Akers, Vera Belle Lacox - Celebration of Life Funeral Services for Vera Belle, age 102, formerly of Bedford, who passed away Sunday, May 8, 2016 in Mount Pleasant, Iowa will be held Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 1:00 PM at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services with the family greeting friends. Interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.
Vera Belle Lacox was born Feb. 16, 1914, in Taylor County, Iowa. She was the second daughter of Thomas Lacox and Martha (Moore) Lacox. When she was a little girl attending McMillin Country School, a bird flew in the window one day. It was considered bad luck for a bird to fly out the same window, and unfortunately that bird did. Later that day her Aunt Ferris arrived at school to tell 9 year old Vera, and her 12 year old sister Eva that their Mother had passed away. Their Father had poor health and she remembers pulling him around the farm in their little red wagon to do chores. He also passed away a year later. Because of the early deaths of their parents, Vera and her sister Eva were raised by their paternal grandmother Amanda Lacox. Vera had many fond memories of time spent with her extended family of beloved cousins.
Vera graduated from Nodaway High School with the Class of 1931, and attended every alumni banquet, including her 79th, at which she was the last living member of her class. She earned a teaching certificate when she graduated from Creston Community College, and while a student there, she lived with a family and helped care for their baby and did housework to cover her room and board. In 1934, Vera and a friend took the train to the World's Fair in Chicago, this was during the Great Depression, and she remembers buying an 11 cent hat for the trip!
She rode her horse to Willow Street and Spread Eagle Country Schools where she taught four years. It was the teacher's job to carry in water and light the coal stove each morning to heat the school house. On May 28, 1939, she was united in marriage to Doyle Akers. Her sister Eva was married to Doyle's brother Iven. She and Doyle farmed southeast of Bedford until his death in 1970. They were blessed with three children, David Paul, Dale Lynn and Linda Gale.
Vera loved reading, growing flowers, watching birds, and drew great comfort from nature. She made beautiful quilts for each child and grandchild. She adored her grandchildren and often traveled to California, the east coast and Mount Pleasant, Iowa to spend time with them.
Vera worked at The Frosty Trete, Pearl Terrace Nursing Home and Places Dime Store for eleven years. She and Doyle were Farm Bureau members, and members of the First Baptist Church. Vera was active in Republican Women, and worked as a precinct chairperson on Election Day. She belonged to Rebekah's Lodge and enjoyed church circle, playing cards with friends and the Now or Never and other neighborhood clubs.
In 2002, she moved to The Folks Apartments in Mount Pleasant, Iowa where she lived until 2011, and most recently resided at Park Place Elder Living in Mount Pleasant.
Left to cherish Vera’s memory are two children, her son, Dale Akers of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; and her daughter, Linda Keith and husband Randy of Mediapolis, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Ann (Tony) Vodacek, Chris (Jennifer) Campbell, Jonathan (Rebecca) Akers, Jessica Akers, Joshua (Julie) Akers, Erin (Keith) Musser and Alexandra (Courtney) Achen; thirteen great-grandchildren, Kayla, Mason and Gemma Vodacek; Kali Knoth, Jasmin Akers, Alexander Akers, Tyler, Haley, Riley and Roya Akers; Scarlett and Ezra Musser; and Norah Achen; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Barker, Billie Jean Brannon - Funeral Celebration of Life Services for Billie Jean Barker, age 76, who passed away at her home on Sunday, July 10, 2016, will be held Thursday, July 14, 2016, at 10:00 AM at the Lenox United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held at the Lenox Community Center on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, from 2 to 7 PM with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7 PM. Interment will be held at the North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.
Billie Jean was the youngest of Wilma (Woods) and Evan Brannon’s three children. She was born on August 24, 1939, on a farm north of Lenox. She passed away unexpectedly at her home in Lenox on July 10, 2016 at the age of 76.
Billie Jean began elementary school in Rich Hill, Mo. Her family moved to Diagonal, IA, in 1950, where she continued her schooling through her sophomore year of high school. The Brannon family eventually settled in Lenox, and Billie Jean finished her final two years of school at Lenox High School, graduating with the class of 1957. She then headed to Des Moines for her first job opportunity.
Billie Jean first caught Lonnie’s eye at a Lenox High School basketball game in the old gymnasium when he was home from college for the weekend. She was looking mighty fine in a snazzy red sweater, and he knew right then and there, he would have to get in contact with that gal in the red sweater! After an initial stumble, the romance grew, and on Flag Day, June 14th of 1958, Lonnie proposed. To his surprise, Billie accepted the proposal by saying, “Yes - and I don’t believe in long engagements…. Do you?” The couple married on October 4th - less than 4 months after Lonnie’s proposal!
The happy couple welcomed their first child, Lahni Jean (1960), followed by Todd Brannon (1962), and Lisa Ann (1966). Billie Jean was a stay-at-home mom while her children were young, and eventually began helping Lonnie by keeping the books for the family business, Barker Implement. She continued to work alongside her husband until they both retired in 2015.
Billie Jean was an incredible cook, and was famous for her ability to put together “awesome” meals at the spur of the moment for friends and sometimes “extra guests” brought to the house by Lonnie, her kids, and even her grandkids. One of the favorite traditions she shared with her grandkids and their friends when they reached high school age was the “Friday Morning Breakfast Club”. BJ and Lonnie were like a second set of grandparents to their grandkids’ friends, always making them feel right at home. They would all meet at Grandma’s house at 7:30 a.m. and be treated to a special breakfast before heading off to school. Holiday gatherings were always looked forward to as she always prepared the traditional meal with turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and scalloped corn.
Grandma BJ’s homemade pizza became everyone’s family favorite, especially the Saturday night before Easter. Everyone will tell you that she made the best homemade pizza crust in the world –which she learned from her brother, Donn. She never told us exactly how she made it or let any of us to help her prepare it! We suspect that she didn’t use a set recipe, but somehow her crust turned out perfect every single time. And we can’t forget Grandma’s best ever Chili!

Book, Duane Leroy - Duane Leroy Book passed away on May 29, 2016 in Savannah, MO. He was born September 26, 1934 in Athelstan, Iowa the son of Carl Leroy Book and Margaret (Cavner) Book. He grew up in the Bedford and Conway area graduating from Bedford High School in 1953. He served in the Army from 1953 to 1955, returning home to farm.
On June 23, 1956 he was united in marriage to Janet Marley at the Berea Church of Christ south of Bedford. Duane and Janet lived east of Bedford where they raised their family, JoEllen and Doyle.
In addition to farming, Duane owned and operated a blacksmith and welding repair shop, D&D Repair for several years. This welding shop often became a place where the neighbors would catch up on the news while repairs were in process.
In 1992 Duane moved to Savannah, Missouri and lived on the David Swartz farm. Years before, Duane’s parents had been friends and next door neighbors to David’s grandparents, so it was a multigenerational friendship. Janet and Duane truly enjoyed their time there. Not only were they now closer to their grandchildren, Lindsay and Jared, but they also regarded David, LeeAnn, and Tristan as part of their family.
He spent the next several years doing custom leather work, building and repairing saddles and tack. He also enjoyed trips to Arkansas with Janet to visit Doyle and Micki and especially enjoyed watching the grandchildren grow up. He always liked to visit with his friends over a cup of coffee.
He had a lifetime love of horses and western culture. Even as a small boy on the farm he enjoyed his ponies and later horses that he rode to country school. He admitted that he was always happiest when he owned a horse and until the last few years he had always owned at least one. He passed this knowledge and love for horses on to both his children and grandchildren. Almost every weekend of JoEllen and Doyle’s childhood involved some kind of horse related event, often under the lights of his own home arena. Lindsay and Jared spent countless hours at Grandpa and Grandma’s riding and brushing ponies. For several years he was the wrangler for the horse program at Camp Geiger Boy Scout Camp in St. Joseph, Mo where he enjoyed introducing a whole new generation to the “cowboy way”.
Years of Duane’s participation in the Taylor County Sheriff’s Posse, trail rides, horse shows, rodeos, jackpot ropings, and saddle making forged many enduring friendships. These adventures also generated, shall we say, “more than a few crazy stories” that have been told over the years and now are ours to cherish. And we all know how Duane loved to tell a good story!
In 2013 Duane moved to town where he and his little terrier, Scootie were often seen zipping around Savannah together.
He is survived by a son, Doyle Book and wife Micki of Harrison, AR; a daughter, JoEllen Sommer and husband John of Oregon, Mo; a sister, LulaMae Beck and husband Duane of Sharpsburg, IA; 3 grandchildren Lindsay Breadon and husband Michael of Kaufman, TX; Jared Sommer of Cosby, Mo, and Marc Edens and wife Paula of Lawton, OK; 8 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Jordan, Austin, Hudson, Cole, Sean, Braden, and Brea, along with many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He is also survived by his beloved dog Scootie. Duane was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Janet.

Hullinger, Nancy Karen Needham - Celebration of Life Funeral Services for Nancy Hullinger, age 76, Bedford, who passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2016 in Corning, Iowa, will be held Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at 1:00 PM at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 11 AM until service time at 1 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be held at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association. Memories may be shared at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.
Nancy Karen Needham was born on October 4, 1939 at the family home west of Bedford in rural Taylor County, Iowa. Dennis and Violet (Johnson) Needham had four children: Lilian, Glen, Nadine and Nancy. Nancy attended elementary school at Timberlake Country School and then attended High School in Bedford and Ames, Iowa.
Life was not easy for the Needham’s. When Nancy was just a month old her brother Glen died at the age of 15 from a burst appendix. The death of their only son was very difficult on both Dennis and Violet. Dennis died just a few years later when Nancy was just five years old, with his death Violet moved the family to town – Bedford. Violet baked pies for restaurants to bring in some income. Lilian took care of the household and the younger children.
By the time Nancy was a young teenager all of the losses and difficulties in their life took a toll on her mother and Violet entered a psychiatric hospital. Over the next several years Violet would move in and out of the hospital.
When Violet went into the hospital Nancy lived with Bob and Lilian for a while. She then moved to Ames to live with Nadine and Jim. She attended high school and worked for HyVee. Nadine and Jim were planning on moving so they brought Nancy back home to Bedford to live with her mother.
It was in Bedford, at a dance, that she met Bill Hullinger, a college man. He was attracted to her because “she was a good looking little gal and a great dancer!” On June 1, 1957 about a year after they started dating they were married in Corning, Iowa at the Baptist parsonage. For the first few years of marriage they lived with Bill’s folks Lloyd and Clara Hullinger. Clara and Nancy would have their battles over the years but Lloyd was the dad she never had.
Bill and Nancy had four children: Dennis, Bill, Deborah and Jennifer. As Bill went to school and then started teaching and moving through different positions each one trying to make a little more money, Nancy raised the children and made a home. There was even a period of time when Violet lived with them. Over the years they would live in: Winston, MO; Highland, KS; Griswold, IA; Glenwood, IA; Hopkins, MO; Bedford, IA; Kellerton, IA; and Albert City, IA finally at retirement moving back to Bedford to the Hullinger family land.
When you have to list an occupation it says homemaker, but Nancy was so much more than that. In each of those places when the houses were less than liveable, Nancy would work to make them homes. She would fill them with her handiwork, the smell of wonderful meals and would make sure there was always plenty for the wayward guest. Holidays were special times with every nook and cranny decorated.
Her family and her children were the core of her life. For someone whose mother was not fully present – Nancy became the mom her mom never was. She believed her children should have experiences and learn from them. She had a deep belief in what was right. She knew what it was like to go hungry and would not allow anyone in her house to go hungry. She did things like play catch with Dennis to warm up before ball games or bake pies or fix home economics assignments for Debbie and Jennifer. Nancy thought of others before herself and would have given up her own food, medication, and shirt of her back if her children, grandchildren or anyone else needed it.
Nancy taught herself how to sew, embroider, crochet, and paint. She was gifted. There is just no two ways about it – she was an artist and so creative. You couldn’t beat her cooking! Homemade pizza, Spanish Rice, Dinner Rolls, Vegetable Beef Soup, Fried Chicken, and Mashed potatoes to just name a few.
She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren and there isn’t one that didn’t get one of her handmade blankets. The grandchildren have always been able to get away with a whole lot more than her children. She has been an important part of each of their lives from a young age by allowing them a chance to learn and be loved by her generosity, her faithfulness, strong will and determination.
Nancy went to the Corning hospital on Tuesday, August 30 and on Wednesday morning August 31, after a bath, a massage, a walk in the hall and her hair looking spiffy she peacefully died almost attaining the age of 77. She was preceded in death by her brother Glen Needham; her parents Dennis and Violet Needham; her in-laws Lloyd and Clara Hullinger; and sister Lilian Barnes.

Lucas, James Franklin - All of God’s Creatures Great and Small welcomed into Heaven one of its most revered friends and veterinarians on Friday, June 3, 2016, when Dr. James Franklin Lucas, known as “Jim” or “Doc,” passed away peacefully after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease
Jim is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mildred Kay Lucas, and their four children, Jamie, Matt, Shelly, and Joe, their spouses and friend, along with nine grandchildren. Jim and Kay’s first born, Baby Daniel, passed away at three days old.
The son of Max and Dorothy Lucas, Jim was born April 14, 1939, in a farmhouse near the family farm, three years after older brother, Donovan. Jim and Don grew up driving tractors, plowing fields, raking hay, and choring for cattle and pigs (in addition to fishing, hunting, and getting into a lot of mischief).
Following graduation from Bedford High School in 1957, Jim’s love for farm life and animals landed him in vet school at Iowa State University. Kay joined Jim at ISU in 1958, and they were married on December 18, 1960. Upon earning their degrees from ISU, Jim and Kay returned to Bedford in 1964 to start a family and begin a long-time career in doctoring animals across southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri. But, caring for animals wasn’t enough for Jim. The country boy at heart continued to farm the family land, growing his Angus herd and harvesting crops. Everyone who knew Jim knows that he would still be practicing veterinary medicine, farming the land, and befriending everyone he came into contact with if the slight tremor in his left hand had never started in 1986. Parkinson’s symptoms took many things away from Jim, but it could never rob him of his smiles, laughs, jokes and passions he shared with everyone.
Family and friends celebrated Jim’s life at a Visitation on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 and at a Celebration of Life Funeral Service on June 8, 2016, at the United Christian Presbyterian Church in Bedford, Iowa. Dr. Jim Cummings led services. Doc was laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery in Bedford, Iowa. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

He vividly remembered everyone on his paper route, and where everyone in school lived. He remembered every car all the guys drove, which was something he never had; he rode his bicycle or walked most places.
Jerry's ashes were interred at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella, Ca. He will be missed by many but his memories will remain forever.

Sandburn, James "Earl" - James 'Earl' Sanburn was called home to rope his final calf on Friday, May 27, 2016 surrounded by his wife, Jane and children. Earl was born on August 7, 1942 to H. Lee and Mable (Franklin) Sanburn in Lenox, Iowa. He was welcomed home by his sister, Jean. As a child, he enjoyed playing farmer with his sister, making fences and corner posts from twigs. Later, Earl made a harness and reins with the help of his Dad, so Nancy, his goat could pull him in his red wagon. He never passed up the opportunity to go horseback riding when given a chance, especially his father’s team. Raised in the rural areas around Lenox, Bedford, Conway and Nodaway, Iowa. Earls early school years started in Conway, then Jr. High and High School were completed in Nodaway. Earl married Carolyn Dunn of Nodaway August 10, 1957 and to this union, 3 children were born, Terri, Tracy and Cody. In 1959, Earl moved his family to Corning when he started working at Conoco Oil. Along with breezing race horses in the early hours at the Race Horse Track, where later he learned to shoe the trotter and race horses from Herbert Sitz, known as 'Ole Man Sitz'. In 1960, he hired out as a lineman, trouble shooter and later a technician with Western Telephone Company, now known as Frontier. He worked there for 25 years. Earl became disabled from an automobile accident in 1985 which was the beginning of the end for Earl’s career in many different ways. Early on, Earl always had a talent with his hands when it came to fixing broken horse tack with a fancy knot or braid. He prized himself to perfection with his braiding. This brought him to teach himself to braid rawhide knots on the leather headstalls. Earl was by all means a master at braiding rawhide, along with an expert on bits as well. His love for horses developed at a very young age and grew to be a very big part of his life for many years. Earl was very fortunate to have owned several very nice roping horses. One that took him to a championship in Calf Roping at Grand River, Iowa in 1971. Earl was a URA-IRCA card holder. Earl enjoyed showing his horses as well as trading a few along the way. Hunting was another of Earl’s hobbies. He always liked to watch a good dog work. German Short Hairs and Black Labrador Retrievers were his favorite. On June 15, 1985, Earl married Jenalee Jane (Beckett) Curphey of Lenox. They resided north of Lenox for a short time, then to Sidney, Iowa. Later they found themselves moving to Wickenburg, Arizona for 18 years, moving to North Platte, NE 2014. After Earls failing health put an end to his roping and riding horses, he found much enjoyment doing more of his rawhide braiding. The two of them went to many horse events in S.W. Iowa and Eastern Nebraska, displaying his tack with his craftsmanship of braiding on it. One of Earl and Jane's highlights was setting up their line of tack at the USTRC Roping at Sidney, Iowa every year, even after their move to Arizona they continued to come back for it until 2006. They always combined this trip with visiting their friends and family as well. While in Arizona, the two of them traveled around to more horse events, enjoying the new friends they made in conversations about horses and tack. Earl and Jane enjoyed several years in Arizona riding their horses, Rebel and Lucky, in the desert, along with Bodie, their black lab, a constant companion to Earl. All enjoying the beauty of the desert. The horses soon became therapy pets with Earls health failing. He was very strong and determined to beat all of his health issues. Never giving up to the very end! Earl was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He will be missed and loved, but we know he is no longer in pain and is now in heaven at peace with our maker. He is survived by his wife, Jane; daughters, Terri Sanburn (Gary Warner) of Stapleton and Tracy (Sean) Jackson of North Platte; son, Cody (Triana) Sanburn of Lincoln; grandsons, Aidan and Kade; 10 step grandchildren; 6 step great grandchildren; sister, Jean Moore of Clarinda; neice, Marilyn (Kim) Shore of Clarinda; nephew, Jeff (Lisa) Moore of California; stepsons, Richard (Kathy) Curphey of Cedar Rapids, IA, Mike (Bobbie) Curphey of Texas and Gary Curphey of Sharpsburg, IA; sisters-in-law, Leola Adams and Lois Lamb both of Mt. Ayr, IA, Imogene Mains and Janice (Mike) Miller both of Creston, IA; brother-in-law, David Beckett of Lenox, IA; cousin, Robert Miller of Sand Springs, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Joe Neuhardt; brothers-in-law, Marty Moore and Earl Beckett; and a step grandson

Walston, Thelma Loris Tamerius - Thelma Loris Tamerius Walston was born January 28, 1917 in Benton Township, Ringgold County Iowa to Frank and Ruth Scott Tamerius. She went to heaven from a peaceful sleep on July 26, 2016 in her rural Bedford home at the age of 99 years and 6 months.
Her family moved to Blockton, Iowa when she was a young girl. There she had to help support them by getting various jobs. Her first was a paper route for the Des Moines Register, which she picked up from the train that ran close to their home. She also would do laundry for passengers. At the age of 12 her job as a cook and house girl for a farm family began early in the morning, as she would walk over 4 miles to be there in time to start breakfast which always included fresh biscuits.
Thelma accepted Christ as her savior and was baptized at the Christian church in Blockton. She attended Blockton School. She participated in basketball while in high school.
On September 24, 1934 she was united in marriage to Vane Edward Walston at the Christian Church parsonage in Bedford, Iowa. They started their married life in Ringgold County Iowa moving to Taylor County in 1936. After moving several times they bought their first farm in 1949, the place we kids still call “Down Home”.
They raised a family of nine children: Eddie, Ann, Janice, John, Bob, Karen, Glen, Teresa and David. She was “Mother of the Year” every year to her children.
She assumed the responsibility of her home and family with quiet contentment, using what she had available to provide for her family. She was a seamstress, gardener, raised chickens and of course from years of experience already an excellent cook. The term homemaker did not do her justice.
She was a gentle caregiver, not only to her children and grandchildren, but also two nieces and in later years her husband.
She enjoyed her neighborhood women’s clubs throughout the years, the last being the Union Country Club.
Thelma was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and was active in Circle.
As her children grew she continued her love of reading, even to others, quilting, crocheting, and weaving rugs on her floor loom. Her natural artistic talent was evident through her many creations.
Thelma was a lover of nature; she enjoyed feeding and watching birds, planting flowers and trees; planting for the next generation.
Her strength and ability to cope, with grace and dignity the trials of life will continue to be an inspiration to us all.
Thelma was preceded in death by her oldest son, Edward Alan in 1966. Her husband of 62 years, Vane, and her three brothers, J.D., Ralph, and Terence all passed away within a few months and later, her sister, Francel Barton.

Walter, Josephine B. Beach - Celebration of Life Funeral Services for Josephine (Beach) Walter, age 93, of Pella, Iowa, formerly of Lenox, Iowa, who entered into God's Kingdom August 29, 2016, will be held Friday, September 2, 2016, at 10:00 AM at the Lenox United Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be Thursday at the Lenox United Methodist Church from 3 to 7 with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7. Private family interment will be held at the West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Friends are invited to partake of lunch and a time of fellowship at the church. The family will join you after the private interment. Memorial contributions may be designated to the Lenox ambulance service % Jan Beach Sickels 302 W. Temple Street, Lenox, IA 50851 or to your favorite charity in memory of Jo Walter. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox, Iowa.
Josephine Beach was born October 30, 1922 in the family home six miles southwest of Lenox, Iowa to parents Clifford and Eula Page Beach. She left this world and entered into God’s Kingdom August 29, 2016.
She was the seventh child of ten born to the family and was raised on a farm just down the hill from the home of her Uncle George and Aunt Luella Cowan Beach and their seven children. Thus Jo grew up surrounded by siblings and cousins. She attended Beachdale School in the country through grade school and then continued her education at Lenox High School.
As a freshman, she met Julian Walter, the young man who was to become her husband and life-long companion. They graduated in May 1939 and Julian left for California where he attended a junior college. By the summer of 1940 he was pulled back to Iowa by Jo, the love of his life, and by the farm. When Julian was put in charge of the farm by his father he asked Jo, “Would you help me?” She said she would and she did in so many ways!
They were married in the big Beach family farm house on top of the hill on December 29, 1940. They began their life together living in the house on the Walter family farm five miles northwest of Lenox, Iowa. Three children were born to them: Marvin and Jean and Joan. They lived and farmed there for 57 years, raising their children, getting them through high school and helping them go off to college, get married and start their own families.
Jo and Julian knew how to work hard and how to have fun together – square dancing, playing cards, and socializing with friends. They went on family vacations to California, Minnesota and Colorado and also took the kids fishing, canoeing, and picnicking. In later years they wintered on Padre Island, Texas and made many lasting friendships.
When the old farm house started deteriorating they designed and built a new house just west of it. The house was finished in 1977 and provided years of spacious and comfortable country living for them, their kids and their grandkids when they came to visit. Those visits were highlights of their lives.
Jo was a long time member of the Lenox United Methodist Church and served in many capacities. She thoroughly enjoyed her country neighborhood club, the Friendly Neighbors and belonged to the Daughters of the Revolution. She also helped organize the Lenox Assembly of Rainbow for girls. Jo belonged to the Order of Eastern Star, was a District Instructor, held an appointed office in Grand Chapter, and then served as Worthy Grand Matron of Iowa in 1967.
Jo was a “good cooker” as her kids used to say, and was famous for her cinnamon rolls, home made doughnuts, sour cream chocolate cakes, and ham balls. She did everything and anything needed of a farmer’s wife and mother of three children.
In her later years she became skilled at counted cross stitching, quilting, and china painting. When computers first became available Jo purchased an Apple E and taught herself how to use it. Her first big project was printing the programs for their 50th anniversary. She also put her computer skills to very good use when she realized her passion for genealogy, resulting in thoroughly researched and printed books of the Walter and the Beach family genealogies. She played a part in the publication of two Beach Family cookbooks and has been the official Beach family historian for many years.
In 1990 Jo and Julian celebrated their Golden Anniversary with family and friends. Julian retired from farming in 1997 and again the couple designed a new home, this one built in Lenox. In 2007 they quietly celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.
Josephine was a loving wife, a wonderful mother, and a great role model for her grandchildren. She set the bar very high! Jo was well loved by her immediate family, her extended family, and her many friends, and will be profoundly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Julian, her parents Eula and Cliff Beach, and her siblings Bob, Hal, Luella, Walter, Don, Dale, Bill, Marjorie, and Elizabeth. Also preceding Jo in death were her grandson Jeff Lucas, daughter-in-law Marsha Jadrnicek Walter, and her son-in-law Larry Smith.
She is survived by son Marvin Walter and wife Rosemary; daughter Jean Miller and husband Jeff; and daughter Joan Lucas and husband Tim. Also surviving are grandsons Kipp Walter, Ted Lucas and wife Jennifer; and Dan Smith, granddaughters Kristi Jones and husband Tim; Lisa Fenske, and Julie Smith; great-grand sons Walter Fenske, Wyatt Lucas, and Cole Lucas; and great-granddaughters Josephine “Josie” Fenske, Paige Smith and Alma Rodriguez.
Josephine was a woman of many talents, but most of all she was the ultimate care giver of her immediate family and of her extended family. In her later years, in keeping with her role as Matriarch of the Beach family, she was the glue that held this rambunctious, ever expanding family together
