[THOMAS, SYLVESTER SHEPARD]
Clarinda Herald (Clarinda, Iowa), Wednesday, June 1, 1892, p. 4
A SUDDEN CALL. —The many friends and relatives of Sylvester S. Thomas, an old citizen of this county, but lately making his home about seven miles east of Hawleyville, were astonished to learn of his sudden death. Monday, May 30th, would have been his 69th birthday anniversary, and a number of his friends met on Saturday evening at his home to celebrate with him The occasion was heartily enjoyed by all and especially by the deceased until shortly after supper when, in the midst of the pleasant surroundings, the grim visitor, Death, made his appearance and demanded the life of him in whose honor the people had assembled. After partaking of a hearty supper Mr. Thomas walked out to the front gate, and after talking with friends for a short time, returned to the house, sat down and in a moment the work of death was accomplished. The hundred or more guests were in a state of wild confusion in a moment and it was sometime before they could realize what had happened. Mr. Thomas was an early settler in this county and with his father built the first mill, a little corn cracker, on the site of what is now the Hawleyville mill. He enlisted in the 29th Iowa Infantry and was an intimate friend and companion of Lieut. Isaac Damewood. He served his time in a most honorable and creditable manner and returned to his home to finish his days in peace. He was very highly esteemed by all who knew him and was a most excellent citizen. He leaves a wife and nine children, four of whom is still at home, although the youngest is pretty well grown. It is an awful thing to be so suddenly stricken down and should serve as a warning to all to be ready when called. The entire community was profoundly stirred over this sad event, and the bereaved family has the warmest sympathy of all.

Clarinda Herald (Clarinda, Iowa), Wednesday, June 1, 1892, [p. 1]
HAWLEYVILLE – We regret to learn that Mr. S. Thomas died last Saturday very suddenly. It was his birthday and his friends gathered at the house and presented him with a new rocker and had just gone. He was a soldier and an old resident of Taylor county and has been in feeble health for some time. The gave him a soldier's burial on Monday with all due honors.
