Final Rites Are Held For Mrs, M. E. LaRue

Funeral services for Audrey Jeanette LaRue, 37, of Denison, Iowa, formerly of Bedford, were held on January 27, 1965 at the First Methodist Church at Denison. Mrs. LaRue died on January 25, 1965. Burial was in the Fairview Township Cemetery near Sloan, Iowa.

She was born on January 24, 1928 at Nemaha, Iowa. As a child she lived in the Nemaha, Sac City, Onawa and S loan areas.

She married Maclyn LaRue on October 7, 1948. Following their marriage they lived in Sloan, Bedford and Denison, Iowa.

Survivors include her husband, her children, Annette, Claire, Janelle, Alan and Philip, all at home, her father, Samuel Peterson, of Sloan, and one sister, Mrs. Donald Byers, of Sloan.

Carl Darwin Sexton Services May 3

Carl Darwin Sexton, 46, assistant registrar at Central Missouri State University, died April 23 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City. He was born in New Market, Iowa on May 22, 1933, the son of Nathan Carl and Hazle [Hazel Lea] Akers Sexton.

He was married to Karen [Kay] Todd June 5, 1965 in Appleton City. Mr. Sexton was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Phi Delta Kappa, and was a past exalted ruler of the Elks Club. He had been vice president for education of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

A graduate of Lenox Community High School, Mr. Sexton received his bachelor's degree from Northwest Missouri State University and his master's and specialist degrees from CMSU. He had taught high school in Clinton for seven years before returning to CMSU as an academic advisor, and later was appointed assistant registrar.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Curtis [Scott]; one daughter, Kenda [Lee]; his mother, Hazle [Hazel] Sexton of Lenox; a sister, Phyllis Murdock of Independence, Iowa; three nieces and one nephew.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 3 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Rev. Roger Reese and Rev. David Bloedel officiating. Burial was in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Elsie Mae Sexton of Gravity died Friday, April 25 at the age of 77 years, one month, 20 days. Funeral services were held at the Shum Funeral Home in Bedford at two o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, April 29. Harold Ingelman officiated. Burial in Washington cemetery at Gravity.

Last rites for Mrs. Elsie Mae Sexton of Gravity were held at the Shum Funeral Home in Bedford the afternoon of April 29. Rev. Harold Ingelman of Corning officiated. Burial was in Washington Township cemetery at Gravity.

Elsie Mae Laird, daughter of Jesse and [Sarah] Elizabeth [Hollis] Laird was born in Taylor County, Iowa, March 5, 1881 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Pete Downey at Corning on April 25 at the age of 77 years, one month, 20 days.

She was married to Nathan [Isaac] Sexton on December 25, 1899 and to them were born nine children, five sons and four daughters. One son, [Frank] Gail, died seven weeks ago. The surviving children are Mrs. Gladys O’Neal of Provo, Utah; Mrs. Beulah Downey and Mrs. Lorna Hardisty, Corning; Mrs. Hazel Green, Cook, Wash.; [Nathan] Carl Sexton, Lenox; Virgil Sexton, Bedford; Jesse [Free] and Francis Sexton, Washington State.

There are also four sons-in-law, four daughters-in-law, 27 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren.

Two brothers preceded her in death.

Frank G. Sexton Of Gravity Dies

Frank G. [ail] Sexton, 56, of Gravity died at St. Francis hospital, Sunday night, March 9. Funeral services were held at the Shum Funeral Home in Bedford Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Harold Ingelman of Corning officiating. Burial in Gravity cemetery.

Mr. Sexton was found by neighbors about noon Sunday on the floor of his home in Gravity, where he lived alone, and was taken to St. Francis hospital, where he never regained consciousness. He is survived by several brothers and sisters.He had never married.

Jesse Sexton Dies in Oregon

Funeral services for Jesse Free Sexton, 60, of Lyle, Wash., formerly of Gravity, were held March 9 at The Dalles, Oregon. Mr. Sexton died at his home in Lyle March 5, 1967. Interment was at The Dalles, Ore.

Jesse Free Sexton, son of Nathan Isaac and Elsie Mae [Laird] Sexton, was born August 7, 1906 at Gravity, Iowa.

On Feb. 21, 1934, he was united in marriage to Edith Marsh Green at Seneca, Kansas. To this union four children were born.

He lived in Iowa until 1948, when he moved to the state of Washington. For the last 15 years he has lived at Lyle and was employed by the Seattle, Portland and Spokane Railway Co.

Mr. Sexton is survived by his wife Edith (Marshie); sons, Richard of Renton, Wash., Allen [Roy] of the U. S. Armed Forces, Vietnam, Gary of Lyle; daughter, Judith Thomas of Yakima; three grandchildren survive: Michael Thomas of Yakima, and Catherine and Scott Sexton of Renton.

He has three brothers, Francis [Leroy] of Wishram, [Lewis] Virgil of Bedford and [Nathan] Carl of Lenox; and sisters, Hazel Green of Cooks, Wash., Gladys O’Neal of Provo, Utah, Beulah Downey and Lorna Hardisty of Corning, Ia.; also a number of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends will cherish his memory

He possessed a generous amount of the ordinary and common virtues of life that made him beloved by all who knew him, but his love and devotion to this wife and family endeared him in their hearts forever.

Last Rites Held April 29 for Virgil Sexton, 67

Funeral services for Lewis Virgil Sexton, 67, of Bedford, held April 29 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted by Rev. Mel Smith and Rev. Marty Burgus. Mr. Sexton died in his Bedford home April 26, 1978. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

Lewis Virgil Sexton, son of Nathan [Isaac] and Elsie (Laird) Sexton, was born on a farm northwest of Gravity, Iowa, February 26, 1911.

On September 29, 1948 he was united in marriage to Roena Sayler Brown. To this union one daughter, Linda Kay, was born.

He served four years and eight months in the U.S. Army during World War II, including one and one-half years in the European theatre. Following his honorable discharge he went to work for the Iowa Highway Commission at Bedford. At his retirement in 1973, he was honored for 28 years of service, including 16 years as foreman.

He was a member of the American Legion, Post 164, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the Gravity Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, [Nathan] Carl, Gael [Frank Gail], and Jess; and one sister, Gladys O'Neal.

He is survived by his wife, Roena; one son by a previous marriage, Ronald Roy of Springfield, Mo.; his daughter, Linda Kay, of Denver, Colo.; a stepson, Richard Brown of Norfolk. Nebr.; one brother, Francis, of Wishram, Wash.; three sisters, Mrs. Beulah Downey of Coming, Iowa, Mrs. Hazel Green and Mrs. Lorna Hardisty of Cook, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

Virgil was a kind and loving husband and father and will be sorely missed by all who knew him and loved him.

Former Resident Dies In The West

Mrs. Margaret Sexton, 43, of Wishram, Wash., a former resident of the Bedford community, died July 6, Last rites were held in The Dalles, Oregon on July 9 and burial was there.

Mrs. Sexton is survived by her husband Francis [Leroy] Sexton, and four children. Also by a sister, Mrs. Nelle Smith of Bedford.

Nathan Sexton, 74 Last Rites Held February 23

Funeral services for Nathan Carl Sexton, 74, of Lenox were held February 23 at Larkin and Bender Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Dick Brown officiating and the Lenox Odd Fellows gave a memorial service. Mr. Sexton died at Lenox Care Center February 20. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

Nathan Carl Sexton, 74, was born August 16, 1900 at Gravity, Iowa, the son of Nathan Isaac and Elsie MacLaird [Mae Laird] Sexton.

He was married on May 24, 1926, to Hazle [Hazel] Lea Akers at Corning, Iowa. To this union were born two children, a daughter, Phyllis, and a son, [Carl] Darwin.

He worked on the Burlington Railroad for 41 years and retired December 31, 1965. All his life was spent in Taylor County. He was an active member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, holding many offices until his health failed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jessie and Gale [Frank Gail], and one sister, Gladys.

He is survived by his wife, Hazle, of Lenox; a daughter, Phyllis Murdock, and husband, Randall, of Independence, Iowa; a son, [Carl] Darwin and wife, Karen [Kay Todd], of Warrensburg, Mo.; grandchildren, Vicki Murdock of Des Moines, Iowa; Pamela Kauffman and husband, David, of Independence, Iowa, Curt Sexton and Kenda Sexton of Warrensburg, Mo., two brothers, [Lewis] Virgil of Bedford, Iowa, and Francis of Wishram, Washington; three sisters, Mrs. Pete (Beulah) Downey of Corning, Iowa, Mrs. James (Hazle) Green and Mrs. James (Lorna) Hardisty, both of Cook, Washington; 11 brothers-in-law; 11 sisters- in-law; many nieces and nephews.

Nate Sexton Dies At Gravity Sept. 13

Nathan I. [saac] Sexton, better known to his friends as “Nate," died suddenly at his home in Gravity about 8 o'clock Wednesday evening following a heart attack. He was sitting in his chair at his home reading the evening paper when death came.

Mr. Sexton was 75 years of age, and had been a resident of Gravity and community for more than fifty years. He is survived by his wife and several children.

OBITUARY

Nathan [Isaac], son of Isaac [Free] and Elizabeth [Sparks] Sexton, was born near Cainsville, Mo., March 23, 1871, and died at his home in Gravity September 13, 1944, at the age of 73 years, 5 months and 13 days.

He was one of a family of 12 children, and only four are now living, namely: Joe Sexton and Ollie Hoadley of Cainsville, Mo.; John of Portales, N. Mex., and Kay Hamilton, near Gravity. In young manhood he united with the Baptist church near where he lived.

He was married to [Elsie] May Laird December 25, 1899. To this union nine children were born—5 boys and 4 girls: Gladys [Pearl] O'Neal of Omaha, Hazel Green of Washington State; Beulah Downey, Lorna [Maxine] Hardesty and Frances [Leroy] of near Corning; [Lewis] Virgil is in the U. S. service in France; [Nathan] Carl, [Frank] Gail and Jesse [Free] in and near Gravity. He also has 19 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was a great lover of home and his family and numbered his friends by his acquaintance.

He had been a resident of Taylor County fifty years.

The funeral service was held in the Christian church here, at 1:00 o'clock, Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. D. Stevens, pastor of the Methodist church.

Francis Cundy of Sharpsburg sang three solos, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Meredith Walker of Gravity. The pallbearers were: Mark Young, Estle Parks, Earl Morgan, Leland Morgan, Merle Allen and Orval Bates.

Interment was in the Gravity cemetery.
