Petersen, age 85, of Council Bluffs passed away September 28, 2008, at his home. Robert was born September 18, 1923, in Green Castle, Missouri to the late Nels and Marie (Nielsen) Petersen. At the age of one he moved with his family to Macedonia, Iowa where he graduated from high school in 1942. After helping his father farm for 3 years, he moved to Atlantic, Iowa and worked for Earl May. He started working construction when they added onto the light plant. Robert stayed in construction working for Winger Construction. In 1952 he married Erna Barker and they moved to Council Bluffs. Robert joined the union and worked for Weibe Construction. He was vice president for 9 years before starting his own company, Petersen Construction Company. Robert retired at the age of 77. He was a member of Saint John Lutheran Church. Robert was preceded in death by his sister, Annie Henry; brothers, Victor and Henry Petersen. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Erna Petersen of Council Bluffs; stepdaughters, Jackie Andersen and husband Roger of Elk Horn, Iowa, Janet Berger of Audubon, Iowa; stepsons, Connie L. Barker and wife Dorcee of Fort Mohave, Ariz., Gary L. Barker and wife Colleen of Lincoln, Neb.; 12 step grandchildren; 48 step great grandchildren; 7 step great great grandchildren; nephews, Kenneth Petersen of Salt Lake City, Utah, Kendall Petersen of Omaha, Neb., Rich Henry of Macedonia; and brother-in-law, James Henry of Macedonia. burial of her ashes to be held at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Irwin. Gertrude Will
died on Friday, October 3rd in Denison. There will be no visitation. The Burmeister-
Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan is in charge of the arrangements. Gertrude June Lesher Cross Will was born August 14, 1926, on the family farm,
three miles west of Clarion, Iowa, to Lawrence Hauman and Bernice Christina
(Bubeck) Lesher. She attended country school in Dayton Township, went to Clarion
(Iowa) High School, and graduated in 1943. Gertrude worked in the high school
office for Mr. Christensen and in the Courthouse. She later went to Des Moines,
Iowa, to work for a cosmetic company, and in 1945, she moved to Denver, Colorado. True and Gertrude had three children, Thomas, Randall and Kathryn. They operated a crop and dairy farm business, milking up to 190 Jersey cows at the operation west of Cedar Falls, and crop farming locations south of Cedar Falls and Waterloo, Iowa. Gertrude was part of the farm venture, working in the small calf nursery and dairy operations. Gertrude also worked seven years for the Waterloo Probationary Court as a technical secretary. Gertrude’s husband, TAA., preceded her in death on November 30, 1986. She met and married Delbert Will of Irwin, Iowa. Delbert was a crop and livestock farmer and they eventually retired, traveled and moved into Irwin. Delbert died in 2001. Gertrude was an active member of the Irwin Church of Christ. She was also a member of the Library Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Shelby County Garden Club, and the Ladies Missionary Society. Gertrude J. Will died on October 3, 2008, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, having reached the age of 82 years, 1 month, and 19 days. Preceding Gertrude in death were her parents; her husbands, TAA. Cross and Delbert Will; and two brothers, Melvin Lesher and Orville Lesher. She is survived by three children, Thomas (Rebecca) Cross of South Beloit, Illinois, Randall Cross of Waterloo, Iowa, and Kathryn Morris of New Virginia, Iowa; one sister, Beulah Lesher of Iowa; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and other relatives and friends. Watson, age 65, of Omaha, Neb., died October 21, 2008. James was born
on October 8, 1943, in Trenton, Mo., to Woodrow and Eva (Ogen) Watson. James
had a Master of Science in Psychology. He has served the youth of our community
and the Omaha Public School System. Jim also served others through his counseling
service, Abuse Hurts. Jim also was a member of the Council Bluffs Sailing Club
and had many friends through a tennis club, investment club, and a men's group.
His generosity was immeasurable through donations and time to Byron Katie, to
the YMCA, and the United Way. In addition to his parents, James is survived
by his sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Cecilia Watson, of Olive Branch,
Miss., and Eric and Mirna Watson, of San Antonio, Texas; brother and sister-in-law,
Dwayne and Penny Watson, of Kansas, Okla.; 6 grandchildren; aunts, uncles, nieces,
nephews and cousins. Visitation with the family is Saturday, 1-2 p.m., at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring

She attended country school near her home in Guthrie County. Ethel then worked in Omaha, Nebraska at Wilson Packing. On February 7, 1946 Ethel was united in marriage with Jake T. Smouse at the Gospel Tabernacle in Omaha by Rev. R.R. Brown. A daughter, Donna, was born into this union. Ethel and Jake made their home in Coon Rapids, Iowa, where they owned and operated Smouse Jewelry Store until their retirement in 1983. As a member of the First United Methodist Church, Ethel was active in leading group meetings and in the offices of the secretary and treasurer. She was also a 50 year member of the Rebekah Lodge. In 2001, Ethel became a resident of Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids. She died there on November 14, 2008 at the age of 93 years, 6 months and 12 days. Besides her parents, Ethel was preceded in death by a grandson Jacob "Jake" Hughes; sister Helen Brumback; and brothers John, Art, Clarence and Sam Nelson. and Lula (Boeck) Rasmussen, was born on January 16, 1934, in Harlan, Iowa. Franklin
was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. He attended
Elementary and High School in Harlan, graduating in 1952. In 1957, Franklin was married to Doris Dalrymple. Two children, Mark and Erik, were born to this union. On January 21, 1989, Franklin married Donna Marie Williams at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Franklin was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, where he had served as treasurer. He was also active with the Boy Scouts. Franklin, along with Ed Swank and Jerry Lytle, founded Concerned, Inc. in Harlan. This service began in a small house on Eighth Street in Harlan. It was later relocated to a new building on Willow Street, and now is located on Industrial Parkway. He loved to fish in Missouri and Canada, and enjoyed traveling with Donna. Franklin C. Rasmussen died on Monday, October 6, 2008, in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 74 years, 8 months, and 20 days. Franklin was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Bob Rasmussen; and one sister, Karlene Rasmussen. He is survived by his wife, Donna (Williams) Rasmussen of Harlan, Iowa; two sons, Mark Rasmussen of Harlan, Iowa, and Erik Rasmussen of Glenwood, Iowa; two grandchildren, Matthew Rasmussen of Harlan, Iowa, and Katie Ann Rasmussen of Ames, Iowa; and other relatives and friends. (Herbst) Patten, was born on July 19, 1957, in Harlan, Iowa. He attended the
Harlan Community Schools. On May 11, 1974, Horse married Tami Ann Holzer in
Lohraville, Iowa. They remained very close friends. In 1977, Larry entered the
United States Marine Corps; he served his country for three years. Horse enjoyed hunting and fishing, and especially like to spend time with his dog, Lucas. Larry L. On March 10, 1942 Mildred was united in marriage with Emmert Olson at Maryville, Missouri. The couple made their home on a farm southeast of Elk Horn where Mildred worked as a homemaker and helped out on the farm. After the death of her husband on December 7, 1975, Mildred remained on the farm and began working as a nurse’s aid. In 1984 she moved to Elk Horn. Mildred was a life-long member of Elk Horn Lutheran Church and in her spare time she enjoyed gardening and playing cards. In 2003 Mildred became a resident of Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn. She died there on October 24, 2008 at the age of 94 years, 1 month and 27 days. was born on June 18, 1928 in Union Township, Shelby County, Iowa. He was raised
in the Defiance, Iowa, area and attended Defiance area country school. For a
time, he drove a produce truck for Goeser Produce in Defiance. In December 1946,
Herb enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was stationed at Fort Crook, Nebraska.
In 1948, Herbert was assigned to the 5001st Supply Squadron in Alaska as an
ammunition worker. He was honorably discharged as a Private First Class in the
USAF on December 12, 1949. Herbert was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. He enjoyed gardening and raised vegetables. He also participated in the annual Christmas Lights Contest in Harlan. Herbert J. Mengwasser died on Friday, November 14, 2008, at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, at the age of 80 years, 4 months, and 27 days. was born on November 8, 1914, near Corley, Iowa. She attended Fairview Township
country school through the eighth grade. On August 2, 1939, Zelda married Norman
Russell Johannsen in Avoca, Iowa. From 1940-1975, the couple farmed in Jackson
and Monroe Townships. In 1975, their son, Galan, and his family moved to the
farm, and Norman and Zelda moved to an acreage in Monroe Township. They lived
there for ten years before retiring to Harlan, Iowa. In May, 2007, Zelda became
a resident of the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa. Zelda was an active member of Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa, where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent. She was a member of the Farm Bureau Women, and was named the Farm Bureau Homemaker of the Year in 1954. Zelda was involved in various neighborhood clubs, including the Meet Your Neighbor Club and the Friday Club. Zelda M. Johannsen died on Friday, October 17, 2008, at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa, at the age of 93 years, 11 months, and 9 days. Zelda was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Alvin Burmeister and Harry Burmeister; and one son-in-law, Willis Krummel. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Norman Johannsen of Harlan, Iowa; one daughter, JoAnn Krummel of Avoca, Iowa; one son, Galan (Janet) Johannsen of Harlan, Iowa; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. -------------------------------------------------- James, Daisy June (Lidgett) November 16, 1924 - October 23, 2008 Daisy June (Lidgett) James Daisy June James, the daughter of John Lewis and Daisy (Whiltshire) Lidgett,
was born on November 16, 1924, in Elgin, Nebraska. She attended school in Elgin
and Neligh, Nebraska. On January 18, 1940, in Yankton, South Dakota, Daisy married
George Hanley James. The couple moved to the Harlan, Iowa, area in 1941, where
Daisy was employed as a waitress for Ray and Fern Rasmussen. She also helped
area farmers with their farm work. For many years, Daisy and George worked on
a rented farm located south of Harlan. George died on June 19, 1973; during
that fall, she moved into Harlan. Daisy, whose favorite color was red, enjoyed reading, playing cards with her grandchildren, and doing crossword puzzles. She spent time crocheting and mending, and was a great cook. Having lived through the Great Depression, she was known as a thrifty individual. After her retirement, she enjoyed babysitting. Daisy recognized the importance of blood donation, and had the distinction of having personally donated nearly eight gallons. Daisy J. James died on Thursday, October 23, 2008, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 83 years, 11 months, and 7 days. Daisy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Hanley James; and two sisters, Dolly Imsiek and Roma Good. She is survived by three sons, Hanley James of North Carolina, Rusty (Claudia) James of Des Moines, Iowa, and Michael (Kay) James of Council Bluffs, Iowa; one daughter, Patty (Pete) Stein of Portsmouth, Iowa; one sister, Dona Ganskow of Marbury, Maryland; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. He was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Polk Township. Juny was a 1944 graduate from Kirkman High School. As a boy he was active in 4-H Club and showed cattle at the Iowa State Fair. Juny worked on the family farm and for other area farmers, drove a livestock truck and delivered the Sunday newspaper. On November 13, 1949, Juny was united in marriage with Ladelle Wiese at Sioux City. The couple lived near Manilla and farmed with his brother Homer. Beginning in 1970 Juny worked at Farmland Foods in Denison for 17 years. They moved closer to Manilla in 1981. Juny was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. He enjoyed watching auto racing and was a Dale Earnhardt fan. Juny enjoyed special times at the lake, family gatherings and especially time with his grandchildren. In August 2008 Juny’s health began to decline. He died at home in Manilla surrounded by his family on Monday night, November 3, 2008, at the age of 82 years and 17 days. Juny is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Raynard, Alvin and Homer Hanson; brother-in-law Allan Wiese; and sisters-in-law Lyla Thompson, Phyllis Hanson and Ruby Hanson. Iowa, and graduated from Irwin High School in 1935. Mildred lived in California
for a short time before returning to Iowa. In the mid-1940s, she married Larry
Griener. Mildred settled in Harlan, Iowa, where she owned and operated the Griener
Café for many years. Mildred L. Griener died on Tuesday, November 18, 2008, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa, having reached the age of 90 years, 3 months, and 29 days. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Larry Griener; one sister, Norma Barratt; and two brothers, Harold Brue and Lavern Brue. She is survived by one stepson, Bruce (Sharon) Griener of Chicago, Illinois; one brother, Bill (Peggy) Brue of Irwin, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. on September 3, 1919 on a farm southeast of Harlan, Iowa. He attended Jackson
#8 country school through the eighth grade and then worked for various area
farmers. On August 6, 1941 Everett married Mabel Hansen in Omaha, Nebraska.
The couple farmed for six years before purchasing a trucking business from Marcussen
Brothers. Mabel passed away in August 1975. On July 19, 1986 Everett married
Virginia “Ginnie” O’Neil. She passed away in January 2006.
Everett continued to operate a gas station and tire business until January 2008.
On February 6 of this year he became a resident of the Salem Lutheran Home in
Elk Horn, Iowa. Everett passed away October 28, 2008 at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 1 month, and 25 days. Everett was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Alvina Greve, his first wife, Mabel (Hansen) Greve, his second wife, Virginia “Ginnie” (O’Neil) Greve, and one brother, Elliot Greve. Gahm, age 42, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., died October 22, 2008. Kurt was born on February 4, 1966, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Charles J. (Joe) and Norma J. (Graybill) Gahm. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1984 and attended airline school in St. Louis, Mo. Kurt was employed in the airline industry for several years, based in Kansas City, Mo., then moved with his family to Tennessee in 1990. He was seriously injured in a work-related accident in 1999, and was disabled as a result of his injuries.
