MRS. JOHN BRETHAUER                    

 

Mary Wehrkamp, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. George Wehrkamp, was born near Hanover, Germany, August 14, 1857.  At an early age she came with her parents to the United States and located in Jackson county, Indiana.  There she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and grew to womanhood.

            In 1879 she was united in marriage to John H. Brethauer.  They made their home in Indiana for 25 years then moved to Iowa where they resided until 1911 when they moved to Wisconsin, locating on a farm near New Lisbon.  Twelve children were born to this happy union, five of whom preceded their mother in death.  Mr. Brethauer died in July, 1932, and since leaving New Lisbon Mrs. Brethauer had divided her time with her children and relatives.

            Surviving are seven daughters, Mrs. Amelia Prather and Mrs. Marie Bullock, Indianapolis, Ind.; Mrs. Clara Weinitchka, Mrs. Johanna Pace, Milwaukee; Mrs. Elizabeth Finch, Mrs. Caroline Gapp, Chicago; Mrs. Edna Steeve, Clarinda; a sister, Mrs. John Sunderman, Clarinda; two brothers, Henry Wehrkamp, Clarinda, and John of Seymour, Ind.; 19 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, a host of other relatives and many friends.  All of the daughters, with their husbands and families, were in attendance at the funeral.  Other relatives attending were John Wehrkamp and E. J. Rieckers, both of Seymour, Indiana.

            The deceased will be remembered here by many as she was a former resident of the Immanuel vicinity.  She had made her home in Lisbon for the last 25 years and died in a Milwaukee hospital where she had been a patient for two months.

            Funeral services were held on October 31^st, 1937, in the St. Luke’s Lutheran church and the body was laid to rest in the New Lisbon cemetery.

 

 

LEILA IOLA WEHRKAMP

 

Leila Iola Wehrkamp, 91, of Clarinda, Iowa, died Sunday morning, November 22, 1998 at Goldenrod Manor where she had been a resident for the past 18 months.  Leila was born July 5, 1907, near Clarinda, Iowa to Joseph and Lillie Windhorst Shum.  She was married to Albert Wehrkamp, who preceded her in death.  Leila was a homemaker and cared for elderly people in her home.  She is survived by a son Glenn Wehrkamp and his wife Evyonn of Hartly, Iowa; Two daughters, Jane Wehrkamp of Coralville, Iowa; and Neola Wehrkamp of Shenandoah, Iowa.

            Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Albert; son, Charles Wehrkamp; grandson, William; brother Glen Shum and half brother, Zay Shum.

            Funeral services were Tuesday, November 24, 1998, 1:30 p.m. at the Nazarene Church, Clarinda, Iowa with Minister Leland LaRose officiating.  Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, rural Clarinda, Iowa.  Memorials may be directed to the Nazarene Church, Clarinda, Iowa.  Walker-Merrick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 

 

A WEHRKAMP LIVED HERE FOR 62 YEARS

 

            Albert C. Wehrkamp, 67, died Tuesday at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital where he had been a patient for the past four days.

            Mr Wehrkamp was born Nov. 20, 1897, at Dudley Town, Ind., the son of Henry and Lena Wehrkamp.  When he was five, he came to Page County with his parents, his home being here since that time.  He attended the Elrick School and the Immanuel Lutheran Parochial school near Clarinda.  The family farm is located just south of Clarinda where Mr Wehrkamp was engaged in farming many years.

            He is survived by his wife, Mrs Leila Wehrkamp of Clarinda; two sons and their wives, Mr and Mrs Charles Wehrkamp of Shenandoah, and Mr and Mrs Glen Wehrkamp of Hartley; two daughters, Miss Jane Wehrkamp of Iowa City and Miss Neola Wehrkamp of Shenandoah and four grandchildren.  Seven sisters survive, Clara Belle Wehrkamp in California and Mrs Herman Auber, Mrs. Anna Bobb of Seymour, Ind, Mrs Emma Herzberg of Yorktown, Mrs Ella Friesz of Albia, Neb, Hilda Wehrkamp of Clarinda, and Mrs Lela Dietchweiler of Chicago; three brothers, george of Wadsworth, Kan, William of New Market, and Henry of Bedford.

            He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Edna Wehrkamp.

            Funeral service was held this Thursday afternoon at the Williams Memorial Chapel.  The Rev Clem Keyes, pastor of the Nazarene Church, officiated.  Mrs Helen Hall Hoskinson was the organist with James and Janice Stogdill singing a duet.  Pallbearers were Lawrence Herzberg, Delbert Herzberg, Robert Wehrkamp, Donald Wehrkamp, Harry Shum, and Jimmy Shum.  Mrs. Donald Wehrkamp and Mrs. Delbert Herzberg were in charge of the flowers.  Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery.

CHARLES I. WEHRKAMP

 

            Charles I. Wehrkamp, 71, of Clarinda died Wednesday, October 8, 1997, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center where he had been a patient for a day.  Charles was born Jan. 11, 1926, in Clarinda, Iowa, son of Albert and Leila Shum Wehrkamp.  He was married to Lorena Maxwell on July 7, 1957.  They made there home in Essex.  After her death he made his home with his mother in Clarinda.  Charles had worked for Henry Fields Nursery in Shenandoah.

            Survivors include his mother, Lelia, a resident at the Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda, brother Glen P. Wehrkamp, Hartley, Iowa, two sisters, Jane Wehrkamp, Iowa City, Iowa, Neola Wehrkamp of Shenandoah and nieces and nephews.

            Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, 1997, at 10 a.m. a the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda.  Burial will be in the Shearer Cemetery near Braddyville, Iowa.  An open visitation will be held at the funeral home.

 

 

 

 

Pat, no obituary, but Clarice did have a funeral folder on Harry's sister, a daughter of Glen Shum.  Bertha was born in Page County, died and buried in Oregon.

Peter Shum, Jr.  Obituary
 Peter Shum, Jr., well known as a farmer near Clarinda, and recently for several years a liveryman in this city, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 1912.  He was in poor health for a considerable time before his death.  Among his ailments was asthma.  His funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. William Stevenson, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church and interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery. The following obituary was read at the funeral of Mr. Shum:
 "Peter Shum Jr., son of Peter and Elizabeth Shum, was born in Vermont, Dec. 9, 1853, and came to Lee county, Ia., when a boy.  At about 21 years of age he came with his parents to Page county, settling on a farm in Valley township.  March 7, 1875 was married to Mary A. McMichael, daughter of S. F. and Louis McMichael, and began housekeeping on his farm near his father's.  To this union four children were born, one dying infancy.  Mrs. Nora Turner of Clarinda, Mrs. Myrtle Moore of Oskaloosa, Ia., and Wesley, of Clarinda, are present today.  For a number of years they enjoyed this home, when his wife, Feb. 3, 1884, was taken, leaving four small motherless children.  The house was broken up and the children were taken care of by their grandparents.  In 1886 he was married to Mary Houston, and again established the home on his farm.  o this union five daughters were born, Nellie, dying infancy.  Mrs. Ora Turner, Mrs. Georgia Neely, Mrs. Jessie Tinker, and Hazel are present today.  In 1891 he moved to a farm near Villisca, residing there several years.  About 1904 he sold his farm, coming to Clarinda, purchasing a livery barn, and engaged in this business until obliged to give it up on account of his health.  He was the second son of a family of sixteen, his parents and five brothers and two sisters, having passed on before.  He leaves behind seven brothers, one sister, seven children, two step children, eight grandchildren, and a companion that faithfully ministered to every want during his long illness with untiring devotion.  He suffered long and intensely, and fought bravely for his life, but such was not to be, and on Sabbath day at 9:30 he passed away to meet a just God that deals justice to all."  In this connection is the following:  "The family desire to thank the friends for their many kindnesses to them during their severe trial and bereavement."

 

 According to the Page County Court House records researched by Clarice Shum, Mary A. Shum died at age 26 at 5 p.m. on February 3, 1884.   She suffered "congestion of stomach", the duration of which was "6 days."

 

 

Mary was 83 when she died in Wyoming.  The death was recorded in the Clarinda Herald Journal 7 October 1946.

 

Mary Shum obituary
 Mrs. Mary Shum was born in 1864, on July 26th, at Pleasant Grove, Iowa.  She was the daughter of Ezekiel and Martha Ann True, the fifth of eight children.
 As a child, she moved to Nebraska with her parents, where they homesteaded their land.
 As a young woman, she returned to Iowa and in 1881 she was united in marriage to Abraham Houston at Burlington, Iowa.  Into their home were born two children, S. C. Houston of Longview, Wash. and Ross A., now deceased.  The family shortly suffered the loss of their husband and father.
 In 1886 she and Peter Shum were united in marriage.  Into their home were born five children:  Nellie, now deceased; Mrs. Charles Hutchings, Clarinda; Mrs. C. C. Neeley, Boone, Iowa; Mrs. Charles Tinker, Sheridan, Wyo; and Mrs. Ralph Waterman, Webster Groves, Mo.
 Also surviving are two step-children:  S. W. Shum of Clarinda and Mrs. Myrtle Moore of Des Moines.
 Mr. Shum preceded her in passing and died in October, 1912.
 Mrs. Mary Shum left this earthly pilgrimage in this year of our Lord, 1946, on October 5th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Tinker, Sheridan, Wyo.  She was a member of the Christian church.
 Memorial services were held at the Walker Funeral home on October 9th and conducted by the Rev. Richard Dieken, in the absence of a local Christian church minister.  Burial was in the Rose Hill cemetery.
 Present from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. C C Tinker from Sheridan, Wyo, Mrs Lewis Glenn from Washington, D C, also Mrs Laura Sams and Will and Roy Thomas from Danville, Iowa.

    Wm. Neil Turner was born in Centralia, Kans. Sept. 26th, 1887 and passed on to his reward Nov. 20th, 1918 at Ottumwa, Ia. aged 31 year, 1 month and 24 days.
     In 1909 he was united in marriage to Miss Ora Shum to which union was born 2 children, Phillis Jean, age 3 year, and James Franklin, age 7 months.   Besides the children, he leaves to mourn his loss, his devoted wife, father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Turner, Moline, Ia. one sister, Mrs. A. E. Hull, Clarinda, 3 brothers, Harvey and Winifred of Moline, Ia. and Arthur with the colors somewhere in France.
     Neil confessed his faith in Christ at the early age of 12 years at the Blue Grove Church, Taylor Co., later during the ministry of Brother Eppard, he with his wife united with the Christian church in Clarinda.   This profession of life so early begun he lived not only toward his eternal Father but toward his fellowman.
     Short services were held at the Clarinda Cemetery Saturday morning at 10:30 conducted by Rev. R. C. Snodgrass, pastor of the Christian Church.

     Mrs. Ora Hutchings, 95, died at Cedar Falls, Tuesday morning.  She was a former resident of Clarinda.
    She was born Jan. 3, 1888, in Page County, the daughter of Peter and Mary Jane True Shum.
    She was married to William Neil Turner in 1909.  He died in 1918.  On Dec. 28, 1924 she was married to Charles Hutchings who died in 1970.
    Survivors include a daughter Mrs. Lewis (Phyllis) Glenn of Cedar Falls, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Hazel Waterman of Webster Grove, Mo, is a sister.  Mable Hutchings Miller of Sioux City, Ia. is a step-daughter.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son James, three brothers and four sisters.
    Funeral services will be at 2:30 pm Friday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Swedberg officiating.  Burial will be in Clarinda cemetery.

Retired Rural Mail Carrier Died at Hospital Saturday
    Wes Shum, 69, retired mail carrier, died at the Municipal hospital here Saturday evening after being taken from his home at 109 West Garfield street on Friday after a heart attack.
    The funeral services are being planned for Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Walker Funeral Home with the Rev. Lester Greenwood in charge.  Burial will be in the Clarinda cemetery.
    Mr. Shum had retired from his postal work eight years ago, but continued to assist his son, Max Shum, at the plumbing shop.  He is survived by his wife, son and two daughters, Mrs. Ted (Lorraine) Jackson of Chicago and Mrs. Charles (La Vaughn) Sorenson of Chicago.  Mr and Mrs Jackson and daughter, Judy, have come and brought Marjorie Sorenson with them.  Mr and Mrs Sorenson are in Florida, where Mr. Sorenson has recently been hospitalized, and they will be unable to come at this time.
    Mrs. Myrtle Moore of Des Moines is a sister of Mr. Shum and he is survived by four half-sisters: Mrs Charles Hutchings of Clarinda, Mrs. Georgia Neeley of Boone, Mrs. Jessie Tinker of Sheridan, Wyo, Mrs. Hazel Waterman of Webster Grove, Mo.

 

MAX SHUM FUNERAL HELD
    Max W. Shum, 77, of Clarinda, died Friday night at Veterans Hospital in Omaha where he had been for the past three weeks.
    He was born Feb. 28, 1907, at Clarinda, the son of Wesley and Dilla Penwell Shum.
    Mr. Shum had been in the plumbing and heating business.
    He was a veteran of W.W.II.
    Survivors include his wife Coral Mohler Shum and one sister Mrs. Lorraine Jackson, of Chesterton, In.
    He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, LaVaughn Sorenson.
    Graveside services were held this Monday morning at Clarinda Cemetery with Rev. Martin Miller officiating.
    Walker-Merrick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements

Marriage record of George Shum and Della Shipley, Taylor County, Iowa, book 14, page 516.  Full name of groom listed as George Shum of Gravity, Iowa.  His occupation was farming.  He was 68 years old, white, this was his second marriage and he listed his place of birth as Canada.  He gave the name of his parents as Betsy Phenor and Peter Shum.  Della's maiden name was listed as Johnson, her full name at the time of the marriage was Della Shipley, residence Mesphalia, Kansas. Age 60.  They were married at Gravity, Iowa on 21 May, 1923; witnesses were George Johnson and Fred Trost.  The minister was H. M. Williamson. 

 

OBITUARY OF GEORGE SHUM, GRAVITY, IOWA
 Geo. Shum was born September 11, 1855 and died at his home in Gravity, January 12, 1941, at the age of 85 years, 4 mos and 1 day after being confined to his home for several months.
He was united in marriage to Ada M. Bickford February 3rd, 1878. To this union were born nine children. Bert, Alonza and Paul preceded their parents in death. His wife passed away in 1922. On May 21, 1923 he was united in marriage to Della Shipley.
 Bro Shum spent the most of his life in Taylor county living on a farm for a number of years and returning to Gravity in the year 1916. In the year 1893 Bro. Shum was asked to attend revival services held by the Free Methodist people at the Glasgow school house which he did and was converted uniting with the church that same year and remained a faithful member until his death.
 Left to mourn his passing are his wife and children, Claude of Diagonal; Pete of Bedford; Emma of New Market; John of Hood River, Oregon; Frank of Wessington Springs, South Dakota and Mae of Bingen, Washington; 24 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; one brother, Jim, of Clarinda and his many friends.
 The funeral service was held in the Free Methodist church here Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by the Rev Chas Dickey of Shambaugh, an old friend of the decased. He was assisted by the Rev Biggerstaff, pastor of the church here; and the Rev O.B. Brown pastor of the church at Shambaugh.
 The pallbearers were six of the Johnson boys, all nephews of the deceased, Leroy, Walton, Raymond, Leslie, Jesse and Wesley. Burial was in the Gravity cemetery.

The death certificate of George Shum gives the following information.  He was a married, white male, born 11 September 1855 - in Lee County, Iowa.  He was 83 years, 4 monts, 1 day old when he died.  He was a retired farmer.  His father was Peter Shum, born Canada; his mother Elizabeth Penor, birthplace unknown.  George died 12 January, 1941 in Gravity, Iowa and was buried 14 January, 1941 in Gravity, Iowa.  Floyd Shum of Bedford was the funeral director.   George died of Influenzal Pneumona and heart failure.  Attending physician wasG. W. Rinel of Bedford.

 

 

The marriage record for Claud and Alta:  Book 10, page 297, Taylor County, Iowa.  Claud V. Shum was 24 years old, Miss Alta J. Frost was 18.  They were married 24 December, 1904, in Dallas Township, Taylor County, Iowa.  The minister was T. B. Webb. 

 

Obituary for Claude appeared in the paper 28 December 1944.

CLAUDE SHUM  1880-1944
 Claude Victor Shum, son of George and Ada Shum, was born Oct. 13, 1880 in Washington county, Kansas, and died very suddenly at his home near Clearfield Sunday morning, Dec. 24.
 He was married to Lena E. Burright on April 5, 1911 and to them were born two children,one son who died in infancy and  Alice.  Surviving him are his wife and a daughter, Alice, also a daughter, Ada Wilson of Dallesport, Washington, by a former marriage, and one grandson.
 A nephew, Hilding  R. Shum was taken into the home when he was two  years old, loved and cared for as one of their own.  Hilding has just received a medical discharge after two years and 11 months in the service, mostly spent in Hawaii and the South Pacific.
 Also surviving are two sisters and three brothers.  In 1918 the family moved to  South Dakota, residing there until 1937 when they returned to Iowa where they had since resided.
 The funeral services were held at the Walker-Shum Funeral Home Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. G. L. Hufstader.  Burial was in the Gravity cemetery. 

Ada Shum was the first wife of George: 

 

Death record for Ada:  Taylor County, Iowa, Book 4, page 40.  Ada M. Shum, female, white, 63 years, 11 months, 4 days, died 4 Oct. 1922 in Taylor Co.  Cause of death was Ceberal Abcess.  She was married.  Attending physician was L. T. Reed and the undertaker was ? M. Wiley.

 

 

 

Death Record:  Taylor County, Iowa, book 4, page 233:  Lena Ellen Shum died 19 November, 1951.  She was a widowed, white femaile, with birth listed as 30 March 1874 in Oregon, Illinois.  He was a "housewife" who did "housework".  She lived in New Market, Taylor County, Iowa.   Her father was John Burright and her mother Emma Eshbaugh.  Shewas buried in Gravity on 21 November, 1951; Floyd E. Shum of Bedford was the funeral director. Cause of death was "Cerebral hemorrhage.  Cerebral Hemorrhage July 1949.  Cardio Vascular degeneration"  The physician was H. C. Moore of Clearfield, Iowa.  Informant was Alice Link (her daughter).

Birth record of Alice Pauline Shum, book 3, page 181, Taylor County, Iowa:  Born 27 May, 1912, Holt Township, Gravity, Taylor County, Iowa.  Father was Claude V. Shum, 33, a farmer born in Kansas.  Mother's maiden name was Lena Ellen burright, 37, born Illinois.  Dr. L. T. Reed was the assisting physician. 

 

Marriage Record of Ersal A. Link and Alice P. Shum, Taylor County, Iowa book 18, page 141:   Marriage date 23 June, 1951.   Ersal Averil Link, 39, a mechanic living in Clearfield, Iowa.  He was listed as a white American, as was Alice.  His parents were William Don Link and Holley Burkl.  He was born in Ringgold County, Iowa.   Alice was 37 (age next birthday), living in Clearfield, Iowa.  Her parents were listed as Claude Victor Shum and Lena Burright.  The physician signing her certificate was Dr. Moore of Clearfield.  He also signed Ersal's. This was the first marriage for both.  Witnesses were Hilding Shum and Charles Lonkiris (spelling??).  

 

 

Obituary of Ada Shum Wilson, 12 December, 1979 (sent by her son, Robert, and his wife, Rose):

 

 Ada Wilson, longtime resident of Mill A and a former cook at the Mill A Schooll, died Tuesday, December 12 at the Hood River Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness.  She was 72.
 Mrs. Wilson was born in Gravity, Iowa, February 3, 1907, the daughter of Claude and Alta Shum.  As an infant she moved to South Dakota with her parents but following her mother's death in 1909, the family moved back to Iowa.
 Ada Shum and Ralph Wilson were married at Maryville, Missouri, December 8, 1932.  They farmed near Gravity, Iowa, until they moved to Bingen, Washington, in 1942.  They worked for the Dickey Farms there and later at Dallesport.
 The Wilsons moved to Mill A in 1950 and Ralph worked for the Broughton Lumber Co.  Ada was the Mill A School cook from 1952 to 1968.  In the summer she cooked for the U.S. Forest Service at Willard and later at Hemlock.
 Mr. Wilson died two years ago.
 Mrs. Wilson is survived by a son Robert and his wife, Rose, of Mill A, a brother Hilding Shum of Creston, Iowa, a sister, Alice Link of Wendell, Minnesota, three grandchildren, Marilyn Pagni of Chicago, Illinois, Russell Wilson of Carson, and Kimberly Wilson of Mill A, and one great-grandson, Michael Kuski of Chicago, Illinois.
 Memorial services were held Sunday morning at the Evergreen Community Presbyterian Church of Mill A, of which she was a charter member.

 

 

 Death record of Peter Hugh Shum in book 5, page 73, Taylor County, Iowa:  Peter ws a male, Caucasian, married and retired from "farming stock and grain" when he died 19 July, 1964.  He was 82 years, 4 months and 28 days old.  He died in the Clarinda Municipal Hospital, Page County, Iowa, where he had been for 5 weeks.  Peter probably was living at the Armstrong Nursing Home in Bedford, Iowa  prior to his hosptialization and death.  His address was listed as 312 Pearl Street, Bedford, Iowa.  Cause of death was "Arteriosclerotic heart disease"; attending physician was John F. Hardin of Bedford.  The informant was Raymond L. Shum (son) of Omaha, Nebraska.  He gave Peter's mother's maiden name as Ada Laws.

 

OBITUARY OF PETE SHUM
 Funeral services for Peter Hugh Shum were led July 21 at State Street Shum-Novenger Funeral Home with Rev. Leonard Wilson officiating. Mr. Shum died July 19, 1964 at Armstrong Nursing Home here. Entombment was at theMausoleum in Bedford.

 

The following obituary was included in the services.
 Peter Hugh Shum was born Feb. 21, 1882 in Washington county, Kansas. He moved to Taylor county, Iowa as a young boy.
  On Dec 26, 1906 he was united in marriage to Pearl Jones Wilcox. Mr. Shum farmed until he retired in 1946 when he and Mrs. Shum moved to their new home at 605 Main, Bedford.
 Mr. and Mrs. Shum had four children: Raymond L. of Omaha, Nebr., Elmer F. (deceased), Wayne E., Kansas City, Mo., and Mary Alice Clark of Maryville, Mo.
 He is survived by his widow, three children, nine grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
 Mr. Shum was a member of the Bedford Methodist Church.

MRS PETE SHUM
 Funeral services for Mrs. Pete (Pearl) Shum, 80, long time Bedford resident, were held Tues., May 13 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home here with Rev. Ollie Odle officiating. Mrs. Shum died May 9, 1969 at Clarinda Municipal Hospital. Interment was in the Mausoleum in Bedford.
 Pearl Jane Shum, daughter of Wesley and Ella Wilcox, was born in Page County, Iowa.
 On December 26, 1906 she was united in marriage to Pete Hugh Shum and to this union four children were born. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Hugh Shum, her parents, two brothers, and two sons, Elmer and Raymond.
 She is survived by her son, Wayne, of Kansas City, Missouri; daughter Mary Alice Clark, Kansas City, Missouri; one sister, Sylvia O'Dell, Fort Smith,Arkansas; nine grandchildren. seven great-grandchildren; several nieces;nephews; other relatives and friends.
 She united with the Methodist Church at an early age and lived most of her married life in the Bedford community. The past few years she was a resident of Pearl Terrace Manor in Bedford. She loved to work in her garden and among her flowers. She was a kind and loving mother, a devoted wife, a wonderful neighbor, a friend of many, and always ready to help those in need as long as her health permitted. She will be sadly missed by those who loved and knew her.

Shum Assists in Criminal Confessing       October 14, 1948
   R. L. (Raymond) Shum of Omaha, son of Mr. & Mrs. Pete Shum of Bedford, was one of three people who had a lot to do with the eventual confession of an Omaha killer, Elvin Keene, who took the life of a student, party-time cab driver & ex-Marine.
   Shum was awakened about 2:30 on a recent Saturday morning when he heard a wrench drop to the pavement in front of his home.  He looked out and saw two men tinkering with his automobile.  Barefooted and in pajamas he rushed out the door shouting.   The men fled.  He gave chase, stopping a half-block south where he found their car door open and filled with loot from a neighborhood car.  He reported the incident to police and stood guard with a gun until they arrived to pick up the boy, who was trying to watch the goings-on from two blocks away.

Elmer Shum Dies in Texas

 

    Elmer Shum, son of Mr. and Mrs. P.H. Shum of Bedford, died at Dallas, Texas, Saturday, February 7 after a short illness.  The body was taken to Omaha, where the funeral services were held the following Tuesday afternoon at the Fitch Mortuary, conducted by Rev. Mr. James of the First Congregational Church.  Burial was in the Hill Crest Memorial Cemetery there.
    Elmer Francis Shum, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Shum, was born near Guss, Taylor county, Iowa, August 26, 1909, being aged 38 years, 6 months and 12 days at the time of his death.
    On June the first, 1935 he was married to Dorothy Berry at the First Central Congregation church in Omaha.  Three lovely little children came to bless their home: James Elmer 7, Joy 3, and Linda 9 months.
    Surviving with his wife and children are his father and mother; two brothers, Raymond Shum of Omaha and Wayne Shum of Kansas City; and one sister Mary Alice Shum of Bedford.
    Elmer was reared to manhood on a farm near Bedford.  He united with the Methodist church at the age of 12 years and after his marriage united by letter with the First Central Congregational Church in Omaha, of which his wife was a member.  He graduated from the Bedford High School with the class of '27, attended Business College in Omaha and four years in the Chicago University.  He was an accountant for the Carpenter Paper Company in Dallas, at the time of his death.  His family will return to Omaha to make their home.
