Bedford Times-Press Thursday January 19, 1967 p. 3 Mrs. Neil Seader, 42, Dies In Wyoming Funeral services for Mrs. Neil (Mary) Seader, 42, of Cheyenne, Wyo., were held January 5 at the Chapel of Chimes, in Cheyenne. Mrs. Seader died December 31, 1966. She is survived by her husband, Neil; daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Olive; three grandchildren, Karri, Kim, Kirk Olive; mother, Mrs. Sophia Cirksena, Cheyenne; three brothers, E. E. Cirksena and A. [dolph] F. Cirksena of Des Moines; William Cirksena of Canoga Park, Calif.; four sisters, Evelyn Edwards, Davenport, Ia.; Ruth Hamblin, Hopkins, Mo.; Alice Brockman, Cheyenne; Ada Cox, Lancaster, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Hamblin of Hopkins attended the services. [Susanna Elizabeth Mumford Hays] Bedford Free Press Wednesday April 4, 1917 [p. 1] Susanna Elizabeth Hayes Mrs. William Hayes [Hays] of Jackson Township died at her home Thursday [March 29], age 84 years, 3 months and 11 days. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the home by Rev. John A. Currie, of the Presbyterian Church. Interment was made in the Forest Grove Cemetery. Susanna Elizabeth Mumford was born in Athens County, Ohio, December 18, 1832. When six years of age, she came with her parents to Henry County, Iowa, and has resided in this state since that time. She was united in marriage with William Hayes [Hays], December 16, 1852. Ten children were born to this union, six daughters and four sons. The family came to Taylor County, Iowa, in 1856 and in 1864 settled upon the farm which continued to be her home until her death. For a period of fifty-three years, she resided at this place and during that time saw conditions wonderfully changed from what they were at the time of their settlement here. She united with the Methodist church at Forest Grove in 1879. Her husband and five children preceded her in death. Those now left to mourn her death are Mrs. W. [illiam] H. [oratio] Mitchell [Mary Jane], Parnell, Mo., Mrs. A. W. Forbes, Stanton, Nebr., Mrs. H. [enry] F. [rancis] Dunlavy [Nora], Mrs. E. [lias] A. [ndrew] Kemery [Ermina] and William Hayes, of Bedford, twenty-two grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, and one brother, B. F. Mumford, Parnell, Mo., and many relatives and friends. [BAXTER, MARY FRANCES SHELLABARGER] [HAYS, SUSANNA ELIZABETH MUMFORD] Bedford Times-Republican (Bedford, Iowa), Thursday, April 5, 1917 Death Saddens Two Homes in County Mrs. Hays and Mrs. Baxter Called to Beyond. Death claimed Mrs. Susanna Elizabeth Hays and Mrs. Charles W. Baxter since our last issue, saddening not only their homes but the hearts of a wide circle of acquaintances. Mrs. Hays had lived in Jackson township since 1864 and had watched the growth and progress of our community with infinite pride. She had enjoyed vigorous health until a few weeks before her death which occurred on March 29th and was caused by infirmities of old age, she being 84 years old. The funeral was held Sunday from the Presbyterian church, Rev. Currie officiating. Mrs. Baxter was 60 years of age and passed away on Saturday. She was well known in Bedford and vicinity and the bereaved ones have the sympathy of the entire neighborhood. Her funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon from the M. E. church, Rev. Goodwin officiating, and interment was made in the Gravity cemetery. Obituaries will be published next week. Kane County Chronicle, Geneva, Illinois Monday August 9, 2004 Laurel Glade 'L. G.' Smalley GENEVA -- Laurel Glade "L. G." Smalley, 83, of Geneva [Illinois], died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at his home. Born Sept. 3, 1920, in Bedford, Iowa, to Ralph Wilson Smalley and Leona Furl Weir Smalley, "L.G." was a patriotic and tireless worker who found time to be a kind and decent person, as well as a good father, loving grandfather and husband. He grew up on a farm in Iowa and learned to fly before World War II. He joined the Navy Cadets, but took his commission in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He was on active duty until late 1946, primarily as a fighter pilot in the South Pacific. He also served in the Korean War. In June 1947, he married Ruth Chelf. Later, he became partners in an agricultural aviation company that planted and fertilized crops from the air, as well as instructing student pilots. He later joined the Federal Aviation Administration retaining his Reserve duties. He retired from the Marines in 1980. "L. G." devoted his retirement years to accomplishing a multitude of projects and riding his motorcycle, as well as enjoying his grandson and building a home-built airplane. He was a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association for more than 50 years and a longtime member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Chicago Chapter of Quiet Birdsmen. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruth Chelf Smalley; two sons, Jack V. and James W. (Donna); a grandson, Noah James Smalley; two granddaughters, Katherine Megan (Scott) Campbell and Katelynn Anna Smalley; three great-granddaughters, Emma, Colleen and Mollie Campbell; a brother, Jean T. (Arlene) Smalley of Medford, Ore.; three sisters, Bethel (Sam) Adams of Rochester, Mo., Mary (David) Wood, of Ouray, Colo., and Patricia (R.E.) Jackson, of Central Point, Ore.; as well as many special nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 10, at the Yurs Wittenberg Funeral Home, 1771 W. State St., Geneva [Illinois]. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 11, at the Geneva United Methodist Church, 211 Hamilton St., Geneva. Bedford Times-Press Thursday January 27, 1966 p. 5 Sarah Starkey Rites, Jan. 22 Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Starkey, 84, long time Conway resident, were held at the Conway Methodist Church, January 22. Mrs. Starkey died January 18 at Tritt Rest Home in Leon. Interment was at Conway Cemetery. [Starkey, Sarah Hemmersbach] Bedford Times-Press Thursday February 3, 1966 p. 2 Sarah Starkey Rites Jan. 22 Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Starkey, 83, long time Conway resident, were held at the Conway Methodist Church January 22. Mrs. Starkey died January 18 at Tripp Rest Home in Leon. Interment was at Conway Cemetery. Sarah Hemmersbach Starkey was born Feb. 14, 1882 at Hannah City, in Peoria County, Illinois. Sarah Hemmersbach was the daughter of Adam Hemmersbach, who was born in Germany, and Elizabeth Zimmerman Hemmersbach, who was born at Lancaster, Penn. She was married to Dee Starkey Feb. 5, 1902 and spent most of her married life in and around Conway, Iowa. Mr. Starkey preceded her in death a number of years ago; also two brothers, William Hemmersbach and Pete Hemmersbach, and two sisters, Agnes Ryan and Ruth Nixon. Several nieces and nephews survive. Mrs. Starkey was a member of the Methodist church. Bedford Times-Press Thursday May 20, 1937 p. 7 Hold Last Rites For Mrs. A. H. Widner Funeral services for Mrs. A. [llen] H. Widner, who died at her home in Adrian, Mo., Friday morning, April 30, were held at the Adrian Baptist church the following Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Fred H. Terry. Burial was in the Crescent Hill cemetery. The death of Mrs. Widner was quite a shock to the community as it was quite sudden. She was up town the evening previous to her death. Her age at the time of death was 70 years, 8 months and 1 day. Amelia Elemore Brown, daughter of Isaac Henry and Margaret Brown, was born at Bedford, Iowa, August 29, 1866. She grew to womanhood in her native state. February 14, 1883, she was married to Allen H. Widner. To this union three children were born, two dying in infancy. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Rexroad, and one grandson, Perry Allen Rexroad. The Widner family moved from Iowa to Macon County, Missouri, in 1903, thence to Bates County in 1911, where they located on a farm at Crescent Hill. The family made their home there until the death of Mr. Widner several years ago. After the death of Mr. Widner, Mrs. Widner moved to Adrian, where she has since made her home. Mrs. Widner became a Christian in early life and united with the Baptist church of her home community. Her membership was taken to the Adrian church when they moved to Bates County, where she had been a faithful member and worker. She was a member of the Rebekah lodge for many years. Bedford Times-Press Thursday May 20, 1937 p. 7 Hold Last Rites For Mrs. Carrie Parker Funeral services for Mrs. Carrie Parker, who died Wednesday, May 12, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ward Roberts, were held at the Baptist church in New Market Friday afternoon, May 14, conducted by Rev. W. H. Hoge, pastor of the Bedford Baptist church. Burial was in the Memory cemetery. Carrie E. Cook, daughter of Edward and Mary M. Cook, was born at Michigan City, Ind., April 4, 1857, and was aged 79 years, 1 month and eight days, at the time of her death. She was married to Lige Parker, August 29, 1875, at Clarinda, Iowa. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Ward Roberts, with whom she has lived for some time, and from whose home she passed to her reward after quite a long period of failing strength. She leaves to mourn her departure also, one grandson, Ward Roberts, Jr., and a foster daughter, Mrs. Clayton Douglas, of Shenandoah. Also there is a sister-in-law, Mrs. Kate Cooke of New Market, whom she loved as a sister. There are a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Parker was a Christian woman, having become a Christian and united with the Old School Presbyterian Church when she was still quite young. Most of her church activities, however, have been as she was associated with the Baptist people at New Market and at Bedford. She has been missed in these church circles during these days of her failing strength, and now that she is gone her loss will be keenly felt. |
