Breach, Dean Willis - Dean Willis Breach was born April 29, 1927, the eldest son of Ray and Anna (Alff) Breach on a farm near Walnut, IA. Their family of seven lived in the new chicken house while a new house was built on the farm they rented. Like many young boys, he liked fishing and went as often as possible with his friend Marion Edy.

Elementary schooling for Dean started in Henderson, IA, but then moved to Emerson, IA, for his 9th and 10th and a half grades when the family moved to a farm two miles south of Sharpsburg in 1942. He would continue high school at Conway, IA, where he enjoyed playing basketball, graduating in 1944.

Being no different than any other teenager growing up on a farm, he had responsibilities and work to be done to help his parents on the farm while also wanting to earn money and mobility of his own. So he fixed up a 1929 four door Chevy car that had wooden doors for his transportation. He even hand painted the body green and the tires red using only a paint brush. He picked up odd jobs where he could, one of which was working construction to earn money. In 1944-45 he worked road construction creating Highway 148.

Uncle Sam came calling and on June 16, 1945, Dean was inducted into Active Service in the Army of the United States at the Bedford, IA, Court House and sent to the Reception Center, Fort Leavenworth, KS, where he was assessed with his Military Occupation Skill (MOS) of Surgical Technician. From June 1945 – December 1946 he received the following training; Basic Training – Fort Lewis, Washington, MOS Specialty Training – Fitzsimons General Hospital, Denver, Colorado, Follow-on Internship – General Hospital, Clinton, Iowa. His last duty station was Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Dean attained the rank of Surgical Technician Fifth Grade during his time on Active Duty, receiving an Honorable Discharge from The Army of The United States. He earned the World War II Victory Medal.

After military service Dean returned to SW Iowa and began a family, marrying Phyllis Ann Hargin from Conway, IA, July 1947. They had four children, Linda, Carol, Roger and Susan. They lived west of Bedford, IA, west of Clearfield, IA, south of and in Sharpsburg, IA. They farmed, milked cows and gardened together and each child became involved in the farm/milking as they became old enough to do so safely. Dean and Phyllis milked cows by hand when they began but Dean dreamed of having an automated Grade A milking system. Due to their hard work and planning that dream came true in 1958 on the farm south of Sharpsburg, IA, when they built a modern milking barn with a top rate electric milking operation that could milk four cows at once.

Live old time country/bluegrass music was popular in Dean’s family. His brother Kenny along with several of their uncles played instruments at family gatherings, so it’s no surprise Dean would instantly get hooked on calling square dances, singing and dancing. Dean started square dancing in 1960 and in 1961 he started calling dances. He taught thousands of people how to square dance and has proudly said he didn’t have a student he couldn’t teach to dance.

Dean dealt with health challenges during his life. Farming was hard on his health and contributed to him making occupational and residential changes. During 1967/1968 he stopped large scale farming, gave up milking and began working full time as Postmaster at the Sharpsburg Post Office and moved his family into Sharpsburg, IA. Family history of heart problems would deal him not one but two blows of heart disease requiring him to undergo a multiple bypass surgery in 1981 and again in 2002.

Dean loved traveling so he purchased a pickup mounted camper and began taking the family on camping vacations to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Colorado, Iowa State Fair and Lake Of Three Fires. Later in Life he’d let someone else do the driving and take bus tours often to Branson, MO.

Dean and Phyllis divorced in 1986 after which Dean married Flossie Belle Strough of Gravity, IA, and began a new chapter in life together. Step children joining this union are James, Robert, David and Donald.

He retired from the Sharpsburg Post Office in 1988 which gave him more time for hobby farming, gardening, and restoring antique tractors. Dean would spend hours tinkering with the old tractors breathing life back into them, alongside his son teaching the grandchildren and some great grandchildren the right way to do it. He eventually acquired and restored nine antique tractors. He loved taking as many of his tractors as possible to parades and tractor rides with all of them driven by his children or grandchildren.

Music, dancing and traveling played a big role in Dean and Flossie’s life together. They met through square dancing and continued to enjoy it for years. Dean formed a singing/entertaining group named “Highway 49 plus 2”. They were a small volunteer group of family members who performed/entertained around the area care centers, hospitals, churches, etc.

In his golden years Dean took great pleasure in gardening and spending time with his young great grandchildren. Caring for the little ones and watching them grow so fast.
Left to cherish Dean’s memory are his wife, Flossie Breach, sister, Norma Culver, sister, Eleanor (William) Witt, sisters-in-law Ruthie Breach and Janice Nook, children, Linda (Harold) Spring, Carol (Dennis) Brown, Roger (Jill) Breach, Susan Breach (Curtis Bolinger), step-children, James (Judy) Strough, David (Susan) Strough, Donald (Christine) Strough, Cheryl Strough. Plus a blessed bounty of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and close friends.

Preceding Dean in death are his parents, Ray and Anna Breach, brothers Delmar Breach and Kenneth Breach, brother-in-law, William Culver, stepson, Robert Strough and infant nephew

Together they made a home south of Bedford on the family farm. They enjoyed the rural setting with their two children, Ella and Thomas. Anna loved to go check the cows and crops together with Scott and the kids. She even enjoyed spraying and cutting thistles in the pasture and CRP. It gave her an excuse to pick wildflowers.

Whenever there was field work, she would pack an all day lunch/snack bag for Scott and the kids when they were in the tractor. She loved shopping for clothes and dressing Ella and Thomas in the mornings; which sometimes made her and the kids late, because they had to look perfect! She was spontaneous and loved to be surprised by Scott taking her on vacations, which included trips on the AMTRAK, hockey games and Weston, Missouri.

Anna worked in Shenandoah as a CNA at Gardenview Care Center and Hansen Jewelry before being married. She had a kind and generous heart and always greeted you with a bright, genuine smile and hug. Jackson, Mary Lou Putnam -

Mary Lou (Putnam) Jackson, 88, peacefully departed this life on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at the Shady Lawn Living Center in Savannah, Missouri.

Mary Lou was born on a farm near Bedford, Iowa on December 18, 1930, to Virgil and Mary (Livingston) Putnam. She graduated from Bedford High School in 1949, and attended Northwest Missouri University in Maryville. Afterwards, Mary Lou worked in Shenandoah, Iowa where she met Duane Jackson in 1951, and they were married on September 20, 1953 in Bedford, Iowa, following his discharge from the Army.

Mary Lou and Duane enjoyed nearly 60 years together as husband and wife, starting in Iowa, then Kansas, and finally in St. Joseph, Mo for more than 50 years at their home on King Hill Avenue, where Duane preceded her in death in 2013. After moving to St. Joseph in 1961, Mary Lou worked at the Stockyards Bank followed by 21 years in the St. Joseph school district at Bode, Central and Benton, retiring in 1993.

While working full-time in the 60’s and 70’s, Mary Lou also gave piano lessons in her home to more than 30 students on weekends and evenings, including her own children, Mark and Janet. She was an accomplished musician, deeply loved the Lord and her church, and devoted much of her time and talents to playing the piano and organ at church services and special occasions.

Growing up on the farm in Iowa, Mary Lou, along with her older sister Margaret Mae and younger brother Howard, spent many an evening singing and playing instruments, while their parents, Virgil and Mary, encouraged and applauded their efforts. These sessions carried over to the trio’s later years, where they still enjoyed getting together to make music and sing hymns, led by Mary Lou on piano. One of her best memories was receiving a “1” at Iowa state music contest, where she performed Chopin’s “Polonaise”, and was surprised by her father, Virgil, who flew in on his plane from the farm to witness her performance.

Mary Lou never worried about herself and always put her family, friends and faith first. She always went the extra mile to work hard and serve others from her days on that Iowa farm until her later years, aiding her husband Duane in every way as his health declined. Helping and giving to someone else made her happy and more fulfilled than anything. Her only grandchild, Lance, was so special and meant the world to her. Mary Lou was a wonderful mother, sister, wife and daughter. She will be missed by everyone who knew her and had the good fortune to experience her generosity and kindness.

Knox, Edwin Lyle "Bud" -

Edwin Lyle “Bud” Knox “passed from a temporal to spiritual life” on March 29, 2019.

These same words were inscribed on the tombstone of James Knox, Lyle’s 5th great grandfather, who lived in County Tyrone, Ireland when James Knox, born 1723, passed away in 1790. We are using these words in Lyle’s obituary as an honor to both he and his 5th great grandfather.

Edwin Lyle Knox was born 93 years ago, on January 11, 1926, to John Cleveland Knox and Alberta Lavisa Norwista (Owens) in their home three miles west of Clearfield and ½ mile north. Lyle was baptized and affirmed his belief in God when he attained membership in the United Presbyterian Church in Clearfield where his parents and family attended church regularly.

Lyle attended Cornbread College, the country school ½ mile south of his home on the corner until he attended the Clearfield Community School, where he later graduated from high school. He grew up as a farm boy helping his father raise crops, cattle, and hogs.

In 1948, he and friend went skating at the Clarinda Skating Rink. There, he met the love of his life, Gladys Jackson, of rural Villisca. Marrying on February 26, 1949, in the Methodist Church at Villisca, they made their home in his grandfather, Ed Owens’ home, 4 miles west of Clearfield and 2 ½ miles south. Here he and Gladys raised their two children: Connie Kaye Knox (Beck), and Stanley John Knox. Lyle’s family attended the Clearfield United Presbyterian Church until it closed, and then they attended the United Methodist Church in Clearfield. The family farmed and Bud worked with his father on his farm, raising crops of hay, beans, corn and livestock. Lyle had a skill for fixing farm equipment, and he constructed his own round baler carrier when round balers were first invented. Lyle’s life centered around God, his wife and children, and farming. He loved his family dearly and they loved him back. He taught his family to live according to religious virtues. For entertainment, the family went fishing and took trips, often camping in a tent in national and state parks.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, John C. and Alberta Knox, and two sisters and brothers in law: Hazel Knox Lundberg and husband, Frank, and Maxine Stevenson and husband, Raymond. On his wife’s side, he was preceded in death by brother-in-law, Byron Jackson and Ralph Jackson, and wife, Marilyn and Gladys’ parents, John and Edith Jackson of rural Villisca.

Surviving him are his wife of 70 years, Gladys, his children, Connie Beck (Don) of Lenox and Stanley Knox (Dorothy) of Clearfield. Also surviving him are his grandchildren and their families: Natasha Lynne (Beck) Jodoin (husband Jason) of Altoona and their children Gage Alexander and McKenna Marie; Michael John Knox (Bethany) of Redding and their children Tucker John, Mackenzie Nadine, Emily Anne, and Callie Lynn; Travis James Knox (Allison) and their children Courtney Eva, Carson James, and Cora Rene of Winterset; Christopher Joel Knox (Carrie) and their son Kohen Christopher of Clearfield. Also surviving him are his nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends.

He had a special bond with his niece, Mary Collins of Kelso, Washington and Gladys’ cousin, Shirley Ainsworth of Tempe, Arizona and they kept in touch often.

In later years, Bud and Gladys welcomed hunters into their home. Alzheimer’s attacked Bud’s nervous system at age 85, and Gladys cared diligently for him in their home until his passing. “Lyle, we will always remember you with love in our hearts, remembering your love, kind words and deeds, role-modeling, work ethic, helpfulness, and teachings. You have lived a good life, and you will never be forgotten.”

McNees, Russell "Skip" Edward - Russell “Skip” McNees, 83, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Thursday, September 26, 2019, at Atlantic Specialty Care.

Russell Edward McNees was born on December 17, 1935, on the farm belonging to his grandparents, William and Cora Keim, near Dow City, Iowa. He was the third child born to George Eldon and Ethel Mae (Keim) McNees. His family moved to a farm east of Bedford in 1936, and later to the family farm near Gravity, in 1940. He grew up with two sisters and a brother, and didn’t have access to electricity at the home until he was a teenager. He was given the opportunity to learn to fly from the family’s farm hand and picked up on it quickly; not without a few close calls, though. Russ attended Washington Township Country School and graduated from Gravity High School in 1954. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Army in January of 1955. He served with the 16th Ordinance Company stationed in Taequ, Korea. After his honorable discharge, he moved to Colorado, joined the Colorado National Guard, and started working in the wheat business harvesting all over the United States. He later attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville and majored in accounting; numbers being something that always came easy to him. A job opening at the United States Postal Service Terminal in Council Bluffs, Iowa, led to the start of a 38 year career.

On July 4, 1960, he reunited with former classmate, Julia Brown, at the Bedford 4th of July celebration and the couple later married on June 25, 1961, in Gravity, Iowa. The couple lived and started their family in Council Bluffs and later made Atlantic home in January of 1966, after being transferred to the Atlantic Post Office. Russ’ duties at the post office ranged from sorting mail on trains, being a clerk and carrier, and he also was officer in charge at the Bridgewater Post Office for a short time. He retired in 1998, and continued working part-time for Roland Funeral Service, Brink Flower Shop, and his son’s roofing business.

Russ and Julia looked forward to taking trips to Colorado, attending the Iowa State Fair and nights out at the Redwood Restaurant. The couple was always up for taking a spin on the dance floor whether it be lessons or dances at the Elk’s. Trips to the casino with Julia were always memorable; most of the time he was limited to the buffet area only as it seemed when he stepped on the casino floor, he was a jinx. Gathering with friends and family for games and cards, especially Pinochle, was always something he enjoyed.

He was an avid coin collector and reader; reading anything he could get his hands on, and enjoyed a good crossword puzzle. Russ loved the change of seasons that Iowa offered and was outdoors any chance he could get feeding the birds and squirrels and keeping his lawn looking top notch. He was a lifelong fan of baseball and instilled this passion into his children and grandchildren. He would catch a St. Louis Cardinals game anyway he could, whether it be in person, listening to the radio, or on TV.

Russ was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge #445, the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, and a 61-year member and former treasurer of Pymosa Masonic Lodge #271. His service to his country was always something he took great pride in and was active with the Atlantic Color Guard, Gravity American Legion Post #578, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3415 in Atlantic.

Russ was one to be giving of himself always looking out for others and volunteering for various community events, delivering Meals on Wheels, or donating 28 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. He became a friend to all he met, and you maybe even got to hear one of his jokes; referred to by his children as “corny dad jokes.” His smile, only outdone by his hair, was radiant and something most remember. His smile was even bigger when his children and grandchildren were around. The love and pride he had for his family poured out in his actions of always being a part of family get-together’s or grandchildren’s various activities. Russ was a family man and exceptional Grandpa.

He loved his God, his family and his country!

Russ is survived by his wife of 54 years, Julia of Atlantic; sons, Mark (Bobbi) McNees of Atlantic and Dale (Rachel) McNees of Land O' Lakes, Florida; daughter, Lisa (Matthew) Richards of Berkeley, California; grandchildren, Ian McNees, Maren (Travis) Kinney, Lauren McNees, Colin McNees, twins Olivia & Jacob McNees; sisters, Sandra Ujlaky, Barb (Bob) Chepak; sister-in-law, Martha McNees; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Ethel McNees; sister in infancy, Lois Marie McNees; brother, George McNees; and parents-in-law, Glenn and Hazel Brown.

Open visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., Sunday at Roland Funeral Home. A Masonic service will be held at 4:30 p.m., Sunday, September 29, 2019, at Roland Funeral Home followed by visitation with the family present from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 30, 2019, at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic. Burial, with military honors by the Atlantic Color Guard, will be held in the Atlantic Cemetery.

Perdew, Robert Eugene - 06 Aug 1935 - 09 Mar 2019 -

On August 6, 1935, in a farmhouse half mile north of Gravity, Iowa, Charles Edgar and Nettie Zoe (Brown) Perdew welcomed their 4th son, Robert Eugene, completing their family.

As a young man he worked many jobs, such as farming, driving a dump truck and road oiling. He was a lead man at Mt Arbor nursery, Swift packing house then Union Carbide. The job he valued the most of was riding his Harley up and down the high boot legging liquor.

He met Dorothy Joanne French in 1954, although her father was not too fond of the way Bob looked, he told him, "If you want to date my daughter you have to shave, get a haircut, get a car and take that earring out of your ear!" So, he got a haircut, took the earring out and bought his first car, a 1935 Chevrolet. After a short year of dating they were married November 5th, 1944 in Bedford, Iowa. They made their home in Essex, Iowa and raised their children, Charles Dean, Michael Robert, Randy Allen and Teresa Louise, there until 1972 when they moved the family to Boulder, Colorado.

He worked for Coors Brewery, Aspen Travel Trailers, and did construction/maintenance for Magic Maids, Joanne's cleaning company. His weekends were spent in the Rock Mountinas mining for gold and dreaming of htting the mother lode.

In 1993 Bob and Joanne returned to Gravity, Iowa to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and to open Spinning Wheel Treasures Antique Mall in Bedford, where they reconnected with family and friends over a cup of coffee or two. After retiring he enjoyed sitting in his recliner, eating jellybeans, petting his beloved car, Sugar, while watching Judge Judy and The Price is Right!

Bob was known for "not holding back his opinion and telling you like it is." Even if it wasn't what you wanted to hear. He had a colorful vocabulary and was highly proficient in knowing more cuss words (and using them) than most people learn in a lifetime!

On March 9th, 2019, Bob drifted away at home, in his sleep to paradise. Not being a religious man, his heaven is paradise, "where there is always room for everyone to fish and you always hook the big one." He was 83 years old.

He leaves behind his children, Charles, Randy and Teresa; grandchildren, Daven, Angela, Michael, Mary Paige, Bailey and Emery; great grandchildren, Autumn, Emril, Paris, Mahren and Cree.

He will be laid to rest on the same land that he was born on, in the Washington Township Cemetery, a half mile north of Gravity, completing his circle of life.

There will be no services per his request, saying "All that shit is just a waste of money." Wishing you a Happy Birthday in Paradise Dad.
