Most of the cemeteries in Tama County were recorded in
the 1930s, as part of the WPA Cemetery Project, and
this is still one of our main sources of information.
You can find the WPA cemetery listing for Tama County
on line at WPA Iowa Graves Survey.
If you do not know the cemetery, but you have a
surname, go to the WPA SURNAME INDEX or else
use the search tool on the homepage.
The # column gives the number of records listed, for each cemetery. It does not list the number of stones, or number of people. Many of the stones are illegible. The easiest way to find a certain section in a township is to look at one of the township maps, for example, the ones in the Atlas of Tama County (1916). Look in the menu bar on the right. Each section is a one-mile square. Most of the cemeteries are actually marked, with a cross, on the maps. More recently, the IOWA GRAVESTONE PHOTO PROJECT has a growing collection of photos and related information. You are welcome to search for or submit gravestone photos. Here is the SURNAME INDEX to Tama Co. Gravestone Photos Another valuable resource is the Find A Grave website. Be advised that photos may be copyrighted. Please read the Iowa Cemetery Laws and Procedures if you are planning to visit a cemetery to record information.
