Parker, Gloria Ann Onsager - Gloria Ann Parker, daughter of Arnold and Josephine Ruth (Olson) Onsager, was born on June 11, 1949 at Decorah, Iowa. She passed away on Monday, November 28, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Red Oak, Iowa following a lengthy and courageous bout with cancer at the age of 56.

She grew up on a farm near Waukon, Iowa until age seven, when the family moved into town. Gloria attended the Waukon Schools and graduated from Waukon High School with the Class of 1968. While in school she lettered in music, sang with the choir, and performed several plays. She was a talented musician and enjoyed playing the accordian, piano, organ and guitar. Following high school Gloria attended Area One Tech for C. N. A. certification. At the age of 21, Gloria moved to Shenandoah and Essex area. She has lived in the area since, with the exception of living in Nebraska City for a few years from 1992 to 1996. Gloria worked at the Shenandoah Medical Center and Elm Heights Care Center as a certified nurses aide. She enjoyed doing latch hook, embroidering and sewing.

Survivors include her daughter, Michelle “Shelly” Ann Campbell of Essex, IA; two grandsons, James Carlson, III and Christopher Michael Carlson of Essex, IA; parents, Arnold and Josephine Onsager of Waukon, IA; two sisters, Elaine Ward and her husband Rob of Decorah, IA and Sharon Miller and her husband Tom of Winfield, IA; two brothers, Ronald Onsager and his wife Tammy of Decorah, IA and Arnie Onsager and his wife Sherry of Waukon, IA; special friends, Evelyn Maher of Shenandoah, IA and Bob Forster of Clarinda, IA; friends, Steve and Mary Hall of Essex, IA, George McCall of Shenandoah, Shawna and Brandon Pickering of Lincoln, NE, Larry Haller of Essex, IA and the girls at Elm Heights Care Center; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 1, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by Rev. Craig Larsen and Rev. Vern Smith. Pease, Robert "Bob" - George Robert Pease, son of Glen Ray and Ruby Viola (Bangs) Pease, was born on September 18, 1924 at Shenandoah, Iowa. “Bob” passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2005 at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha at the age of 81.

Bob grew up on the family farm south of Shenandoah in Locust Grove Township. He attended the Alma Mater School of Locust Grove and graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1942. Following high school he attended Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri, where he was a member of the football team. After a year of college he enlisted as an M. P. (military police) in the U. S. Army during World War II. Following his service to his country, he returned home to farm in Locust Grove Township.

On December 16, 1963, he was united in marriage to Shirley Schnoor in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Bob was a member of the American Legion Post #88 (61 year member), the B. P. O. E. Elks Lodge #1122 (51 year member) and longtime member of the Masonic Temple . Bob enjoyed playing golf, reading, playing cards and socializing with friends.

Preceding Bob in death were his parents; sister, Phyllis (Pease) Williamson; and two infant sons. Survivors include his wife, Shirley of the home; children, Nancy York and her husband Bill of Essex, IA, Marti Gigstad and her husband Bob of Garnett, KS, Robb Pease and his wife Barbara of Castle Rock, CO, Marilyn Gable and her husband Dan of Papillion, NE and Mark Supernaw and his wife Sandra of Farragut, IA; grandchildren, James York and his wife Tara, Christopher and Michael Gigstad, Lisa and Lindsay Pease, Josh Meyer, Amy Brent, Craig Parent, Morgan Tysor, and Jake and Sam Supernaw; other relatives and many friends.

Perdew, William Dale - William Dale Perdew, the son of Walter and Daycl Boswell Perdew, was born at Omaha, Nebraska on July 5, 1942 and passed away at Shenandoah, Iowa on Saturday, September 6, 2003, at the age of 61. Bill was raised in the Pawnee City, Nebraska area and attended school there. At the age of 16 he moved to Shenandoah to work for Mount Arbor Nursery Company, later driving a taxi in Shenandoah before becoming a trucker. Bill was united in marriage to Ethel May on June 16, 1966 at Rockport, Missouri. He was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church in Shenandoah. Bill enjoyed fishing and hunting, and was an outgoing, strong-willed and friendly person. Preceding him in death was his mother. Survivors include his wife, Ethel Perdew of Shenandoah, Ia.; a daughter Debra Engle and husband Todd of Omaha, Ne., a son Todd Perdew and his fiance Brandi Johnson of Farragut, Iowa; two grandchildren, Faith and Jared Engle of Omaha, Ne.; his father Walter Perdew of Beatrice, Ne.; three brothers, Dick Perdew of David City, Nebraska, Joel Perdew of Lincoln, Ne., John Perdew of Adams, Ne.; four sisters, Becky Bixemmann of Bellfair, Washington, Cathy Roschewski of Burchard, Ne., Judy Bausch of Pawnee City, Ne., and Nancy Vogt of Lincoln, Ne.; along with a host of other relatives and friends. Perry, Glendale - Glendale Perry was born April 23, 1919 in Westboro, Missouri to Corda Aaron Perry and Nora Etta Hunsaker. He passed away, July 3, 2005 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 86.

Glen’s childhood was spent in the Blanchard and Westboro areas. Prior to departing for the military, Glen moved with his parents to a farm east of Braddyville. He received his education in the Atchison County Schools. From 1942 - 1945, Glen served with the Army Signal Corps Company. He saw overseas duty in Europe during WWII, including Normandy. He was awarded five Bronze Stars while serving his country.

On December 14, 1947, Glen was united in marriage to Doris Madeline Reed at the Braddyville United Methodist Church in Braddyville, Iowa. The couple resided on a farm at Norwich. Following their residence in Norwich, the couple moved to the Northboro area where they lived until 2003. Their two children, Gilbert and Deborah were raised at their Northboro home. Glen spent his life doing the farming work he loved.

Glen was a longtime member of the Northboro United Methodist Church and also belonged to Farm Bureau. One of his favorite pastimes was to follow the various school and community activities of his children.

Glen is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Claudie, Carl, Edwin, Bobby, Darrell and Don; sisters, Mabel Nelson, Lefa Chapman, Ethel Duncan, Velma Gell and Alice Klute. He is survived by his wife, Doris; brother, Olin and wife Darlene; son and daughter-in-law, Gilbert and Clare Perry of Beaverton, Oregon; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Jim Schoenfelder of Iowa City, Iowa; grandchildren; Ellen Perry of Hillsboro, Oregon, Reed Perry of Bothell, Washington, Megan Perry of Ashland, Oregon, Scott and Jennifer Jensen of White Bear, Minnesota, and Sarah Jensen of Iowa City, Iowa; a host of other relatives and friends.

Phillips, Myrna Jane Slauter - Myrna Jane Phillips, daughter of Alvan Richard Slauter and Wilma (Bartles) Slauter, was born on November 20, 1933 in Shenandoah, Iowa. She passed away on Monday, March 14, 2005 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 71.

Myrna’s early life was spent in Shenandoah where she attended the Shenandoah Community Schools. The family later moved to Farragut, Iowa where Myrna graduated from Farragut High School with the Class of 1951. On July 14, 1952, Myrna was united in marriage to Max Phillips in Nebraska. Following their marriage they resided in rural Farragut, later moving into the town of Farragut. In 1993, they moved to Shenandoah. She had resided at the Garden View Care Center for the last three years. Myrna was a housewife all of her life. She was a faithful mother to her children, who loved to support and attend her children’s and grandchildren school and sports activities. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and took great pride in keeping a nice home for her husband Max.

Preceding Myrna in death were her parents, Alvan Slauter and mother, Wilma Walker and her husband Carl Walker; and an infant son. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Max Phillips of Shenandoah, IA; her four children, Terry Phillips and his wife Jo of rural Coin, IA, Rick Phillips of Fremont, NE, Cherri Spurlock and her husband Jerry of Percival, IA, and Penny Holm and her husband Fred of Shenandoah; two grandsons, Chris Phillips and Josh Spurlock; two granddaughters, Christy Phillips and Jennifer Spurlock; one great granddaughter Tressa Phillips; uncle, Troy Armstrong; numerous cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Pierson, Loraine Sara Schooler - Sara Loraine (Schooler) Pierson, daughter of Martha Elizabeth (Kelly) Schooler and Bion Bruce Schooler, was born on December 14, 1913, in Fairfax, Missouri. She passed away in the late evening of Sunday, February 13, 2005, in her apartment at Parkcrest in Shenandoah at the age of 91. Prior to moving to Parkcrest, she lived on the family farm south of Shenandoah.

Loraine graduated from Fairfax High School and in 1937 received a B. A. degree in music from Tarkio College, Tarkio, Missouri. Following graduation, Loraine taught music for a year at Northboro, Iowa.

On June 14, 1938, Loraine was united in marriage to Eldon L. Pierson in the Methodist Church in Fairfax. They lived briefly in Michigan City, Indiana, Claremont, New Hampshire and Omaha Nebraska, before moving to the family farm south of Shenandoah in 1947. Loraine was very active in the Summit United Methodist Church, south of Shenandoah, while serving as pianist, organist and choir director. In later years she would frequently accompany “sing-alongs” and church services at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah. Her ability to play hymns and popular songs “by ear” on the piano up until a few months before her death was remarkable.

Preceding Loraine in death were her parents; husband, Eldon Pierson; and brothers Dale Schooler and Wayne Schooler. Survivors include her sons, Bion Pierson and his wife Marcia of Ames, IA and Dennis Pierson of Santa Cruz, CA; two grandchildren, Bryce A. Pierson of Chaska, MN and Lia Pierson Bruner of Boston, MA; and two great grandchildren, Meghan Alley Pierson of Chaska, MN and Cullen James Bruner of Boston, MA. She is also survived by her brother, Floyd Schooler and his wife Charlotte and Mrs. Wayne (Jean) Schooler, all of Fairfax, MO; other relatives and a host of friends. Loraine’s cheery disposition and wonderful music talents will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Racine, Dorothy G. Strome - Dorothy G. Racine, daughter of August and Marie (Brown) Strome, was born in Edmonton Alberta Canada on December 5, 1924. She passed away at Shenandoah, Iowa on October 9, 2005 at the age of 80.

Dorothy was raised in Canada receiving her education there. She was united in marriage to James Opal Foster on October 7, 1944 at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. After their marriage they moved to Shenandoah where she would reside the rest of her life. After the death of her husband Jim on December 21, 1997 she was united in marriage to Deane Racine at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah, in 1998. Dorothy was a bookkeeper for many years at the Leacox Drug Store in Shenandoah along with helping people with their taxes. She was active in the American Legion Post 88 Auxiliary, the Emmanuel Lutheran Church and the American Cancer Society Annual Relay for Life Fundraiser. One thing that Dorothy valued was becoming a naturalized citizen of the United States, a precious thing that we sometimes take for granted.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim, three brothers, David, Theodore, Johan. Survivors include her husband Deane of Shenandoah; step-daughter, Malinda Reynolds of Hoods Canal, Washington and three step grandchildren, Steven, Michael, and Adam; along with a host of other family and friends.

Rea, Mabel Irene Lightfoot - Mabel Irene Rea, daughter of Lee and Hattie (Livingston) Lightfoot, was born on October 20, 1912, near farragut, Iowa. She departed this life Wednesday, January 11, 2006, in St. John's Hospital, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of ninety-three years, two months, and twenty-one days.

On December 23, 1934, she was united in marriage to Harold Eugene Rea, and to this union two daughters were born. Preceding Mabel in death were her parents; her husband, Harold, on February 7, 1991; a daughter, Judy Magnusson; two brothers, Elmer and Sherman; and two sisters, Lois and Ruth.

Mabel is survived by her daughter, Linda German and her husband, Max, of Lebanon, Missouri; two grandsons, Greg German and his wife, Susan, of Stockbridge, Georgia, and Gary German and his wife, Susan, of Hallsville, Missouri; four great-grandchildren, Drew, Katelyn, Sam, and Tom; a brother, Vern Lightfoot and his wife, Mary, of Farragut, Iowa; a sister, Marjorie Anderson of Tabor, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Stilley, of Des Moines, Iowa and formerly of Red Oak, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

She was born and raised near Farragut, Iowa, and graduated from Shenandoah High School. After she and Harold were married, they made their home on their farm in the Farragut community, and lovingly raised their daughters. In addition to being a devoted homemaker to her husband and family, Mabel also worked side by side with her husband in the operation of their farm.

Mabel made her profession of faith in Christ early in her life and was a longtime member of the Congregational United Church of Christ. For many years she was very active in her church in Farragut.

She grew a large garden each year and enjoyed doing handwork in her spare time. She also liked to pick out walnuts, play cards, and visit with her family and friends. She was a very kind and generous person who loved her family dearly, and was especially close to her grandsons and great grandchildren.

Mabel was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and her accomplishments and will cherish the wonderful memories she created for her family and friends.

Celebration of Life services were held on Saturday, January 14, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at the Farragut Congregational United Church of Christ. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Claude Westerfield. Organist was Terry Stafford and vocalist was Tom Woodin, who sang "Amazing Grace" and "The Lord's Prayer". Caring for the flowers were Janet Shough and Rita McIntyre. Reitz, Lorna Isabel Johnson - Lorna Isabel Reitz, daughter of William Orval and Maude Estella (Smith) Johnson, was born on November 10, 1914 in Shenandoah, Iowa. She passed away on Friday, November 25,

While in school, her first job was carrying papers. She graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1932. Lorna worked at Candy Land, Sunset Café and McClelland’s 5 and 10 cent store.

On December 22, 1940, Lorna was united in marriage to Herbert Willard Reitz in Rock Port, Missouri. They had one son, Larry Gene, born on February 3, 1944 in Shenandoah. Once Larry was several years old, Lorna went to work for Earl E. May’s Seed & Nursery as a seasonal worker in the mail order department, later working full-time. On December 23, 1983, Lorna received a 25 year watch from Edward May. She retired several years later.

Preceding Lorna in death were her parents; husband, Herbert in 1993; five brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by her son, Larry Reitz and his wife Judy of Independence, MO; two grandchildren, Roland Reitz and his wife Pattie of Warrensburg, MO and Crystal Reitz of Independence, MO; and two great grandchildren, Mackenzie and Meredith Reitz of Warrensburg, MO. Also surviving are two sisters, Elizabeth Tyler of Little Rock, AR and Carol Ingrim and her husband Charles of Shenandoah, IA; along with other relatives and friends.

Charles Jacob Rennack was born October 2, 1908 in Essex, Iowa to Edwin and Minnie (Royer) Rennack. Charlie passed away June 7, 2005 at the Manor of Malvern.

Charlie spent 18 years in Essex and graduated from the Essex High School. He then moved to Shenandoah where he spent the rest of his life. He spent his life farming and raising cattle. He enjoyed the Rodeo, corn chucking and playing pool.

Charlie was called “Cheeseburger Charlie” because he loved cheeseburgers. Charlie was a happy, cheerful person who always had a smile on his face and liked to tease people. He was a good man.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents and three sisters. He is survived by his nephew, Wayne Matthewson and wife Barbara of Papillion, Nebraska as well as great nieces and nephews.

Marie Martha Augusta Richards, daughter of Louie and Mary (Spiegel-Nook) Mattes, was born on March 7, 1915 in rural Fremont County, Iowa southwest of Sidney. She passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2005 at the Shenandoah Medical Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 90.

Marie grew up on the family farm between Sidney and Hamburg, the youngest of nine children. The family attended the Zion Evangelical Church in Hamburg. Marie attended Spring Valley Country School into the 5th grade. The family then moved and she continued her education in Sidney. She was active in 4-H and took a bread baking demonstration to the county fair. Marie graduated from Sidney High School with the class of 1933.

On March 20, 1941, Marie was united in marriage to Clifford Richards at Hamburg. Following their marriage they engaged in farming and in 1948 began feeding cattle. On January 4, 1956, their daughter, Linda Marie was born. Marie was a longtime member of the Farragut United Methodist Church, where she was active in United Methodist Women. She was also active in the Farm Bureau Women. Marie enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, especially reading to them. She was a good cook and liked to bake.

Preceding Marie in death were her parents; husband, Clifford; eight brothers and sisters, Sophia Nook, George Mattes, Albert Nook, Ernest Nook, Paul Mattes, Leta Mattes, Ralph Mattes, and Adolph Mattes. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Rost and her husband James of Farragut, IA; two grandchildren, Christine Marie Rost and Richard James (RJ) Rost; and a sister-in-law, Mary Mattes of Bedford, IA; cousins; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Adah Vee Riggs, 97, formerly of McCook, died August 16, 2005 at Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa.

She was born September 11, 1907 in Bassett, Nebraska to Mark and Vera (Gorball) Howard. She grew up in Gordon, Nebraska, where her family moved soon after her birth.

After graduation from Gordon High School, Adah entered the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, where she majored in education and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega social sorority. She received her degree in the spring of 1930 and married Edwin Harold Riggs in December. They moved to his hometown, Brewster, in the sand hills of Nebraska, where Adah taught a number of subjects in the high school. She always had a very special fondness for her friends and students from Brewster.

When her husband was drafted during World War II, Adah and her children went to live with her parents in Sidney, Nebraska, and, after the War, the family settled in McCook, Nebraska. Adah worked part-time as a bookkeeper for Jewell Wholesale Company before returning to her teaching career in 1955. She taught fifth grade at East Ward, English and Math at McCook Jr. High, and high school typing at McCook Jr. College.

After her retirement from teaching in 1974, Adah was very active in the community. She served as a Lay Reader at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church as well as being active in Altar Guild and St. Anne’s Guild. She worked at the Pantry until she was in her nineties. She was also active in AAUW, Tri-T, Retired Teachers Association, and Eastern Star. She especially enjoyed reading, gardening, sewing and crocheting. She played bridge with several groups as well as pinochle and dominoes.

Adah enjoyed living at Willow Ridge for the last ten years she was in McCook, but in January, 2003 she moved to Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa to be near her daughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister Audrey Thomas.

Survivors include her children and spouses: Ed Riggs and Pat Mackie of Boise, Idaho; Jim and E. Vee Myrberg of Shenandoah, Iowa; and Don and Laurie Riggs of Houston Texas. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and her older brother Don Howard of Ft. Collins, Colorado.

Memorial services will be held at a future date with interment at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery.

Her family suggests memorials in remembrance of Adah to St. Albans Episcopal Church, the McCook Library Foundation or the McCook Education Foundation.

Ryan, Joseph Cornelious - Joseph Cornelious Ryan, son of Con (Cornelious) J. Ryan and Ellen M. (Dempsey) Ryan, was born on December 24, 1915 in Sidney, Iowa. Joe passed away on Friday, December 17, 2004 at the Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 88.

Joe served his country during World War II enlisting in the U. S. Navy, serving from September 13, 1942 until receiving his discharge on January 23, 1946. On September 26, 1959, Joe was united marriage to Marcella C. McGinnis at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah. Joe worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the National Association of Federal Employees, Knights of Columbus, AMVETS, Shenandoah American Legion Post #88 and the Rural Letter Carriers Association.

Preceding Joe in death were his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Thelma and Gilbert Burkhiser. Survivors include his wife, Marcella C. Ryan of the home; two sisters, Ruth Majerus and her husband Bruce of Marion, IA, and Sister Macrina Ryan of Leavenworth, KS; numerous nieces and nephews; two sister-in-laws, Faustina McGinnis and Mildred Hughes, both of Shenandoah, IA; other relatives and many friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, December 20, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. Celebrant for the service was Rev. Donald Bruck. Lector was Tom Burkhiser. Eucharistic Ministers were Isabella Hanzlick, Beth Hughes and Joani McGinnis. Attending the memory register were Anita Bohm and Rita Cox. Caring for flowers were Beth Hughes and Ann Maher. Alice Gail Sawyer, daughter of Ernest G. and Alice Gail (Hall) Pitner, a long-time Shenandoah resident, died Saturday at Garden View Care Center after an extended illness. She was 79.

Alice Gail was born in Shenandoah on April 11, 1925. After moving to Missouri with her family for a brief time, the family returned to Shenandoah where she entered the sixth grade. It was in the sixth grade that she met Tom Sawyer, the man she would eventually marry and spend nearly sixty-one years with. She graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1942.

After graduating Alice Gail worked as a dental assistant for Dr. C.W. Peterson. On April 1, 1944 she married Air Force Sgt. Tom Sawyer at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. To this union were born two sons, Steve and Sam.

When the boys were both in school she returned to work. She became a secretary for the Page County Relief Office until becoming co-owner and bookkeeper for Sears Catalogue Sales Store in Shenandoah. When she and Tom sold the store she worked for Dr. M. Moody. She then worked in several Shenandoah dress shops until she retired in 1999.

Alice Gail was quite active in church activities, the retail community and the Chamber of Commerce. For the couple’s many years of service to their community the city of Shenandoah honored Alice Gail and Tom on their 60th wedding anniversary by designating April 1, 2004 as Tom and Alice Gail Sawyer Day in Shenandoah. They received an honorary plaque from Shenandoah Mayor Greg Connell.

She was the first woman elected to the Board of Directors of the Shenandoah Chamber of Commerce. She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Mentor Study Club, Altrusa, and Shenandoah Woman’s Service Club. She served a term as president of each. She was a Cub Scouts Den Mother, and was very active in the Methodist Church. Alice Gail served twice on the worship committee, once as chairman, twice on the Staff-Parish committee, and the administrative board as well as serving as circle chair of UMW.

Alice Gail enjoyed dancing, crocheting, knitting, reading her Bible, and fellowshiping with her many friends. She particularly enjoyed her bridge clubs.

She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Doris Johnson; brothers Hall, Darrell, Ralph and Monty Pitner; and sister-in-law Delouise Pitner.

She is survived by her husband, Tom; brother-in-law John Sawyer of Tucson, AZ.; sons Steve Sawyer and Marie of Lawrenceville, GA.; Sam Sawyer of Tucson, AZ; grandson Quentin and Betty, and granddaughter Leah Marie both of Montgomery, AL; five step-grandchildren; very special nieces and nephews and spouses Sheila and Bill Shirk of Independence, MO; Sharon and Ronnie Brown of Tarkio, MO; Sheleen and Butch Gaylor of Rockport, MO; Pam Magee of El Tora, CA; Pat and Ed Progreba of Omaha, NE; nephews Greg and Donna Pitner of Bloomington, IN; Gale and Karla Pitner of Lafeyette, IN; Lynn and Terri Johnson of Clarinda, IA; and many more extended family and friends.

Sawyer, Thomas Henry - Thomas Henry (Tom) Sawyer, son of Raymond Harold and Marie (Gass) Sawyer, a lifelong Shenandoah resident, died Friday, March 25 at the Garden View Care Center. He was 80.

Tom was born in Shenandoah on July 30, 1924. He met his lifelong companion, Alice Gail Pitner when both were in the sixth grade at Forest Park School in Shenandoah. Their first date was a Demolay Dance when they were sophomores. He spilled hot cocoa on her dress that night, he remembered years later. They dated again after their Junior Prom and spent lots of summer nights at the weekly dances at the Rose Garden on Wednesdays. By the time school started their senior year they were “going steady”.

Tom taught Alice Gail how to jitterbug. Their courtship was filled with dancing. The couple traveled to Clarinda and Red Oak in Tom’s 1934 two-door Ford. During the summer of ‘42 they even traveled to a dance in Lincoln, Nebraska to dance to the Glenn Miller Band. Of course, the couple always carried a chaperone with them when they drove to dances out of town.

Tom enlisted in the Army Air Force in October 1942. He was called to active duty in February 1943. Tom was assigned to a Combat Photo Squadron and served as a radio operator with a B-24 squadron.

While home on leave from the service he married his high school sweetheart, Alice Gail on April 1, 1944. While on active duty Tom flew 19 photo reconnaissance missions in the South Pacific, some of them quite dangerous. He was discharged from the Air Force at Ft. Collins, Colorado as a Staff Sergeant on January 6, 1946.

He returned to Shenandoah and began a lifelong career as an active Shenandoah businessman. He was owner and operator of Shenandoah Floral for more than 17 years. He worked at several other jobs before becoming co-owner with Alice Gail of the Sears Catalogue Sales Store in Shenandoah. He and Alice Gail served customers across Southwest Iowa from the Sears store until his retirement.

While an active Shenandoah businessman Tom was also active in the Shenandoah Chamber of Commerce. He served on the board of the Greater Shenandoah Historical Museum. Tom also served for 20 years as an active participant in the Senior Core of Retired Executives, SCORE, and organization of retired volunteers that helps folks start and grow their own businesses.

He was to have been honored in April by American Legion Post 88 in Shenandoah for 60 consecutive years as a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his brother John Sawyer, Tucson, Arizona; two sons, Steve Sawyer and wife Marie, Lawrenceville, Georgia and Sam Sawyer of Tucson, Arizona; two grandchildren, grandson, Quentin and wife Betty, and granddaughter Leah Sawyer, both of Montgomery, Alabama; a number of nieces and nephews and distant relatives.

Edith L. Scott, daughter of Milo S. and Etna M. (McDowell) Cooper, was born on January 13, 1918 in Shenandoah, Iowa. She passed away on Monday, December 26, 2005, at the Longview Nursing Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa, at the age of 87.

She grew up in Shenandoah, where she attended the Shenandoah schools, graduating from Shenandoah High School. Edith was united in marriage to Russell O. Scott. They were blessed with one daughter, Twyla Joanne. Edith worked in accounting in Des Moines, Iowa and later in southern California in the banking industry. She retired in 1972. Edith was a Past Matron of the Eastern Star and Past Noble Grand of the Rebkah Lodge.

Edith was preceded in death by her husband Russell, daughter Twyla, sister Betty Mace and brother Donald Cooper.

Survivors include her granddaughter Kelly Kyle of Laverne, California, two great grandchildren, Casandra and Brandon; sisters, Ruth Monk of Shenandoah, Iowa, Mildred Edena of Henderson, Nevada, Lavita Waldron of Council Bluffs, Iowa; brothers, Robert Cooper of Golden Valley, Arizona, Merrill Cooper of Lampe, Missouri, and Kenneth Cooper of Henderson, Nevada; along with other relatives and friends, in Iowa and California.

Graveside services were held Thursday, December 29, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by Rev. Paul Brigham. Sederburg, Frank Allen - Frank Allen Sederburg, son of Frank E. and Beda Olivia (Bengtson) Sederburg and adoptive parents Bert Herbert and Ellen Elsie (Bengtson) McClintock. Frank was born on the family farm north of Essex on May 15, 1916. He passed away on Monday, January 24, 2005 at the Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah.

At the age of only two weeks old, Frank’s mother, Beda, passed away. Beda’s sister, Ellen, and her husband Bert took Frank in to help the family out. He ended up being raised by the McClintock’s. Frank attended country school at Franklin Grove through the eighth grade. He attended one year of high school in Essex and then stayed home to help on the farm when Bert McClintock passed away.

On December 15, 1941, Frank was united in marriage to Helen Frances Stephens in St. Joseph, Missouri. Following their marriage they made their home in rural Essex. Frank worked for a period of time on the railroad in Flagstaff, Arizona. He farmed northeast of Essex for 26 years and also worked during this time for Barney Johnson Cornshelling and Trucking, Warner Sederburg Cornshelling and Trucking, Mount Arbor Nurseries, Imperial Chemical Co., Mace and Hahn Tractor Implement. When he retired from farming in 1972, Frank went to work as a janitor for the Essex Public Schools until 1983. He then worked part-time cleaning the Essex Community Center, Library and Post Office. He didn’t give up cleaning part-time at the Post Office until he was 80 years old. Frank attended the Essex Presbyterian Church and was a former member of the Eagles Club. He enjoyed throwing horse shoes, croquet, playing cards (pitch) and playing ball (baseball, volleyball and football). His favorite hobby was reaping the love the of the earth in growing vegetables in his garden (he sometimes had three different gardens going at one time). Most of all, he loved children.
