Barker, Michael David - Michael David Barker, 68, of Iowa City passed away peacefully Saturday, March 3, 2018 at his home surrounded by family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice or to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Michael was born on November 28, 1949 in Maryville, Missouri to Alvin and Mary Lou (Norton) Barker. They told him he made them miss the end of the movie, Wake of the Red Witch. Years later, he bought them the DVD.
Mike had many jobs and hobbies. He loved baseball and softball. He started refereeing those games in 1969 and eventually added basketball and football games before retiring in 1999. He worked hard to get his EMT License and was employed by Capital City Ambulance in Des Moines and then Old Capital Ambulance in Iowa City.
Mike married Pam Frame in 1969 and they had two children, David and Andy. They divorced later in 1980.
Mike was tough. He was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on July 8, 1988 and went through 9 months of chemotherapy. He was in remission just long enough to marry Joyce Zdulski on August 26, 1989. By September 11, 1989, he had relapsed and was at the UIHC for a bone marrow transplant. He did the unthinkable and went back to the work in the field he loved at the UIHC.
Mike’s challenging diagnosis and treatment brought many more medical events: kidney transplants, diabetes, heart attacks, colon cancer, congestive heart failure and a stroke here and there. He continued to fight back and return to work until retiring in 2007, after 22 years of service as a Nursing Assistant and later as an EKG Technician.
The last straw for his tired body after winning the battle with Influenza A, RSV and Pneumonia was only to have the cancer return and his kidney to fail.
Survivors include his wife Joyce; his parents Alvin and Mary Lou; children: David Barker, Andy (Christina Moore) Barker, his 4 grandchildren he was so proud of: Kelsey (Jeremy) Frazier, Trent Barker, Sydney Moore and Levi Barker; a brother Randy (Bobbi) Barker, and sister Cindy (Doug) Borwig.

Houk, Eugene E. - Memorial services for Dr. Eugene E. Houk, 84, of Jefferson, will be held at 11:00am Monday, May 21, 2018 at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson. Interment will be in the Jefferson Cemetery.
The family will visit with friends prior to the memorial service, beginning at 9:30am Monday, May 21st at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson.
Dr. Eugene E. Houk passed away May 16, 2018 in Jefferson, Iowa. Gene, as he was fondly known, was born April 23, 1934 to L. Rex Houk and Vera Rowe Houk in a small wooden frame farm house on the south side of a dirt road that marked the boundary between Iowa and Missouri. In due time, he was joined by seven sisters and two brothers. As the family grew, they relocated to Taylor County, Iowa where Gene attended grade school and graduated from Bedford High School in 1952.
In the fall of 1952 Gene started college at the University of Iowa. He enrolled in the Naval ROTC program and by the third year of college he had developed a career path but had an important decision to make. In one hand he had his acceptance in the US Navy for pilot training in Florida and in the other was acceptance into dental school. Because he preferred an independent life style he chose dentistry. Gene worked his way through college by working various campus jobs as well as farm work during the summer. It was while he was working at the University of Iowa Hospital that he met a young nurse, Carolyn Rigler. They married in 1958. After graduation from dental school in 1959 the couple moved to the Great Lakes Naval Station where Gene served as a second Lieutenant in the dental corp. After his honorable discharge in 1961 they moved to Jefferson where he opened an office and practiced dentistry for 33 years.
Gene volunteered countless hours over the years to many groups in the community and to his profession. He was proud to serve as president of the Jefferson Lions Club, Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, Greene County Historical Society, Greenewood Homes, Inc. (provided low cost housing for the elderly) and Greenewood Homes (built the community center). He served on the board of trustees of Brenton Bank, Greene County Medical Center, and Greene County Medical Center Foundation. Because of his interest in flying, he served on the Jefferson Airport Commission.
A short list of his service to his professional organizations are as follows: Board member of Delta Dental Plans of Iowa (chairman of board for eight years), and State Board of Dental Examiners (chairman for eight years). During that time he was responsible for giving examinations for licensure for graduating dental students in various schools in the Midwest.
Because of his untiring efforts and leadership skills, he was recognized and awarded not only by his peers but also in his community. In 1966 he was given the Iowa Jaycees State distinguished service award. He received the ABC award for his volunteer efforts locally. Professionally he was honored to have received the Citizen of the Year award from the American Association of Dental Examiners as well as the President’s award of the American Dental Association.
Gene had interests that were wide and varied. His favorite was in the field of aviation. He was an instrument rated pilot and flew his Bonanza for over 40 years.
In 1961, shortly after their move to Jefferson, Gene and Carolyn joined the First United Methodist Church where they were faithful members. Gene was a Mason and a Shriner.
Gene was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease that ultimately took his life. Even though his physical activities were limited, he retained his kind, loving, witty demeanor. He was known for his level-headed intelligence, honesty and being a tireless worker.
Preceding him in death are his parents. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Carolyn; his siblings: Nadine (Ray) Stanley, Sarah Hamilton, Helen (Norman) Gilleland, Joan Butler, Betty (Charles) Bailey, Rex (JoAnna) Houk, Mary (Lance) Steinbock, Patricia (Stuart) White, and Ellis (Gayle) Houk; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many loyal friends.
Gene would be honored to be remembered with memorials designated to the building project for the future Greene County Animal Facility.

Karg, Henry Sawnville - Henry Karg, age 104, of New Market, Iowa, entered into peace Friday, March 23, 2018 at Clarinda Regional Health Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at Ritchie Funeral Home in Clarinda with Pastor Dan Wiebesiek officiating. Interment will be in the Memory Cemetery in New Market, Iowa.
Henry Sawnville Karg was born October 29, 1913, in Pleasant Hill, Cass County, Missouri. He was the fourth of ten children belonging to Robert J. Karg and Blanche Belle (Chappell) Karg. Henry grew up attending country school, and when he was only 13, his father passed away from cancer. In 1931, Henry moved to Fedora, South Dakota when his mother was united in marriage to Clyde Watson. All of the children, except Thelma, moved with them. Clyde lost his farm in the Great Depression. Growing up during the Great Depression caused his family and himself to move around the country where work was available. In the fall of 1933, the family moved to the New Market, Iowa area near the Pratt family home. Henry helped the Pratt family shuck corn, and during the fall harvest of 1933, he met their daughter, Bonnie Pratt. In 1934, he returned to the Pleasant Hill, Missouri area working for a farmer pulling hedge row stumps. In 1935, he returned to the New Market area helping area farmers. He was reunited with Bonnie Pratt and the couple started dating. Henry, his brother Alvin and Bonnie’s cousin Keith Pratt all worked doing various farming in Colorado, Idaho and Washington. They returned to the New Market area and Henry took his mother back to Missouri and while there he went to work in a rock quarry. Visitation will be held Thursday at the Ritchie Funeral Home from 3 to 7 with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7 PM. Memorials be given in Estella's name.
Estella Elizabeth (Cooper) Swartz was born October 23, 1921 in Adams County Iowa. She was the daughter of Elmer E. Cooper and Florence (Wilmarth) Cooper. Estella had 1 older sister, Wanda and two older brothers, Wayne and Willis who are all deceased. Estella grew up north of Corning on the family farm. She attended school at Dog Hollow where she later became the teacher. Estella graduated from Corning High School in 1939 and completed the required Normal Training classwork so that she could become a teacher by the age of 17. She began her career in 1939 at a monthly of $40 and continued to teach in the rural schools of Adams County until 1944.
Estella was married on October 19, 1943, to Eugene T. Swartz from Lenox. They were wed at the Corning United Methodist Parsonage. For the remainder of the school year she continued teaching although married teachers were not allowed to teach by law. The community made her to promise she would finish the year. Estella continued to live with her parents while Eugene served in World War II. The couple’s son, Edward was born in 1945 while his dad was in Japan. Their daughter Florence was born in 1948.
The couple made their home in a small house built for them on the Swartz land north of Lenox. That home is now a one-car garage on the farm! Estella took on farm responsibilities while raising the two children. She felt the urge to return to teaching when Florence was five. From 1953 through 1959 Estella taught in the rural schools near the farm. By 1960 most of the rural schools were closed and Estella found herself teaching in elementary schools in the Creston School District. She was so proud of her many students and their accomplishments. They were doctors, farmers, teachers, nurses only to name a few and many of them kept in contact with her all the way through their own retirements. She believed that a good education was important and lived by her words. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Northwest Missouri University in 1979 – the same year her daughter Florence graduated from college.
When Estella and Eugene retired they traveled the U.S. They hiked the Appalachian Trail and the Grand Canyon several times as well as many other less known trails. For nearly 15 years their Fifth-Wheel camper was their home and the U.S. was their campsite. They enjoyed their years of volunteer work at National Parks, BLM and other parks as camp hosts. Estella enjoyed the outdoors as you would notice if you visited the Swartz farm and saw her beautiful gardens. She was a 4-H leader, active member of the United Methodist church and together the couple enjoyed driving their two Edsel’s in parades and across Iowa with the International Edsel Club.
When Eugene passed away in 2006, Stella continued to live in the couple’s A-frame house and saw the land become a Century Farm in 2017. She managed the farm with the help of a really wonderful renter, Arnold Maynes. She continued to drive and enjoyed a full and active life to the very end. Her many flowerbeds and plants will continue to bloom with memories of those who took the “Flower Walk” with her. She also really loved all of the trips she took with friends who shared a variety of entertainment events with her over the years.
