Ackley, Nancy Diane Orme - Celebration of Life Funeral Services for Nancy Ackley will be held Sunday, January 3, 2021 at 2 PM at Cummings Family Funeral Home. Nancy Diane (Orme) Ackley, 72, of Bedford, Iowa, passed from this life and went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 28th, 2020.

Nancy was born in Clarinda, Iowa, April 17th, 1948, to Marvin and Arlene (Hanson) Orme of Guss. She attended Skinner Country School, and graduated from New Market High School in 1966. Upon high school graduation, she attended Des Moines School of Cosmetology. While in high school, she met the love of her life, Paul Ackley, through a mutual friend. Paul and Nancy were married on April 22nd, 1967. The newlyweds lived six months in Rineyville, KY, while Paul was assigned to a training brigade headquarters unit at Fort Knox. When Paul was transferred to Vietnam, Nancy moved back to southwest Iowa and worked at Dorothy’s Beauty Shop in Clarinda. When Paul was discharged from the Army in 1969, they moved to the farm south of Bedford and began raising hogs, cattle and row crops. Nancy loved working along side Paul, building, fixing, mending, organizing, and keeping things running on the Farm and in the household.

Nancy and Paul were blessed with four daughters, Shelly, Donnette, Carla and Sarah.

Nancy was an active 4-H member while growing up and later served as a 4-H leader. She brought life lessons to her children through leadership in 4-H, school, and on the farm. She enjoyed the neighborhood gatherings with good friends. She took great pleasure in caring for numerous hired hands employed throughout the years on the farm –nurturing and feeding them.

Nancy loved to sew and learned at a young age. Her dad would challenge her to guess what the livestock would bring at market, and if she was within range, he would use part of the money to buy her fabric. Her dad would reflect, “I’d bring the material (fabric) home, and she would have a new skirt or dress put together before supper.” When Nancy’s girls were young, she would make matching holiday outfits for them. On occasion, she was also known to whip up a costume for school or Halloween, and remodeled a formal dress or two in her time. She turned her love of sewing into a business for a few years, making and selling Cabbage Patch Kid dolls.

Nancy enjoyed her daughters’ slumber parties, birthday parties and celebrations as much as the girls and their friends did. She met these with a smile and quiet determination and was often referred to as, “Momma Ackley” by her daughters’ friends.

Through the years, she helped to keep the farm operation running, by doing the books, sorting hogs, moving cattle, or planting, alongside Paul – doing whatever needed to be done. As the girls grew up, and their farm operation expanded, she took on less of the outside chores, and eagerly chased after her girls, running errands for Paul, and helping with various 4-H projects. Nancy kept the road hot shuttling kids and projects in the yellow Ford Econoline van known as the “Activity Bus”.
In 2000, Nancy took on a part-time job working at Stockwell CPA office in Bedford. She enjoyed her time at the office with the ladies. She especially enjoyed helping clientele organize their records and renewing the personal acquaintances.

Nancy had a very “green thumb”, and could grow anything in her big garden. She would can much of her harvest, and kept her flower beds lush.

Nancy was happiest traveling along side Paul to see their grown children and grandchildren, or to attend a cover crop field day or seminar. When Paul and Nancy became grandparents, Nancy took her role as “Nana” very seriously. Taking breaks from the farm, she found great joy in spending time with her grand kids, running them to their many activities, and entertaining them after school.

She was the “Wind Beneath Our Wings”.

Left to cherish her memory, are her husband Paul, daughters Shelly Longfellow (Bedford, IA), Donnette Wilson (Stillwater, OK), Carla Ackley (Bedford, IA) and Sarah Ackley (Lake St. Louis, MO). Grandchildren: Cash Wilson (Douglas, OK), Rylan Wilson (Stillwater, OK) and Joslyn Longfellow (Bedford, IA). Brother, Ronald Orme (Shenandoah, IA), nephew, Todd Orme (Cedar Rapids, IA), and niece, Teresa Orme (Shenandoah, IA).

Preceding Nancy in death were her parents, Arlene and Marvin Orme; in-laws Lou and Wilda Ackley; sister-in-law, Rozella Orme.

Albright, Ricky Michael "Mike" - Visitation for Mike Albright, age 67, will be held Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at Cummings Family Funeral Home from 5 PM until 7 PM.

Ricky Michael Albright was born December 2, 1952 to Howard Leroy Albright and Mildred (Ulmer) Albright Beauchamp. Mike's father passed away when he was very young and was raised by his mother and step-father, Dean Beauchamp. Mike grew up in the Hopkins and Bedford area and graduated Bedford high school in 1972. During his high school years Mike excelled in athletics, a love of which continued throughout his life.

Mike married Viola Milburn on January 18, 1975. To this union two children, Matt and Carly, were born. The couple later divorced.

On August 9, 1999 Mike married, the love of his life, Renee Hawn. The couple resided in Bedford, with Renee's two daughters, Jessica and Jennifer. Mike retired from Burlington Northern Santa Fe after 35 years of dedicated service.

Mike was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Bedford Bulldog fan. He kept score for both the Lady Bulldogs softball and basketball teams through the years. Mike enjoyed playing slow pitch softball after high school. Other hobbies Mike enjoyed were playing cards at the Legion everyday and sharing his wit and sense of humor with others. Mike especially loved his kids, grandchildren and family. He always enjoyed spending time and visiting with them.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Mildred; step-father Dean; and brother, Donnie. Left to cherish Mike are his wife, Renee Albright of Bedford, Iowa; son, Matt Albright of Gladstone, Missouri; daughter, Carly Keller of Independence, Missouri; grandchildren, Collin, Victoria, Keaton, Kyara, Kaylynne, and Kai, step-daughters, Jessica (Randy) Griffith and Jennifer Walston. Anderson, Joseph Duane - Joseph Duane Anderson was born June 17, 1916, in Sharpsburg, to J.J. and Hilda (Sundberg) Anderson. Duane passed away Friday, March 16, 2007, at Clarinda Regional Health Center.

Duane spent most of his life in Taylor County. He attended Hazel Dell country school and graduated from New Market High School with the class of 1932 at the age of 15. He went to work for his father on the family farm until he married his high school sweetheart, Helen Pullan,on May 1, 1937, in Ames [Iowa]. Duane started his own farming operation in Sharpsburg and then moved to New Market in 1942.

Duane is survived by his children, daughter Harryette Ann and husband Merrill Larson, New Market; son Joseph Duane and wife, Jane Anderson, Pensacola, Fla; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brother Dale and wife, Doris, Kansas City, Mo; and sisters Lois and husband, Ken Garrett, Clarinda, and Elynor Kerr, Leesburg, Vir. Duane also is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen, and brother Ronald; and brother-in-law, Wayne Kerr.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 19, 2007, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, with Pator Russ Clark officiating. Interment was at Memory Cemetery, New Market. A memorial fund is being established.

Walker-Merrick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Babcock, Rozella Marie Eighmy - Rozella Marie (Eighmy) Babcock was born in Taylor County, Iowa to Gayol and Letha (Perkins) Eighmy November 26, 1921. She attended many different country schools in Taylor County and in Kansas. She graduated from Bedford high School in 1941. She stayed with her grandmother Perkins the last two years as her family had moved to rural Gravity.

Marie worked as a waitress and later at Cudahay. Later, she worked as a telephone operator in Clarinda riding the Continental Trailways bus from Clarinda to Bedford when she went home for a visit. Marie met her husband to be at that time, probably at a dance which was very popular at that time and later. She married Robert Babcock February 27, 1949. He was working for Iowa Power and Light but gave that up to start farming south of Bedford. Their daughter Carolyn was born in 1951 in Maryville, Missouri. They moved to a farm west of Gravity. Their son, Hugh was born in 1953. Marie was a Gold Star member of the the order of the Eastern Star holding many offices.

Marie started working at Lisle Corporation to supplement their income as many wives did. They then bought the Babcock home place at Ladoga. Robert built a new home on the property and was working on it when he became a victim of cancer and died in 1976. Marie continued to work at Lisle Corporation until she retired. Marie and a dear friend were able to travel to many places over the years. She also had brought her daughter home on week ends and special occasions. Marie moved to New Market in 1992 and lived there until 2016 when she moved to the Eiler Place and then to Goldenrod Manor.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; daughter, Carolyn; parents; in-laws, Hugh and Grace Babcock; sister and husband, Mildred and Chester Goslin; brother and wife, Earl and Mary Eighmy; brother and wife Ivan and Dorothy Eighmy; brother-in-law, Bill (Grace) Babcock; sisters, Dora (Oliver) Lock and Agnes (Leland) Radke; brother-in-law, Herby DeBolt.

Marie is survived by her son, Hugh Babcock and wife Sara of Waterloo, Iowa; grandson, Robert Babcock and fiancé, Heather Nelson of Waterloo; granddaughter, Heather Weber and husband Brian of San Angelo and great granddaughter, Felicity Dawn Weber; a sister, Lorraine DeBolt of Clarinda, Iowa; nieces; nephews and many friends

Barrans, Frances "Marian" Thomas - Frances Marian (Thomas) Barrans was born on March 2, 1930 at the family home in Gallatin, Missouri to Robert Hiram and Anna (Cohrs) Thomas. Marian is the oldest out of three children. Her sister Lillian was born in 1931, followed by Robert in 1937. At the age of 5 the family moved from Missouri to a farm near Conway, Iowa, where Marian started country school until the third grade. The family then moved several times until they settled on J20 near Bushville. She continued country school in Corning, Iowa. She graduated from Corning High School in 1948. Marian had known from an early age that she wanted to be a teacher, often playing school with her siblings and always being the teacher. During high school, she was able to take a course called Normal Training for two years. She taught in a one-room school house for nine years, located west of Bushville, where she taught kindergarten through 8th grade.

In 1956 she met the love of her life, William (Bill) Barrans at a dance in Clarinda, Iowa while he was on leave from the Army. With having plans to get married, she quit teaching and started working as the bookkeeper for Bill’s parents at George Barrans and Son. They were married on February 16, 1958. She continued to work until 1959, when the two welcomed their first son Mark. Son Chris followed in 1961 and daughter Linda in 1964. In 1969 Bill and Marian purchased the feed store and it became Barrans Farm Supply. Marian continued to be a stay at home mom but helped at the store whenever needed, especially in the fall. For most of their married life Bill and Marian lived where Marian currently resided.

Marian loved her family, the outdoors, mowing, gardening and raising flowers. She also enjoyed baking and visiting with friends. Marian was a member of two women’s card clubs, Methodist Circle, the Lenox Auxiliary and had served on the Lenox Library board.

Left to cherish her memory are sons, Mark (Becky) Barrans and Chris (Jean) Barrans and daughter Linda (Chris) Christensen; grandchildren, Reagan (Ernest) Phillips, Alex (Melissa) Barrans, Jamie Barrans, Nicki (Chris) Lock, Jeremy (BreeAnn) Barrans, Maggie (Tyler) Peterson, Austin (Paige) Christensen and Bethany Christensen; great grandchildren, Will, Dane and Nick Butler, Cora and Quinn Lock, Jarett and Kai Barrans, and Graham, Miles and Maura Peterson; sister Lillian; sisters-in-law Wilma Hughes and Carol Thomas; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Antisdel, Austin Andrew - Grimes, Iowa - Austin Andrew Cecil Antisdel, 32, passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2020, at home surrounded by his family after a three-year battle with Small Cell Lung Cancer. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, October 24, at Iles Westover Chapel. The service will be live-streamed on the Iles Website. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Moon Cemetery in Macksburg, Iowa.

Austin was born May 27, 1988, in Des Moines, Iowa, to David and Kimberly (Busch) Antisdel. He grew up on a farm north of Prescott, Iowa until the age of 10 when he moved to Bedford. Austin then graduated from Bedford High School in 2007 and received his Bachelor's Degree in Sports Management from Grand View University. He married Nicole Roorda on January 20, 2019, in Prole, Iowa.

Following his passion for baseball, Austin served as an intern for the Iowa Cubs and the Indianapolis Indians before transitioning to the financial industry working for Wells Fargo and later as an Operations Team Lead for Voya Financial. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking, golfing, spending time with family and watching the Huskers and Cubs. Not to forget his love for his two fur-babies, Wrigley Ryne and Finley Grace.

Austin is survived by his wife, Nicole Antisdel, mother and step-father, Kim (Steve) Watson, his father and step-mother, Dave (Annette) Antisdel, his brothers, Cale (Kaitlin) Antisdel and Clay (Brittany Skinner) Antisdel; his step-siblings, Tony (Cassie) Watson, Ashley (Ryan) Nelson, Ken (Jana) Gillespie, Mike (Bobbie) Gillespie, and Rob (Alexandra) Gillespie; great-grandmother, Violet Antisdel; grandparents, Larry Antisdel and Virginia Antisdel; and many other loved ones.

Bennett, Frank William - Friends and Family are invited to celebrate the life of Frank William Bennett who died unexpectedly at his home in Lenox, Iowa, on Thursday, August 20, 2020, shortly before his 62nd birthday. Frank was born on September 16th, to Paul G. and Rosa M. Bennett. His legacy is his integrity as a man, a strong faith in God, his humor, enthusiasm, and great kindness to family and friends. Sandwiched between two sisters, he frequently managed to tease them to distraction with a big grin! He grew up on a farm southeast of Lenox and was a 4-H member. Frank attended Lenox schools, proud to be a Lenox Tiger for football, wrestling, and track. Frank was a lifelong member of the Lenox United Methodist church.

Frank liked science and math, problem solving, and enjoyed building with his hands. Frank liked to travel. After high school, he bought an America Rail Pass to see the country before his enlistment date in the United States Air Force. He was based at Tyndall AFB in Florida and George AFB in California. After talking to the recruiters, he thought to be trained as an electrician. Instead they recognized his intelligence and calm control, directing him into using his technical skills and critical thinking to become an Explosive Ordinance Disposal Specialist. He also served in military funeral Honor Details. After his first tour, he came home and completed the Carpentry & Building Trades program at the SW Community College in Creston. He worked building a few houses, however continuous jobs were few at that time, so he reenlisted. After his discharge, he worked in EOD/UXO and HazMat jobs. His employers changed as different civilian contracting companies gained bid awards. He served in positions from basic to supervisor. Much of the work was providing “detect, disarm, detonate and disposal’ of ordinance as part of Arial Bombing Range Clearance of duds/unexploded ordinance, and some additional hazardous materials work. He knew every kind of shell from casing to fuse and load. He worked frequently in California, Nevada and Oregon, keeping an apartment in the Victorville/ Barstow, CA, area when working near/on the Fort Irwin Training Range.

Sometimes with a month between contract assignments, he would ride his Suzuki 850 motorcycle to Iowa or to see buddies countrywide. He would help on farming, or repairs as needed by the folks. Or, he might choose a new experience such as visiting Alaska, borrowing his sister’s car with camping gear, and have a new ocean-to-mountain adventure. He also loved going to air shows and state fairs.

Frank never married. He much enjoyed visiting with multiple generations of his family and friends, sharing his keen attention and many interests. He was generous, with both his time and resources. Frank enjoyed good food, shared with others. He was a big guy, body and heart; in the last few years injuries and arthritic joint damage slowed him to walking with a limp, or aid of a big stick. Like a number of veterans, he vowed not to shave after finishing with the military, and so sported a big beard

Frank was an avid reader of his Bible, and everything from mysteries & western novels, latest technology in cold climates building & farm/ranch machinery inventions , to money & finance. He frequently encouraged nieces, nephews and other young people to become financially literate, learn how to save-plan-invest, all in order to live well in the future and retirement.

Frank is survived by his brother Dave Bennett of Lenox/Brooks, IA; sister Pauline Bennett-Gannon of Fairbanks, AK; and sister Karen Heck (Evan) of Corydon, IA; aunts Liz Wilson of Glenwood, and Virginia Bennett of Creston; along with nieces and nephews including Lisa Johnson, Poe O'Conner, Glenna Gannon, Ian Gannon, Rowna Heck, Clayton Heck, James Robinson, Heather Avila, Jeff Mckauge, Chrystal Estel, good friend Jon Piercy, and many cousins. Beddenback, Lawrence - Funeral Services for Lawrence Biddenback, age 69, will be held Tuesday, October 13, 2020, at 11 AM, at Cummings Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at 10 AM until service time. Interment with Military Rites will be held at Fairview Cemetery.

Lawrence Arthur Biddenback was born April 18, 1951 in Napa, California to Raymond Biddenback and Evelyn (Donahoo) Biddenback. Lawrence grew to maturity in Napa and graduated from there in 1969.

Following his graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Lawrence dedicated the next 25 years of his life to dutifully serving his country, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant E7. Lawrence served in the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Shield/Storm. Lawrence was proud of his service time. He also enjoyed seeing different parts of the world. He often recalled being called the "Chi-Master" which means "Master Of Tea" by the locals when he was stationed in Turkey.

Lawrence was married to Teresa Hughes, April 4, 1982 at the Bedford United Methodist Church. To this blessed union 3 children were born, Sarah, John, and Karl. Lawrence loved his family and was known as "Pa" by his grandchildren. Lawrence was a life-time member of the John F. Hardin American Legion Post 164. Lawrence also loved fishing, even if he didn't get any bites, shooting archery, camping, playing slide trombone, reading and witnessing his love for his Lord and Savior to anyone any chance he could.

Lawrence is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Evelyn Biddenback, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Duane and Marjorie Hughes. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Teresa Biddenback of Bedford, Iowa; children, Sarah (Steve) Hallock of Winterset, Iowa; John (Amanda) Biddenback of Burlington Junction, Missouri; Karl (Ashton) Biddenback of Stanton, Iowa; grandchildren, Eli Hollock, Emily Biddenback and one more due in December; siblings, Keith Biddenback and Linda Lotz both of Napa, California and brother-in-law, Jim Hughes of Gravity, Iowa, along with many other relatives and friends

Brown, Laverne - (Allie) Laverne Brown formerly of Bedford, Iowa passed away on Saturday July 11, 2020 and is now reunited with his beloved wife of 71 years. Laverne was 92. For the last several years, Laverne had resided at Mount Ayr Health Care Center in Mount Ayr, Iowa. Graveside services for Laverne, age 92, were held Thursday, July 16, 2020 at 10 am at Rose Hill Cemetery in Blockton, Iowa. Cummings Funeral Home of Bedford arrangements.

Laverne was born to Allie and Hazel Brown on March 8th, 1928 on the Brown family farm, just north of Blockton, Iowa. He was the youngest of 6 children: Mildred, Maona, Kenneth, Rex, Elton and then Laverne. All are now deceased.

Laverne attended a one room schoolhouse he called Country School through the 8th grade and high school In Blockton. In high school he played baseball and basketball with friends he grew up with and remained friends with throughout his life. He had many stories and fond memories that he wrote down and had made into a book called “The Story of My Life." Each of his children and grandchildren have a copy.

After he graduated high school, he worked for the REA putting electric lines across the country. He tried to enlist in the Navy like many of his friends from school but since he was colorblind, they wouldn’t take him. In 1945 he enlisted in the Army and spent his 18th birthday in a pup tent at training camp. He ended up in Nuremberg, Germany during the Nuremberg Trials as a guard and then as a driver for the Motor Pool. He drove for a Chaplain, Major Carl Eggers. They became good friends and always kept in touch at Christmas time until Carl passed away in 1999.

Laverne sent most of his Army pay home to his mom but may have earned a little extra playing cards. He sent the extra home to Elton for him to put away for him. He didn’t want his mom to know he was playing cards. After his discharge from the Army he had saved enough to buy a truck for hauling livestock and whatever anyone needed to have hauled. Laverne and his brother Rex bought and sold livestock together for a while and used the truck and Laverne also took his future wife on their first date together in that same truck.

Laverne married Annabell Campbell on March 12th, 1948. Together they bought a farm just east of Bedford, Iowa. They loved farming their land together through the good and the not so good years, like every farm family has. They had many great neighbors, close friends and family that they traveled with, camped with and spent time with just talking or maybe playing a marble game they called Barn.

Laverne leaves behind 3 children: Tom Brown, Dan (Peg) Brown and Judy (Alan) Huggenberger. He also leaves behind 4 grandchildren: Thomas (Sonia), Tara (Cory), Kaley (Byron) and Jake and 4 great-grandchildren: Dallas, Clarke, Malin and Bode

Burroughs, Beverly Ann Goudie - Beverly Ann Burroughs, 88 died Saturday, October 17, 2020 at Lisbon Care Center in Lisbon, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at the Cummings Family Funeral Home in Bedford, Iowa on Wednesday October 21, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. with burial at the Gravity Cemetery. Family will greet guests beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Beverly Ann (Goudie) Burroughs was born August 23, 1932, in Ross Township south of Bedford, Iowa the oldest daughter, of George and Vesta (Hamblin) Goudie. She has one brother, Dean (Ann) Goudie of Bedford, and four sisters: Imogene Goudie of Grimes, Patricia (Ted) Cummings of Altoona, Sandra (Allen) Campbell of Arvada, Colorado, and Virginia (Doug) Larson of Polk City. Proceeding Beverly in death are her parents, two siblings who died in infancy: Betty Marjorie Goudie, Larry Goudie, and Shirley J. Mettille Robertson of Des Moines who passed in July of 2019.

Beverly grew up attending school in Gravity and Bedford, graduating in 1950 from Bedford High School, Beverly then went to work at the telephone office in Bedford. She soon met Glen Roger Burroughs and they were married on June 8, 1952, the couple were united in marriage at the First Baptist Church in Bedford. To this loving union, one son, Jeffrey Dean was born to bless their lives. Glen and Beverly were married 61 years. They enjoyed playing cards with friends, getting together with family in Des Moines, traveling to Omaha to visit Del and Richard Phillis, who is Glen’s nephew, and listening and dancing to Jeff’s music.

Beverly always had beautiful flowers, was a wonderful cook, and meticulous housekeeper, enjoyed lunches with her sisters and eventually became a Hawkeye Fan, she spent many hours each day sitting with Jeff as he practiced the organ, plus drove him to lessons in Des Moines, Beverly was SO proud of Jeff! She always had all her photo albums and occasional cards neatly placed in a scrapbooks, she had a fun sense of humor, evident till the end as the nurses shared, she would sing and dance down the halls at the Lisbon Care Center.

Beverly worked with Glen at Burroughs Plumbing & Heating, owned a Tot & Teen children’s clothing store, and later worked at The Country Store in Bedford. Beverly was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, daughter, and great-aunt and will be greatly missed.

Jeff married Jane (Fry) Burroughs in 1978, they had two children Joseph David of Cedar Rapids, born in 1981, and Sara Ann of North Liberty in 1989. Beverly was thrilled to have grandchildren and loved them SO much! Beverly enjoyed traveling to Cedar Rapids to attend Joe’s marching band competitions, Sara’s dance recitals and show choir events, and many joyous holidays with family.

In later years Jeff moved Beverly to an Assisted Living Facility in Cedar Rapids, where she met new friends, and could be closer to family, from there she transitioned to the Lisbon Care Center where she received exceptional care. Beverly’s family would like to thank the staff of the Lisbon Care Center and Compassus Hospice Care – that provided her final hours and continues to be COVID-19 free

Cabbage, LaDonna Mae Pratt - LaDonna Cabbage, 84, of New Market, Iowa entered into peace Thursday, November 19, 2020 at her residence in New Market. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 23, 2020 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Visitation will be 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, November 22, 2020 at the funeral home. Interment will be held at the Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa.

LaDonna Mae Cabbage was born September 5, 1936 in Clarinda, Iowa to Leslie George Pratt and Ina Pearl (Jackson) Pratt. She suddenly passed away in her home November 19, 2020. LaDonna grew up on a farm, first living southeast of Clarinda, then moved to east of New Market, then the family moved south of New Market by Siam. She was the fifth of 6 children. She attended the Siam Elementary School and New Market High School where she graduated in 1954. On May 22, 1954, LaDonna, married Thaine Mason Cabbage, they had four children, Gail, Steve, Kevin, Rick, to bless this union. LaDonna and Thaine parted ways in 1990.

LaDonna loved her family and got together with them every chance available. She was a homemaker for several years, seeing to their needs and following the kids in their various activities and sports. She was a terrific cook, family favorites were her potato salad, apple dumplings, cinnamon rolls, ham salad and dinner rolls. The family loved their Christmas’ and the July 4th celebration as many of the family watched the fireworks from her acreage in New Market. Prior to grandkids, she prepared Sunday night dinner for the family. The family enjoyed trips to horse pulling events. She tells of frying a pan of fried chicken the morning before heading to the Iowa State Fair to camp and participate in the horse pulls. LaDonna had various jobs, Avon Sales Representative, New Market Grocery Store, in-home care for an elderly couple, Bordeaux, and in 1988 she started at NSK/AKS in the shipping room where she retired.

LaDonna had a great love for her community. She belonged to the New Market Church of Christ and has been active in the Loyal Sisters serving others, her church family, but most importantly her Lord and Savior. She was a charter member of the Women Who Care, who are most famous for their July 4th breakfasts! This group of ladies also gave generously of their time to bring beauty to New Market by planting flowers along Main Street and financially supporting various needs within New Market. LaDonna served on the New Market 4th of July Celebration Committee, served on the Low Rent Housing Board, and volunteered for Southwest Iowa Families Nest Program, and enjoyed the card and domino clubs. LaDonna enjoyed reading, flower gardening and antiquing and visiting with her many friends.

Preceding LaDonna in death were her parents, Leslie Pratt and Ina Pearl (Jackson) Pratt, her daughter Gail (Cabbage) Eitzen, her daughter in love, Shelly (Scroggs) Cabbage, siblings, LaMeade (Pratt) Carmichael, Robert Pratt, Bill Pratt, and Dale Pratt.

Graveside services for Melba Dawson, age 97, will be held Saturday, October 17, 2020 at 1:15 PM at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the services at Cummings Family Funeral Home beginning at 12:00 PM until 1 PM.

Melba Doris (New) Dawson was born November 22, 1922, to Frank New Jr. and Letha Ann (Blake) New, in Hopkins, Missouri. Melba grew up and attended school at Hopkins and graduated in 1940. Melba was a member of the Hopkins Christian Church before moving to Bedford and attending the Bedford United Christian Presbyterian Church.

Melba married Joseph Brice Dawson, June 4, 1948, in Red Oak, Iowa. To this union one son, Richard Joe Dawson was born. Melba also became mother to Joe's two children Robert and Judy Dawson. The family made their home on a farm southwest of Bedford, Iowa. Melba enjoyed being a farm wife and all the tasks that went along with it. Melba also worked as the manager of the S & G Store for over 20 years as well as working at Western Auto, Clarinda Auction Cafe, Job Services, Matura and the Taylor County Neighborhood Center.

Melba was a Lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Gold Star Sister Post 164, Charter member of the Bedford Saddle Club, Forever Young Club, Square Dance Club and Quilting Club at the United Christian Presbyterian Church.

Melba is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Dawson; son, Robert Dawson; daughter and son-in-law, Judy Sederburg (Clemie); parents, Frank and Letha New; sisters, Iola (Harold) Millen, Viola (Clifford) Pullen, Dorothy (Max) Pullen, and brothers, Robert New (Darlene) and Orville F. New who was killed in World War 2.

Diggs, Reta Verlee Williams - Graveside Funeral Services for Reta Diggs, 82, of Bedford, Iowa who passed away July 17, 2020 were held Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at 10:30 AM at Washington Cemetery in Gravity, Iowa. Visitation was held Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at Cummings Family Funeral Home.

Reta Verlee (Williams) Diggs was born March 16, 1938 on a farm north of Clarinda, Iowa near Hepburn. Her parents were Donald Williams and Una Alice (Newberry) Williams. She was the oldest of three children having two younger sisters, Geraldine (Williams) Klakken and Kristin (Williams) Wollenhaupt.

She was considered the tomboy of the family and she was always in the field helping her dad. Her mother would have her help dust, which Reta hated. Her mother would holler as she ran out the door, “ Get back in here and dust these table legs!” She could drive any tractor, truck, car or anything that had wheels and moved. She could shoot a gun straighter than anyone. She would make Geraldine and Kris hold the flashlight in the corn crib so she could shoot all the pigeons…and she did! Her daddy told her, “You better not miss and waste those shells or you won’t be shooting anymore!”

She attended country school through eighth grade walking to and from school every day or riding a bicycle. One day she put Geraldine on the handle bars and took off down the road. Somehow, Geraldine caught her foot in the spokes and they went head over heels. Geraldine lost her shoe and never did find it. They hobbled and crawled back to the house. Their mother said that was the quietest day ever. She never heard a peep out of them.

Reta attended Clarinda Community High School and graduated in 1956. After graduating she started working at the telephone office in Clarinda, Iowa as a telephone operator on the switchboard. Her dad lost his farm hand! She moved into her first apartment with Leona Clark, a lifetime friend. She remained single until she was 30 years old when she was swept off her feet by the very eligible bachelor, Francis Raymond Diggs of Guss, Iowa. He was only 42 and had never been married. They were married on September 22nd, 1968 at the Rosehill Church, north of Clarinda by Reverend Carl Cummings and yes, they stayed married for 37 years until Francis passed away in December of 2005.

They lived at the old home place at Guss for a year. They then bought a farm north of the Washington Cemetery in Gravity, Iowa where they lived until 1990 when they moved to Bedford. They soon added to this union, two daughters, Deana Lynn (Diggs) Dorce and Alice Elaine (Diggs) Walston.

Reta could do anything, so she did. She planted a huge garden and canned everything that she could to have food for the winter. She worked as a waitress at the sale barn cafe in Bedford, Iowa for Wilbur and Patty Rowe. She helped Francis with the farm. She and Francis put up circle grain bins for Keith O’Dell. She and her sister, Geraldine, ran the sale barn cafe in Clarinda, Iowa for 11 years for Clark Crawford and lunched many a farm sale out of the back of Klakken’s pickup camper. She cooked for the congregate meal site at the Purple Palace for Coryl Cox. She bought a little Ford tractor with a disc and plow. She made extra spending money plowing gardens for everyone in Gravity and surrounding area. She was a waitress at the Skylark Cafe for Gary Jones. She also worked at the Bedford meat market for Jim Wilson. She worked in the kitchen at Clare Haven in Clarinda. They mowed the Ladoga and Washington Cemetery and they mopped the Hy-Vee in Bedford on Monday nights for years.

She was a member of the Gravity Christian Church. Whenever the doors were open, she and her family were there, fifteen minutes early or not at all! She was very proud of her children and would do anything to help them and she did. She was their number one fan and rarely missed any event where they were involved. She enjoyed her nieces and nephews and grandkids immensely. She lived life to it’s fullest. She helped her neighbors or anyone else who needed it. In later years when Francis passed away she joined Deana in Haiti and survived the earthquake in 2010. She then came back to the Bedford where she took care of her grandkids, Ashley, Kelsey and Josiah for six months. She also spent a lot of time with her grandson Micah who would keep her company most weekends, attend church with her and take meals she had made to Aunt Roberta and Uncle Bob to visit and eat with them. Her grand daughter Ashley came to live with her and attend high school in Bedford.

Reta was known and loved by many. You never had to wonder what she thought because she would tell you. This didn’t change when she became a resident at Bedford Care Initiatives. She made many friends with residents and staff alike. Known for her love of birds she was always after one of the staff, her daughter Alice in particular, to get those bird feeders filled because the birds were hungry.

She lived a full life and she never held anything back. She was always ready for the next adventure. She taught her children to work hard, be kind, share what they had with others. She said if you can’t say anything nice then don’t say anything at all.

She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her. Left to cherish her memory are two daughters: Deana Dorce and husband Wilckly Dorce of Kyona, Haiti; Alice Walston and husband Dan Walston of Bedford, Iowa; her two sisters: Geraldine Klakken of Bedford, Iowa and Kristin Wollenhaupt and husband Rodger of Red Oak, Iowa; 6 grandchildren, Ashley, Kelsey and Josiah Dorce and Alexis, Caleb and Micah Johnson; 3 nieces: Cheryl Adkins and husband Kevin of Clearmont, Missouri, Sherri Turner and husband Tracy of Elliot, Iowa, Teresa Cain and husband Rob of Maryville, Missouri and nephew Marvin Klakken and wife Shelly of Kinston, North Carolina, and many great nieces and nephews.

Dowling, Jim - Jim Dowling, 76, of Bedford, Iowa passed away on Saturday, October 17th, 2020 with his family by his side. Private family funeral services will be held Thursday, October 22, 2020 at 10:30am at Cummings Family Funeral Home. Interment with Military Rites will be held at Fairview Cemetery following the funeral.

James Leonard Dowling was born March 24, 1944 in Lake City, Iowa to Louis Dowling and Charlotte (Leonard) Dowling. He graduated from Cedar Valley High school in Farnhamville, Iowa in 1962.

After serving 4 years in the Navy, he met and married Marian Wendland on June 7, 1969. In 1971 they moved to the family farm south of Farnhamville where they lived and worked together for 20 years. Jim returned to college, and earned a degree in Nursing Home Administration. He first served as the administrator of the West Bend Care Center for 2 years, and then settled his family in Bedford where he served as the administrator of Bedford Nursing and Rehab Center until his retirement.

He was a man who always put his family first. He had a strong faith in God and a love for the farm. Although his life took him to other places, his heart never left the farm. He also greatly enjoyed fishing with family and friends and working outside in the yard.  

He was the loving and devoted husband of Marian Dowling for 51 amazing years, and the proud father of seven children and 23 grandchildren: Dave (Kim) Dowling of Sidney; Kenzie, Avery, & Alyssa; Lisa (Mike) McCarty of Ames; Josie, Zeke, Luke, Gabe, & Isaac; Matt (Heidi) Dowling of Greybull, WY;  Cole & Gabby; Mark (Amanda) Dowling of Bellevue, NE; Aidan, Merrick, Xander, & Marshall; Rose Mary (Jason) Ross of Huxley; Abbey, Jacob, Gracie, Lane & Zack; Julie (Ryan) Johnsen of Huxley; Cash, Jack, & Henry; Gina (Mike) Gassman of Bernard; Lucy. Survivors also include one brother, Dan (Rose) Dowling of Palisade, CO, and sister-in-law, Connie (Don) Heim, of Ames.

Farrens, Janice Anne Hooper - A private family graveside funeral for Janice Anne Farrens will be held Thursday, August 6, 2020 at Fairview Cemetery in Bedford, Iowa. Visitation for Janice will be held Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at Cummings Family Funeral Home from 3 PM to 7 PM with family greeting friends from 5 PM to 7 PM.

Janice Anne (Hooper) Farrens was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on February 12, 1942 at Missouri Methodist Hospital. She was born to Claude Allen "CA" Hooper and Ana Pauline (Smith) Hooper.

Janice was baptized in the Bedford Methodist Church in 1946. She was later confirmed in 1954 and was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church.

Jan attended Bedford Community Schools, K-12, graduating in 1960. She was active in glee club, mixed chorus, cheerleading for 6 years, and numerous high school clubs.

After high school graduation Jan attended the Professional Business Institute of Dentistry in Minneapolis, graduating in 1961. She started work for Dr. C.B. Eller, D.D.S. and later worked for Dr. Harland Bradrick, D.D.S. in Clarinda, Iowa.

In April, 1962, Jan was married to Thomas Richard Farrens. To that union a son, John Thomas was born in 1966. In 1968, they were blessed with a daughter Molly Anne.

Beta Sigma Phi chartered a new chapter, Eta Epsilon, in 1963. Jan was their charter President and made a lifetime of friends in Clarinda.

Jan worked many places as the children got older. She worked at Carriage Motors, KQIS Radio, Killions Decorating, and at Lisle Corporation for 27 years.

Jan enjoyed time with family and close friends. She also enjoyed reading, baking, flowers and being outdoors. She always had a 4-legged family member close by for company.

Jan passed away on Friday, July 31 in Lincoln, Nebraska. She is survived by her son John and his wife Brenda, daughter Molly and her husband Lance. She is also survived by grandchildren John, Meagan, and Kaitlyn Myers, and Madison, Lucas, and Chase Farrens.

Preceding Jan in death were her parents, Claude “CA” and Pauline Hooper, maternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Bill Smith, and paternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. William T. Hooper.

William Dean Fleetwood was born October 19, 1932 in Ozark County, Missouri to William Isaac and Lola May (Rackley) Fleetwood. He passed away on October 12, 2020 at the age of 87, just one week short of his 88th birthday.

Bill was a grave digger for many counties in Southwest Iowa and Northwest Missouri for many years. He dug graves all by hand which you sure don’t see today.

In his spare time Bill enjoyed hunting. He had forgotten more about hunting and dogs than most people learn in a lifetime. He taught many kids to ride, hunt, skin and shoot.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and grandson Bobbie Lee Fleetwood Jr. (BJ).

Left to cherish Bill’s memory are his sons: Gary Fleetwood of Blockton, Iowa and Bob Fleetwood of Grant City, Missouri; daughter: Nancy Lyle of Grant City, Missouri; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; special friend, Virginia Robison and many friends.

Bill was a good humble man with a simple outlook on life. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.

Anita Jean (Romick) Frazier was born in Alliance, Nebraska, January 16, 1957, to George and Gloria Romick.

In 1974 Anita married Lester Young. To this union one daughter, Laura, was born. The couple later divorced. Anita was a stay at home mother to Laura and enjoyed spending time with her as she grew to maturity.

Anita enjoyed crocheting, watching Gun smoke, listening to Conway Twitty, playing her pickle tickets (scratch off lottery tickets), drinking coffee with her daughter and sister Lorla and visiting on the phone with her loved ones. Anita loved her family most of all. She would do anything she could to help them out and had a "heart of gold."

Preceding Anita in death were her parents, George and Gloria Romick; and a brother, Miran Romick. Garner, Caroline Cora Callison -

Caroline Cora Callison was born March 16, 1931 to Don and Grace Callison at Story City, Iowa. Caroline entered into rest November 30, 2020, at the Clearview Home in Mt. Ayr, Iowa at the age of 89. Caroline’s father (Don) was a Methodist minister, which guided their path of life to settle in several Iowa locations, which included Newton, Altoona, Allerton, and Clearfield.

Caroline learned all the books of the bible, which was put into a song when she was a child. She continued singing this song growing up and would still recite it when she was in the nursing home. Caroline taught Sunday School, and at that time she gave her heart to God.

In 1948, Caroline was married to Paul Nelson of Clearfield. They raised four children: Judy, Jim, Jeanie, and Kenny. Caroline’s world was and always continued to be her children and grandchildren. She loved her family so much. During those years, Caroline raised chickens and sold eggs. She would dress around 300 chickens every summer. She also every summer put in a huge garden growing lots of fresh vegetables.

Caroline worked at the Stringtown Cafe when her brother (George) owned it, as well as cooked at Congregate Meals in Clearfield, Junction Cafe in Bedford, and O’Hares in Bedford. Her job was making pies and salads. Caroline was always known for her delicious pies.

Cookouts were held often with special friends. Sunday night suppers with her children and grandchildren were a weekly tradition for many years. Caroline loved Christmas and would send close to 150 cards to friends and family. She loved to play cards, board games, and watch TV game shows. She belonged to The 17 Club and The PFF Club (Purely For Fun Club).

In 1986, Caroline and Paul divorced. February 21, 1988 was a special day as she married Hank Garner of Bedford. A special ceremony was held at Hank’s sister’s home in Shenandoah, Iowa. Caroline was blessed with many family members on Hank’s side. She loved them all.

Caroline and Hank loved each other so much and cherished each and every day. They lived in Lenox for a few years; then, moved to Bedford until Hank retired. They made a final move to Clearfield where they lived until they moved into the Clearview Homes in Clearfield and later Mt. Ayr.

Caroline and Hank enjoyed camping and traveling, especially to Branson and Bagnell Dam. They played bingo nearly every week in Bedford. After they moved to Clearfield, the Windrow Restaurant in Creston became an almost daily trip for them to dine. They became close to many of the employees there.

Caroline and Hank attended the Presbyterian Church in Lenox. Minister Tim Maxa became so special to them. They loved Tim and loved visiting with him at church and at their home when Tim would visit them.

Caroline was such a kind mother – grandmother – wife – and friend. She cherished all of her family and loved spending time with them. She will be missed by so many.

Caroline was preceded in death by her loving husband, Hank Garner on December 25, 2019; parents (Don and Grace Callison), sister(Gracemary Beck), two brothers (Don and Jack Callison), grandson (Chad Larson), and great grandson (Ethan James Nelson).

Caroline is survived by: a brother, George Callison of Creston; four children Judy (Steve) Sandahl of Waukee, Jim Nelson of Ankeny, Jeanie (Greg) Larson of Clearfield, Kenny (Chong) Nelson of Osceola; eleven grandchildren Scott (Lori) Sandahl of St. Marys, Shannon Sandahl of Waukee, Ryan (Laura) Sandahl of Illinois, Shawn (Tyler) Sandahl of Minnesota, Dana (Eric) Snyder of Grimes, Dan (Shannon) Nelson of Ankeny, Angie (Garrick) Miller of Clearfield, Brandon (Debbie) Larson of Clearfield, Jennifer (Rowdy) Dymond of Bedford, LaDanya Nelson of Lenox, Ashley (Seth) Schafer of Texas; as well as great grandchildren, one great great-grandson, other relatives, and many friends.

Hiatt, Teresa "Terry" Dawn - Teresa Hiatt, 60, of New Market, Iowa entered into peace Thursday, December 3, 2020 at the Mercy Hospital, Council Bluffs, Iowa. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Reverend Dan Wiebesiek officiating.

Teresa Dawn (Richardson) Hiatt was born November 28, 1960 in Clarinda, Iowa to Jerry Richardson and Kay (Dailey) Richardson. Terry grew up in Shambaugh and Coin attending South Page Schools and graduating from South Page High School with the class of 1979. She was united in marriage to Larry Hiatt November 9, 1991.

Terry had various jobs and occupations through the years including working at MHI, a cook at McNallys restaurant, owning and running the New Market Café, owning and working at the Clarinda Greenhouse and Flower Shop and her final job with PCSB Bank. She was a very good cook and she also really enjoyed using her artistic ability designing flower arrangements at the Greenhouse.

Terry enjoyed riding motorcycles with Larry. She also enjoyed taking cruises, going to the casino and especially enjoyed being with friends, family and her dog, Max. Crafting and painting were favorite pastime.

Preceding Terry in death were her parents, Jerry Richardson and Kay Hamilton; brother, Dennis Hamilton; stepson, Tim Hiatt.

Glen Eldon Hull was born November 30, 1927 in Blockton, Iowa to Ralph and Estelle (Cavin) Hull. He passed at his home on October 9, 2020 at the age of 92.

The only child of Ralph and Estelle, Glen grew up in the Blockton area, living and working there throughout his lifetime to do what he loved, farming and taking care of his cows. Checking on his cows was the first chore in the morning and last chore of the evening. On May 15, 1949  he was united in marriage to Clara Auten. To this union four sons were born. Richard Allen, Bobby and Wilbur.

Glen also enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He and Clara spent many hours together doing all the things they loved to do. Clara preceded him in death in 2014.

Also preceding him in death were sons: Wilbur, Allen and Richard; and his parents.

Left to cherish his memory are his son Bobby and wife Carolyn of Blockton, Iowa, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as many friends. He will be sadly missed.

Graveside Memorial Services and Inurnment will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, October 16, 2020 in the Athelstan Cemetery in Athelstan, Iowa with Rev. Scott Marcum officiating.

Huntington, Melinda Faye - Melinda Faye Huntington, age 54 of Pleasant Hill, Iowa passed away peacefully at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Melinda went to be with her Lord on August, 18 2020.
Melinda was born in Hamlet , North Carolina on June 21, 1966. She is the daughter of Reldon and Claudia Huntington of Lenox, Iowa. Melinda graduated from Lenox High School in 1984 where she loved playing softball and playing the bass saxophone in the band.

Melinda attended Patricia Stevens Institute of Art and Business in Omaha, Nebraska. Throughout her life Melinda worked at several businesses in Lenox, southwest Iowa and the Des Moines metropolitan area. In her last few years she worked in sales and she loved the interactions that she had with her customers.

Melinda was a wonderful artist who enjoyed drawing and painting as well as arts and crafts. She was a giving and devoted friend to many. All who knew her will miss her smile and infectious laugh. She had a big heart and she truly cared for everyone.

Melinda will be fondly remembered by her father Reldon Huntington, brother Bill (Diana) Huntington; sister Beth (Andy) McCutchan, sister Becky (Lance) Wignall nieces and nephews Emily (Kevin) Irr, Joseph Huntington, Olivia Huntington, Lauren Wignall, Owen Wignall and Briella McCutchan.

Killam, Herbert Wendel - Funeral Services for Herbert Killam, 88, will be Friday, October 16, 2020 at 11 AM at Cummings Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be Thursday, October 15, 2020 from 4-7 PM with family greeting friends from 5-7 PM. Interment with Military Rites will be held at Fairview Cemetery following the funeral.

Herbert Wendel Killam was born September 24, 1932 in Sheridan, Missouri to Ross Robert and Beaulah Lucile (Taylor) Killam. He graduated high school in Hopkins, Missouri in 1950 and began working at a grocery store in Maryville, as college was not financially possible. After working at the grocery store a few months Herb began working for Wren Peve Produce and Feeds in Hopkins.

Herb was drafted into the United States Army in February 1953. He served active duty for the next 24 months including 16 months in Korea. Herb returned from honorably serving his country in January 1955 and got engaged to Carol Jean Mendenhall at the Hopkins ball field. They were married May 29, 1955 at the Hopkins Christian Church Parsonage with Reverend A. V. Hart officiating. To this union Victoria Faith was born March 18, 1956.

In 1961 the family moved from Hopkins to Bedford and Herb went to work for S.K. Mendenhall at Taylor County Motor. As the business grew and changed, Herb continued working for son-in-law, Dick, and grandson, Tim, at Taylor County Motor and D&T Repair until January 2018 when his health no longer allowed him to continue. He received the prestigious Accounting Excellence Award from Ford Motor Company for 40 consecutive years of service.

Herb was honored to be asked to join Lions Club International in 1973 and over the course of 45 years had many travels and experiences gaining lifelong friendships. He was a very proud working member and held many offices within the local chapter as well as at the state level of the club. Twice, Herb was bestowed the highest level of honor within Lions Club by receiving the International President's Award.

Other hobbies and interests of Herb's included woodworking, watching and feeding birds and squirrels, and collecting squirrel figurines.

Preceding Herbert in death were his parents; in-laws, S.K. and Helen Mendenhall; sister, Darlene Fine; and son-in-law, Dick Guilliatt.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeanie Killam; daughter, Victoria Guilliatt; granddaughter, Stefanie (Kevin) Nickell; grandson, Tim (Sarah) Guilliatt; great-granddaughters, Kali and Kambri Nickell; another great-grandchild on the way; and sister-in-law, Kae Eberle

Long, Mateo Gabriiel - Mateo Gabriiel Long was born Thursday, December 3, 2020 in Council Bluffs, Iowa the son of Cody William Long and Liizett Janet (Quintanilla) Long. Mateo only lived a short while, long enough to be baptized by Reverend Tim Maxa and entered into Jesus arms shortly thereafter.

Left to cherish Mateo's memory are his parents, Cody and Liizett Long and his four siblings, Jesyca age 7, Azer age 6, Eliiot age 4 and Xander age 1, all of Lenox, Iowa; his maternal grandparents, Juanita (Janie) and Guy Matson of Lenox, Iowa; his paternal grandparents, Michele and Michael Long of Bedford, Iowa; his great-grandparents, Ron and Vickie Filmer of Victor, Iowa; along with several aunts, uncles, cousins and other family members.

Preceding Mateo in life is his maternal great-grandparents, Maria and Ramon Quintanilla

Karol Lynn “Mike” Bailey was born October 8, 1945, in Creston to George Franklin Bailey, Sr and Lucille Mae (King) Bailey.  She attended Elementary, Jr. High and Highschool at Clearfield Community Schools, Graduating Highschool from Clearfield in 1964.  During high school Mike played basketball, ran track, was a cheerleader, a member of the high school band and enjoyed watching Dwight play baseball.

After graduation, Mike attended AIB in Des Moines, graduating in 1965 with a degree in Typing and Key Punch.  From there, she worked in Creston as a Key Punch Operator and married Dwight that same year, on November 7, 1965.  From 1966-1969 Mike worked from Dannen Elevator and Doc Gordon as a bookkeeper and secretary, until Dwight was drafted in the Army in 1969.  She and Dwight moved to Fort Ord, CA, driving their ’66 Chevelle SS on its first major road trip to where Dwight would be stationed for the next two years.   Mike faithfully wrote weekly letters while they lived in California to her parents, Dwight’s parents, their family, and friends. They had many visitors from Iowa come and stay while they were there, with many pictures and memories of that time. 

In 1971, Mike & Dwight returned home to Clearfield where Mike went to work for her mom, Lucille at the Clearfield Chronicle; where she would continue to work help putting out the weekly paper until George and Lucille retired in 1994.   On October 9, 1974, Courtney Kay was born to Mike and Dwight, only missing being born on Mike’s birthday by 29 minutes.  Those next few years kept Mike quite busy.  In 1976 Dwight and Mike bought E&E Grocery from Dwight’s parents, Earl, and Eileen, thus Mike began a second career in the grocery and retail business, along with the weekly publication of the Clearfield Chronicle.  In 2004, Dwight & Mike built Mickey D’s Bar in Clearfield, retiring from there in 2015, and eventually moving to Treynor then onto Griswold. 

Throughout Mike’s life she enjoyed spending time with Dwight, watching Courtney grow up, along with her nieces and nephews, always participating in anything they were doing.  She loved to be outside, sunbathe, golf on ladies and couples night weekly, was an avid runner, loved going to the Chicken Inn for weekend dances in the Chevelle, playing cards with friends on a Saturday night, sing karaoke, vacation with family and watching her grandchildren grow up.  Each summer her grandchildren Alex, Trey and Kaden would come to stay with Nana and Poppy - Mike would always make sure there was fishing, swimming, golfing, picnic afternoons, movies, games, etc involved.  And she never missed an event they participated in.  She loved every minute of it and every minute of life.  She was loved by all and will be dearly missed by all.

Mike passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 17, 2020 at the Griswold Skilled Care and Rehabilitation Center in Griswold. Mike was preceded in death by her parents, George Sr., and Lucille Bailey; her sister, Pauletta Burgher; her mother and father-in law, Earl Dwight, Sr. and Eileen Matheny. 

Those that continue and live on in Mike’s legacy are her husband of 54 years, Dwight Matheny, residing in Griswold; daughter, Courtney Snyder-Burhenne and her husband Jason of Treynor; her grandchildren, Alex (Snyder) Stone, 26; Trey Snyder, 23 and Kaden Snyder, 16; her brother, George Bailey, Jr. and friend Janie, Nashville, TN; sister-in-law, Linda (Brownrigg) Bailey, Clearfield; sister-in-law Karen Elliott, Clearfield; sister-in-law Donna Lou Moore and her husband Keith, Creston; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Celebration of Life for Mike will be held at Bootleggers in Clearfield on August 22, 2020 from 2-4p

Maynes, Mia Faith - Mia Faith Maynes, the only daughter of Montgomery Wade Maynes and Sydney Faith Mary Pontius-Maynes, was born November 12, 2019 in Omaha, Nebraska. Mia returned home to Heaven on Sunday, December 20, 2020 at the Universitiy of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of thirteen months. She is dearly loved by her family and will forever be cherished by them.

Forever holding her memory precious are her mom and dad: Sydney and Monty Maynes, Lenox, Iowa; grandparents: Kim and Gary Pontius, Corning, Iowa; and Lyle and Bobbi Maynes, Corning, Iowa; great-grandparents: Larry and Dee Larson, Gallatin, Missouri; her uncle: Hunter (Briana) Pontius, Stationed in Japan; aunt: Kennedi (Ethan) Cretsinger, Coon Rapids, Iowa; uncle: Chase Maynes (significant other – Taylor Foster), Lenox, Iowa; cousins: Liam & Palmer Cretsinger; and her kitten, Martin.

Morris, Beverly Ruth Wilson - An Open Visitation for Beverly Morris, 86, of Iowa City, Iowa, formerly of Bedford, Iowa will be Wednesday, October 7, 2020 from 5-7 PM at Cummings Family Funeral Home. A private committal service will be held Thursday, October 8, 2020. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date when Covid-19 concerns lessen.

Beverly Ruth (Wilson) Morris was born to Helen (Bradshaw) and Roscoe Wilson on September 27, 1934. Beverly grew up in Van Wert, Iowa where she attended and graduated from the Van Wert Community Schools. Beverly Always had a love of learning and education. She was valedictorian of her class and had a full ride scholarship waiting for her at Tarkio College in Tarkio Missouri.

Even though Beverly loved education, she had met the love of her life at Van Wert Community Schools and she chose to marry Don and make a life together and pursue their educational goals together.

Beverly was married to Donald Dean Morris on December 18, 1951. She still had one semester of her senior year in high school, but Don had been drafted into the Marine Corps and was only home on a short furlough before shipping out to Korea, so she finished her high school career as a married woman.

During the two years Don served in Korea, Beverly worked at the Van Wert telephone office.

In 1953 Don got off the bus in Van Wert and was there to take his wife to California with him as he served out the rest of his commitment to the Marine Corps. Don and Beverly bought a car and returned to San Diego where they lived for the next 2 years. They lived in a little shack on the beach in Ocean City California. Beverly kept busy doing secretarial work on and off the base, and doing lots of child care.

In 1955 after Don’s honorable discharge from the USMC they took a month long drive from California to Canada exploring every state and sight along the way This is where their love of domestic travel grew. Their travels together as a couple and later as parents with their daughter were where some of their best memories were made.

Beverly and Don then moved to Chicago where Donnie attended college at DeVry Institute. They both worked full time and had odd jobs to meet their expenses. They then returned to Van Wert, Iowa where Beverly returned to the Van Wert telephone office and Donnie worked on Road and Bridge projects across Iowa, Illinois and Missouri.

Then one day they received a call and Donnie was hired as assistant engineer to Taylor County Road department.

They knew immediately that Bedford was where they belonged. They were welcomed to the town with open arms and met many people that became life long friends. The small community was busy and just what they wanted to raise a family.

Beverly went to work at the Bedford Telephone office initially as a board operator and then became Chief operator until 1963 when the phone company went dial. Beverly then worked for the State Savings Bank.

Their daughter Donola Dee was born on June 22, 1968 and their family was whole. Beverly was a proud and happy mother. Donola was lucky to always have her mom by her side working hard to get opportunities for her child and other children while balancing working outside the home too. Beverly volunteered as a Sunday School teacher, Bible school teacher and was a devoted and motivated 4-H leader for the Loyal Legion 4-H club.

Through the late 60’s, the 70’s and early 80’s Beverly continued to work at the State Savings bank. She also worked for The Country Boys lumber yard, The Bedford Building supply and Lucas products doing books.

In the late 80’s during the farm crisis Beverly took a job at a factory in Corning and worked there until the mid 1990’s, when she took her last job before retirement as a dispatcher and jailer at the Taylor County Sheriffs department.

In 1990 Don and Beverly gained a son, James Allen Leong. Jim and Donola had 2 children, AJ and Alex. Donnie and both of Jimi’s parents had passed away before getting to know their grandkids, so Bev joked that since she was the only living grandparent she had to make up for the spoiling the other 3 would of done. Beverly lived off and on in Iowa City helping her family. Her grandchildren adore her and were blessed to have her as a very involved grandmother.

Beverly was a proud member of the United Christian Presbyterian Church where she served in many different roles from Sunday School teacher, Elder, Deacon, Moderator to name a few. In her retirement years she thoroughly enjoyed the Womens group and quilting Wednesdays.

Beverly was very community orientated person who loved being involved. She was a long time member of the Lioness club, JT club, American Legion Auxiliary, Young Mother sponsor, and a member of the PTA for the Bedford Schools. She was a proud member of the Coffee Girls and 4-Ever Young.

Beverly was a loyal hard worker who always put her heart into whatever she was working on. She loved her family and friends. Beverly lit up a room with her positivity and faith. Her kindness knew no strangers.

Beverly, Don and Donola were only children, but never lonely as their family was never limited to blood lines.

Beverly was proceeded in death by her parents Helen and Roscoe Wilson, Her spouse Donald Dean Morris.

She is survived by her daughter Donola, son-in-law Jim and grandchildren AJ and Alex. And Adopted Granddaughter Riley Brannian.

Beverly grew up in a large family of cousins that were and are still near and dear to her heart. Most of them are still living.

Edith Marie (Mrs. Hollis) Naven, 96, of Corning, Iowa, peacefully entered into eternal rest Thursday evening, July 23, 2020, at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa.

Mrs. Naven, the former Edith Marie Fine was born at rural Siam, the third of four daughters of the late Ralph Douglas and Viva Amelia (Shields) Fine. She attended Siam School and graduated from New Market High School in 1941. Edith was united in marriage to Hollis Walter Naven, June 1, 1944, at McPherson, Kansas. During their 65 years together, the couple resided on farms near Guss, Bedford and Lenox. They moved back to the Naven family homestead, south of Corning where they resided for 32 years before moving to Clarinda. Hollis preceded Edith in death October 19, 2009.

“Aunt Edie” will be fondly remembered for starched aprons worn at the Lenox Cafe, macaroni and cheese, Bishop chocolate cream pies, Halloween caramel corn, riced potatoes, iced tea with sugar, cheeseburgers, orange jello carrot pineapple salad, lemon drops, cameras/flash cubes/pictures, underlining of words, red cars and lipstick, cats and dogs, flowers (especially pansies), occasional word blurting, picnics with bug spray, soft-spoken humor, gentleness, and shopping trips with “The Sisters.”

Family was an important part of Edith’s life. Surviving are her sister, Hope Amelia Pratt of Clarinda; sisters-in-law, Mildred VanPelt of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Linnea Naven of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces and nephews, Patricia (Douglas) Schultz, Gordon (Martha) Pratt, Eleanor Jo (Lewis) Blackney, Billie Joyce (Karl) Hodge, Allen (Linda) Fishell, Monte (Brenda) Fishell, Aaron (Jessica) Fishell, James (Donelle) Naven, Sheila (Jeff) Lang and Jerry (Paula) Naven; great-nieces and great-nephews, Sarah, Diane, Aaron, Austin, Andrea, Joey, Amy, Billy, Alana, Courtney, Taylor, Tyne, Ashley, Brandi, Jeremy, Cory, Justin, Tyler and Ryan.

Also preceding Edith in death were sisters and brothers-in-law, Elsie Rose and Richard “Dick” Burton, Lucille Irene and George Stanley, Bill Pratt, Paul Fishell, Howard VanPelt, Norman Naven and a nephew, Eric Fishell.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2020, at Prairie Rose Cemetery, Corning with Ray Ackerman officiating. Burial will follow

Nicholson, John Robert - John Robert Nicholson, the son of Richard “Rick” Rowland and Linda Ann (Boyer) Nicholson, was born on August 27, 1969, in Corning, Iowa.  John entered eternal rest Friday, September 11, 2020, at his home at the age of fifty-one years.
John graduated from Corning High School. On May 15, 1993, John married Angela Marie Higgins at his parent’s house in Corning. Two children: Dalton and Dallas blessed this union. John was a lifelong farmer. He and his family operated a dairy farm for many years and he later had a herd of stock cows. In addition to raising livestock he grew corn, soybeans, and hay. Later in life he operated a hay grinder for Rick Jackson. 
John enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. He liked to cruise and check on crops. He never knew a stranger and was a person who you could always count on for a good laugh.

Nicholson, Richard "Bill"Willard - Bill Nicholson, 54, of Nodaway, entered eternal rest on Thursday, December 17, 2020 at his parent’s home in rural Corning. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 20, 2020 at Pearson Family Funeral Service and Cremation Center in Corning, with Pastor Tim Maxa Officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Guss.

Richard “Bill” Willard Nicholson, the son of Richard “Rick” Rowland and Linda Ann (Boyer) Nicholson, was born on November 2, 1966 in Corning, Iowa. Bill attended School in Corning and was active in football, basketball, FFA, and 4-H. He graduated from Corning High School with the class of 1985. On March 25, 1991 Bill married Christine Lena Stone in Corning. Four children would bless this union: Candice, Richard, Luke and Carly.

Bill’s passion in life was farming, a passion that began working on his parent’s dairy farm. When he was 18 years old, he sold his Corvette to purchase his own dairy cattle. In 2008 he turned his farming over to a cow-calf operation. In addition to cattle, he raised corn, soybeans and hay. Bill partnered with his father and late brother, John on the farming operations. In 2012 Bill and Christine operated a food truck for 3 years, catering many different events along the way. Starting in 2016 Bill ran the café at the Bedford Country club for a few years.

Bill enjoyed riding his motorcycle, playing in a basketball league and cruising and hunting rabbits with his dogs, Bug and Dani. He also liked to participate in truck-pulls and recently purchased a new truck to pull with. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of A.B.A.T.E. of Iowa.

Left to cherish Bill’s memory is his wife, Christine Nicholson of Nodaway; children: Candice Sanson and husband Cody of New Market, Richard Nicholson and wife Ranae of Ankeny, Luke Nicholson and wife Brooke of Corning and Carly Nicholson and significant other Zach Wander of Creston; six grandchildren: Serenity, Ryan, Connor, Sophia, Tyler and Elliot; parents, Rick and Linda Nicholson of Corning; sisters, Becky Pritchard and husband Blake of Brooks and Kim Bashor and husband Matt of Lenox; sister-in-law, Angie Nicholson of Corning; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Phillips, Joseph Lyndon - Joseph Phillips, 91, of Corning, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at his daughter’s home in rural Lenox, Iowa. An Open Visitation will be held 8:00 A.M., - 6:00 P.M., Monday, November 2, 2020, at Pearson Family Funeral Service & Cremation Center, 701 7th Street, Corning, Iowa. Burial will be at the North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa, at a later date.

Joseph Lyndon Phillips was born in Indianola on October 2, 1929 to Ronald Earl Phillips and Ermal Olive (Hudson). Sometime before he entered first grade, the family moved to Lenox. Before the end of Joe’s first grade year, the family moved again to Corning. This was a move that stuck in his mind, because of the difference in the learning process between the two schools. Growing up during the depression, forced many to make due when they could. Joe remembers walking the railroad tracks picking up coal that had fallen off the railroad cars and taking it home to help heat their house. When he was 10, he was breaking in horses for nearby neighbors to help with the family income. Joe had an orneriness about him, but also a sense of fairness and doing what is right. An incident a couple of weeks before graduation, led to Joe not graduating with his class because of his refusal to apologize for the said incident. This did not stop him from entering the National Guard before he was 18, and receiving his GED after enrollment. It was 1947 when Joe entered the National Guard, which took him through multiple training camps and earning several certificates throughout the years and by the end of those years he was promoted to Major. In between guard duties, in the first years, he also worked at the REC as a lineman.

Joe’s interest in flying was also developed early in adulthood. This interest led him to the National Air Guard and going through aviation mechanical training schools in the 60’s, as well as officers training school. Beginning in 1960, after four years of traveling to Georgia, Alabama, West Virginia (twice), and Texas for the military training camps, Joe settled the family back in Corning and in the basement house he had built in the middle 50’s after his marriage to Jeanette Jones of Lenox on October 2, 1949. Four daughters were born to this union between 1953 and 1960. A house was built on top of the basement house in 1964 shortly after moving back to Corning. At this time, Joe was doing a variety of jobs. His main interest in flying led him to help the Roland Funeral Home at times and also the Adams County Sheriff’s Department. Then when he was at the right place at the right time, he ended up being hired by the NFO as their pilot. He spent many days away from home flying for the NFO. When he was home, he was almost always at the airport, keeping his plane in flying condition, making sure lights worked at the airport, coming out to unlock the gas pump when it was needed, helping other pilots, and many other chores. Tragically, in 1978, Jeanette lost her battle of pancreatic cancer. In 1979 Joe remarried Karen Burton, Joe was no longer flying for the NFO and his adventures with different ideas led him to raising ostriches, selling insurance, machine sheds, salesman for Midwest Products, and whatever flying jobs came his way. Karen died in 2001 and Joe moved into Corning. His time living in Corning brought him to many city council meetings, spending time helping with the American Legion, taking his daily walks and always loving the conversations he came across. He was always available to help out with his daughters and grandkids and he will be missed greatly.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters: Gail (Richard Wilker), Kathy Jo Bissell, Lee Ann Johnston, Lynn (Dave) Lundquist; step-daughter Janet Burton; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Pratt, Darrell Max - Darrell Max Pratt, age 99, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Thursday, November 5, 2020, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Darrell was born December 24, 1920, in Clarinda, Iowa, the son of Roy and Edith (Benson) Pratt. He was raised in New Market, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1938. Darrell was united in marriage to Dorris Slaight on April 12, 1940, in Clarinda. They lived on the Pratt family farm for one year and moved to Galesburg, Illinois where they lived a short time before moving back to the farm. They farmed for 15 years and moved to Red Oak in 1957. Darrell worked for Farm Bureau, BF Goodrich, Lindsay Water Softener Co. and was a lay speaker for several area churches. He retired after being an Equitable Life Insurance Agent for 30 years. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, the Red Oak Optimist Club, and was a proud member of the Red Oak Masonic Lodge #162. He enjoyed time spent at his computer working on ancestry and making photos. He loved square dancing, boating, fishing, and traveling with Dorris, visiting all 50 states. Darrell found the most joy by spending time with his family and the many dear friends of he and Dorris.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife: Dorris on April 5, 2014; daughter: Debra Hoesing; sister: Maxine Brooks; brothers: Keith and Kenneth Pratt; daughter-in-law: Karen Pratt; son-in-law: Michael Hoesing; and great grandson: Connor Smith. Survivors include his children: David Pratt and wife Judy of Perry, IA; Doug Pratt and wife Karen of Red Oak, IA; and Dan Pratt and wife Vicki of Red Oak, IA; 15 grandchildren: Ron Pratt; Don Pratt and wife Kathy; Stephanie Mitra and husband Sumit; Kim Wagoner and husband George; DeAnn Birt and husband Rob; Keri Straw and husband Rod; Kirk Pratt and wife Sarah; Dana Nelson and husband Steve; Darla Dovel and husband Chris; Danelle Bruce and husband Scott; Valerie Smith; Melissa Gallant; Jason Richmond; Kelly Hoesing; and Sean Hoesing; 33 great grandchildren; 18 great great grandchildren; 1 great great great grandchild; and many other relatives and friends.

A private family graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery. There will be open viewing and visitation from Noon until 7 PM on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Preston, Elsie Ellen Walston - Elsie Ellen Preston was born January 10, 1923, in Sheridan, Missouri, the sixth of eleven children born to Thomas Walter Walston and Cora May (Weese) Walston. She attended Delphos Consolidated School in Ringgold County. When she was in seventh grade the family moved to Taylor County where she graduated from Bedford High School with the Class of 1941. After high school, she attended Northwest Missouri State College where she received her Teaching Certificate, and taught country school for four years. In 1943, she took a train to California to work at the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation making B-24 Aircrafts during World War II. In May of 1945 she returned to Iowa where she met her future husband Clifford Preston. The couple was united in marriage on March 10, 1948 at the Methodist Parsonage in Lenox. The couple made their home near Lenox where they maintained their farm and raised their family. Two sons were born to bless this union, Charles and Tom.

Elsie worked as a bookkeeper in Lenox at the Chevrolet Dealership, later taking a position in Creston as Bookkeeper for the Ford Dealership, a position she held for over 18 years. During this time she enjoyed raising her family, gardening, raising chickens, and going door-to-door to sell Minnesota Woolen Clothing. Elsie enjoyed annual family reunions, bowling, crocheting, cooking, playing cards and was a devoted member of the Lenox United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Bridge Clubs and The Neighborhood Club, always looking forward to their monthly get-togethers. Elsie and Clifford enjoyed attending Army reunions for many years, traveling throughout the United States. They also enjoyed traveling to visit many family and friends. Her children, grandchildren, great- grandchildren and great-great-grandchild were her true joy in life.

Left to cherish Elsie’s memory are her two sons, Charles Preston of Omaha, Nebraska; and Tom Preston and wife Rene of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchild; along with many other family members and friends.

Richards, Betty Eleanor - Betty Eleanor Richards was born November 30, 1957, in Council Bluffs, Iowa the daughter of Paul Richards and Eathel (Reed) Richards. She passed away at the age of 62, on September 27, 2020, at 7:00 PM at the Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston, Iowa.

Betty loved her beloved pets such as her cats and dogs. Her favorite color was light green. She lived to play board/card games with family and friends. Betty loved art such as coloring and doing crafts. She loved to cook, especially during the holidays. Betty would set aside time to talk to her loved ones on the phone on a daily basis, which she enjoyed so very much. Betty worked as a CNA at several facilities including the Bedford, Iowa Care Center. She later started volunteering at the Bedford Neighborhood Center, which eventually turned into a part-time job. She enjoyed working with other volunteers and her beloved Supervisor, Lydia Brumfield.

Betty is survived by her children, Katie Baylor and husband Billy; Jennifer Steffen and her three children, Isaiah, Samantha, Michael Carey and two great-granddaughters, Willow-Elaine Annalise Carey, Opal Liberty-Eleanor Kerwin; a brother, Donald Reed and three sisters, Ruth Peterson, Terry Richards and Tammy Richards.

Wilbur Dean Rowe was born in rural Nodaway County, Missouri on April 8, 1932, the son of Oakley Rowe and Anna (Barber) Rowe. He grew up attending rural schools in the area and then attended high school in Sheridan, Missouri where he met and married Patsy (Brown) Rowe. Together they were blessed with five children, three girls and two boys.

The couple moved to their current farm in 1958, where Wilbur resided until his passing. Wilbur loved the farm. He enjoyed caring for and raising livestock. Wilbur enjoyed welding and fabrication work. There wasn’t much Wilbur couldn’t make or fix! Wilbur was also a great horseman. He enjoyed being in the Bedford Saddle Club and hunting coyotes when time allowed. He loved being around all his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish Wilbur’s life are his children Vickie Backhus and Bud Patterson of Centennial, Colorado; son, Dean Rowe and wife Susan of Bedford, Iowa; daughter, Donna Bane and husband Ron of Lorimor, Iowa; and son, Jim Rowe and wife Julie of Bedford, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren; twenty five great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; son-in-law, Roger Poore; along with many other relatives and friends.

Doris Elaine Hanson Schuelke, the youngest of six children, was born on a farm southeast of Mead, Nebraska, on September 10, 1928, to Elmer Rutherford and Lizzie Belle Hanson. She attended country school until 8th grade, when it closed. Then Doris attended and graduated from Mead High School in May 1944 at the age of 15. She had planned to enlist in the U.S. Navy Cadet Nurse Corps for nurses training. World War II ended as did the program. In September she enrolled in a Jr. Secretarial Course at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where she studied shorthand.

September 1945 she was hired as secretary to the head of the Claims Division of the U. S. Employment Service in Lincoln. Nine months later, she accepted a job as secretary to the Nebraska State Representative for the March of Dimes. She continued working there until December 2, 1951 when she married Junior Dale Schuelke, a farmer from Ashland, Nebraska, whom she had met at a dance a few years earlier. They loved dancing to the big bands that played the ballrooms in the Lincoln and Omaha area.

Since Junior did not wish to have a “wife that worked”, Doris left her 9-5 job as secretary to become a farm wife and mother, gardener, and poultry raiser. She raised fryers and delivered eggs on a regular weekly route to a restaurant and nursing homes inLincoln. The drought years of l953, l954 and l955 caused them to lose their corn crop three years in a row. They began looking for a farm in western Iowa and in January l958 moved to the farm northeast of Bedford, Iowa, where they resided until Junior’s death April 14, 2009.

To this union were born four sons: Mark Allen, Steven Dale, Brian Eugene, Dennis David and a daughter, Linda Kay.

Doris gardened, canned fruits and vegetables, sewed, taught Sunday School and Bible School at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield. She held various offices in United Methodist Women. She served as leader of the Gay Maidens 4-H Club of Conway for five years. She also served on the 4-H Extension Council.

As the boys began leaving home to attend college, Doris was drafted into helping with harvest, hauling in the grain to the bins and elevator. She continued hauling grain until she was 75 years old when they retired from farming. Though farming brought long tiring days, she and Junior enjoyed working together but also enjoyed traveling together.

While the kids were growing up, a camping trip was taken each summer - beginning with Jr’s brother’s borrowed army tent and a camping stove obtained with S&H Green Stamps. As Junior was a member of the Clearfield Lions Club, the family also spent time at the Iowa State Fair for many years helping with the shuttle buses. Camping evolved from the borrowed tent to a fold-down camper to a travel trailer and finally a fifth wheel camper.

An unimproved lot at Sun Valley Lake at Ellston was purchased in l972. A mobile home was set up and 23 years of boating and fishing with children, grandchildren and friends were enjoyed. Doris really enjoyed fishing. She and Jr. Rv’d to Alaska in l993 where she caught her first salmon. They also traveled to Hawaii and eventually traveled in all 50 states.

In March 1950 Doris had enjoyed the privilege of traveling to Europe with her mother and father to visit relatives in Denmark and Sweden. They sailed from New York City to Southampton, England, on the original Queen Elizabeth ocean liner. They toured London, crossed the English Channel, then traveled by train to Copenhagen, Denmark and then on to southern Sweden. June 1st they left Sweden and traveled by bus on a 10-day bus trip to Paris, then on by boat-train to LeHavre, France, where they sailed home to America on the Mauritania.

Doris and Junior returned to visit relatives in Sweden in l991 and again in 2006. In 1996 while assisting with the Clearfield Lions Club shuttle-bus operation, they met a farming couple from the north island of New Zealand, John and Ann McCutcheon. Doris & Junior visited them on a trip to Australia and New Zealand in l999. Each summer (New Zealand’s winter) John and Ann traveled to the US and visited Doris and Junior. In 2006 they invited Doris & Junior to attend their son’s wedding in NZ. John passed away a few years later. Doris traveled to visit Ann in 2010 following Junior’s death.

Other trips Junior and Doris enjoyed were visits to Japan, China and Hong Kong, a Panama Canal cruise visiting Costa Rica, Panama, Columbia, S.A., Curacao, and the Dominican Republic, and trips into Mexico. After the children left home, winters found them RV-ing to Arizona and to Alamo Rec-Veh Park, Alamo, Texas. In 1995 they purchased a small mobile home there. Doris assisted Junior with his country western music jam for several years. She served on the Alamo Rec-Veh Park Activity Board as well as singing in the Alamo Rec-Veh Park Church Choir for years.

Doris was preceded in death by her father and mother, sisters Mildred (Earl) Robbins and Lorraine (Fred) Retzlaff; brothers Donald (Luella), Lyle (Edith) and Forrest (Rose); and her husband Junior Schuelke

Dennis Ivan Shackelford was born May 05, 1940 in Iowa City to Wayne and Mildred (Dutler) Shackelford. He passed away on October 29, 2020 at his home surrounded by family.

Dennis grew up in Guthrie Center, Iowa graduating from high school in 1959. He was in the Navy from 1963-1967, stationed in San Diego. While in the Navy Dennis was married and had two daughters, Diana and Vicky.

Upon returning to Iowa Dennis began his career with the Department of Natural Resources in 1970. After moving to Bedford in 1972 Dennis began working at the Lake of Three Fires State Park, where he retired from in 2002. On November 10, 1972 he was united in marriage to Mary Dyer. Two children were born to bless this union, Tony and Joy.

Dennis was involved with the Taylor County Sheriff’s Posse, Taylor County Fair Board, Bedford Booster Club and John F. Hardin American Legion Post 164.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife Mary of the home, son Tony (Melinda) Shackelford of Clarinda and daughter Joy (Robert) Coleman of Lenox, three granddaughters Erika Coleman, Kylie and Kenzie Shackelford and one grandson Ethan Coleman. He is also survived by one brother Harry (Sue) Shackelford and one brother-in-law, Greg (Barb) Dyer, many nieces, nephews and a host of cousins.

David was born on Nov. 7, 1957 at Millard, NE, to Wilfred and Fern (Benke) Smith. He was raised and educated in Millard, NE and New Market, IA. He then attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO.

On Sept. 25, 2004 he married Carla Weber at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, IA. The couple made their home in Indianola, IA for 16 years before moving to Remsen, IA.

David enjoyed spending time with family, his nieces, nephews especially Andy and Ruthie. He loved his dogs Madi and Buster. He enjoyed antiquing and going to casinos.

Survivors include, his wife Carla of Remsen; his brother Scott Smith of Mascoutah, IL; sister-in-law, Christi (Terry) Hoffman of Remsen; brother-in-law, Rick (Lisa) Weber of Alton, IA; several nieces and nephews.

Stevenson, Doris "Dori" L. Brumfield - Doris L. Stevenson -- known as "Dori" to her friends -- passed away peacefully on the morning of August 19, 2020, surrounded by family. She was 92 years old.

Mrs. Stevenson was born in Blockton, Iowa on January 4, 1928 to James H. and Florence (Bullock) Brumfield. She graduated from Blockton High School in 1945, and married James R. Stevenson on October 4, 1947. They lived in Des Moines, Iowa, where they raised two children. Mrs. Stevenson and her husband purchased a lakeside vacation cabin in Crosslake, Minn. in 1978, eventually moving up north full time in 1986.

Mrs. Stevenson was an accomplished cook and the consummate hostess. Family members and other guests in her home were always treated to delicious breakfasts each morning, evening hors d'oeuvres, and one-of-a-kind meals nightly during their stay. Together, she and her husband created a beautifully furnished and decorated home. She had a story for how they acquired every possession, and why it became a part of their home. Mrs. Stevenson showed great business acumen, handling all the household finances and investments, and working as business manager/accountant for her husband's commercial art studio. She loved music - especially classical, hymns, Blossom Dearie, ABBA, and Barry Manilow - and knew just about every lyric to her favorites. Rarely an hour passed by that she didn't spontaneously burst into song while going about her day.

Mrs. Stevenson leaves behind many family members who each had their own unique relationship with this incredibly special lady. She and her husband, Jim, who passed away in January 2011, are now reunited in the glorious kingdom of Heaven.

Mrs. Stevenson is survived by two children, Jim (Barbara) Stevenson of Liberty, Mo., and Claudia Stevenson of Des Moines, Iowa. She was affectionately known as "Bama" by her four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Stevenson will be laid to rest at Pinewood Cemetery, 13852 County Road 36, Crosslake, Minn. A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 25 at 12 p.m. at Pinewood Cemetery, 13852 County Road 36, Crosslake, Minn. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made directly to the family.

Strong, Wayne - A Private Family Funeral for Wayne Strong, age 97, of Bedford, Iowa, will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2020. Open visitation will be held Friday, August 14, 2020 from 12 PM until 6 PM at Cummings Family Funeral Home. Interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery.

Wayne Strong was born December 5, 1922 to Earl and Della (West) Strong in Pleasant Twp., Cass County, Iowa and entered into rest Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa.

With the exception of living a few years in Arkansas during his childhood, Wayne spent his entire life living in Iowa.

Wayne was united in marriage February 15, 1951 to Katherine Winger at Maryville, MO. They were blessed with four children; Duane, Linda, Judy and Dwight. They lived on a farm west of Bedford for 64 years before moving to Bedford where they resided for 4 ½ years.

Wayne enjoyed being a farmer and farmed the majority of his life. He was a lifetime member of the Taylor County Fair Board. He and Katherine worked for many years as groundskeepers as well as helping with the fair. Wayne and Katherine camped at the same site at the Iowa State Fair for 38 years making many friends that they enjoyed seeing every year. Wayne enjoyed Saturday nights at the Junction Café, playing pitch, attending tractor and pickup pulls. He loved to fish and enjoyed finding the hidden horseshoe in his Farm & Ranch Living magazine. Wayne loved driving his tractor in the Bedford and New Market 4th of July parades. He made the best chocolate homemade ice cream and always loved eating ice cream.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Wayne loved visiting and laughing with his family. He was a quiet, soft spoken man with a good sense of humor.

Wayne is preceded in death by his parents; sisters Leila Hawhee, Iola Thomas, Hazel Brown, Betty Pfander; brothers Lester Strong and Dale Strong; as well as a great granddaughter, Mallory Strong.

He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him. Earl Lee Tribolet was born June 22, 1946 in Maryville, Missouri to Clarence and Inez (Akers) Tribolet. Earl lived on a farm with his family northwest of Gravity, Iowa and attended the Wesley School. In 1952 the family moved to a farm northwest of Bedford where Earl attended the Bailey School through the 8th grade. He then attended Bedford High School and graduated in 1964.

Earl and older brother Everett grew up helping on the farm. They also found many, many things to get into. Everett always liked to share that he convinced Earl to eat an ornamental Christmas pepper. Someone's britches got tanned for that incident!

Earl joined the United States Army February 14, 1967. He trained to become a radio operator and served in Vietnam from October 1968 to October 1969. Earl completed his enlistment February 28, 1973. Following his honorable discharge he accepted Everett's invitation to join him in the farming operation. Earl milked a dairy herd for many years and also enjoyed operating his own metal fabrication business.

Earl met the "love of his life", Cindy Barcus, and the couple was married June 8, 1974. On February 23, 1987 daughter Lisa joined the family and made their life complete. Earl belonged to many organizations through the years including a lifetime member of the Bedford American Legion Post 164, Taylor County Cattlemen, Taylor County Pork Producers, ASCS County committeeman, Benton Township Trustee and Bedford Saddle Club.

Earl enjoyed deer hunting, square dancing and traveling. His greatest love was his family and spending time with them.

Earl is preceded in death by his wife, Cindy Tribolet; parents, Clarence and Inez Tribolet; brother, Troy Tribolet; mother-in-law, Bernadine Everhart and niece; Kristen Barcus. Turner, Charles "Chuck" Lynn - Charles “Chuck” Turner passed away December 3, 2020, at Bryan West Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska after an illness. Charles Lynn Turner was born June 20, 1938, to Wendell R. and Joan (Jones) Turner in Van Meter, Iowa. He was the oldest of 13 children. As a child, they moved around a lot, but he graduated from high school in 1956 from Menlo, Iowa.

In August 1958, Chuck joined the Army and spent an impressive 22 years and 11 months. He was in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and received numerous medals. (National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Seventh Award, Vietnam Service Medal with Five Service Stars, Bronze Star Medal, Two Overseas Service Bars, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Humanitarian service medal, Expert (Rifle M-16), and Meritorious Service Medal.) After the military he returned to Iowa and attended Iowa Western Community College and graduated in 1984 with a degree, Associate in Applied Science.

April 6, 1966, Charles was united in marriage to Stella Mae and her two children, Ray, and Mary. After he retired from the Army, Charles and Stella purchased an acreage in New Market, Iowa. He worked at Mount Arbor Nursery until he retired. Chuck loved to be a hobby farmer. He was well known for his goats and chickens.

Chuck was a life-long member of the Clarinda Church of God. In 1981, he and his wife Stella found their home Church and became members. Over the years Chuck taught many kids in Sunday School and occasionally on Wednesday nights. He also taught the adults Sunday School class in his later years. He loved God and his Church and gave his all to whatever the Pastors asked of him. Chuck was always the "cook" (burnt pancakes or not) for our breakfasts at the men's fellowships. He cooked many years for the Midlands region Church of God Youth Camps feeding hundreds of kids each year. He not only taught & told kids and everyone how to live for Christ, but he lived it by example of his own life.

He is preceded in death by his wife Stella, parents, sisters, Mary, Judy, Jean and Joan and brother Richard.

Charles is survived by his two children, Ray Turner of Gravity, Iowa, and Mary (Buster) Vorpagel of Marlow, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Kelli Larson, Kyle Turner and Rebecca Picasso; great-grandchildren, Jenessa, Bentlee, Alyssa, Leo, and Ace; sisters, Jane (Bill) Workman, Audrey (Larry) Cammack and Patricia (Larry) Lewellyn; brothers, Robert (Sally) Turner, Max Turner and Raymond Turner, Van (Dawn) Turner along with many other special adopted family and friends

Weaver, Phillip - Philip Weaver was born in Green County, Indiana, Feb 5th, 1853. He departed this life May 7th, 1926 age 73 years, 3 months and two days. At the age of 9 years he moved with his parents to Page County, Iowa, where he has spent the greater part of his life.

He was united in marriage April 26, 1881 to Miss Julia A. Welch. To this union were born seven children, four girls and 3 boys, one girl preceding him in death 16 years ago. He also had three brothers and six sisters who preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his departure a wife and six children, Addie Lewis of Red Cloud, Nebraska, Alma Hunter of Bedford, Iowa, Melvin of St Joseph, Mo., Asel and Clyde Weaver of Guss and Grace Warrick of Clarinda, 13 grandchildren, 4 nieces and 2 nephews of New Market, besides a host of friends. He was a friend to everybody and tried to treat everyone right. He suffered much but bore it with patience stating at the very last his readiness to depart.

Funeral services were at the home 2 miles north and one mile west of Guss, Sunday afternoon, at one o'clock conducted by Rev James Wilkins, pastor of New Market Methodist Church, after which interment was made in Old Memory cemetery. CLARINDA HERALD, Clarinda, Iowa, May 17, 1926

Weller, Dean - Funeral Services for Dean Weller, 99, who passed away October 30, 2020 will be held Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 11 AM at Cummings Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Friday, November 6, 2020 from 3-7 PM at the funeral home with family greeting friends from 5-7 PM. Interment will be held at Washington Cemetery in Gravity, Iowa. Memorials may be directed towards the family to be established.

William Dean Weller was born on the family farm near Conway, Iowa on February 24, 1921. He was the oldest child of William Wallace Weller and Maude Ellen (Knott) Weller. Dean attended country school at Marshall Number 4, located on the corner of the family farm, through the 8th grade. He graduated from Sharpsburg High School with the class of 1939. Dean lost his father at age 16, at which time he took over the duties of the farm and assisted with raising his two younger siblings, Howard and Mary Ellen. Dean loved the farm and thrived on the hard work required to run a farm.

Dean was united in marriage to Betty Joan Black, April 18, 1943. When they met, Betty was a senior at Lenox High School and working as a waitress at the Main Street Cafe in Lenox. Dean was smitten with her at first sight and thus history began. Their courtship continued while she attended AIB in Des Moines and worked at a munitions factory in Ankeny. They were the first couple to be married in the present Lenox Methodist Church. After they were married the newlywed couple moved in with Dean's family and later purchased the farm which is now a century farm and has been home to 5 generations of Weller's. Dean was a loving devoted husband, taking care of Betty in her later years and visiting her everyday during the last few months of her life, which she spent in the Clearfield Nursing Home. Dean lost the love of his life February 1, 2016. They enjoyed 73 years together. To this union, two children were born, Ronald Dean Weller and Karen Beth (Weller) Price.

Farming was Dean's passion and life. He saw many changes throughout his life. When Betty and Dean started farming, 77 years ago, they farmed with horses and picked corn by hand (side by side.) One of Dean's favorite memories was picking corn by hand the first year of their marriage. They not only picked about 30 acres of their own corn by hand, but also picked about 30 acres for a neighbor, Clyde Stephens, for hire. Which gave them some much needed income to survive during their first year of marriage. Dean continued to be fully engaged in farming into his 90's. Dean enjoyed telling of memories of past farming experiences, but also embraced the new and kept up on modern farming and conservation practices and technology. He enjoyed seeing and talking to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren on Facetime and would light up when they would call from far away to talk with grandpa.

Dean enjoyed people! As long as he was able to go, he loved the small town celebrations and getting out to visit with friends. Up until the last few months, he was always ready to go to a parade, a celebration, an implement dealer, the fair or even shopping. The grandkids said, "grandpa didn't shop for things, he shopped for people." Thank you to all the friends who took the time to visit when he was out and about and especially to those who took the time out of their busy schedule to stop by and visit.

Being 99 years old Dean is preceded in death by many relatives and friends, which was very difficult for him. Preceding him in death were his wife, of 73 years, Betty Joan (Black) Weller; his son, Ronald Dean Weller; his parents, William Wallace Weller and Maude Ellen (Knott) Weller; his parents-in-law, Edgar Ross Black and Etta Lillian (Recknor) Black; siblings and spouses, Howard and Lavone Weller and Bill and Mary Ellen Lewellen; brother-in-laws, Kenneth, Donald and Raymond Black and sister-in-law Norma Black

He is survived by his daughter, Karen Price and husband Stanley of rural Bedford; his daughter-in-law Lori Weller of rural Bedford; seven grandchildren Scott Price, Tracy Price, Tabitha Wilson and husband Brooks of Bedford, Chase Weller and wife Jessica and Derek Weller of Sharpsburg, Crystal Leininger and husband Daniel and Dustin Price and wife Kiana of Lehi, Utah; nine great-grandchildren, Callen, Jordan and Brynlee Leininger, Daxton, Treyson, Emerson and Davis Price, Realee, Jemma and Bo Weller, Gracie and Ronnie Wilson; sister-in-laws, Clytha Black and Jennie Black along with many nieces, nephews, family and a host of friends and neighbors

Young, William "Roy" - William Roy Young, age 65, passed from this life Tuesday, July 28 as the result of Covid 19 complications. There will be a private family viewing August 1 at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care. A graveside service will follow at 11:00 at Ames Municipal Cemetery. Face masks and social distancing are required, feel free to bring a lawn chair.

Roy was born August 9, 1954, in Des Moines to Mary (Oleson) and James H. Young. The family moved from Bedford to Ames when he was in grade school. He graduated from Ames High School in 1972.

Roy served four years in the Marine Corps attaining the rank of Sergeant E-5. His primary specialty was Artillery Scout Observer and he earned the Rifle Expert Badge and Pistol Expert Badge. He was honored to be on a Freedom Flight in 2015.

Roy and Deborah (Michaud) Canon were married September 17, 1982 in Ames where they raised their three children: Leah (Craig) of Pleasant Hill, Michael (Megan) of Grand Meadow, Minnesota, and Matthew (Erin) of Grimes.

Along with his dad, Roy owned and operated JARCO Stores at Lincoln Way and Duff until health issues forced his early retirement. Then he owned and managed commercial and residential properties.

Roy served on the Zoning Board of Adjustment and Planning & Zoning Board with the City of Ames. He was an avid NASCAR fan, competitive bowler, built and raced go-karts with his sons, and loved riding his Harley. He was a member of the American Legion Riders.

In addition to his wife Deborah and children, Roy is also survived by five grandchildren: Camille and Elise Skinner, Coraline and Charles Young, and Lillian Young. Also surviving is his father, James of Ames and three siblings: James E. "Gene" (Marjorie) of Cedar Rapids, Karen Schultz of Des Moines, and Peggy (Brad) Mabuce of West Des Moines as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Karen Irene Bush was born Feb. 22, 1946 in Maryville, Mo., to Dorothy and Walter Bush of rural Taylor County, Iowa, and passed away on May 9, 2020 at age 74. She had been a resident of Sealy, Texas, for 18 years.

Karen was the first of her family to be born in a hospital instead of at Grandma’s house. Karen was raised on their family farm in Gravity, Iowa, with her two sisters, Nancy and Lizz, and their older brother John. They attended school in a one-room schoolhouse (Hickory Grove, Washington No. 8) for several years. When it closed, she attended grade school in Gravity. After four area towns consolidated into the Bedford Community School District, junior high was in Conway, then high school was in Bedford, where she graduated in 1964. She attended college at Northwest Missouri State University and was a member of the Phi Mu Fraternity. After graduating with a BS in accounting, she and her first husband Roger Nelson moved to Florida.

They had three sons, Bryan, Brent, and Brandon, and were divorced a few years later.

Karen married Gordon Youngson from Friockheim, Scotland, on Jan. 1, 1984. The family moved from the Orlando, Fla., area to Houston, Texas, in the early 1980s. The bulk of her career was working as an accountant for Florida Gas and Transmission and Enron. Karen was a wonderful, supportive mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and wife. She was a professional darts thrower and loved to travel by air and by sea with her husband and companion, Gordon. Karen loved her cats, taking care of her yard, and all of her family.

She was a strong, persistent woman and a matriarch who was revered and loved by all.

Karen is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Dorothy Bush; her sister Elizabeth Maurine Ferguson; and her brother-in-law Jack Osborn. She is survived by her husband Gordon Youngson; her sons Bryan (Andrea) Nelson, Brent Nelson and Brandon (Marla) Nelson; her

stepsons Mark (Christine) Youngson and Scott Youngson; her grandchildren Ryan (Jessica) Youngson, Tyson Nelson, Olympia Nelson, Devon Nelson, Apollonia Nelson, Nolan Youngson and Jolene Youngson; her great-granddaughter Faith Youngson; her sister Nancy (Gary) Piper; her brother John (Debra) Bush; her sisters-in-law Lorna Osborn and Dorothy Lawson; and her brothers-in-law Brian Youngson and Noel Ferguson
