I am attempting to trace back my family (Bennett) who had previously
been early settlers in Iowa. I am a graduate student and have been
employed for the past year as a genealogical research assistant at
the Oregon Historical Society. I plan to write a family history when
I have gathered more information on the early Bennetts of Iowa.
James, Mathew, Craig, Mary Jane Bennett, and possibly other siblings
were born in the U.S.A. approximately 1825-1845. The parents were
from Ireland; as of yet their names are unknown.
James Bennett was born in Pennsylvania, Craig Bennett was born
in Guernsey County, Ohio March 20, 1830. I have no additional information
on births of other children.
James, Mathew and Craig moved to Iowa approximately 1850.
James married Sarah F. Daugherty 27 February 1861. Sarah Daugherty
was born in Delaware, Mercer County, Pennsylvania 7 September, 1841.
Her parents, John W. and Phoebe Ann (Comstock) Daugherty, were married
in Newton Falls, Ohio February 11, 1839. The mother, Phoebe Ann, was
born in Putnam, New York in 1816; she was the daughter of Abel and
Isabella (Cummings) Comstock. Sarah (Daugherty) Bennett's father,
John W. Daugherty, was born in Belmont County, Ohio and was a stone
cutter by trade. At the call for volunteers, John D. left his family
and farm and enlisted in Company F 21st Iowa Trhimrny [?] of Infantry
in August, 1862. He died in a Memphis hospital 17 April, 1863. Phoebe
Ann (Comstock) Daugherty sold her farm, traveled twice to California,
three times to Montana, once to Ohio, once to Oregon and a number
of times to Illinois.
James and Sarah (Daugherty) Bennett James moved from Dubuque County
to Page County, Iowa in 1867. Their children were: Carrie, who married
Robert Pinkerton of Clarinda, Iowa; Emma, who married Thomas Young
of Taylor County, Iowa; Ellsworth, who became a farmer in Oklahoma;
William, who moved to Colorado; James, who settled in Clarinda, Page
County, Iowa.
Carrie (Bennett) and Robert W. Pinkerton moved in March, 1886
to Moro, Sherman County, Oregon to begin a wheat farm. Mr Pinkerton's
parents were Samuel and Margueret (Smith) Pinkerton, both natives
of Ireland in the county of Antrim where the father was a farmer.
(Samuel and Margueret Pinkerton also had a daughter named Clarinda).
Matthew Bennett married Sarah A. Shafer 14 October, 1857. I have
no additional information on Matthew or Mary Jane, except that a son
of Matthew's or of one of the other siblings moved to Goldendale,
Washington with his wife prior to 1885.
Craig Bennett married Isabella B. Comstock 10 November, 1854 in
Dubuque County, Iowa. Isabella Comstock was born 1 July, 1831 in Putnam,
Washington County, New York. Her parents, Abel and Isabella (Cummings)
Comstock, were married 18 September, 1815 in Putnam, New York. Isabella's
mother, Isabella Cummings, was born in 1795. Isabella's father, Abel
Comstock, was born 1 March, 1790. Abel was a lawyer by trade. Both
parents were born and raised in Washington County, New York. (I have
traced the Comstock family back to 1595.)
After living in Dubuque County, Iowa Craig and Isabella (Comstock)
Bennett moved to Jones County and Page County, Iowa, moving to Kansas
in 1874. In 1883 they moved to Kent, Sherman County, Oregon where
they had a wheat farm and a son, Milton Howard, established the first
trading company in the County. Craig and Isabella's children were:
William James, Abel Comstock, Ralph C., Jennie C., Milton Howard,
Walter H., Isabella A., Bertie and Frank L.
