Allen, Phyllis Louise Terry - Funeral Celebration of Life Services for Phyllis Allen, age 91, of Hopkins, Missouri, who passed away Sunday, July 23, 2017 at the Red Oak Health Care Center will be held Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Interment will be held at the Bedford City Cemetery.
Phyllis Louise (Terry) Allen was born April 12, 1926, in Bedford, Iowa the daughter of Phillip Terry and Edyth Mae (Reeves) Terry. She grew up attending school, graduating from Bedford High School with the Class of 1944. After graduation, Phyllis worked as a telephone operator for the local telephone company. This was back in the day when we still had operators to connect all of the calls. They worked upstairs in the Bedford telephone office. In 1951, she was united in marriage to Edward Allen.
While Phyllis was still living at home, her mother was diagnosed with cancer and was in and out of the hospital. Phyllis cared for her family upon her mother's death, taking charge of her youngest brother Ronnie who was only 5 years old at the time. She loved him as any big sister would, attending all of his school activities, boy scout meetings along with being a married housewife and working at the telephone office. "Phyllis had a heart of gold," her sister Donna said, "she was the most caring person."
In 1957, Eddy and Phyllis purchased the State Line Cafe in Hopkins, Missouri where they worked and lived until 1972, when Eddy passed away. Phyllis continued running the business until 2009. In 2010, because of health reasons, she had an opportunity to sell the business and she moved to Red Oak, Iowa to be near her sister Donna. Donna recalls, "if she hadn't lost her eyesight . . . . she would still be running the store!"
Over the years, Phyllis was known as a saver . . . . she saved everything from a shoe string to a plastic bag. Most often she did large projects herself, like painting the ceiling of the cafe, or hanging Christmas lights on the satellite dish . . . which, of course, required her to climb up on the ladder by herself. But, every once in a while, she would ask for help, like the time she was mowing the yard . . . and she got too close to the pond . . . and soon enough the mower was in the pond! However, the spot she put the mower in the pond was behind the firework shed, and they couldn't see her and didn't know where she was, they only heard her yelling!
Left to cherish her memory is her sister Donna Jenkins of Red Oak, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Helen Terry, also of Bellevue, Nebraska; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Preceding Phyllis in death were her parents, Phillip and Edyth Terry; her husband Eddy Allen; two brothers, Doyle Terry and Ronnie Terry; two sisters, Barbara and Annette at infancy; two brothers-in-law, Jack McCarl and Ralph Jenkins; and her special friend, Carole Oberhouser.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford where we 'Celebrate Life'.
Kannon Chael Hughes was born February 20, 2015, in Branson, Missouri the beautiful son of Kyle Douglas Hughes and Dana Lynn (Walston) Hughes. Kannon was a 'lake-boy' through and through. He loved boating, water sports or any other related lake activity. He even wake-boarded with his babysitter, Dally! In his short life, Kannon had the ability to glean every second out of every day. He loved going to work at Hughes Marine . . . working side-by-side with his dad and the Hughes Marine Crew, Rick, Arthur, Hayden, Bradley and Wade. Whatever they were doing, he wanted to be right there doing it with them! Kannon and his mother held a special bond, whether they were shopping, lining up his play animals or making pizzas together, they seemed to always share a laugh. Somehow, even though he was only two, Kannon had already learned how to 'woo' the ladies into doing whatever he wanted. He would grin that special grin and the next thing you knew, they were out horseback riding, wake-boarding, riding four-wheelers, or anything else HE decided they should do!
Left to cherish Kannon’s memory are his loving parents, Kyle and Dana Hughes of Reeds Spring, Missouri; maternal grandparents, Missy Davison and husband Don of New Market, Iowa; Danny Walston and Alice Johnson of Bedford, Iowa; paternal grandparents, Tony and Lori Hughes of Bedford, Iowa; eight aunts and uncles, Kenton Walston and Michaela Christensen; Jordan Walston, Jenna Walston; Ryan and Lacee Hughes; and Julie and Branislav Vukojevic; three cousins, Arabella, Eliot and Hawkins; maternal great-grandparents, Floyd and Linda Beason; and Bob and Donna Walston; a paternal great-grandmother, Wilma Hughes; his beloved babysitter, Dallas Spragg, and her family; the Hughes Marine Crew, Rick Daniels, Arthur Richtmyre, Hayden Dlouhy, Bradley Williams and Wade Fritts; along with many other family members and friends.

Kirby, Virgil Edwin - Celebration of Life Services for Virgil Kirby, age 96, of Bedford, who passed away Monday, June 5, 2017 at Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center will be held Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford, Iowa. Visitation will be held Thursday morning one hour prior to services with the family greeting friends. Interment will be held at Conway Cemetery in Conway. Memorials may be directed to the Bedford United Methodist Church or the John F. Hardin American Legion.
Virgil Edwin Kirby was born in Sharpsburg, Iowa on March 2, 1921, the son of Lawrence Clyde Kirby and Oma Winifred (Brown) Kirby. He was the second of three children born to the family. Virgil started school in Sharpsburg, and after many moves he went to high school in Bedford, Iowa, riding his pony to school. Later he moved back close to Sharpsburg and graduated from there. Many times as a child, he and his family spent Sunday's (after church) at his Grandparent Brown's home. In later years, his Grandma Kirby would spend weeks in their home and he would help care for her. When he was in 4-H, he earned money to buy a calf, and one year, he won over-all at the County Fair! He kept this one, which started his herd of cattle. Virgil worked for his father so he could have it in the pasture until he was married.
During the time his younger sister Venita was in school, he met her teacher, Dorothy C. Hughes, and they began dating. They were united in marriage on June 3, 1944, in the United Presbyterian Church in Creston, Iowa. To this loving union, four children were born, Cleota, twins Jolene and Joseph, and Frances (Fran).
Virgil was called to service in 1945. He went to three camps before getting Basic Training at Camp Crouder, Missouri. He was then sent to Fort Snelling, Minnesota; Fort Jackson, South Carolina as a Filing Clerk; Marnmoth, New Jersey as a Personnel Clerk and Fort Riley, Kansas as a Quarter Master. He was not sent overseas because of his hearing (ear damage).
Virgil loved farming, but with his back pain from having polio, he had to try other occupations. Over the years, he held many jobs, including being a welder in Perry, Iowa; driving the tank wagon for Taygold Farm Service in Clearfield, Iowa; Country Boys Lumber Yard in Bedford, Iowa; Great Lakes Systems in Clarinda, Iowa; and J. L. Houston Company in Hopkins, Missouri. Then he would have his chores to do at night. He also enjoyed making various things from wood including benches, book cases, hall trees and quilt racks. With three daughters, he would usually make three of each! He loved all kinds of tools, and was very proud of the special garage and shop that he helped build.
Virgil was considered a quiet man. He would do most of his visiting at breakfast, telling stories of his life. He never wanted to move after marriage since he had moved so many times as a child, so after four short moves within a couple of years, the couple settled on the Conway farm in 1949, (where his wife Dorothy was born). They purchased this farm in 1976. Virgil had so many memories of the moves of his family. He enjoyed the neighbors and checking out each farm and telling how the moving went. He enjoyed the two Taylor County History Books, bringing back a great memory of someone.
When his two older daughters were young, Virgil enjoyed taking them skating on the pond or roller skating, and he made sure they got to Sunday school each Sunday! He was raised in the Presbyterian Church, then joined the Methodist Church when they moved to Taylor County. In his early married years, he enjoyed going bowling with the Conway Methodist Men.
Virgil was a Farm Bureau member since 1942, starting in Ringgold County. He has helped with several membership drives. He was a member of the John F. Hardin American Legion in Bedford. He also liked to fish when time allowed. When he was unable to go because of his health, many said they missed seeing him on the bridge east of Bedford. He always had a joke, song or some memory to repeat. The Taylor County Fair was always something he enjoyed. He started attending when he was about three years old and continued (except for his years in the service) until he was no longer able to attend in 2011.
Left to cherish the memories of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend is his loving wife of 73 years, Dorothy Kirby of Bedford, Iowa; three daughters, Cleota Tapken and husband Art of Orient, Iowa; Jolene Fox and husband John of Chillicothe, Missouri; and Fran Dougherty and husband Bill of Bedford, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Renee Neppl and husband Chris of Adel, Iowa; Dave Kendrick and wife Patty of Olathe, Kansas; Andrea Hirsch of Lubbock, Texas; Neal Tapken and wife Meredith of Adel, Iowa; Tara Weed and husband Josh of Bedford; Tiffany Bennett and husband Rusty of Lee's Summit, Missouri; and Travis Dougherty of Bedford, Iowa; thirteen great-grandchildren; and a sister, Venita Schmidt; along with many other family members and friends.
Preceding Virgil in death are his parents, Lawrence and Oma Kirby; an infant son, Joseph Kirby; and a sister, LaVon Wehde.
