Interment will be held at West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.
Agnes Porter was born in 1912 on a farm near Quincy, Iowa, the youngest of 12 children. She graduated from Corning High School, and in 1933, two days after her 21st birthday she married the love of her life, Harley Porter, who she met at a street dance in Gravity, Iowa. They had to elope in secret because Harley was the teacher at a one-room country school, where male teachers were not allowed to married. After losing two sons in infancy, they adopted their only child, Joe in 1939.
A $100 gift from Harley's grandfather allowed them to go the Iowa City where Harley graduated from the University of Iowa. They both worked hard, and one of Agnes's favorite stories was telling of their experiences hitchhiking home to Lenox for holidays.
In 1942, the couple moved to Utah to work for the war effort at the Tooele Ordinance Depot where they lived for thirty years, first in Tod Park, the housing area on the government base, and later Tooele where they were active members of the First Methodist Church. Agnes was the first postmistress at TOD Park. She eventually retired as head of the Disbursement Office in the Finance and Accounting Division for the Ordnance Depot. Agnes was an active community leader and served as the Utah State President of the National Federation of Federal Employees.
After the couple retired in 1971 they returned to Lenox where they lived until Harley's death in 1988 and, in 1990, Agnes moved to Denver to be near her son and his family.
Agnes loved her large family, and she loved telling their stories. In her 80's and 90's she wrote two books: Smatterings and Our Family Album, about her family and farm life as a child. She lived with passion to within 29 days of 100 years. She was a bit of a crusader who subtly, and sometimes not so subtly, was an inspiration to those around her |
