjamin and Ida E. Manion Wiley, was born March 24,1899, in Conception, Mo., and passed away Tuesday, December 2, 1986, at the Community Hospital in San Bernardino, Ca., at the age of 87 years, 8 months, and 8 days. Loran came to Page County, Iowa, with his parents at the age of 4. He attended Page County schools. On February 1, 1922, he was united in marriage to Beulah E. Diggs at Clarinda. Six children were born to this union: Harold, Robert, Donald, Shirley, Clifford, and Kathryn. Beulah and Loran farmed in Taylor County for a short time before going into the grocery business with his parents. They later farmed in Page, Taylor and Adams counties, before moving to Texas in 1943 where Loran worked in construction. In 1953, they moved to Rialto, Ca., and lived there until 1973 when they came back to Iowa and settled on a farm north of Gravity. They still maintain their home in California where they were at the time of his death. Loran is survived by his wife, Beulah; four sons, Harold and wife, Ruby, Robert and wife, Lela, Donald and wife, Elizabeth, all of Basehor, Ks., and Clifford and wife, Patty of Rosburg, Wa.; two daughters, Shirley Biel and husband Lou of Rialto, Ca., and Kathryn Webb and husband, Dick of Concord, Ca.; twenty grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and brother, Melvin Wiley. Loran was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Virgil and one sister, Lora Lee.
[WILHELM, MABEL ANN HEATHER] Mabel attended the University of Nebraska and taught school for two years. On May 23, 1938, she married Wilson Wilhelm. They farmed in Nebraska until moving to Iowa in 1939. They farmed near Hawleyville, Essex, Elliott, and in 1949, they moved to the farm southeast of Villisca, where Mabel served as 4-H leader for many years, served on several county committees, and was an honorary alumni 4-H member. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. She is survived by her husband, Wilson; her five children: Heather Nasi of Gallup, N.M.; Connie Walters of Villisca; Dr. Rex Wilhelm of Stuart, Ia.; Tom Wilhelm of St. Charles, Il.; Judy Havick of Nodaway; thirteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three sisters and two brothers. Services were held Monday, August 5, 1985, at 2:00 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Villisca with the Reverends Michael Roys and Sarah Malone officiating. Casket bearers were Robert Neal, Darrell Schrader, Louis Riley, Paul Mitchell, Joe Benedict and Fred Berggren. Flower committee was Mrs Darrell Schrader and Mrs Paul Mitchell. Musical selections were "How Great Thou Art", "Because He Lives" and "The Lord's Prayer" with Mrs Neal Gray as organist and Mrs Bruce Nelson as soloist. At the memory book were Mrs Robert Neal and Mrs Louis Riley. Ushers were James Branon [Branan] and Helmar Asklof. Interment was at Guss Cemetery with Sutphen Funeral Home in charge of services.
[WILHELM, WALTER WILSON "WIL"] Walter Wilson 'Wil' Wilhelm was born on November 10, 1916, in Otoe County, Nebraska to Walter and Effie (VanSickle) Wilhelm. He was raised in the Palmyra area and graduated from Palmyra High School. Wilson was married to the late Mabel (Heather) Wilhelm and to this marriage five children were born: Heather, Connie, Rex, Tom and Judy. Wilson and Mabel started farming in Nebraska near Palmyra in 1938, then moved in 1939 to Iowa near Hawleyville. They continued farming throughout southwest Iowa near Essex, where they managed a dairy which started many years of raising registered Milking Shorthorn Dairy Cattle, near Elliott, and then to the present farm near Guss. On February 28, 1987, Wilson married Carol Lundquist in Villisca, Iowa. Together they lived on the farm near Guss raising cattle and farming the land. Wilson was a member of many organizations such as the Guss Cemetery Board, a 4-H leader, County Extension Board Member, 40 plus years on the Taylor County Board of Review and the Villisca School Board. He was also a lifetime Taylor County Cattlemen Member and recently received the Pioneer Award. Wilson received an award for shipping to the Omaha Stockyards for 50 years in 1984. He also received several 4-H awards of recognition for serving at the local and county levels. Wilson donated part of his land to the Guss Cemetery in memory of the Wilson Wilhelm family. Wilson's hobbies included woodworking, restoring a 1948 Co-Op tractor, fishing, fox hunting and going out to the eat and socialize. Wilson is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Effie Wilhelm; wife Mabel Wilhelm; sisters Jessie Steinbronn, Aura Lucas and Maude Steinbronn; brothers Elmer Wilhelm, John George Wilhelm, Claude Wilhelm and Vernon Wilhelm; mother-in-law Ruby Newberry; father-in-law Robert Thompson, Sr.; sister-in-law Katherine Hayes; son-in-law John Nasi and great grandson Jeramie Mitchell. Remaining to cherish Wilson memories are his wife Carol Wilhelm of Villisca; children Heather Nasi of Gallup, NM, Connie Walters and husband Ronald of Guss, Iowa, Rex Wilhelm and wife Hope of Stuart, Iowa, Tom Wilhelm and wife Barbara of Dallas, Pennsylvania and Judy Havick of Lincoln, Nebraska; 18 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; step daughters Valeria Goldsmith and husband Gary of Corning, Iowa, Rhonda Wade and husband Scott of Savannah, Missouri; step son Andrew Lundquist and wife Kim of Coming, Iowa; brother in law Robert Thompson and wife Susi of Colorado and good friend Brett Stamps. Memorials are suggested to the Guss Cemetery Association. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home of Clarinda was in charge of arrangements.
Villisca Review (Villisca, Iowa), Thursday, May 30, 1991, p. 18 Lela, daughter of Frank Elmer and Alta Burton Jane Hoffman Diggs, was born August 18, 1908, west of Guss, IA, in Taylor County, and died May 18, 1991, at Mercy Hospital in Corning, IA. She was married to Ray Wirth at the home of her parents near Clarinda, IA, on November 5, 1924. The couple farmed in the Hawleyville area, before moving to the New Market, Villisca, Nodaway and Brooks communities. Prior to her death, she had resided in Corning, IA, for several years. Ray and Lela were privileged to observe their golden wedding anniversary in November 1974. Their marriage was blessed with the birth of three sons and two daughters. Lela loved flowers, and she especially enjoyed having her children and grandchildren visit her. She also enjoyed going places with her brothers and sisters. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Ray on July 26, 1980; a daughter-in-law, Mrs Gail (Barbara) Wirth; and a great-grandson, Kylee David. Survivors include her sons; Darwin and wife Darlene, Escondido, CA; Delmar and wife Marlene, Tabor, IA; and Gail of Tulsa, OK. Daughters: Ruby Walter and husband Franklin, Nodaway; and Carolyn Curry and husband Terry of Corning, IA. Sisters: Zella Wiley, Nodaway, IA; Beulah Wiley, Gravity, IA; Elma Schooling, Creston, IA; Stella Nickell and husband Horace, Gravity, IA; Dorothy La Vaughn Dugan and husband Lowell, Gravity, IA; and Elzene Diggs, Clarinda, IA. Brothers: Hildred Diggs and wife Phyllis. Bedford, IA; Harley Diggs and wife Grace, Clarinda, IA; and Francis Diggs and wife Rita, Bedford, IA. Lela also had sixteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
[WOODS, DEBORAH LYNN "DEB" BRANAN] Deborah Lynn Woods, the daughter of Kyle Val Jean and Sharon L. (Campbell) Branan was born Nov. 10, 1954, in Corning. Deb was raised in southwest Iowa, graduating from Nishna Valley High School in 1973. She married Greg Woods June 28, 1979, in Farmington, N.M. Deb and Greg then moved to an acreage west of Stanton. She worked for many years at the Rainbow Café, Na-Churs Plant Food, Traco and Red Oak Greenhouse. Deb was an avid auto racing fan, both dirt track and NASCAR, attending races at Adams County Speedway and many different tracks all over the United States. She was a true Nebraska Cornhusker fan. She enjoyed time spent with her sons and family. Deb was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Gregory Dean Branan; and father-in-law, Glendon Woods. Deb is survived by her husband, Greg Woods, rural Stanton; sons, Ryan and Chris Woods, Shenandoah; grandson, Abel; sister, Cheryl Blazek, Creston; brothers, Tim (Fran) Branan, Walnut, and Steve Branan, Omaha; mother-in-law, Awanda Woods, Red Oak; aunt, Shirley Frus, Des Moines; uncle, Butch (Dorothy) Campbell, Kansas City; special friend, Sis Jones (Jeff) Bogenreif; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. A celebration of life service was Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Walters officiating.
