CPL. TERRY "MIKE" WESTERGARD.
Funeral services for Lance Cpl. Terry "Mike" Westergard, 20, a U.S. Marine from rural Ireton, were held last Friday afternoon in St. Paul's Lutheran church in Ireton. Rev. Arthur Anacker officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery in Ireton under the direction of Dow Funeral Home.
Mrs. Allen Bertram was organist, and the St. Paul's quartet sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Be Still My Soul." Casket bearers were Steve Adams, Jerry Vander Esch, Steve Wagers, Dave Kemper, Denny Wasser, and Rodney Karr.
Westergard was born October 6, 1948 in Hawarden and was graduated from West Sioux high school in 1966. He entered the service June 22, 1967, and had been in Vietnam since November, 1967.
He was killed in action on November 12, 1968, and buried with full military rites at graveside.
Surviving besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Westergard of Ireton, are a sister, Miss Katherine Anne, at home, and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Westergard of Ireton and Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Jackson of Vermillion.
Corporal James Wilker, who had been with Westergard in Vietnam and was slated to come home with him before Christmas, was chosen as the military escort for the body. Wilker, who lives in Waseca, Minnesota, will not have to return to Vietnam.
