MEMORIAL DAY, LE MARS, IA, MAY 1980

LeMars Co. A, Iowa National Guard early Monday morning dedicated a Capt. Jacob G. Koenig and 1st Lt. Corbin C. Tindall memorial before guardsmen took part in the LeMars Memorial Day Parade and Avenue of Flags ceremonies. Capt. Koenig was the first unit commander when the company was designated Co. K.

Seated in the lawn memorial in front of the Koenig armory (from left) are Mrs. Avis Fjestad, the former Mrs. Corbin Tindall, now of Dahlen, N.D. and her son, Brian, 10, and Jean Koenig, LeMars, daughter of the late Capt. Koenig. Both women spoke briefly during the dedication. Lt. Tindall was the only Co. A member killed in action after Co. A was called for active duty during the Vietnam Conflict.  ~LeMars Daily Sentinel, Tuesday, May 27, 1980

A small crowd of spectators and members of Co. A attended the war memorial dedication. Co. A commander Lt. Mike Sitzmann (at podium) explained the purpose of the lighted memorial. He said three more plaques will be added as funds allow. The plaques will honor those company members killed in action during World Wars I and II and retired company members. A volley of gunfire and taps honored the war dead to conclude the dedication.  ~LeMars Daily Sentinel, Tuesday, May 27, 1980
