JAMES LARRY HIGGINS
Funeral services for James Larry Higgins were held at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 1986. Rev. Jim Miller and Rev. Ted DeHass were the ministers. Burial was at the Gravity cemetery.
James Larry Higgins, son of Lowell and Irene, was born at Iowa City, Iowa, on August 12, 1936, and departed this life on November 22, 1986 at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 50 years, three months and 10 days.
"Larry" as he was known to his family and friends, attended various public schools in Iowa. He became a member of the Christian Church before moving to Colorado where he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served in the Air Force from 1955 to 1958.
Only July 1, 1960, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Moore at Clarinda, Iowa. Most of the past 26 years have been spent in the Gravity and Bedford communities. He was blessed with the love of seven children: Sharon, David, Kathy, D.D., Bonnie, Steven, and Stacey.
Larry was a millwright by trade but eventually fulfilled his dream of owning and operating his own repair shop. At the time of his death, he was employed by Lauren Contractors of Atlanta, Georgia and was a member of the Millwright Local Union #1463. Larry enjoyed his work very much. Whether it be helping to construct a new power plant or fixing the starter on someone's car he always enjoyed the challenge of making things work. He derived a great joy from making things from pieces no one else could seem to use. In short, he was a handyman extraordinaire.
Larry was preceded in death by his father Lowell; one brother, Wayne; and a step-sister, Faye Arlene Warrick.
Left to cherish his memory are his mother and stepfather, Irene and Leslie Hancock of Canon City, Colorado; his wife Kathryn; his seven children and their spouses: Sharon and Larry Burns of Canon City, Colorado; David and Nancy Higgins of Gravity, Iowa; Kathy and Ralph Knauss of Tampa, Florida; D. D. Higgins of Daytona Beach, Florida; Bonnie and Mike Scroggie of Blockton, Iowa; Steve Higgins of the home; and Stacey Higgins of Bedford. He is also survived by one sister and her husband, Carolyn and Ted Hill of Fresno, Calif.; three brothers and their spouses: Stanley and Joyce of Griswald, Iowa; Phillip of Canon City, Colorado; Bill and Patricia of Canon City, Colorado. Also Larry is survived by two step-brothers and their wives: Larry and Justene Martin of Gravity, Iowa and Dick and Dee Martin of Omaha, Nebraska. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. Larry enjoyed the love of his 14 grandchildren: Jason, Justin, Joshua and Joels Burns, of Canon City, Colorado; Michelle, Terry and Melinda Higgins of Gravity, Iowa; Amy, Angie and Max Knauss of Tampa, Florida; Sarah Marie Scroggie of Blockton, Iowa; and Amanda Marie Higgins of Bedford, Iowa.
Possibly the greatest love in Larry's life, other than his family, was music. He enjoyed nothing more than playing for people and singing his country, bluegrass, and gospel songs. Performing was not a chore but rather recreation, and the joy he felt while doing so provided a warmth to all around. Like a campfire on a cold autumn night he could soothe even the harshest of chills through song.

Kenneth Laverne Moore
Kenny Moore was born August 13, 1926 in Gravity, Iowa to Edward and Mary Moore. He died on April 9, 1996 in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 69 years.
Kenny grew up on the farm with his one brother Dean. There were hard times on the farm but there were also good times spent with aunts and uncles and their families. Family get-togethers were important joy filled with plenty of good food shared.
Kenny met Naomi in the summer of 1944 and on June 2, 1945 they were married in Kansas City, Kansas. When they returned home, Kenny continued to farm with his dad.
From 1952-1954 Kenny was called to serve his country in the Korean War.
1957 was a very good year for Kenny and Naomi, their son Kelly was born on March 27, and he was the joy of their life.
In 1961 Kenny and Naomi decided to go into business for themselves and the bought the Western Auto Associate Store in Bedford and for twenty-two years they ran that store. A lot of people will remember that Kenny would open the store whenever they needed anything. If you were working on a project and it was midnight, Kenny would get out of bed and open the store so you could get what you needed. That is just the way he was, no grumbling, he wanted to serve, not only a customer, but a friend.
In 1964 Kenny became a substitute rural mail carrier, and started carrying a full time route in 1979, and ended up carrying mail for twenty six years, retiring November 1, 1988.
After retiring Kenny built flower beds, put out climbing roses, planted iris, peonies, and other flowers. He always had lots of comments about how beautiful his yard and flowers were. He loved the outdoors, he loved to work with wood, and most people will remember his fantastic Christmas displays of Santa Claus, reindeer and sleigh with lights at Christmas time.
People will remember Kenny as a wonderful man who was jolly, giving and happy. He was a great father, husband, friend, business man. Active with the fire department, the American Legion and the Chamber of Commerce. He was always willing to help, and loved his family dearly.
Kenny will be remembered and missed by his wife Naomi, son Kelly, daughter-in-law Janice, grandchildren Kristen and Kevin, brother Dean, and many friends, Kenny's life was a gift to all who knew him, not to one or two, but to many.
