[ALLEN, LYNN MARIE] Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, October 11, 1989 LYNN MARIE ALLEN Lynn Marie Allen as born to Richard and Pauline Wilson, on October 18,1955 at Rosary Hospital, Corning, Iowa She passed away at the age of 33 years, 11 months and 15 days. She attended elementary and high schools at Bedford Community School and one year at Creston Community College. Lynn had been married to Kenny Peterman of Conway, Iowa To this union were born Tanya Jean and Matthew Ray Peterman, now of Bedford. On August 17, 1985 she was united in marriage to Gary Allen of Gravette, Ark., at the Christian Church of Bella Vista, Ark. She attended the Presbyterian Church of Sharpsburg, Iowa, and later transferred to the Christian Church of Bella Vista, Ark. In her last few years she spent many hours praying and reading from her Bible. And in the last two years of her life she attended many rodeo events and got to be an outstanding barrel racer with her horse "Smokey". She took pride in whatever she did. Her children, family, friends and neighbors were some of her prime interests in life. Sometimes when she wanted to spend a few hours, she would go to her special friends, Elvin and Mary Lou Miller and their children Jim and Jean and Rosie. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Gary Allen of Gravette, Ark.; her children Tanya Jean and Matthew Ray Peterman of Bedford; her parents Richard and Pauline Wilson of Bella Vista, Ark.; one sister, Lila Jean Shutt of Des Moines; three brothers, Randall Wayne Wilson of Lincoln University, Pennsylvania, Robert Elton Wilson and Roger Allan Wilson of Bedford, Iowa; three - sisters-in-law whom she thought so much of: Kathy Wilson of Lincoln University, Pa; Sandy Wilson and Becky Wilson, both of Bedford; and one brother-in-law, Craig Shutt of Des Moines; her grandparents Marion and Hazel Wilson of Gravity and Paul and Gladys Chitty of Sharpsburg; her aunts and uncles Donald and Rose Marie Pfander of Corning; and Quentin and Lorene Beemer of Gravity. Paul and Joanne Chitty of Bella Vista, Ark., and Richard and Janet Chitty of San Pedro, Calif.; her great uncles and aunts, Elton and Marie Hall of Gravity; Ivan and Edythe Holmes of Sharpsburg; and Mrs. Frances Hoops of Glenwood; and her many nieces and nephews and cousins whom she loved so very much. James Hickman officiating. Burial was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Iowa. Marian Evelyn Anderson, daughter of Floyd Eggerth [Eggers] and Bertha Danner was born at Omaha, Neb. May 27, 1929 and departed this life March 8, 1989 at Mercy Hospital, Corning, Iowa at the age of 59 years, nine months, 11 days. She lived and grew to maturity in Omaha, Neb. where she attended the public school and Nazarene Church. On June 26, 1949 she was united in marriage to Raymond Anderson at Omaha, Neb. and they lived in Omaha, Neb., Glenwood, Iowa and Bedford, Iowa. Two sons were adopted to share their love, David and Tim Anderson. Marian spent most of her adult life caring for her children and home. She was preceded in death by her father and mother. Left to cherish her memory are Raymond Anderson of the home; sons David Anderson and Tim Anderson; daughter-in-law Regina Anderson; a granddaughter, Athena Anderson; a grandson, Tim Anderson; a sister Helen Buckmaster, Omaha, Neb.; and a brother, Robert Eggers, Calif. She was a member of the Nazarene Church. She was a kind and considerate mother and grandmother and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, April 13, 1988, p. 3 DARRELL DEAN BAKER Services for Darrell Dean Baker, 62, were held April 6 at Central Church of Christ in Griswold, Ia. with Don Gordon officiating. Interment was at Washington Township Cemetery, Gravity, Ia. Mr. Baker died at his home Monday, April 4, 1988. He was born November 16, 1925 at Brooks, Ia., the son of Glen and Orpha Konecne Baker. He attended country schools and graduated from Gravity High School in 1943. He served with the Marine Corps in the South Pacific during W. W. II. On September 2, 1961, he married Joan Dille at Maryville, Mo. At the age of 60, Mr. Baker retired as a rural mail carrier. Prior to that he owned and operated a service station in Gravity, Ia. He lived in Griswold for 15 years. He was a member of the Gravity Christian Church, past member of the American Legion and past member of the Gravity Fire Dept. Survivors include his wife, Joan, one son Rick Morgan and his wife, Ann from Oskaloosa, Ia., one daughter Jayne Wilson and her husband Michael from Clarinda; two grandsons Troy and Stephen Morgan; one brother Bernard of Cedar Creek, Ne., and one sister, Mrs. Loretta Nielsen of Sioux Falls, S. D. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, May 12, 1993 GLADYS BLAIR -Graveside services for Gladys Marie Blair were held Tuesday, May 4, 1993 at Washington Cemetery, Gravity with Rev. Mark Imel officiating. Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Gladys Marie Blair was the oldest child of Seneca and Alice Knapp. She was born at Litchfield, Neb. on August 4, 1901 and departed this life Sunday, May 2, 1993 at Bedford, Iowa reaching the age of 91 years, eight months, and 28 days. Gladys grew to maturity in western Nebraska where she attended the public school in the Litchfield area. On December 21 [11], 1921 she was united in marriage to Robert Blair at Corning, Iowa Together they lived in Sharpsburg where they operated a produce business for 20 years. After retiring, they traveled until entering the nursing home in 1984. To this union two children were born: Bernice Marie and Francis Wayne, who died in infancy. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, one sister, and her loving husband, Robert, who died March 5, 1992. Together they observed over 70 years of marriage. Left to cherish her memory include: one brother, Eljus of Colorado; her daughter, Bernice Lacy and husband Darwin; two grandchildren, Tana Ross and Brenda Ton; four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Gladys was a kind and considerate individual and will be missed by all who knew and loved her, especially the people of the Bedford Manor. Bedford Times-Press, Thursday, March 26, 1970, p. 2 Nellie Blair, 70, Rites Tuesday Funeral services for Mrs. Walter (Nellie) Blair, 70, lifelong resident of Taylor County were held Tues. Mar. 24 at the Gravity United Methodist Church with Rev. Darrel L. Draper officiating. Mrs. Blair died Saturday at Rosary Hospital in Corning. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity. She was born June 13, 1899 in Taylor County, southwest of Lenox, daughter of Simeon and Alice Whitecotton Beemer. She lived all her life in Taylor County. On Sept. 11, 1918, she was united in marriage to Walter Blair at Bedford. Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and three sisters, Rella Akers, Sumner, Mo., Mollie Rumbaugh, Grants Pass, Oregon and Ollie Sturm, Gravity, Iowa. She is survived by four sisters, Lottie Ross, Leon, Iowa, Minnie Triller, Grants Pass, Oregon, Sarah Foster, Sumner, Mo., and Grace Houchin, Corning, Iowa; and two brothers, Jim Beemer, Conway and John Beemer, Sumner, Mo. She was a Methodist for many years and a long time member of the WomenÕs Society of Christian Service of the Methodist Church and of the Social Hour Club. Bedford Times-Press, Thursday, September 16, 1965, p. 6 Walter Blair Rites Sept. 5 Funeral services for Walter Blair of Conway, held Sept. 5 at the east Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Rev. James Ferris. Mr. Blair died at Greater Community Hospital in Creston Sept. 3, 1965, at the age of 66 years, nine months and 10 days. Masonic graveside services were held at Washington Cemetery, Gravity. Walter Edwin Blair was born Dec. 19, 1898. He was the son of William and Amanda Blair and was born near Gravity, Iowa, having three brothers and three sisters, with one brother and one sister preceding him in death. On Sept. 11, 1918 Walter was united in marriage to Nellie Beemer of Conway. They lived on a farm around Gravity, spent two years in Missouri, and then moved to the farm south of Conway where he was living at the time of his death. He was a member of the Conway Methodist church and belonged to Right Angle Lodge No. 348 AF & AM Conway. He was a past master of the lodge. He is survived by his wife, Nellie; two sisters, Maude Welch of Lenox, Opal Schilt of Wathena, Kansas; two brothers, Wilber and Robert Blair of Sharpsburg; many nieces and nephews and many, many friends. Clarinda Herald Journal, Monday, February 23, 1970 Elzie L Blake, 79, of Clarinda died Thursday afternoon at a Creston rest home where he had been a patient for a month. He was born Feb 4, 1891 at De Witt, Neb. Blake had been a farmer and in later years had worked as an orderly at MHI. He married Ruby Mothershead at Hopkins, Mo in 1920. He is survived by his wife of the home, one son Arthur of Molalla, Ore; two daughters, Mrs Harold (Lucille) Warrick of Coos Bay, Ore, and Mrs Quentin (Virginia) King of Centerville. There are eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. One brother, Will of Bedford, three sisters, Mrs Rosa Van Fosson, College Springs, Mrs Letha New, and Mrs Lena Pistole of Clarinda, and one half brother, Arthur Nicola, Falls City, Neb also survive. He was preceded in death by one daughter Betty Jean who died when 20 months old. Funeral services were conducted at Walker Funeral Home Sunday afternoon with Rev H LaVern Kinzel in charge. Mary Brummett and Aletha Hutchings provided the music. Casket Bearers were Dwight Mothershead, Harmon Mothershead, Howard Van Fosson, John Henry Pistole, Robert Blake and Robert New. Burial was in the Washington Cemetery at Gravity. Clarinda Herald Journal, Thursday, May 14, 1970 Mrs Elzie L Blake, 70, died in Centerville Funeral service for Mrs Elzie L (Ruby A) Blake is to be held at 10:30 am Friday at the Walker Funeral Home following her death Tuesday night at the St Joseph Hospital in Centerville. Mrs Blake has not been in good health for some time, and has been staying with a daughter, Mrs Quentin King, at Centerville since her husband's death on Feb 19. She was born April 1, 1900 at Bedford to Harmon and Mattie Keith Mothershead. She was married to Elzie Blake in 1920 at Hopkins, Mo. The family home has recently been at 305 East Main St. The services Friday will have the Rev H LaVern Kinzel as minister, and Mrs John Brummett and Miss Aletha Hutchings will furnish the music. Casket bearers are David King, Dean Herzberg, Wendell Warrick, Dwight, Oliver and Harmon Mothershead. Burial is at the cemetery at Gravity. Her survivors include a son, Arthur of Molalla, Ore, two daughters, Mrs Harold (Lucille) Warrick of Coos Bay, Ore, and Mrs Quentin (Virginia) King of Centerville, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Three brothers are Olin Mothershead of Gravity, Noble Mothershead of Bedford, Ia, and Harold Mothershead of Maryville, and sister, Mrs Delma Dowling of Renard, Ia.
Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, June 30, 1993 DAVID KEITH CALFEE - Funeral service for David Keith Calfee was held Friday, June 25 at the Bedford Baptist Church with Rev. Ted DeHass and Rev. Marcia Smith Wood officiating. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity. David Keith Calfee, son of Ron and Pam Calfee, was born on October 12, 1970 at Clarinda, Iowa and departed this life on June 21, 1993 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Mason City, Iowa at the age of 22 years, eight months, and nine days. Dave grew up with his family on the farm in rural Gravity, Iowa. He attended Bedford Community Schools, graduating from Bedford High School in 1989. He graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in June of 1993 with a degree in Ag Business and immediately moved to Ackley, Iowa where he had been hired by Farm Service Supply of Eldora, Iowa. Dave was living in Ackley, Iowa. While in high school, Dave was active in FFA, 4-H, football, golf, and basketball. While at college he was president of the Ag Econ Club and was a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma. She had moved to Clarinda from Gravity about 10 years ago. Survivors are her daughter Eleanor Ronnau and husband of Kansas City, Mo, and a son, Glen Billy, and wife of Gravity; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one sister, Mary Beemer Schrader of Neligh, Ne. Services were held Jan. 2 at Shum Novinger Funeral home in Bedford with burial in Washington cemetery at Gravity. [CHURCHILL, NORA ELLEN GARRETT] Bedford Times-Press, Thursday, January 10, 1985, p. 6 Services for Nora Garrett Churchill held Funeral services for Nora Garrett Churchill, 78, were held January 2 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Mrs. Churchill died December 30, 1984 at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda. Interment was at Washington Cemetery in Gravity. Nora Ellen Garrett Churchill, daughter of Frank J. Garrett and Helen Mae Burke Garrett, was born at Wetmore Kansas June 23, 1906. When she was a young girl she moved with her parents to the Gravity, Iowa area where she attended the public school and grew to maturity. On February 20, 1924 she was united in marriage to Clarence "Pete" Churchill of Bedford, Iowa. They lived all of their married life in the Gravity community. Two children were born to them: Eleanor and Glen Billy. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband who died in February 1966; a grandson Larry C. Churchill and a sister, Ethel Thurber. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Eleanor and her husband Hank Ronnau of Kansas City, Mo.; son, Glen Billy Churchill and his wife Florine of Gravity, Iowa; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren and a sister, Mary Beemer Schrader of Neeley, Ne.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. While living in Gravity area she attended the United Methodist Church. In 1973 she moved to Clarinda, Iowa where she has continued to reside. Her family and friends will remember her as a kind and considerate loved one and she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Carl Cummings officiating. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Iowa. Mrs. Davis died August 25, 1986 at Greater Community Hospital in Creston. Dora Thelma Rouse, daughter of Harry Rouse and Mae Rouse, was born at Red Oak, Iowa August 19, 1911. She grew to maturity in the Red Oak area where she attended the public school. On December 16, 1929 she was united in marriage to Harley Davis and they lived on farms in the Gravity and Blockton community for 50 years before retiring and moving to Bedford, Iowa where they have continued to reside. She took a special delight in gardening and she loved her flower garden and working with the flowers. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Her husband Harley survives her; also other relatives and friends. Mr. Depew died February 8, 1975 at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Iowa. George Robert Depew was born March 4, 1884 at Gray, Iowa, the son of John and Jennie Depew. On December 8, 1917, he was married to Ida Martin Depew and to this union one child was born, Leota Belle, who preceded him in death; also one stepdaughter, Dorotha Sharp, of Mound City, Mo. As a young man George attended Page County rural schools and Western Normal College in Shenandoah. He also attended auctioneer school at Trenton, Mo. Much of his life was spent in Taylor County in the Gravity and Bedford areas. He was a faithful member of the Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Ida, of Bedford; daughter, Dorotha Sharp, and husband, Garth, of Mound City, Mo.; one granddaughter, Rita Northup, and husband, Russell, and two great granddaughters of Singapore; one brother, J. A. Depew, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; one sister, Jennie Cagley, of Clarinda; a sister-in-law, Corda Depew, of Torrance, California. Committal services for Mrs. George (Ida) Depew, 89, were held Wednesday afternoon at the Gravity Cemetery following her death at Mound City this Monday morning. Mrs. Depew had lived in the Gravity and Bedford area all of her life. She had been living with a daughter in Mound City for about two years. Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Garth Sharp, at Mound City; a granddaughter and a great granddaughter. Mrs. Jennie Cagley of Clarinda is a sister-in-law. A memorial is being established with the Gravity Christian Church. Bedford Times-Press, Thursday, March 3, 1983, p. 4 John Dille, 80, Last Rites Held February 28 Funeral services for John Dille, 80, of Gravity, Iowa were held February 28 in the Christian Church in Gravity conducted by Rev. Roger Charley. Mr. Dille died February 25, 1983 in Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, Nebr. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity. John Dille, son of Albert and Mary Dille, was born in Monroe County, Iowa June 15, 1902. He attended grade school in Monroe County and high school and college in Kirksville, Mo. He was graduated from Chillicothe Business College, Chillicothe, Mo. On July 4, 1925 he was united in marriage to Ruby Allen at Kirksville, Mo. To this union two children were born: Rolin and Joan. They lived in Moravia, Iowa. They moved to Gravity, Iowa where Mr. Dille was engaged in banking. He was a member of the Christian Church, Gravity, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Willie, Roy, Louie and Harley. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Ruby; children: Rolin and Joan; grandchildren Pamela, Randy, Karen, Rick and Jayne; and great grandson Troy. Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, January 4, 1989 RUBY PEARL DILLE Ruby Pearl Dille, 82, died at the Griswold Care Center on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 1988. She was born February 1, 1906 at South Gifford, Mo., the daughter of John T. and Vera E. Mock Allen. She attended schools in Macon County, Mo. and State Teachers College at Kirksville, Mo. Her marriage to John E. Dille took place July 4, 1925 at Kirksville, Mo. To this union two children were born: Rolin and Joan. They lived in Moravia, Iowa, later moving to Gravity, Iowa where Mr. Dille was engaged in banking. She was a member of the Christian Church in Gravity, Iowa She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her son-in-law and two brothers-n-law. Left to cherish her memory are her son Rolin Dille of Battle Creek, Mi.; her daughter, Joan Baker of Griswold, Iowa; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren; three sisters and one brother. Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, March 5, 2003 DOROTHY LAVAUGHN DUGAN - Dorothy LaVaughn Dugan, daughter of Frank Elmer and Alta Burton Jane Huffman Diggs, was born October 25, 1921 in Page County, near Clarinda, Iowa. Dorothy LaVaughn passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2003 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Coming, Iowa at the age of 81 years and four months. Dorothy LaVaughn attended Hawleyville School eight years except the last three months when the family moved to Taylor County in March of 1935. She finished at Antioch School in Holt Township. Her eighth grade graduation was held at the county seat in Bedford, Iowa. On June 15, 1948, she was united in marriage to Lowell Milo Dugan in a bedroom in the home of Rev. James Pearson, radio pastor of KFNF Radio in Shenandoah, Iowa. Rev. Pearson was sick, but determined to perform the ceremony, so he donned his robe and stood next to his bed to marry the couple. To this union three daughters were born: Judy Carole, Betty Jane and Connie Dene. The couple lived on a farm northwest of Gravity, Iowa, until they moved to Bedford in October 2002. Dorothy LaVaughn worked hard, raised a large garden, and especially loved her flowers. She took pride in keeping her house neat. Her grandchildren and all babies had a special place in her heart. Playing her guitar and singing country western music has always been her favorite pastime. She was a member of the Gravity Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Lowell of Bedford; her daughters, Judy Blake and her husband, Richard of Gravity, Betty Hughes and her husband, Jim of Gravity, Connie Townsend and her husband, Ed of Bedford; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jim, Joshua, and Jason Blake, Lana Hughes Davis, Chad Hughes, Jennifer Tornholm Matheny, Jake Tornholm, and Colton Townsend; great grandchildren, Echo and Milo Blake, Sierra and Calyn Matheny, Jared and Chelse Davis; brothers, Harley Diggs of Clarinda, Francis Diggs and his wife, Reta of Clarinda; sisters, Elzene Diggs of Clarinda; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Diggs of Hopkins, MO. Preceding Dorothy LaVaughn in death were her parents, four sisters, Lela Wirth, Stella Nickell, Zella Wiley, Elma Schooling and one brother, Hildred Diggs. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 28, 2003 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Bedford with Pastor Bob Thompson officiating. Burial was in the Washington Cemetery at Gravity. Memorials were suggested to the Gravity American Legion Post 578 or the Gravity Legion Auxiliary. [EIGHMY, LETHA ESTHER PERKINS] Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, December 8, 1993 LETHA E. EIGHMY - Mrs. Letha E. Eighmy, 94, of Clarinda died Friday morning, Dec. 3 at Clarinda Municipal Hospital. She was born August 3, 1899, near Maloy, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Eva Lacy Perkins. She was married to Gayol Eighmy on February 25, 1917. He preceded her in death February 13, 1973. Mrs. Eighmy had worked at the Glenwood State School and Gravity school lunch program. She moved to Clarinda from Gravity in 1974. Survivors include five children: Mildred Goslin, Nampa; Idaho; Earl and wife Mary Eighmy, Clarksville, Tenn.; Marie Babcock, New Market, Iowa; Ivan and wife Dorothy Eighmy, Fontanelle, Iowa; Mrs. Herb (Lorraine) DeBolt, Clarinda, Iowa; 16 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by parents, husband, two brothers and one sister. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 6 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. Blair Rohde-Frank officiating. Burial was in Washington Cemetery in Gravity. Bedford Times-Press, Thursday, June 19, 1980 John Gibson, 73 Final Rites Were Held June 14 Funeral services for John Delbert Gibson, 73, of Gravity, Iowa, held June 14 in the Gravity United Methodist Church, were conducted by Rev. Ross Keyt. Mr. Gibson died June 11, 1980 in Clarinda, Iowa. Gravity Legion Post #578 presented military honors at Washington Cemetery, Gravity. John Delbert Gibson, son of Delbert Clair Gibson and Roxy M. Pearce, was born at Blanchard, Iowa, April 22, 1907. He grew to maturity at College Springs where he attended the public schools. On February 4, 1939 he was united in marriage to Flora Louise Stoab [Staab] at Lakin, Kansas. To this union four children were born: John, Linda, Dan and Lyle. He lived in Gravity, Iowa many years and was employed in road construction much of his life. He served in World War II and was an engineer in construction in the Philippines. [earl] Glasman, 73, died Sunday morning (Oct. 16, 1983) in a Kansas City hospital. Born Sept. 16, 1910, in Grant City, she was the daughter of James and Bertha Anna Welton Scroggie. She spent most of her life in Creston, Iowa, and lived in Maryville since 1977. She married A. [ntone] C. Glasman in 1929, and he died in 1972. Survivors are two brothers, Leonard Scroggie, Bedford, Iowa, and Junior Scroggie, Conway, Iowa: and a, sister, Estle Dalbey, Burlington Jct.; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Gold died November 19, 1986 at Municipal Hospital in Clarinda. Drexel Wilfred Gold, son of Vernon J. Gold and Mayme Herring Gold, was born in rural Taylor County, Iowa January 27, 1914. He attended the Gravity Public School and was graduated from Gravity High School in 1931. In 1983 he was united in marriage to Berniece M. Webb, also of rural Taylor County. To this union, one son was born; Allen who lives in Dallas, Texas. Drexel attended business college at Chillicothe, Missouri. In 1936 he began work as a Soil Technician in Bedford and was employed by the Soil District until he entered the service of his country during World War II, serving in the U. S. Navy. Upon his return following the War he continued his career as a Soil Technician in the Soil Conservation Service. He retired from the agency in 1973 after 37 years of federal employment. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Byron. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Berniece of the home; son Allen and daughter-in-law, Jan; grandsons Drexel and Steve; granddaughter Laurie and great grandson Jacob. He is also survived by his sister, Geraldyne Kelsey of Roswell, Georgia and brother, Vernon "Sonny" Gold of Seymour, Iowa; other relatives and friends. In his younger years he was extremely active in music. He had a beautiful tenor voice and at one time hosted a music program over K S O Radio station in Clarinda, Iowa. His favorite hobby was golf and he was a member of the Bedford Country Club for many years. Drexel was a longtime member of the Bedford United Methodist Church and a member of the American Legion. Henton Rites Nov. 5 Funeral services for David C. Henton, former Gravity resident, were held November 5 at the Gravity Methodist Church with Rev. James Sheckler officiating. Mr. Henton died at Rosary Hospital, Corning, November 2, 1964, at the age of 71 years, ten months and 20 days. Gravity American Legion Post No. 578 was in charge of military honors at Washington Cemetery, Gravity. Included in the services was the following obituary. David Couser Henton, son of Joseph M. and Clara M. Henton, was born December 12, 1892 at Carbon, Iowa. On May 7, 1932, at Maryville, Mo., he was united in marriage with Mary Fern Meggison, and to this union was born one son, Larry David. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mildred Liddle; six brothers, Edward, Frank, William, Alva, Thomas and John. As a young man he homesteaded in Montana, and then in 1924 he returned to Iowa and mined coal until 1935 when he moved to Gravity, Iowa. Here he spent the remainder of his lite as a farmer except for four years when he ran a coal bank in Adams County. On Sept. 20, 1917, he joined the armed service of his country and spent 18 months in Europe where he took part in five major battles of the War: Aisne, Aisne Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Defensive Sector. He received his honorable discharge Aug. 16, 1919. He belonged to the American Legion for 41 years and was a member of the Veterans of World War I. He was also a member of the Wild Life Conservation Federation. On June 9, 1935, he and his wife transferred their membership to the Gravity Methodist Church where he has taken an active part. He was a steward of the Church Board at the time he died. He is survived by his wife and son; a daughter-in-law, Cerease; two granddaughters, Kimberly Lynne and Lisa Lorraine; two sisters, Mrs. Elsie R. Peters of Bakersfield, Calif., and Mrs. Pearl I. She was a member of the Gravity Christian Church and UAW serving as recording secretary. [KELSEY, GEROLDYNE FAYE GOLD DAVIDSON BALLEW] Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, December 24, 2003 Geroldyne Faye Gold Davidson Ballew Kelsey Geroldyne Faye Gold, daughter of Mary Ellen (Mayme) Herring Gold and Vernon Jesse Gold, was born September 8, 1910 in rural Taylor Co. Iowa and died November 25, 2003 in Leavenworth WA. In Iowa she grew to adulthood, graduated from Gravity IA, high school, and then attended beauty school in Des Moines IA. While there she met and married James H. Davidson, the father of her two daughters and a son. Later they divorced and she worked at various jobs during the depression until she met and married Howard Ballew of the Soil Conservation Service. They lived in Corydon IA, most of their married life, and until his death in 1959. In 1967 she went to California to visit her two daughters and their families. There she met and married Dray [Raymond] Huff Kelsey of San Jose. In 1977 they moved to Roswell GA, near their daughter Joanne and her family. In 1997 they moved to Leavenworth WA, to be near family again. Upon Ray's passing in 1999, Geroldyne remained in her home, assisted by family. Even after a light stroke in 2000 she was able to remain in her own home, which mattered very much to her. Geroldyne was a devoted homemaker and wife who loved making and keeping an attractive and comfortable home. An excellent cook, she baked many a delicious treat for friends and family at the holidays. She loved her church and her many friends, and always had a cheerful smile. In her last years she looked forward to seeing her friends at her weekly hair appointment at the Mountain Meadows Facility across from her home, and enjoyed the kind attentions of other residents in the condo complex where she lived. She is survived by her daughters, Gloria Davidson of San Jose CA, and Joanne Saliby and her husband, Alex of Leavenworth; stepson, William Kelsey and his wife Barbara of Burlingame CA, a brother and sister-in-law, V. Lyle and his parents lived in Colorado, Kansas and Arkansas before moving to Iowa in 1941. Here Lyle grew to maturity and attended various schools in southwest Iowa. December 18, 1948 Lyle entered the U.S. Army and was assigned to Company C 87th Inf. 10th Reg. Inf. division. Lyle's marriage to Delores Ann (daughter of John and Mary Kunkel Lallier of Algona, Iowa took place in Des Moines, Ia. Sept. 5, 1953. Their 30 plus years together was spent mainly in the Des Moines and Winterset area and in Varina, Iowa where Lyle owned and operated an electrical repair business for the past several years. Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, March 9, 1994 KENNETH EDWARD LOCK Kenneth Edward Lock was the son of John Edward Lock and Nellie Sullivan Lock. Kenneth was born at Lenox, Iowa December 21, 1918 and departed this life on February 28, 1994 at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital. He lived and fanned in Taylor County all his life except for five years when they lived and worked in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Kenneth and Marjorie Strum [Sturm] Lock were united in marriage on November 13, 1941. Kenneth and Marjorie celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1991 with lots of friends and family. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and his great grandchild, Sawyer. He was always on the go, visiting friends, attending Bedford sports activities to watch his grandchildren, and spending time with his friends and neighbors at coffee each morning. His cattle were his pride and joy. With only one arm he worked and accomplished the impossible, farming, bailing hay, and tending to the cattle. He lived to help his neighbors and appreciated all the neighbors helping him. A very special memory was of the trip taken to Disney World in Florida with his wife Marjorie, son Dan, grandchildren Tammie and Troy, daughter Pam and her husband Rick and their two boys, Brad and Bruce. The whole family celebrated Marjorie and Kenneth's 50th wedding anniversary. Kenneth always referred to this vacation as one of the best times of his life. He departed this life on March 18, 1992 at his home in Bedford. Most of his life was spent in Taylor County. He was united in marriage to Vada Iola Huss at Butler, Mo. on November 28, 1930. To this union three children were born. Vada preceded him in death in 1978. Most of Howard's life was spent with him being engaged in farming, an occupation which he dearly loved to do. After he retired from farming, he did odd jobs, and mowed cemeteries and later the Bedford Park. He took great pride in doing the best job possible at whatever job he might be working at. On February 15, 1979 Howard was united in marriage to Louie Grace Mendenhall Johnson. They have lived in Bedford for the past few years. Howard was a faithful member of the Siam Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Vada, two brothers and one sister. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Louie of the home in Bedford; son Lewis and wife Dwylah of Ludlow, Mo.; his daughter Joreen and husband Gerald Cole of Richmond, Mo.; his son Larry and wife Joyce of Memphis, Mo.; two sisters, eight grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Vada Iola Huss, daughter of Lewis and Jane Huss, was born at Gravity, Iowa, December 9, 1908. She attended school at Gravity and Villisca, Iowa. She taught school for 10 years. On November 28, 1930 she was united in marriage to Howard McColm at Butler, Mo. They farmed in Taylor County and have made their home in Bedford since. Vada is survived by her husband, Howard at the home; three children: Lewis McColm and his wife Dwylah at Ludlow, Mo.; Joreen and her husband, Jerry Cole, of Richmond, Mo., and Larry, his wife, Joyce, of Kahoka. Mo.; eight grandchildren; two sisters: Mildred Moore and Lola Perdew of Bedford, Iowa; two brothers: Charles Huss of Lenox, Ia.; and Calvin Huss of Lyons, Colo., and several nieces and nephews. Vada was a wonderful sister, wife and mother. She was most considerate of her grandchildren. She was a thoughtful neighbor; she gave so much of herself to those about her. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and was active in the women's work of the church. She took a leading part in the work of the Senior Citizens group. Vada adopted as her life's philosophy: "I shall not pass through this way but once. Any good that I can therefore do, or any kindness I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it; For I shall not pass this way again." Vada was a woman of strength, loved her family, loyal to her husband, and a friend to all. [saiah] and Grace Pfander Miller was born near Sharpsburg in Taylor County, Iowa October 11, 1925 and departed this life November 17 [18], 1993 at Omaha, Neb. at the age of 68 years, one month and six days. He attended rural schools in Taylor County. On February 21, 1947, Elvin was married to Melvena Opal Ridnour. Melvena departed this life June 6, 1959. On June 17, 1962 he was married to Mary Lou Damewood at Bedford, Iowa. Elvin was proud to have served in the Navy during World War II. He served on the USS General C. C. Ballou, a troop transport. Farming was an important part of Elvin's life. As a young man he helped his father with the threshing and he enjoyed telling of the experiences of the crew. He was always proud of his Hereford and later, Gelveigh cattle He was proud and supportive of his family, Janie (Mrs. Randal Lewis), Libertyville, Iowa; Kathryn (Mrs. James Christensen), Greenfield, Iowa; Rosalie (Mrs. Rick Bissell), Corning, Iowa; James (Jennifer Brown fiance), Sharpsburg, Iowa; and Jean, student at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He was always interested in the activities of his grandchildren: Scott and Nicole Lewis, Danelle, John, Mandy, Jason, Justin, Joshua and Brandi Christensen and Chelsi Bissell. He was very excited to have a great grandson, Mikel Anthony Feick. The Richard Wilson family also held a very special place in Elvin's life and heart. Elvin was a member and past president of the Lenox Stock and Saddle Club and was a loyal supporter of the Lenox Rodeo. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star, Lenox. He was a member of the Sharpsburg Presbyterian Church, having served as a deacon and elder. He was a member of the Clearfield Lions Club and enjoyed the annual trek to the Iowa State Fair. He enjoyed fishing with Swede and deer hunting with Ivan and the rest of the group. Elvin felt education was very important. He always attended the many school activities of his children. Elvin encouraged all young people to realize the importance of a high school education. Catherine was born January 5, 1903 in Corning, Iowa to Johnnie J. and Alice (Dwyer) Moore. Catherine attended rural school in Adams County, three years of high school at Corning. She attended her senior year at Bedford High School, graduating in 1921 with a Normal Training Teaching Certificate. She taught in five rural county schools of Taylor County: Spread Eagle, Lee #7, Barton, Maple Grove, and Hickory Grove. She attended Cedar Falls Teachers College and Maryville, Mo. Teachers College, several summer vacation months earning her Bachelor's and Master's Degree of Education. Catherine taught kindergarten at Conway Consolidated School for several years. In 1945 she began teaching kindergarten in the Clarinda Public Schools, at Lincoln and Garfield Schools. She retired in 1968. Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 10, 1994 at Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home in Bedford with Pastor Steve Peters of the Methodist Church officiating. Interment was in Washington Cemetery, Gravity. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Edward, William and Claude, and one sister, Julia. He had lived in Adams and Taylor counties, and grew to maturity in Taylor County where he attended public school and was active in community affairs. On June 1, 1935, he was united in marriage to Mildred Huss at the Methodist church in Creston. They lived on farms in Taylor County until he retired and moved to Bedford in 1974. Bedford Times-Press, Thursday, January 24, 1985 Mildred Moore Services held Monday Services for Mildred Moore, 74, were held January 21 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Carl Cummings. Mrs. Moore died at Bedford Manor in Bedford. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity. Mildred Oine Huss Moore, daughter of Lewis B. [ertain] Huss and Jane Firkins Huss was born in Taylor County Iowa, November 1, 1910. She attended Antioch rural school and the Gravity and Villisca High School and Iowa State Teachers College Extension Summer School in Corning, Iowa to qualify for her teacher's certificate. She taught school several years when means of transportation was sometimes by horseback. On June 1, 1935 she was united in marriage to Claude H. Moore at Creston, Iowa and they lived on farms in the Gravity area until they moved to Bedford in 1975 where she has continued to reside. On the farm, she shared with her husband the tasks of outside work; a large garden; chickens and yard work in addition to being a homemaker. Her delight was in preparing dinners for large family gatherings. She was faithful in caring for her parents and helped with the care of her husband's parents during illnesses; she put the needs and the welfare of family and friends first. Early in her youth she was baptized at the Guss Maple Grove Methodist Church and became a member there. After moving to Bedford she belonged to the United Methodist Women's Circle. She had helped to organize the U. T. D. Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Claude, who died in 1979; one sister, Vada McColm and a nephew Monte Perdew. Left to cherish her memory are two brothers, Charles Huss and his wife Gwendolyn of Lenox, Iowa; Calvin Huss and his wife Golda of Lyons, Colorado; and one sister, Lola and her husband, Howard Perdew, of Bedford, Iowa; nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends. Her good life so well lived will remain a precious memory for all those who knew and loved her. [MOTHERSHEAD, NAOMI KATHERINE WILSON] Bedford Times-Press, Thursday, September 16, 1965 Funeral services for Mrs. Ollen (Naomi) Mothershead of Gravity were held Sept. 11 at the Bedford Methodist Church with Rev. J. Milton Kinney and Carl Cummings officiating. Mrs. Mothershead died at her home southwest of Gravity September 8, 1965, at the age 52 years, nine months and 22 days. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Ia. Included in the services was the following obituary. Naomi Katherine Wilson, daughter of Oliver J. and Cora Clayton Wilson, was born Nov. 16, 1912 near Siam in Taylor county Iowa. When she was four years of age the family moved southwest of Hopkins, Mo., in the Goodhope community where she attended the Highland Public School and Hopkins High School. Early in her youth she gave her life to her Lord and became a member of the Goodhope Methodist Church and later her church membership was transferred to the Gravity Methodist Church. On Jan. 7, 1930 she was united in marriage to Ollen Mothershead at the Methodist parsonage in Bedford, Iowa and to them three children were born: Oliver, Dwight and Evelyn. The first three years of their married life they lived in Missouri and since then they have lived on farms in Iowa. She was preceded to death by her parents, a brother, Glen, who passed away in infancy and a sister, Eva Peterman. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Ollen; sons, Oliver and his wife Mary of Nodaway, Iowa, Dwight of the home and a daughter Evelyn and her husband, Kenneth Lyles of Ephrata, Wash.; grandchildren, Tracey, Terry, Teresa and Todd Mothershead and Kima and Kent Lyles; and the following brothers and sisters and families: Carl Wilson of Bedford, Stella Brown of Clarinda, George Wilson of Haywood, Calif., Pearl Holker of Long Beach, Calif., Velma Cooper of Yakima, Wash., Roy Wilson, Orville Wilson and Milo Wilson of Hopkins, Mo.; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. Naomi was a member of the Wild Rose Community Club and she enjoyed her friends and neighbors and her friends were numbered by all who knew her. She was a kind and loving wife and mother and will be greatly missed by all who knew her and the many acts and deeds of help and kindness that she did for others will long remain a blessed memory. Ollen Hendry Mothershead, son of Harmon Mothershead and Eva May Hendry Mothershead was born in Taylor County, Iowa July 9, 1910. He grew to maturity in the community where he was born where he attended the public school and the Hazel Dell Church. On January 7, 1930 he was united in marriage to Naomi Kathryn Wilson and with the exception of one year they lived in Washington State they resided on farms in the Hopkins and Bedford area. Three children were born to this union: Oliver LeRoy, Dwight, Eugene and Evelyn Rose. His wife Naomi passed away September 8, 1965. On September 13, 1966 he was united in marriage to Doris Terrell Young. She passed away January 15, 1987. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ruby Blake. Left to cherish his memory are his three children: Oliver Mothershead and his wife Mary of Leon, Ia.; Dwight Mothershead and his wife Marilyn of Rogers, Ark.; Evelyn and her husband Kenneth Lyles of Deer Park, Wa.; two step children, James Young and his wife Carolyn of Clarinda, Ia. and Susan Danner of Maryville, Mo.; two brothers: Harold Mothershead and his wife Mable of Maryville, Mo. and Noble Mothershead and his wife Leora of Bedford, Ia.; a sister, Dema Dowling of Farmhamville, Ia.; a stepbrother, Loren Buzzard and a stepsister, Lela Florea; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, July 21, 1999 - Funeral services for Thomas Viviano Ontiveros, 73, Bedford were Monday, July 12 at the Sharpsburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Tim Maxa officiating. Burial was in Gravity, IA. Mr. Ontiveros died Wednesday, July 7, 1999 at his home of natural causes. He was born April 10, 1926 in Somerville, TX to Tomas and Refugio Ontiveros. He grew up and attended school in Houston, TX. Thomas served his country in the United States Army from October 6, 1947 to October 6, 1951. On April 5, 1952 he graduated from the Houston Police Academy and joined the City of Houston Police Department. He retired after 25 years of service. He was united in marriage to Juanita Christine Melton on April 14, 1958 and they raised five children together. Several years after his wife's death (November 21, 1981) he moved to Iowa to be with his children and grandchildren. He resided in Lenox and Sharpsburg for short periods of time before moving to Bedford. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; an infant daughter, Patricia; a son, Thomas; a brother, Jesse Ontiveros; and a sister, Guadalupe Ontiveros. Survivors include his son Benjamin Ontiveros of Lansing, KS; three daughters, Patricia Guthrie of Florida; Diana Bolinger of Ellston, IA and Joyce Booth of Stanton, IA; 13 grandchildren; one great grandchild; two brothers, Pete Ontiveros of La Habra, CA and John Ontiveros of Houston, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, March 30, 1988 NEVA PFANDER - Services for Neva Pfander, 83, were held March 25 at Shum- Novinger Funeral Home. Burial was at Washington Cemetery in Gravity, Ia. Mrs. Pfander died March 23, 1988 at her home in Bedford, Ia. Neva Olive Whipple Pfander, daughter of Austin Crary and Lula Whipple was born at Emerson, Iowa November 4, 1904. She lived in Mills County through 11th grade when they moved to Sharpsburg, where she completed 12th grade, becoming the first 12th grade graduate. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. On Nov. 4, 1922 she was united in marriage to Cloyd W. [illiam] Pfander at her parents home in Sharpsburg and they lived in the Sharpsburg area. To this union seven children were born, Lorna Hall, Long Beach, Ca.; Horace Pfander, Ft. Collins, Co.; Maxine Bates, Coon Rapids, Mn.; Melvin Pfander, Sharpsburg, Ia.; Betty Robertson, Belton, Mo.; Berneice Allen, St. Joseph, Mo.; and Eloise Cunningham, Fayetteville, N.C. Her life was spent caring for her home and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, and a brother. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, seven children, 18 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. She has one uncle, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She attended Bedford Christian-Presbyterian Church and participated in its women's group activities. She was a kind and considerate wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, November 21, 1990 LESTER JOSEPH POSTEN - Funeral services for Lester Posten were held Saturday, Nov. 17, 1990 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Holdsworth officiating. Interment was in Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Iowa. Lester Joseph Posten, son of Ernest and Mary Bush Posten was born in Taylor County September 20, 1909 and departed this life November 14, 1990 at the St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, Mo. at the age of 81 years, one month, 25 days. He lived in Taylor County all his life and grew to maturity there. He attended the public school and graduated with the Gravity class of 1929. On August 8, 1936 he was united in marriage to Mary Mae Cochran at Chicago, Ill. They lived always in Taylor County near Gravity. To this union two sons were born, Victor Dean in 1940, and Kermitt Lee in 1949. They enjoyed 54 years together last August 8. He was engaged in farming and wood crafting. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Orville in 1956. Left to cherish his memory are: Mary Mae, his wife; and two sons Victor and Kermitt and wife Sue; a sister Cleo Roush in the nursing home; granddaughters Nichole and Angela Posten, Shannon Posten Blake and husband Jeff. He was a member of the Gravity Christian Church and Gravity Fire Department. Lester was a very good farmer. He loved the land, conserved it, and never wanted to leave the farm. This wish was granted for he was born in Taylor County and lived his life out here. He enjoyed raising good cattle and hogs, and had a great love for horses. In his younger years he owned and trained some riding horses. He loved the children who rode on his school bus for 18 years and was pleased when they greeted him as they grew up. He was an honest man who never made a purchase of any kind without knowing he definitely could pay for it. As he retired from farming, his carpenter skills led to a hobby in woodcraft. He has crafted many beautiful and useful articles, and enjoyed displaying at craft shows until the past year when infirmities began setting in. Dear to his heart was the Gravity Fire Department. He and two other Gravity citizens started the organization. Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, June 19, 1991 VICTOR DEAN POSTEN - Victor Dean Posten, son of Lester and Mary Mae Cochran Posten, was born at rural Gravity, Iowa May 31, 1940 and departed this life June 11,1991 in rural Taylor County, at the age of 51 years and 11 days. He lived in rural Taylor County and grew to maturity near Gravity, Iowa where he attended the public school and Gravity Christian Church. On September 19,1963 he was united in marriage to Karen Walston of Bedford, Iowa at the Bedford Baptist Church, and they lived in Bedford. To this union two children were born, Melinda Kim and Junior, both now mature and married. Later on May 31, 1970 he was married to Carol Ann Mayo of Denver, Colo. To this union one daughter, Shannon Dee, was born June 15, 1972. Shannon was married to Jeffery Blake of Gravity, Iowa of Gravity on May 19, 1990. He was employed by the J.C. Penny Co. in Denver and Colorado Springs, Colo, until live years ago. Because of his life-time diabetic problems, he came back to Gravity to live with his parents. He was preceded in death by his father, Lester Posten, who passed away Nov. 14, 1990. Left to cherish his memory are: daughter Shannon and husband Jeff; mother, Mary Mae Posten; brother, Kermitt Posten and family, aunt Cleo Roush and family, uncle Marvin Cochran and family, many cousins and friends. He was a member of the Gravity Christian Church, The Boy Scouts of America, the J.C. organization in Denver. Victor enjoyed woodworking in his father's shop, fishing, and meeting his friends at the Gravity Koffee Kup. He enjoyed taking a turn as a volunteer there. He was a kind and considerate son, father, and friend and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Bedford Times-Press, March 7, 1968, p. 5 Charles Randolph Rites Today Charles Randolph, 83, died March 3 at the West Heights Manor in Clarinda where he had been under care since November. He and his wife would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Friday. He was born at Oakland, Mo., to Newton and Mary Randolph. He and the former Sarah Staines [Starnes] were married in 1906. They farmed for several years near Oakland and for 31 years near Gravity. Mrs. Randolph survives her husband, as do their four children: Herman Randolph of Coin, Mrs. Alma Bird of New Market, Mrs. Helen Lawrence and Raymond Randolph, both of Hopkins. Although the family residence was at Gravity, Mr. Randolph had been under care at Pearl Terrace manor in Bedford during a long illness prior to going to Clarinda. The funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday, March 7 at Walker Funeral Home. Burial will be at Gravity. Rev. Roger Charley officiated. Interment was at Washington Cemetery in Gravity. Mr. Sollars died December 23, 1984 at St. Mary's Hospital in Blue Springs, Mo. Lawrence Eugene Sollars, son of Arthur D. [arrell] Sollars, Jr. and Mary Jane West was born January 12, 1943 at Gravity, Iowa. On July 19, 1980 he married Michelle Minks. He lived in Oak Grove, Mo., having moved there two years ago from Omaha, Ne. Surviving are his wife, Michelle, a stepson, Jason Thompson, two daughters, Corine Sollars of Omaha and Ashly Nicole Sollars of the home, a brother, Robert Sollars of Richmond, Mo., sister, Justine Martin, Gravity, paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Sollars, Sr., Gravity, aunt, Darlene West, Gravity. Larry was a self-employed musician and a mechanic for Sollars and Son, Richmond, Mo. The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association. [VALENTINE, KATHRYN WILMA ROBEY] Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, July 14, 2004 WILMA VALENTINE Funeral services for Wilma Valentine, age 86 of Bedford, who died Saturday, July 3, 2004 at the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center, were held Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home with Pastor William Ballard officiating. Interment was held at the Washington Cemetery in Gravity. Memorials can be given in Wilma's name. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford. Kathryn Wilma Robey Valentine was born March 3, 1918, the daughter of Clark Robey and Mabel Cavner Robey in South Dakota. The family moved to Taylor County when Wilma was a young child. She attended rural schools, graduating from the Blockton High School with the Class of 1935. Wilma taught country school in the Ladoga area around Gravity. On April 3, 1943, she was united in marriage to Gerald M. Valentine in Maryville, Missouri. Together they farmed north of Gravity before retiring to Bedford in 1981. Wilma was an active member of the Gravity/ Bedford United Methodist Church and the JFF club for many years. She taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School and helped with church dinners. Wilma was a wonderful person who had many blessings bestowed upon her in life. She was richly blessed with health, happiness, family and friends. She was passionate about the outdoors enjoying both nature and animals. She loved the farm life, working in her large garden, canning and freezing the garden produce. She was an avid reader and enjoyed working crossword puzzles. Wilma had a lot of love and kindness to give to all she met and will be greatly missed. Left to cherish Wilma's memory are her son Ronald Valentine and wife Bedetta, of Bella Vista, Arkansas; her daughter Donna Scheele and husband David of Oswego, Illinois; three grandchildren, Kristen (Valentine) Schultz and husband Jeremiah of Edgerton, Kansas; Jennifer Scheele of Oswego, Illinois; and Joshua Scheele of Oswego, Illinois; and three great-grandchildren Taylor, Dylan, and Gabriel Schultz of Edgerton, Kansas. Preceding Wilma in death were her parents Clark and Mabel, and her husband Gerald in 2001.
