Backman, Darrell –

Word was received on Monday by Mrs. M. E. Parkhurst of the death of her nephew, Mr. Darrell Backman, second son of Ralph Backman of Pittsburg, Penn.  Darrell was hurt in an auto accident early on June 30^th and died at 11:45 that same day.  His automobile lights failed on a curve and the car plunged down an embankment, pinning him beneath.  His companion was thrown from the car and escaped uninjured.

Darrell was born near Mt. Ayr, Iowa on the 10^th of April, 1914,  Later the family moved to a farm near Clearfield, living in this community until 1920, and then moving to Pittsburg.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Backman and his three brothers.

Bicknell, Catherine -

Mrs. Thomas Bicknell died on Saturday, April 13th, at her home in Kansas City, Mo., aged eighty nine years. The body was bro't here on Monday for burial in the Clearfield Cemetery, near husband and other relatives.

The Bicknells came to this vicinity in 1879 and resided here until about 1896 and for some years after that lived in or near Lenox —and most of our older residents will remember Mrs. Bicknell and the family. Mrs. Jennie Lyddon is a niece of the deceased. Mr. Frank Bicknell, a son, was a caller at this office on Monday, and gave us some details about his mother’s life and the manner of its ending. Her last Illness for just one week.

Cooper, Margaret I. Carhahan –

Margaret I. Carnahan, daughter of H. H. and Matilda Carnahan was born at Malugina Grove in Illinois August 14, 1861 and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Adam Keller on, June 21, 1935 aged 78 years 10 months and 7 days.

She grew to womanhood near West Brooklyn, Illinois and was married to Albert J. Cooper on Feb. 22, 1882 and came to Iowa that spring. To this union were born three children:—Mrs. Adam Keller, J. Edwin Cooper, and Walter Leslie, who died in infancy.

As s young woman she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and remained a faithful member. She was a charter member of Greenwood Church, and very active there until 1912, six years after the death of her husband, when she moved into Conway. After living in Conway four years, she came to Clearfield where she has since made her home, being active in the Foreign Missionary Society, and very faithful in attendance at Sunday school and the worship services.

She spent the most of the winter with her son, J. Edwin Cooper, and since March 15th, had been with her daughter, Mrs. Adam Keller. She had not been well since the first of the year—and had been in bed since the 16th of April.

She leaves to mourn her passing: her daughter and son; five brothers, C. H, Carnahan of Sioux City, H. S. Carnahan of Long Beach, Calif., Clyde Carnahan of Cherokee, Iowa, Walter Carnahan of Minnesota, Will Carnahan of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; one sister, Mrs. C. I. Eddy, of Sibley, Iowa; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held in the Clearfield Methodist church, at 2:00 on Sunday, June 23. The house was filled with friends and neighbors. Pastor J. C. Turner conducted the service. Singing was by six young ladies, Mr. E. C. Beaton giving one number.  There were beautiful flowers many of them picked and arranged by friends from the best in their own gardens. Pallbearers were C. J. Swan, Marion Palmer, W. A. McKinstry, A. J. Abarr, Clyde Cooper, L. H. Andrews. Interment was in the Conway cemetery, by the husband who passed away in 1906

Dowlin, Jessie Hartley -

Mrs. J. G. Dowlin, nee Hartley, a life-long resident of east Gay township died Feb. 28^th at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. E. Rich, in Des Moines, after a long illness.

She is survived by her husband, her son John Dowlin, of Compton, California, two daughters, Mrs. H. E. Rich of Des Moines and Virginia Dowlin of Shenandoah; also three grandchildren Jack and Ann Dowlin and Herbert Rich.  J. S. Hartley of Mingo, Iowa and Hugh Hartley of Blockton are brothers; Mrs. Harry Worthington of Bedford and Mrs. J. O. Steen are sisters, and three sisters live at greater distances and were not present at the funeral.

Services were conducted at the home at 2:30 on Sunday, by Rev. E. E. Stringfellow of Des Moines, a former pastor. Those coming from a distance included J. S. Hartley and family of Mingo, H. E. Rich and family of Des Moines, lola H. Nelson of Davenport, and Hope and Rachel Worthington, of Des Moines.

Mrs. Dowlin lived for all her married life on the same farm that was the Hartley family home in her younger years.

Ferris, Charles -

Charles Ferris was born at Hamilton, Canada, Sept. 15, 1850 and passed away on February 6, 1935, aged 84 years, 4 months, 21 days. When about 5 years old, be moved to Kewanee, Illinois.

He United with the Methodist Episcopal Church when a small boy at Galva, Illinois, where his membership remained throughout his lifetime.

In October of 1876, at Ottumwa, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Jennie Brown, and to this union were born eight children. His wife died in May, 1923, and two daughters, Mrs. Charles Shepard and Mrs. B. B. White, also preceded him in death.

He moved to Talmage in 1900, and resided there until 12 years ago when he came to the home of his daughter south of Clearfield, where he has since made his home—with the exception of visits with other daughters, and with the son.

He leaves to mourn his death, five daughters: — Mrs. H. W. Davis of Ottumwa, Iowa; Mrs. C. C. Beatty of Clearfield; Mrs. Fred Whiteman of Afton; Mrs. J. A. Ransom of St. Joseph, Mo.; Mrs. W. V. White of Des Moines; his son J. W. Ferris of Des Moines; many grandchildren, other relatives and friends

Funeral services were held on Saturday at 11 a. m. at the Beatty farm home. Pastor John C. Turner of Clearfield Methodist Church conducted the service The party proceeded to Talmage where there was a brief public service, followed by interment in the Otterban Cemetery near that town.

Fowler, Mima Ruth Vanwy-

Mrs. Mima Ruth Fowler was born near West Alexander, in Washington county, Penn., and passed away at her home, Clearfield, Iowa, June 6, 1935. At her next birthday, Sept. 16th, she would have been 84. Her parents were Alexander and Nancy Ruth.

She was married to George Vanwy and after his death was married to J. W, Fowler, Oct. 4, 1893 Rev. Huber Herring officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Fowler then came to their home in Clearfield.

In early girlhood she became a member of the Presbyterian faith and so remained. In her quiet way, she was known for many acts of charity. She was a daily reader of the bible.

She is survived by two brothers J. P. Ruth of West Alexander, Pa , and J. N. Ruth who has been with her in her last years; two  nephews,—Donald Ruth of Swissvale, Pa., Charles Murray of Washington, Pa.; two nieces, Mrs. Frances Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio, Dessie Morrison of West Alexander, Pennsylvania. Her many friends mourn her passing.

Funeral services were held at the residence, on Saturday, 2:00 p. m., conducted by the pastor Rev. H. B. Hutchman, assisted by Rev. J. C. Turner. Singing was by a quartet, Mrs. J. M. Stephenson, Mrs. Myrta Young, Mr. E. C. Heaton, and J. R. Crew.  Interment was in the Clearfield Cemetery.

Franklin, Nancy Deaver -

Nancy Deaver, daughter of John S. and Mary Deaver, was born in Deavertown, Ohio, October 2,1856, and passed away at her home in Clearfield, April 10, 1935, aged seventy-eight years, six months, and eight days.

She was the youngest of twelve and all the other had preceded her in death.

Mr Deaver was a circuit rider for the United Brethren Church, and his daughter Nancy often accompanied him on his long drives. She began teaching while she was quite young, and taught for a number of years.

On March 30,1876, at Quincy, Iowa, she was united in marriage to William H. Franklin, who was called away in 1925. To this union were born four children:—a son who died in infancy; a daughter, Mrs. Blanche Anderson, who died at Ashland, Nebraska, July 27, 1921. Ralph Franklin, of Hardin, Montana; and Mrs. Belle Anderson of Clearfield, with whom she made her home. In addition to her children, she leaves to mourn her loss thirteen grandchildren,

and several nephews and nieces in whom she was always very much interested.

Reared in a Christian home, she always stood for everything honorable and upright. Her chief thought was for the church and its welfare. She was an active worker in the Foreign Missionary Society, and delighted in enlisting others to work for that cause.

On her last Sunday she attended all the services—the Sabbath School class, and morning and evening services. The participation the evening service and greeted her friends in her usual kindly, friendly way.

She was always kind and sympathetic, interested always In other people, their joys and their sorrows.  In losing this loved one, the son and daughter have lost a devoted mother; the grandchildren a loving grandmother and the community a good friend and neighbor.

Funeral services were held in Clearfield, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. C. Turner, assisted by Rev, H.B. Hutchman. The church was filled to capacity by friends and neighbors. Interment was in the Clearfield Cemetery.

Ginn, Dale -

Dale Ginn. a boy of 12 years, living northeast of Gravity was instantly killed last Sunday evening when a gun was accidentally discharged while held by his brother Thomas, 16 years old. The two boys had been hunting ground squirrels, and coming home at dusk were seen to be unloading and loading the gun.  It was fired and Dale was in line and was killed.  No inquest was held at the request of the family.  There are five other children in the Ginn family.

Hawthorne, Sarah Emma Miller –

Mrs. Crate Hawthorne, a resident of Fort Morgan for 29 years, died at her home there on Thursday evening, Feb. 21^st, aged 67  years.  Death followed an illness of several years, though she was not confined to her bed until two weeks previous to her death.

She is survived by four daughters, all married and living at Fort Morgan, Colo. They are Mrs. Hazel McLagan, Mrs. Lee Meekins, Mrs. Ruth McKee, and Mrs. Luella Snodgrass. The son, Homer, died two years ago, .and Mrs. Bernice Hawthorne lives at Logan, Indiana. She leaves four grand-children.

Sarah Emma Miller was born near Humboldt, Iowa, Feb. 15, 1868. Shu attended normal and was a teacher. She married Wm. Craton Hawthorne on Jan. 1, 1883, in Clearfield. And lived here until 1906, when the family moved out to Fort Morgan in March. The husband died in Oct. of 1925.

Mrs. Hawthorne was a member of the United Presb. Church and until her illness was an active worker in the Sabbath school and church.

Funeral services were held Saturday, and interment was in Riverside Cemetery, at Fort Morgan.

Many Clearfield people will remember Mrs. Hawthorne. She was an aunt of Mrs. Pearl Stephenson, the step-mother of Mrs. Sam Spurrier of Mount Ayr; her parents were Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Miller, old residents here.

Ilers, Ernest -

On last week Thursday, Supt. Ernest Ilers died at Aurora, III., after an operation. Mr. Ilers was Supt. of Clearfield schools in the year 1907-8. Dissensions in teaching force, forced wholesale change at end of year. He was personally popular, and went to Montezuma from Clearfield, and then to Knoxville, and to Wisconsin. Aurora, where his educational career ends, has nearly 50,000 population.

Two sisters, Edna and Vesta Ilers reside in Des Moines and teach in the city schools. Vesta was in Clearfield with her brother, we think. Supt. Ilers attended Drake and Chicago Universities. He leaves a wife and three children.

Jenkins, Eliza Isadora Golder -

Eliza Isadora Golder was born on April 10,1842, in Woodstock, Illinois. She passed away March 6, 1935 at Colville, Washington, at the home of her daughter, Ella Golder, aged nearly 93 years.

She moved with her parents at the age of eight years to Sterling, III. She was married to Mr. Lewis C. Jenkins in 1862. To the union, ten children were born, of whom six are still living:—Wm. A. Jenkins, of Rockport, Missouri; Lottie Bowen-Emmitt of San Angelo, Texas; Ella Golder, Colville, Wash.; Robert Jenkins, of Douglas, Wyo.; Lewis Jenkins of Helena, Arkansas; and Mrs. Alice

Creekmore, Amarillo, Texas. She has eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

She was the last of her fathers family to go hence.  In  1880, she moved  with her family to a farm in Gay Township, Taylor county, Iowa, where they resided for about a quarter century.  They then made their home in Clearfield until about 5 years after her husband's death in August, 1920. Since that time she has made her home with Mr and Mrs. John F. Golder, where she was at the time of her death.

Mrs. Jenkins was always a consistent Christian, loving her church next to her God and her family. She had been a member of the M. E. Church of Clearfield for many years.

The body was brought back to Iowa and to Clearfield that its final rest might be in the family lot in Clearfield Cemetery.  Funeral services were held in the Methodist church, at 2:00 on Monday, March 11th, conducted by the Rev. John C. Turner.  Beautiful flowers  attested the love of relatives and friends. Singing was by a quartet—Mrs. J. M. Stephenson, Mrs. A. J. Abarr, Messrs. E. C. Heaton and L. H. Andrews. Pallbearers were L. H. Andrews, U. S. Grant, J. E. Duncan. Alpha Clark, J. A. Cochran, Joe Cooper and H. 0. Calkin.

Lyddon, George -

George Lyddon, son of John and Hanna Lyddon, was born in Warren county, Illinois, February 21, 1849, und died at his home southwest of Clearfield, Iowa, March 15, 1935, aged 86 years, 1 month and 13 days.

On November 9th, 1874 he was married to Jennie Bicknell. To this union were given seven children, Delbert Eugene, Maude Gertrude, Lee Ellsworth, and Iva Pearl; and three that died in infancy.

After his marriage, he lived for four years near Alexis, Illinois and then moved to Iowa.  They lived for one year ½ mile south of Clearfield on the county line and then moved to the present home, were he has lived for 55 years. He was the last of a family of three sisters and six brothers.

He leaves to mourn his death, his wife who has stood by his side for sixty years, two daughters, two sons, two grand-daughters Helen and Hilda Lyddon, and three grandsons. Ralph, Richard, and Dean, whom he cherished  very dearly. Also many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the home at 2:00 on Sunday, conducted by Rev. Philip Nystrand, assisted by Rev. J. C. Turner. Music was by Mrs. Will Williams, Joe Barrans, J. R. Crew and Don Green.  The pallbearers were six nephews: Ned, Harry, John and Orville Lyddon, George and Chas. Cheese. The interment was in Clearfield Cemetery.

McFarland, William -

Rev. William McFarland was born in Pennsylvania, July 23, 1853, and died at the home of one of his daughters at Earlham, Iowa February 2nd, 1935, aged 81 years, 6 months, and 4 days.

He married Mary Reynolds of Ringgold County about 62 years ago.  Six girls and two boys came to bless their home and all were able to be at the funeral.

Mr. McFarland was one of a family of six boy and six girls. He in survived by his six daughters and two sons und their families; two sisters, Mrs. Etta Stephenson of Clearfield and Mrs. Maggie Shields of Maloy; and a number of nephews and nieces, and a host of other relatives und friends.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal Church at Benton, la,. Tuesday afternoon, February 5th. Rev. W.D. Merryman a Nazarene minister of Des Moines officiated, assisted by the Nazarene pastor Rev. A. K. Jones of Allerton, Ia.

He was laid to rest beside his wife who preceded him in death 2 years ago, in the Benton Cemetery.

Mercer, Ralph James -

Ralph James Mercer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Mercer, who live down in Gay township, died Saturday afternoon, aged seven years, three month, and seventeen days. He had been ill for two years or more with an ailment that would not yield to treatment. Services were held Monday afternoon at the church in Athelstan, Rev. Garrett of Conway preaching. Interment was in the cemetery at Athlestan.

Norman, Delphine Louise Peltier

Delphine Louise Peltier, daughter of Charles M. and Ellen U. Peltier, was born and grew to womanhood near Clearfield, la.

She was a graduate of Clearfield High School, and taught in the rural schools of Taylor Co. She moved with her parents to Lenox, Iowa. During her residence in Lenox she was married to Dr. F. J, Norman.

They resided for several years n Lenox, then for eight years in Spencer, Iowa, and for the past three years in Des Moines.

She passed away at the home in Des Moines, on Friday, March 29th, 1935.  She leaves to mourn her going: her husband, Dr. F. J. Norman, and her daughter, Elizabeth Louise Norman; two sisters, Mrs. H. S. Ash of Bedford, and Mrs W. K. Patterson, Guthrie, Oklahoma —one brother, C. F. Peltier, of Clearfield, Iowa; several nieces and nephews, and a large number of friends.

Funeral services wore conducted on Sunday afternoon, March 31, 1935, at the Arnold Funeral Home in Lenox, Iowa. Interment was in Lenox Cemetery.

Saunders, Joe -

Joe Saunders, 39, a farmer living near No. 34 west of Creston, was killed Sunday night when an auto driven by Marvin Thiele of Creston crashed into his wagon from the rear. Saunders had driven but a short distance to get and bring home his son of seven, who had been visiting with neighbors. The boy was unhurt, and Thiele not severely. A second auto came along and crashed into the wreckage, but its driver was not injured.

Shimer, Amanda Olive Snider -

Amanda Olive Shimer was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Snider, born May 23, 1862, died at the home of her daughter, Margaret A. White, May 3, 1935, at the age of 72 years, 11 months and 5 days. She united with the Methodist E. Church in Chesterfield, Indiana, in early life. In February, 1880, she was united in married to Albert S. Shimer.  To this union were born five children, two of whom preceded her in death — Della E. Shinier, Nov. 23. 1918, and Guss C. Shimer, Nov. 28, 1918. Her husband Albert Shimer also preceded her in death on July 5, 1924. Mr and Mrs. Shimer moved from Indiana to Mo., and three years later to Clearfield, where she spent 26 years of her life. Her last days were spent at the home of her daughter. She had a host of friends, and was well thought of by all who knew her.

She leaves to mourn her loss—three children: Clark M. Shimer, Huntington Beach, Calif., Margret A. S. White of Conway, and Albert S. Shimer of Bedford, 9 grandchildren, Mrs. Ella Tisconnia,  Mrs. Mary Garrison. Mrs. Alberta Archie and Miss Lola Aida, all of California; Johnny Shimer ot Creston; Ellsworth White of Conway; Guss, Delia & Lea Shimer of Bedford. Four great grand children

Funeral services were held on Tuesday and interment was in Lenox.

Singer, Nellie Fidelia -

Nellie F. Singer was born in Davenport, Iowa, June 23, 1865 and departed this life at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Allie Cowall in Clearfield, Iowa, Jan. 5, 1935, at the age of 69 years, 6 months and 12 days.

She has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church since 9 years of age and worked in the Sunday School and church choir of Clearfield for 21 years.

On Sept. 2nd 1885 she was united in marriage to L U. Singer. Two sons and a daughter were born to this union, the daughter dying in infancy.  She leaves to mourn her departure her two sons Orville and Harry of Washington D. C. One sister, Mrs Bryd Ells of Los Angeles, Calif., One foster grand-daughter, two nieces and four nephews and many friends. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Sunday afternoon at 2:30. The service was conducted by Rev. John C. Turner, who spoke from the subject suggested by Mrs. Singer, "God is Love". The choir sang, "Lead Kindly Light" and "Sun of My Soul". Messrs, Heaton and J. R. Crew, Mrs. Crew and Mrs. Anderson singing, with Mrs. Frank Ewalt at the piano.  Pallbearers were L. E. Hartman, U. S. Grant, Truman Hidlay, Joe Barrans , J. 0. Beatty and C. B.

Many friends and former neighbors attended, filling the church.  Interment was in Clearfield Cemetery in the family lot, where lies the bodies of Dr. Singer and of the infant daughter.

Soma, Bertha Mary Nelson -

Bertha Mary Nelson was born in Sylling Lier, Norway, near what was then Christiana, now Oslo,  on August 12 of 1856, and passed away Saturday morning, January 12th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Herring in Clearfield, at the age of 78 years.

She came with her younger brother, Henry to the United State at the age of twenty years to Philadelphia, then on the  train to Chicago. From Chicago they came to Essex, Iowa where they resided for several years, then came to Gravity.  In 1881, the sister came to Clearfield and spent two years, returning then to Gravity where she was married in 1894 to Thorwalk Soma, also a native of Norway.

To this union were born seven children, three of whom survive their parents. They moved to Clearfield in 1887, and here the husband passed away Marsh 24, 1923. Since 1887, Mrs. Soma has resided in her home here—and has  never once been away from her home town overnight, the house, having been moved from where they resided in West Clearfield to its present site near the Park in 1883.

She loved her home, and was a good kind mother; a true friend, a real neighbor, always ready to do  for others whenever opportunity offered. She was a member of the Lutheran Church in Norway, and united with the Clearfield Methodist Church, attending its services faithfully while health permitted, being especially fond of the missionary society and was always ready to do her full share of its work.  She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She leaves to mourn her loss her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Herring of Clearfield, her two sons, John of Quincy, Illinois and Fred of Bedford, Iowa, fourteen grandchildren.  Also her brother Henry, 76 years old, of Irvington, Alabama; other relatives and many friends.

The funeral. service was held in the Methodist Church on Monday day after-noon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. John C. Turner. Her favorite hymns were sung by the quartette. Mrs. A. S. Conaway, Mrs. E. E. Vogel, E. C. Beaton and Lyle J. McKelvey. Interment was in Clearfield Cemetery.

Stanton, Mrs. Arch -

About ten days since, Mrs.  Ida V. Getz closed up her home here and went to Peoria, Illinois, to which place her daughter, Mrs. Arch Stanton and family had gone last year. She expected to be there indefinitely. But Mrs Stanton was dead, after an illness of a few hours, as word came here Monday morning. The funeral was here on Wednesday, at 2:00 p. m. Methodist church. She leaves the husband and one child, about five years of age. Mrs. Joe Clarey is her sister, Gladys.

Swope, Henry Thornton -

Mr. H. T. Swope, resident of Clearfield for fifty years and engaged in business on our Broadway nearly all of the time, died at his home at 11:20 on Monday, after a prolonged illness in which strength gradually failed.  He was the last survivor of the men who made the Clearfield of the eighties, and stayed here until the end.  He had attained the age of eighty one years.

Henry Thomas Swope, oldest son of Woodson and Mary Swope was born in Sulphur Springs, Henry County, Indiana February 3, 1857 and passed away at his home in Clearfield, Iowa, April 21, 1935 at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 19 days.  When he was about nine years old the family moved to near Bethany, Missouri and later to Kansas City, Kansas.

In 1871 he came to Adams County, Iowa and after a short stay returned to Kansas where he resided until 1874, when he came to Ringgold County, Iowa.  On December 17^th, 1895 he was united in marriage to Mary Perkins of Clearfield and here they have resided ever since.  To  this union were born five children, three sons, Granville, Orville, and David all dying in infancy.  His wife, one son, Woodson L. and one daughter, Lena L. Stewart survive, also the son-in-law, F. P. Stewart, two grandchildren, one brother, W. A. Swope of Zenda, Kansas, nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.

For several years Mrs. Swope was in the harness business in Clearfield, then in the Produce Business, and in January of 1893 became postmaster and continued in that capacity for thirteen and a half years.  In July 1911 he again went into the Produce Business and continued in it until four years ago when poor health forced him to retire.

He was a charter member of the Clearfield Church of Christ and for  a number of years Bible School Superintendent and teacher of a Bible class.  He was an earnest Christian, a loving husband and father, and a friend to all and always ready to do a kindly deed wherever opportunity offered.  He had filed various positions of trust and responsibility in the town, especially in its earlier days, and will be greatly missed in the community which has known him so long.

He had been a member of the Masonic Order for fifty years.

Funeral services were held in the Church of Christ at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon.  Rev. P. O. Nystrand conducting, assisted by Rev. H. B. Hutchman.  The Masonic ceremony was also used at both church and cemetery.

Thompson, Chas. R. -

The funeral of the late Chas. R. Thompson, long-time resident of Platte Township, was held on Saturday afternoon, in the Lenox Methodist church, and interment was in Lenox Cemetery. Mr. Thompson was born in December of 1868, and was thus about 66 years and 5 months old at the lime of his death, which occurred on the afternoon of the 8th of May. Mrs. Thompson was a Bennett—and is a sister of Mr. George Bennett.

Neighbors and friends join in expressions of sorrow and sympathy for the bereaved wife and other relatives.  There are no living children.

Whitmore, Emily Viola Drey Flannigan  -

Emily Viola Drey, daughter of Peter and Rosella Drey, was born on March 30, 1899, at Beresford, South Dakota, and passed away at the Community Hospital, in Creston, Iowa, on Tuesday, April 30,1935, aged 37 years and one month.

In 1916 she was united in marriage to Sidney Flannigan. To this union was born one daughter Claudine.   In 1930 to Philip Whitmore—and they have made their home in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Mrs. Whitmore was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.  She had at times traveled extensively visiting nearly every state in the union, and made two voyages to Europe. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.

The husband and the daughter Claudine; the parents, Mr. & Mrs. Peter Drey, of San Francisco, Cal.; three sisters, Mrs. Helen DuVoyle of Sioux Falls, Mrs. Ed Butters of Florida, and Mrs. Lila Leigh Hunt of California; three brothers, Claude. Elmer and Ross —all residing in California; and friends in a great number mourn her passing.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 2^nd in Clearfield Christian Church, conducted by the pastor Rev. Phillip Nystrand.  The Eastern Star memorial service was given at the church.  Interment was in Clearfield Cemetery.

Wilson, James Given -

James Given Wilson was born in Washington county, Iowa, on January 23,1866. He died at his home between Clearfield and Lenox, on Friday, January 25, 1935, being aged 69 years and 2 days.

 He was the son of John B. and Ellen Wilson.  They came to Taylor, Iowa in the early days. James united with the United Presbyterian Church of Lenox, and later joined the Clearfield Methodist Episcopal Church.

On March 2, 1892, he was united in marriage to Miss Elda Willcox, and to this union three children were born: Beulah, who died in Clearfield in 1914; Velma, Mrs. Loyd Grant of Guthrie Center; and Leo who is at home. There are three grandchildren. L Banks Wilson, Cleone and Betty Jean Grant. In addition to these children and grandchildren, he leaves his devoted wife, a sister Mrs. John Willcox, and five brothers —David D., Ei, [?] Tom, Harve and Rob, all of near Lenox. A sister, Mrs. Lizzie McClintock, is deceased, He leaves also many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held in Clearfield Methodist church on Sunday the 27th. The pastor, Rev. J. C. Turner, conducted the service, assisted by Rev. H. B. Hutchman. Singing was by four young ladies. The pallbearers were young men, relatives of the deceased. Interment was had in the cemetery at Lenox.

Worthington, Loretta Mix -

Mrs. James Worthington of Maloy died on Tuesday in a hospital. She had gone there for an operation, from which she did not recover. Mrs. Worthington was Loretta Mix, a daughter of the late W. P. Mix, and of Mrs. Mix now of Denver. She grew up on the farm southwest a few miles. The funeral is at 10 a.m. today, at the Catholic Church in Maloy.
