Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Story County, Iowa was published in 1890 by the Goodspeed Publishing Company of Chicago, Illinois using the press of the John Morris Company. The publisher, Weston A. Goodspeed, was a graduate of the Iowa Agriculural College (now Iowa State Univerity) in Ames, Iowa.
The history contains 450 pages in 21 chapters. The first 11 chapters are a condensed history of the State of Iowa, written by Weston A. Goodspeed. Chapters 12 through 14 were written by Col. John Scott, a well-known civil war veteran of Nevada, Iowa. The remaining chapters were written by the Rev. B. A. Konkle with the exception of Chapter 19 on the State Agricultural College which was written by Prof. J. C. Hainer.
The pages in this book were captured from PDF using optical character recognition. This process can introduce errors in the transcription. In a few instances, an image of more complicated text is displayed rather than actual text.
The surnames found in the Story County history and biographical sections of the book are available here for searching and are also included in the general surname search function on the Story County home page. The State of Iowa history section was not surname indexed.
A big thank you to Tammi Jones who indexed the names in the biographies. Without her assistance this project would never have gotten off the ground.
The biographies, which start on page 276, provide an important source of biographical data otherwise lost because of the destruction of the 1890 census. While there may be many mistakes in the biographies, they can still provide important family research clues.
