Wm. was the son of John and Catherine (Bristow) Evans, (1820 - 1864), natives of VA and OH, respectively.
His siblings were: Margaret Jane Turner; Jesse Joshua; Euphemia Ann Golding May; James A.; Sarah E. Smith ; Ellen Campbell ; Mary Ada Thompson; and Delilah Maxwell.
When he reached his majority his father gave him 80 acres, and he farmed in Benton township until 1872, when he was elected co. auditor. In Bedford, he became postmaster, co. treasurer, entered the grocery business with his brother Jesse J., and then elected co. treasurer, again.
He was Sec. of the Taylor Co. Agricultural Soc. for 12 yrs. Mr. Evans held membership in the Baptist church, Sedgwick Post, No. 10, G.A.R., the Republican party, the party of reform and progress.
On the 9th of Aug, 1862, he enlisted as a Pvt., Co F, 29th Ia Vol. Inf., Union side,and mustered out Aug 9, 1865 as a 2nd Lt.
He married 13 Feb,1862, (1.)Amanda Lewis, (1843 - 1904) daughter of Wm. and Mary Jane (Van Meter) Lewis. 3 sons were born: Charles Ira., Omer L., and Arthur B, all of Parsons, Ks. Mrs. Evans died in 1904, age 61. Sometime later, Mr. Evans married (2.) Mrs. Elizabeth Ann (Lewis) McCracken, (1836 - 1916) widow of Thomas J. McCracken and sister of his first wife.
