Pafford, Arthur "Ted" Theodore - Memorial services for Ted Pafford, 63, of Nodaway, IA were held Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at the Nodaway Community Building, Nodaway, Iowa. Visitation with the family followed the service. Ted passed away at Veterans Administration Hospital, Omaha, Sunday April 12, 2009 at the age of 63.
Arthur Theodore Pafford was born January 7, 1946 at Omaha, Nebraska to Worley Heith Pafford and Anna May (Argenbright) Pafford. He passed away at Veterans Administration Hospital, Omaha, Sunday April 12, 2009 at the age of 63.
Ted Pafford graduated Tech High in Omaha however he was serving in the United States Navy aboard a ship while the graduation ceremony took place. He served in the Navy as a SN E-3 from July 13, 1964 to July 14, 1966. He was discharged from the Navy after he broke his back in a fall aboard the ship. Following this he was married to Kathryn Lynn Jorgensen in Council Bluffs, Iowa June 29, 1968. The couple has two children: Angela and Allen.
Ted was an over the road truck driver for years before becoming a machinist at D&L in Red Oak and later for Interwest and Red Oak Machine. He was always interested in Big Boy Toys tinkering with cars, motorcycles, whatever could be disassembled and later, hopefully, reassembled.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Wanda Young and her husband Larry, and nephew Theodore Lee Pafford.
Ted is survived by his wife, Kathy of Nodaway, Iowa; daughter, Angela Haley and husband Keith of Ackley, Iowa; son, Allen Pafford of Villisca, Iowa; grandchildren Dayton and Jacob Haley and Christopher and Danielle Pafford; brothers, Robert Pafford and wife Karen of Nodaway, Iowa and David Pafford and wife Norma of Omaha, Nebraska; many nieces and nephews.

Palm, Franklin St Clair "Bus" - Graveside services after cremation will be at the Farragut Cemetery, Farragut, Iowa at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 28, 2009 with Rev. Claude Westerfield officiating. There will be Masonic Rites at the cemetery by Nishnabotna Lodge # 153.

Franklin “Bus” St. Clair Palm was born on June 26, 1919 in Farragut, Iowa, the son of Franklin C. and Marguerite F. (McMahon) Palm. Bus entered into eternal rest on Saturday, May 23, 2009 in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Bus was born and raised on the family farm, just outside of Farragut. He attended school and graduated from Farragut High School with the Class of 1936. He continued his education at Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Missouri. On August 19, 1942 Bus was united in marriage to Ruth M. Boyd, the couple was later blessed with two sons.

Bus farmed the family homestead until his retirement. He was a member of the Shenandoah Elks Club, Farragut Masonic Lodge and the Farragut United Methodist Church. He also enjoyed buying and selling antiques, playing cards, socializing, and tending to his garden.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son F.C. Palm and two sisters Mary Clemons and Juanita Howard.

Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife of 66 years Ruth of Shenandoah; son Steve Palm and wife Linda of Council Bluffs; four grandchildren Michelle Borman and husband Brad of Cincinnati, OH, Colin Palm and wife Tammi of Bellevue, NE, F. Stephen Palm and Joel Palm both of Atlanta, GA; seven great-grandchildren; Emily and Carter Butterbaugh, Baxter and Savannah Borman all of Cincinnati, OH, Alexander and Charlotte Palm of Bellevue, NE and Falcon Palm of Atlanta, GA; sister Glee Morrow of Atlantic, IA; a niece, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Parilek, Thais Ann Haley - Thais Ann (Haley) Parilek died at age 93 years, 6 months, and 12 days on February 22, 2007 after a brief illness complicating her Alzheimer’s disease.

Thais, born on August 10, 1913, was the youngest of the seven children of John C. and Jesse (Arthaud) Haley. She graduated from Holbrook High School and then from the University of Nebraska where she had been a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Trained as a math teacher, she taught in a variety of Nebraska schools including country schools near her hometown, Taylor, and Plattsmouth. She married John L. Parilek, a fellow teacher at Taylor, NE, on February 4, 1942 prior to his Army Air Force deployment. She continued to teach during World War II after following her husband to Florida and Mississippi. Although she never taught regularly after the arrival of her three children, she was a lifelong advocate of the power of education. Reading and spending time with her family were two of her favorite activities.

Preceding Thais in death were her son, John R.; her husband, John L.; and all her siblings. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Roberts with husband, Richard of Waukegan, IL; and Janet Bumgarner with husband, Don of Shenandoah, IA; five grandchildren, Bryan Roberts with wife, Lisa, and son, Jackson of Chicago, IL, Jennifer Roberts of Chicago, IL, Sean Roberts of Chicago, IL, BJ Bumgarner of Omaha, NE, and Jessica A. Bumgarner of Shenandoah, IA. She is also mourned by numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, March 16, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary' Catholic Church in Shenandoah. Celebrant was Rev. Vern Smith. Serving as lector was Richard Haigwood. Organist was Mary Beth Gowing and vocalists were Sue Hanna and Jane Emge. Attending the memory register was Isabella Hanzlick. Usher was Bud Jorgensen. Inurnment will be in the Arapahoe, Nebraska Cemetery at a later date. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah was in charge of the arrangements.

Parker, Garey Duane - Garey Duane Parker passed away at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on February 7th, 2009. Garey was born to Merrill and Opal (McCowen) Parker on August 27th, 1943 in Wichita, Kansas. He graduated from Clarinda High School and attended Clarinda Community College one year before enlisting in the Army. He served during the Viet Nam War and was discharged in 1967. He returned to Clarinda and started working at Wilson Foods. After Wilsons closed he worked at the Clarinda Academy until his health failed. He enjoyed Sunday football, NASCAR, and friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Merrill Dean Parker and Opal Maxine (McCowen) Parker.
He is survived by children Darien, Melissa and Tammy; five grandchildren; his sisters Marilyn and husband Gary Neal of Cedar Falls, IA, Janet and husband Bob Bryson of Clarinda, IA; brothers Jim Parker and wife Pam of New Market, IA, Duane Parker and Barbara of New Market, IA; aunt Verlene McCowen of Portland, OR, cousin Nathan Douthit of Richmond, VA, niece Jamie Woods and husband Matt and their daughter Alyvya, nephews Jimmy Parker and wife Chris and their children Chloe and Emory, Jeremy Beery and his wife Robin and their daughter Piper, Brian Neal and his wife Shari and their children Liam and Griffin, and Brad Neal and his wife Angela.
Funeral services for Garey Parker were held Tuesday at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel with interment at Clarinda Cemetery. Military rites will be given at the cemetery by Sergy Post #98 Clarinda American Legion.. A memorial fund is being established in Garey's name. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel of Clarinda provided arrangements.
Parker, Opal Maxine McCowen - Opal Maxine Parker was born north of Clarinda, Iowa on May 4, 1918, the daughter of Earl and Florence (Moore) McCowen. She attended Jackson country school north of Clarinda and Clarinda High School. She worked at Peirce and Dunn as a seamstress. She married Merrill Parker November 28, 1940. They moved to Wichita, Kansas while Merrill worked at0 Boeing then Merrill joined the Navy during WWII. They moved to California at that time. After Merrill was discharged they moved back to Clarinda where they lived and raised their children. She enjoyed gardening but family and particularly her grandkids where most important.
Opal passed away Monday, April 21, 2008 at Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa.
She is preceded in the death by her parents; husband; brothers: Dale McCowen and Ray McCowen; and sister Thelma Watkins.
She is survived by her children: Garey Parker of Clarinda, Iowa; Marilyn Neal and Husband Gerri of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Jim Parker and wife Pam of New Market, Iowa; Janet Bryson and husband Bob of Clarinda, Iowa; Duane Parker and Barbara of New Market, Iowa; sister-in-law Verlene McCowen of Portland, Organ; seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Graveside Service for Opal Parker, age 89, of Clarinda will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 24 at the Clarinda Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 7 to 8 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel of Clarinda. Burial in the Clarinda Cemetery. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Parman, Mary Jane - Mary Jane Parman, daughter of Harold T. and Sarah Marie (Williams) Parman was born on March 7, 1937, in Shenandoah, Iowa. She passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 30, 2006, at the Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 69.
Her early life was spent in the Shenandoah and Essex, Iowa area. She attended Pleasant View Country School near Shenandoah and later attended school in Essex. Mary Jane was married to Lewis Schaper and to this union was born a daughter, Teri Ann Schaper. She worked at Berning’s Café, the Delmonico Hotel and most recently worked as an In-Home Care Provider. Mary Jane was a Christian. She enjoyed volunteering her time at the Shenandoah West Page Improvement Center. Hobbies of interest for Mary Jane included crafting, working plastic beads, crocheting and knitting. She and her sister, Marilyn, formed M & M Crafting to sell their wares. She also enjoyed listening to country music.
Preceding Mary Jane in death were her parents and husband. Survivors include her daughter, Teri Ann Schaper of Shenandoah; granddaughter, Lisa Hummel and her husband Brian of Shenandoah; brother, Harold Parman of Shenandoah; sisters, Marilyn Parman of Shenandoah and Joyce Dirk and husband Bob of Dickens, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, October 4, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Fred Pearrow. Memorials are being directed to the family. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
Patience, Robert Neal -

Robert Neal Patience, 92, Maryville, Missouri, died Thursday, October 2, 2008, at Lamoni Nursing and Rehab Center in Lamoni, Iowa.

He was born December 12, 1915, in Imogene, Iowa to George and Cora (Wood) Patience and was a 1933 graduate of Shenandoah High School.

Robert married Velma Newberg on August 23, 1937, in Shenandoah, Iowa, and he was employed with Earl May Seed Company. In 1947 they moved to a farm near Conception Junction, Missouri and had a dairy and field crop operation. They moved to Maryville in 1966 and he was employed with Northwest Missouri State University's college farm He was later employed with the Maryville R-II Public School District as maintenance supervisor and steam engineer until his retirement in 1980.

Robert was a member of the Men's Forum, the Pickering Lions Club and Maryville Community of Christ Church, where he held the office of teacher.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Velma, brothers: Floy, Kenneth, Donald and infant brother Gerald and sisters: Dortha Shoemaker and Gladys Patience.

Robert is survived by his daughter Carolyn (Jon) Burchfield, Lamoni, Iowa; son Robert W. (Jean) Patience, Boonville, Missouri; brother Russell Patience, Shenandoah, Iowa; sisters: Hazel Younger, Los Angeles, California; Lois Knowlton, Temple City, California; Evelyn Hird, San Diego, California; five grandchildren: Mark (Nicole) Patience, Greg (Jennifer) Patience, Lisa (Jeff) Burns, Jeffrey (Christine) Burchfield and Kendall Burchfield; and six great-grandchildren: Thomas and Carolyn Burchfield; Kassi and RJ Burns; Nicholas and Matthew Patience.

Visitation will be 6:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday, October 5, 2008, Price Funeral Home, Maryville, Missouri.

Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 6, Community of Christ Church, Maryville.

Pease, Jack Edson - Jack Edson Pease, the son of Marion G. and Opal L. (Snoden) Pease, was born September 12, 1926, in Shenandoah, Iowa, and passed away May 8, 2004, in Shenandoah at the age of 77.
Growing up in the Shenandoah area, Jack graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1943. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. On February 22, 1955, Jack was united in marriage to Wanda Anderson Bedell at St JohnÂ’s Episcopal Church in Shenandoah. This marriage was blessed with two children, Michael and Freda.
Jack spent his entire working career farming. His involvement in agriculture lead him to receive many awards of which one he was proud to receive was for Outstanding Accomplishments in Resource Conservation. He was a member of St JohnÂ’s Episcopal Church and American Legion Post #88 in Shenandoah. Jack and Wanda enjoyed spending winters in Mesa, Arizona and Palm Springs, California, where he would often play golf. Jack enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Preceding Jack in death were his parents, Marion and Opal Pease. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Wanda; son, Michael B. Bedell and wife, Anita, of Houston, Texas; and daughter Freda J. Peery and husband, Jimmie, of Shenandoah; brother, Charles Pease and wife, Lois, of Shenandoah; sisters, Marilyn Hagedorn of Ft. Collins, Colorado and Clotile Pease of Minneapolis, Minnesota; grandchildren, Michael and Steven Bedell, Christie Rock, Tracey Dutcher and Sarah Turner; plus 9 great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Pease, Lois Elouise Martin - Lois Elouise (Martin) Pease was born on March 11, 1924 in Atchison County, Missouri, the daughter of Lester R. and Beulah (Hutton) Martin. Lois entered into eternal peace on Monday, January 18, 2010 at the Shenandoah Medical Center.

Lois was raised in the Fairfax, Missouri area. She attended Daleview School and graduated with the Class of 1942. On February 5, 1944 she was united in marriage to Charles M. Pease in Hiawatha, Kansas. The couple resided in rural Shenandoah until moving into town in 1980.

During her working years Lois was employed by Henry Fields, Mount Arbor, Lakes Nursery, and then enjoyed her role as devoted mother tending to her children. Lois kept active as a volunteer at Garden View Care Center, the Shenandoah Food Pantry, and the American Red Cross. She was a member of the First Christian Church.

Some of her interests included researching genealogy, feeding the birds, and cooking. She thoroughly loved being a grandmother and a great-grandmother. She brought much inspiration to their lives and the lessons that she taught them about life will never be forgotten.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Chester, Lester, Raymond, Donald, Austin, James and Carl Martin.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 65 years Charles; sons Charles Dean Pease and wife Marilee and Curtis Pease and wife Karen all of Shenandoah; grandchildren Darin Pease and wife Jackie, Jason Pease and wife Mindy, Molly Nelson and husband Eric and Brandon Pease and fiancé Brandy Grummert; great-grandchildren Tanner, Taylor, Tucker and Victoria; brother Dean Martin and wife Elizabeth of Fairfax, MO; sister-in-laws Clotile Pease and friend Kathy Bergman, Marilyn Hagedorn, Betty Martin, Mary Martin and Lorena Stevens; many other relatives and dear friends.

Pease, Wanda Lorraine Anderson - Wanda Lorraine (Anderson) Pease was born October 19, 1924 in Clarinda, Iowa, the daughter of Henry Ross and Gladys Irene (Kent) Anderson. She passed away on Wednesday morning, February 20, 2008 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Wanda grew up in the Clarinda and Shenandoah area. On February 22, 1955 she was united in marriage to Jack Pease in Shenandoah. Wanda was a bank teller at City National Bank for many years. She and Jack enjoyed to travel to California and Arizona. Wanda was a member of the BPW, Christian Women’s Club and St. John’s Episcopal Church. She enjoyed reading, playing golf and collecting southwestern art and Indian jewelry.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jack; son, Michael Bedell, Sr.; a granddaughter, Sarah Turner; a brother, Donald Stanley; and two sisters, Darlene Hartstack and Ellen Gibson.

Survivors include her daughter, Freda Joan Peery and her husband Jim of Shenandoah, Iowa, grandchildren, Tracey Dutcher and his wife Soneeta of Des Moines, Iowa, Michael Bedell, Jr. of Memphis, Tennessee, Steven Bedell of Evansville, Indiana, Christie Rock of West Virginia; nine great grandchildren, a sister, Edith Hefflefinger of Perry, Iowa; along with many other relatives and friends.

Pena, Sheryl Jean Moore - Sheryl passed away early Saturday morning at her home. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Sheryl Jean Pena, the daughter of James and Ethel (Carl) Moore, was born on February 14, 1951 at Shenandoah, Iowa and entered into rest on Saturday, September 26, 2009 in Shenandoah,.
Sheryl was raised in the Farragut, Iowa area, attended school there, graduating from Farragut High School in 1969. After graduation she worked for several years for Mount Arbor Nursery Company. She was united in marriage to Oscar Pena at Shenandoah, Iowa in 1975 by Rev. Edith Sterling. After their marriage they moved to Texas where she worked as a gardener at the Baptist Hospital in San Antonio. She moved back to Shenandoah three years ago, passing away at her twin sister Sherry’s home after a year long battle with cancer. Sheryl enjoyed doing puzzle books , buying lottery tickets and spending time with her family and friends..
Survivors include her husband Oscar Pena of San Antonio, Texas; children, Oscar Pena, Jr., of Shenandoah, Iowa, Lucinda Pena of Lincoln, Nebraska, Eric Pena of Lincoln, Nebraska; her twin sister Sherry Slemp of Shenandoah, Iowa, two brothers, Carl Bettis and Harold Bettis of Shenandoah, Iowa,; nine grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren

Perry, Grace Elizabeth Lines - Funeral services for Grace Perry, age 93, of Clarinda, Iowa, who went to be with her heavenly father Saturday, October 10, 2009 at her home in Clarinda, Iowa, will be held Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church, Clarinda, Iowa with Reverend Charles Landon officiating. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa.

Grace Elizabeth (Lines) Perry was born May 26, 1916 in Page County, near Clarinda, Iowa to Russell C. Lines and Hazel E. (Odell) Lines. She grew up in the Clarinda area and graduated from Clarinda High School at the age of 16. She received her normal training degree and taught country school. On December 8, 1935, she was united in marriage to Ronald Perry at her home in East River Township. This union was blessed with three daughters, Ruth Elaine, Joan and Jean.

Grace was a faithful life long member of the First Christian Church. She served as the church organist for many years and also was a Sunday School teacher. Grace was a 4-H leader when her girls were growing up. She was a member of the Korner Keynotes and a neighborhood club. Grace touched so many lives with her music; she will be remembered by many, many students as their piano teacher. She taught piano from the age of sixteen until 2004 when she lost sight in one eye. She was the accompanist for Page County Chorus for many years. Grace was always a willing organist, helping out with many funerals at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home.

Preceding Grace in death were her parents; husband, Ronald Perry (5/26/1985); infant brother, Merrill.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters; Ruth Elaine Holmes and husband Darrell of Clarinda, Iowa, Joan Archer of Clarinda, Iowa, Jean Volkens and husband Jon of Dyersville, Iowa; grandchildren, Pam Herzberg and husband Jon of Clarinda, Iowa, Kirk Holmes and wife Anne of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Dana King and husband Mick of Prairie City, Iowa, Linda Ehlers and husband John of Clarinda, Iowa, Dyanne York and husband Ted of Clarinda, Iowa, Craig Archer and wife Carmen of Red Oak, Iowa, Kristie Bockenstedt and husband Keith of Dyersville, Iowa and Kyle Volkens and wife Bobbi of Dyersville, Iowa; twenty great grandchildren and five great, great grandchildren; brother, Lowell Lines and wife Marcella of Clarinda, Iowa; sister-in-law, Erma Sarneki of West Des Moines, Iowa; good friend, Pauline Miller; other relatives and many friends.


Grace loved music and teaching her students for many years.
She will be missed by her family and many friends
But her love and inspiration will live on through her family.

Perry, Zelia Wyona Mae Mather - Zelia Wyona Mae Perry, daughter of Ebenezer Roman Mather and Alta Mae (Janes) Mather, was born on March 13, 1917, at St. Edward, Nebraska. She passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2006, at the Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 89.
Wyona’s early life was spent in the Nebraska Sand Hills, growing up near St. Edward. The family later moved to Westboro, Missouri, where Wyona graduated from Westboro High School with the Class of 1935. On April 15, 1936, Wyona was united in marriage to Donald W. Perry in Rock Port, Missouri. Following their marriage Donald and Wyona farmed near Blanchard and Farragut, Iowa until 1958. At that time, they moved into Shenandoah. Wyona worked at Kearney’s in Shenandoah, Henry Fields, the Shenandoah Evening Sentinel and for the Iowan Magazine before retiring. Wyona was involved in 4-H with her children. She was also active in the Farragut Band Mothers and the Farragut Social Club. Wyona was a former member of the Farragut Methodist Church before joining the Shenandoah Methodist Church. Wyona enjoyed gardening, traveling, Christmas lights, piano and cooking for her family.
Preceding Wyona in death were her parents; husband, Don in 2001; brother, Paul; sisters, Esther, Alesta and Marian. Survivors include her four children, Ronald Perry, Lola Mae Carlson and her husband Sonny, Richard Perry and his wife Carleen and Garlen Perry and his wife Marlene, all of Shenandoah, IA; sister, Florence Kendrick of Galesburg, IL; thirteen grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 18, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Jack Langley. Special music was "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art". Caring for the flowers was Phyllis Ottman. Attending the memory register was Arlis Baucom. Casket bearers were all of Wyona's grandchildren, Michael Ames, Mark Ames, Mitchell Ames, Phillip Perry, Justin Andersen, Kealy Andersen, Justin Brink, Jamie Brink, Charles Bair, Gary Bair, Teresa Ranous, Jeremy Perry, Angela Perry, Lesley Ehlers, Elizabeth Dickson and Jennifer Brink. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements

 

Peterson, Cheryl Lynne Raymond - Cheryl Lynne Raymond Peterson was born on June 12, 1945 to Leo F. and Harriet G. Raymond of Farragut, Iowa. She enjoyed living on the Raymond farm most of her early years, and attended Farragut Community School. During her school years, she had numerous accomplishments through her participation in band, choir, and basketball, and was selected to participate in the Iowa State Republican Convention as a Junior Delegate.

Upon graduation from high school, she attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines where she majored in General Business. She was a member of the Alpha Iota sorority there and graduated with honors. After graduation, Cheryl came home to Farragut and married her high school sweetheart, James Allen. From this marriage came three beautiful daughters – Lisa, Gina, and Tami. In 1979, Cheryl moved to Houston, Texas with her family. After years of being a home-maker, Cheryl enrolled in nursing school to attain her long-time goal of becoming a nurse. After graduating as a licensed vocational nurse (LVN), she pursued a career in nursing until her retirement in 2002.

Cheryl is preceded in death by her mother Harriet Raymond and her beloved daughter Gina Allen Austin. She is survived by: daughters Lisa Allen O’Meara (Tim), Tamara Allen Glaser (Gene); father Leo Raymond; step-mother Ona Mae Raymond; sister Patricia Kae Raymond Wallin (Don); grandchildren Brandon, Shelby, and Sean O’Meara; Matthew and Joshua Glaser; nieces Kelly D. Wallin and Charissa Wallin Foerschner (Bob); and numerous friends and relatives. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Cheryl to the charity of your choice, especially those related to animal rescue or adoption.

Memorial services were held on Monday, November 26, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Fred Bryson. Special music was performed by Kelly Wallin. Inurnment was in the Farragut Cemetery at Farragut. Memorials are being directed to People for Paws in Cheryl's name. Peterson, Clarence Edwin - The Wolfe Funeral Home of Villisca conducted private funeral services for Clarence E. Peterson on April 7, 2010. Clarence Edwin Peterson was born November 23, 1947, in Clarinda; Iowa, the son of Clarence and Marguerite (Philpott) Peterson. He passed away Sunday morning, April 4, 2010 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
Clarence entered the Air Force in 1966 and served for over four years. He was always very proud of his military service.
He married Evalyn Zigler on October 3, 1969. They had one son, John. One of Clarence’s greatest joys was working in his garden with his flowers and vegetables.
Clarence is preceded in death by his father Clarence Peterson and two brothers: John Duane Peterson and Leo Farlin.
Surviving Clarence is his loving wife of 40 years Evie Peterson ; son John Peterson and wife Stacie of Stanton; grandchildren Paige, Kyle and Tara Peterson all of Stanton; mother Marguerite Smith of Stanton; siblings: Joyce Anson of Brea, California, Claude Peterson of Stanton, Mary DeYeager and husband John of Council Bluffs, George Peterson of Grand Prairie, Texas, Earl Peterson of Seattle, Washington, Bonnie Wilson and husband Lloyd of Brookhaven, Mississippi, Connie Arnold of Jackson, Mississippi, and David Smith and wife Ann of Villisca.

Peterson, Hildegard Ingborg - Hildegard Ingborg Peterson, age 97, of Shenandoah, Iowa passed away Saturday, October 19, 2002 at her daughter’s residence near Farragut, Iowa after a brief illness. Hildegard was born October 22, 1904 in Newman Grove, Nebraska the daughter of Carl and Hilda (Helgeson) Johnson. She was raised in Newman Grove and graduated from High School in 1921. She was baptized and confirmed in the Newman Grove Lutheran Church. She was united in marriage to Lloyd R. Peterson on November 25, 1925 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. To this union were born three children: Betty, Patricia, and Robert. Lloyd and Hildegard farmed near St. Edwards, Nebraska until 1930 when they moved to Shenandoah to make their home. Lloyd was employed by the Iowa Power and Light Company until his retirement in 1966. Hildegard was a homemaker, devoted wife, mother, and daughter. She spent nearly every afternoon visiting her mother. During those daily visits, crocheted doilies, tablecloths, and bedspreads were made, which have provided keepsakes for her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She later made a home for her mother until she passed away. Game and card playing were greatly enjoyed by Hildegard. Grandkids all remember trying to beat Grandma, but Grandma played to win, thus teaching a valuable lesson…always put forth your best effort. She was a member of several card clubs and was also a great “pool shark”. Hildegard was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church for many years.
Hildegard was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Lloyd Peterson on February 29, 1980; 2 brothers: Elmer and Walter Johnson; and 2 sisters: Ruth Newhouse and Esther Peterson.
Survivors include her 2 daughters: Betty Murphy and husband Bob of Waterloo, Iowa; and Patricia Elliott and husband Howard of Farragut, Iowa; son: Robert Peterson and his wife Dawn of Livermore, Colorado; 8 grandchildren: Tim Murphy and wife Kathryn, Elizabeth Murphy, David Elliott, Judith Slater and husband Jim, Jane McDonagh and husband Martin, Dan Elliott, Tim Peterson and wife Jamie, and Christene Peterson; 9 great grandchildren: Patrick and Kelly Murphy; Megan, Lisa, and Tom Slater; Michael and Ian McDonagh; and Savannah and Samantha Peterson; and many other relatives and friends.
“So long, it’s been good to know you”, was a tune she was always humming or singing. This thought, she would leave for everyone she knew.

Peterson, Wayne Howard - Wayne Howard Peterson, son of Joseph R. and Mildred E. (Skalberg) Peterson, was born on June 14, 1920, near Essex, Iowa. He passed away on Friday, December 28, 2007, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center at the age of 87.

Wayne received his early education from Goldenrod Country School near Essex. He worked and lived on the family farm until entering the Army in 1942. During World War II, he served in the European Theater. Upon his return home from the war in 1945, Wayne returned to farming and raising hogs in Montgomery and Page County for the next 60 years.

On December 14, 1949, Wayne was united in marriage to Evelyn Mae Stearns at the Gravity, Iowa, parsonage. Following their marriage, they farmed near Nyman until 1960 when they moved to their present residence north of Coin. Wayne and Evelyn raised three children, Stephen, Kendall and Patricia.

Wayne was baptized and confirmed at the Swedish Mission Covenant Church. He enjoyed farming and improving his land by building terraces with his bulldozer. In 1997 Wayne was awarded the Page County Soil Stewardship award. When he wasn’t outside, he enjoyed reading and looked forward to playing cards with friends and neighbors.

Preceding Wayne in death were his parents, Joe and Mildred Peterson; wife, Evelyn; brother, Wendell Peterson; brother-in-law, Aubrey Berry; and one great grandson.

Survivors include his children, Stephen Peterson and his wife Anna of St. Joseph, MO, Kendall Peterson and his wife Shirley of Coin, IA, and Patricia Vogel and her husband Alan of Coin, IA; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; sister, Leatrice Berry of Blooming Grove, TX; sister-in-law, Millie Peterson of Shenandoah, IA; other relatives and many friends.

Private burial services were held on Monday, December 31, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. from the Polsley Cemetery in rural Lincoln Twp., Coin, Iowa. Words of Comfort were given by Rev. Trevor Skalberg. The Musical Selection for the service was "Amazing Grace". Casket Bearers were Andy Peterson, Joe Peterson, Max Vogel, Trevor Farr, Mitchell Peterson, and Dave Wilmes. Phillips, Max Dewayne - Max Dewayne Phillips, son of Claude and Ruth (Utterback) Phillips, was born on May 30, 1932, in Farragut, Iowa. He passed away on Friday, April 7, 2006, at the Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, at the age of 73.
Max spent most of his life in the Farragut community, where he graduated from Farragut Community High School in 1951. He was stationed with the Air Force from 1952 through 1954 in Sherman, Texas. Upon his discharge he moved back to rural Farragut and eventually into the town of Farragut, where he resided until moving to Shenandoah in 1993.
On July 14, 1952, Max was united in marriage to Myrna (Slauter) Phillips, unto which five children were born, Allen King, Terry, Rick, Cherri and Penny.
A faithful, loving and caring husband and father, Max supported his family in all avenues of life. During his working years he was a substitute mail carrier, worked forFarm Master Gate Company, D & L Manufacturing, and in 1972, started working for Eaton’s Transmission until his retirement in 1997. Following retirement, Max enjoyed the coffee, good company and conversation at the Hy-Vee Deli. He also enjoyed yard work and most of all, taking care of his family.
Preceding Max in death were his wife Myrna Phillips; parents, Claude and Ruth Phillips; brother, Carol Leon; sister, Marilyn Swett; and infant son, Allen King. Survivors include his twin brother, Rex Phillips; sister, Carolyn Uhlman; his four children, Terry Phillips and wife Betty Jo of Shenandoah, Iowa, Rick Phillips of Fremont, Nebraska, Cherri Spurlock and husband Jerry of Percival, Iowa and Penny Holm and husband Fred of Shenandoah, Iowa; two grandsons, Chris Phillips and Josh Spurlock; two granddaughters, Christy Phillips and Jennifer Spurlock; and one great granddaughter, Tressa Phillips; cousins; other relatives and many friends.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at the Farragut Cemetery in Farragut, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Fred Bryson. Phipps, Audrey Lee Colwell - Audrey Lee Phipps, age 85, the daughter of Henry Francis and Della Blanche (Ingram) Colwell was born February 12, 1921, in Shenandoah, Iowa, and passed away May 15, 2006, in Shenandoah.
Growing up in Shenandoah, Audrey was the fifth of nine children. As a member of the Tabernacle Church she was baptized in the Nishnabotna River. At the age of 15 Audrey started working at various jobs through the years. Some were the Shenandoah Nurseries and Spencer’s Sweet Shop.
Audrey had two children, a son Dale Hunter and a daughter, Mary Bruce. In 1973 she was united in marriage to Carrol Phipps. After their retirement they enjoyed traveling in their fifth wheel trailer around the country with their dog, Ginger. They wintered in Arizona and returned to their home in Council Bluffs in the spring. Their summers were enjoyed by camping and fishing in the Southwest Iowa region.
After Carrol’s death in 1985, Audrey returned to Shenandoah to live out her life amongst family and friends. She bought a yellow Mustang, which became her pride and joy. She was a long time member of the Eagle’s Auxiliary and made it her business to keep things lively at the “round table”. She also enjoyed her trips to the casinos in Council Bluffs.
Preceding Audrey in death were her parents; husband; three sisters, Sarah Phipps, Judy Casteel and Ethel Linquist; and two brothers, Bert and Don Colwell.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Linda Hunter of Miami, Florida; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Johnny Fauria of Garnerville, Nevada; sister, and brother-in-law, Arlis and Kenneth Baucom of Shenandoah; brothers and sisters-in-law, Marion and Dorothy Colwell of Imogene, Iowa, and Silas and Penny Colwell of Clarinda, Iowa. Also surviving are five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; plus many nieces, nephews and friends.

Pierce, Rex Dean - Rex Dean Pierce was born on January 30, 1932, in Thurman, Iowa, the son of John Pierce and Hilda (Hammers) Pierce. He entered into rest on April 19, 2009, at his home in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Rex was born and raised near Thurman, Iowa and graduated from Thurman High School in May of 1949. On September 2, 1950, he married Donna Pulsifer in Shenandoah where they lived for the 58 years of their marriage. To this union three daughters were born, Cindi, Linda and Kelli.
Rex was the owner of Rex’s TV and Appliance for many years, farmed near Farragut, and in later years, was a realtor, most recently for Stan Orton Realty. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved sports of all kinds, especially the Chicago Cubs. He served on the Shenandoah Community School Board and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; daughters, Cindi Dodd and husband Steve of Fremont, NE, Linda Whitehill and husband Al, and Kelli Nesmith, all of Omaha, NE; three granddaughters, Stephanie Dodd of New York City, NY, Shelby Dodd and Allison Whitehill of Omaha, NE; brother, Code Pierce and wife Wava of Sidney, IA; sisters-in-law, Colleen Pierce of Malvern, IA and Sandra Kuntzweiler of Fayetteville, AR; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends. Clytha Muriel Pollert was born October 1, 1910 near Clarinda, Iowa, the daughter of J. Bishop Edmonds and Alice M. (Rawlings) Edmonds. She lived her entire life in the Clarinda area. Clytha was united in marriage in 1932 to Ray Pollert. This union was blessed with one daughter, Sandra Kay.
Clytha was an active member of the United Methodist Church, Clarinda, Iowa and she kept busy with church activities until her health prevented her from doing so. Clytha was known to be a good cook. She prepared many meals for her husband’s hired help. She was very generous and enjoyed taking food and visiting with friends. Clytha also enjoyed crocheting. Her family was very important to her and she was the caretaker of Ray and Sandra Kay.

Clytha is survived by her daughter, Sandra Kay Pollert of Shenandoah, Iowa; brother-in-law, Lee Pollert of Clarksdale, Missouri; nieces, Vicki Lynn Kohler and her husband Max of Caswell Beach, North Carolina, ConaMara Freed and her husband Leslie of Clarinda, Iowa and Elaine Cassady and her husband Don of Fort Dodge, Iowa; nephews, Ron Pollert and wife Carol of Easton, Missouri and Glenn Pollert and his wife Pam of Mound City, Missouri; niece, Connie Ross and husband Paul of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; great nieces and nephews and many friends.

William Eugene Poston was born June 28, 1918, in Corydon, Iowa the son of Eugene Erskine Poston and Martha Kathryn (Ballew) Poston. He grew up in Corydon and graduated from Corydon High School. Bill started college at the University of Arkansas and then enlisted December 1941 in the United States Army and became an Air Observation Pilot flying Piper Cubs with the 974th Battalion in the Western European Campaign during World War II. After a distinguished service, he was honorably discharged in October 1945 as a First Lieutenant. On November 25, 1945, Bill was united in marriage to Eloise Park Hendrix at Idabel, Oklahoma. They moved to Ames, Iowa where Bill graduated from Iowa State University in 1949 with a degree in Forestry. After graduation the family lived in Washington, Oklahoma, and Arkansas before moving back to Corydon, Iowa in 1956, Greenfield, Iowa in 1958, and settling in Clarinda, Iowa in 1966.

Bill worked for Long Bell Lumber Company and also the International Paper Company in Washington, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Back in Iowa he was an industrial arts and biology teacher at Greenfield High School. After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1964, he worked at the Clarinda Mental Health Institute as a painter until retiring in 1968.

Bill was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He had been a member of the American Legion for over 50 years. Bill enjoyed golf when his health permitted. Bill always enjoyed music. He played the baritone in high school and his family will always remember his joy of singing. He sang in several groups, including the Clarinda Community Chorus. His greatest enjoyment was his family.

Left to cherish Bill’s memory are his wife, Eloise Poston of Clarinda, Iowa; son, William Eugene Poston, Jr. and wife Colleen of Madison, Wisconsin; daughter, Mary Louise Benson and husband Byron of Overland Park, Kansas; six grandchildren: Dr. Stephanie Page and husband Evan of Aurora, CO; Melanie Benson of Raleigh, NC; LT2 Bryce Benson and wife Heather of Enid, OK; Lauren Benson, of Overland Park, KS; Kevin Poston and wife Jennifer of Manitowoc, WI; Michael Poston and wife Maria of Duluth, GA; great grandchildren: Joshua Michael Poston, Jonah Timothy Poston, Alexis Eloise Page; brother, T.C. Potter, Francis Ray "Red" - Francis Ray Potter, better known as “Red”, was born December 16, 1923 to Frank and Flossie Orella (Sleep) Potter on a farm in the Siam community. He attended Siam Elementary School and graduated from New Market High School in 1941.
“Red” joined the U.S. Marine Corp in 1943 and spent 26 months in the Pacific. He was discharged in 1946. He was called back in 1950 and spent 14 months in Korea.
He married Florene Lacy on September 10, 1948 and to that union one daughter, Debra Lynn, was born.
“Red” spent several years on the New Market council, serving as mayor. He served 36 years on the Taylor County Conservation Board and 54 years on the New Market Fire & Rescue, and was a 50 year Mason.
They lived in New Market 53 years in the same home before moving to Clarinda in 2001.
His hobbies were camping, fishing, woodworking and lapidary work. He liked traveling and wintering in Arizona.
He worked 23 years at Rose and Tuttle Lumber Yard in New Market and retired in 1989 from Lisle Corp.
Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Darrell. He is survived by wife Florene and daughter Debra and son-in-law Richard Williams, all of Clarinda, Iowa; a brother, Glen and wife of Oklahoma City, OK; nephew Marvin Potter and wife of Murphreesboro, TN, and Kevin Potter and wife of Bedford, IA; many other nieces and nephews.

Powers, Donald Eugene - Donald Eugene Powers, age 69, the son of John and Mamie (White) Powers was born February 16, 1937, in rural Sidney, Iowa, and passed away May 2, 2006, in Clarinda, Iowa.
Growing up in the rural Farragut, Iowa, area Don attended school in Farragut graduating from high school in 1955. In 1983 Don was united in marriage to Irma Kendall at Nebraska City, Nebraska. Don farmed for several years, worked at Shaw Implement for 17 years and Eaton Manufacturing for 6 years retiring in 2000.
Don was often found working in his neatly kept yard, where he tended his flowers and cared for the wild life in the area. Watching baseball was a favorite pass time. He was a gentle, good and kind person always there to help those in need.
Preceding Don in death were his parents; brother, Orville Powers; and sister Sharon Cowden.
Survivors include his wife, Irma Powers of Shenandoah; daughters, Deborah Powers of Maryville, Missouri, Deanna Hurley and her husband, Tom, of Perry, Missouri, and Tammy Schatzberg of Maryville; stepdaughters and their husbands, Diana and Jack Stogdill of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Karen and Jerry Holte of Des Moines, Iowa. Powers, Evelyn May Scott - Evelyn May Powers, the daughter of Clarence E. and Gladys M. (Jenkins) Scott, was born March 12, 1929, at Hamburg, Iowa, and passed away September 12, 2004, in Shenandoah, Iowa.
As a young girl, Evelyn grew up and received her education in the Riverton and Hamburg, Iowa areas. In January 26, 1945, she was united in marriage to George Harvey Powers at Sidney, Iowa, and to this union, Richard, Gloria and Steve were born. Later they moved to Farragut, Iowa, where she continued to live.
Evelyn enjoyed being a homemaker taking care of her home and raising her family. She also enjoyed sewing, reading, and gardening and was known to be a great cook.
Preceding Evelyn in death were her parents; husband, George in 1986; bothers, Merl and Lee Scott and half brother, Everett Scott; sisters, June Mack, Mary Barrett, Mildred Jennings, Fay Mount and Marie Mount.
Survivors include her children, Richard Powers of Pacific Junction, Iowa, Gloria Booher of Shenandoah, and Steve Powers and wife, Glenda, of Shenandoah. Also surviving are her grandchildren Keith Booher, Ronnie, Jason, Tara and Jamie Powers; great granddaughter, Jodi Booher; and a half sister, Helen Means of California.
A celebration of Evelyn’s life was held 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, September 15, 2004, at the Mount Olive Cemetery in Hamburg, Iowa, with Pastor Claude Westerfield officiating. Attending the memory register was Jodi Booher. Serving as honorary bearers were her grandchildren, Keith Booher, Jamie Powers, Jason Powers, Ronnie Powers, Tara Powers, and great granddaughter, Jodi Booher. Final resting place was Mt. Olive Cemetery near Hamburg, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Gardenview Care Center or to the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Evelyn’s memory and left at the Selby Funeral Chapel.

Powers, Irma Rose Hahn - Irma Rose Powers was born August 23, 1929 in Burlington, Colorado, the daughter of George William and Katherine Rose (Wilhelm) Hahn. She passed away on Tuesday evening, April 15, 2008 at Westridge Quality Care & Rehab Center in Clarinda at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 23 days.

Irma attended school through the eighth grade. In 1947, she was united in marriage to Jerome Knisely. This union was blessed with two daughters, Diana and Karen. After the death of Jerome Knisely, Irma was married to Bill Kendall for the next 20 years. Later she was married to Donald Powers.

Irma’s work career entailed 12 years at Kitchen Klatter; owned and operated Kendall’s Café for 18 years and for over 20 years she worked for Lewis Cleaners, retiring in January of 2000. Irma had a sharp mind and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles embroidering and doing crafts. She also enjoyed her yard flowers, bird and squirrel watching.

After entering Westridge Quality Care Center, Irma developed a new love for reading. She also assisted the staff with a variety of responsibilities and Westridge created a personal office space for Irma.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands, Jerome Knisely and Donald Powers.

Survivors include her daughters, Diana Stogdill and her husband Jack of Council Bluffs, Karen Holte and her husband Jerry of Des Moines and South Africa; three grandchildren, Mickey Stogdill and his wife Laurie of Council Bluffs; Michele Stogdill of Omaha, Jill Kraber and her husband Patrick of Castle Rock, CO; four great grandchildren, Jack and Amanda Stogdill, Owen and Olivia Kraber; sister, Lois Bemberger and her husband Keith of Jefferson City, MO, twin sister, Jeanne Smith of Kansas City, MO; a brother, Darold Hahn and his wife Norma Lee of Tecumseh, NE; two step sons, Bill Kendall, II. of Hutchison, KS, Randy Kendall of Manassas, VA; three step daughters, Deborah Powers of Maryville, MO, Deanna Hurley of Perry, MO, Tammy Schatzberg of Maryville, MO; along with many other relatives and friends.

Powers, James "Leo" - Funeral services for James “Leo” Powers, age 87 of Clarinda, Iowa, who died Friday, May 16, 2008 at Westridge Care & Rehab Center, Clarinda, Iowa were held Tuesday, May 20, 2008, 10:30.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Reverend John Clark officiating. A Masonic service was held Monday May 19, evening 6:30 p.m., followed by visitation with the family from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery. James Leo Powers was born March 13, 1921 in Mills County, Iowa, the son of George Powers and Flossie (Biggerstaff) Powers. Leo was one of nine children. He grew up in the Tabor area and graduated from Tabor High School. He also attended Peru State College. Leo served his country during World War II in the United States Army as a radio operator.

On April 13, 1944, Leo was united in marriage to Norma Jenkins at Troy, Kansas. Leo and Norma were blessed with two children, Larry and Connie. They made their home in Tabor and moved to Clarinda when Leo was offered a job doing car body and fender repair for Opitz Motor Company. Later Leo worked for many years for the United States Postal Department as a clerk and mail carrier.

Leo was a member of the First Christian Church in Clarinda for over 50 years. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and American Legion.

Leo enjoyed camping and fishing and especially enjoyed taking the grandchildren along. His family and work were very important to him. He loved to go to Larry’s place to enjoy the scenery and be with the grandchildren. Leo and Norma also enjoyed attending the Clarinda A’s games in the summer.

Leo is survived by his wife Norma of Clarinda, Iowa; son, Larry Powers and wife Sherry of Clarinda; grandchildren, Veronica White and husband Kerry of Des Moines, Iowa, Justin Powers Clarinda, Justine Powers of Clarinda; Warren Harger III of Council Bluffs, Iowa; great granddaughter, Genevieve White of Des Moines, Iowa; sisters, Dorothy Madison of Phoenix, Arizona and Karen Jane Weatherhead and husband Stanley of Tabor, Iowa; nieces, nephews and many friends.

Preceding Leo in death were his parents; daughter, Connie Powers; brothers, Gail Powers and Ray Powers; sisters, Wilma Downing, Thelma Hall, Waunita Egglof, June Madison.

Norma Nadine Powers was born July 16, 1925 in Oakland, Iowa the daughter of Earl Raymond Jenkins and Lela Pearl (Fish) Jenkins. She grew up in Atlantic and was a graduate of Atlantic High School. Norma and James Leo Powers were united in marriage on April 13, 1944 at Troy, Kansas. They were blessed with two children, Connie and Larry. The family moved to Clarinda when Leo was offered a job in the car body and fender repair for Opitz Motor Company. Norma was a cook at the Clarinda High School for twenty five years. After retirement she and Leo continued to live in Clarinda. Leo passed away in May of 2008.

Norma was a member of the First Christian Church in Clarinda for over fifty years, being active in various church activities. She and Leo camped and fished and especially enjoyed taking the grandchildren along. Norma was always willing to help others; putting their needs ahead of her own. She and Leo enjoyed attending Clarinda A’s games and were very supportive of the organization.

Norma is survived by her son, Larry Powers and wife Sherry of Clarinda, Iowa; grandchildren, Veronica White and husband Kerry of Des Moines, Iowa, Justin Powers of Clarinda, Iowa, Justine Powers of Clarinda, Iowa, Warren Harger III of Council Bluffs, Iowa; great granddaughter, Genevieve White of Des Moines, Iowa; sisters, Virginia Thompson and husband Robert of Omaha, Nebraska, Pearl Brown and husband Charlie of Lenox, Iowa, Betty Kunze and husband Ross of Atlantic, Iowa; nieces, nephews and many friends.

Lewis Vandevender Price, son of Mary Lucille Vandevender and Russell Ruby Price, was named for his grandfathers (Lewis Vandevender & L. V. Price) at his birth on Jan. 17, 1939 in Omaha, NE. Raised on the family farm (homesteaded in 1854) he always felt his life’s calling was to be a responsible steward of the land and to pass it on to his sons. This he accomplished as a life’s goal on this earth.
Education for Van began at Vandevender School in the country and he graduated from Clarinda High School in 1958. He attended Northwest Mo. University in Maryville, MO. It was at college that he developed bonds with brothers in the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. During summers of these college years he enjoyed work experiences as a firefighter in the forests of Idaho and as a tour bus driver in Glacier National Park
At college he met and married Janet June Byron on May 26, 1963. After graduation in 1964, he worked for Armour & Co. in St. Joseph, MO. From 1966 to 1969 Van served as an instructor in the U. S. Army’s food inspection school in Chicago. He further utilized his teaching degree from 1969-1975 at Rolling Meadows, Ill. as a science instructor at Carl Sandburg Jr. High.
Wishing to begin a farming career Van and Jan moved to the Clarinda area with their two sons, Todd Byron Price who was born May 27, 1971 and David Van Price born June 10, 1975. After starting his farming endeavors in ’75 he joined Jan in ’77 teaching at Clarinda Community Schools.
In addition to his farming and teaching /coaching activities Van believed it was important to also give of his time to the community. He served at various times on the Canteen Board, Page Co. Extension Council, Page Co. Fair Board, 4-H Foundation Board and had been a 4-H club leader. He also was a member of the Clarinda United Methodist Church.
Van participated in the Relay for Life Walk, being a cancer survivor since his melanoma was first diagnosed in 1994. This cancer reoccurred in 2006 and 2008 and took his life on this earth on July 12, 2009.
In recent years of semi-retirement, Van enjoyed restoration of antique tractors and projects with his bulldozer. His greatest joys, however, were experiences with his grandchildren.
He took great pride in his family, community and heritage. He leaves his wife, Jan, of the home; his sons and families, Todd & Laura Price & Cassidy Rebecca of Glenview IL, David & Jill Price, Dagen Van & Annika Mae of Clarinda; mother, Mary Van Price of Clarinda; sister, Nancy & Marcus Stevens of Ashland, MT; sister-in-law, Kay & Dennis Smith of Chandler, AZ; nieces Cynthia Gratwahl & Susie Notti and nephew Bill Stevens all of MT. His father, Russell, preceeded him in death.
Priest, Juliette Charlotte Swanson - Juliette Charlotte Priest, daughter of Luther Enoch and Frances Johanna (Bengston) Swanson, was born on September 6, 1919, in Page County, Iowa. She passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2007, at Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa, at age 88.

She graduated from Shenandoah High School and attended Drake University for two years where she studied Art and Interior Decorating. On April 7, 1947, she was united in marriage to Lewis W. Priest at Hiawatha, Kansas. Following their marriage they resided in Shenandoah.

She was called Juliette by some, but more knew her as “Kelly”. Two of her favorite expressions were “That’s not my cup of tea” and “Bless their heart”. Kelly adored her grandchildren. She would play ball, games, cards, color and sing songs with them. She loved to go to their ballgames, piano and dance recitals.

Kelly was proud of her Swedish heritage and Methodist background and spoke of them often. She was also an artist and could draw anything! She often made beautiful curtains and could mend anything with the tiniest of stitches. Kelly loved birthdays and always made homemade ice cream and angelfood cake to celebrate. She would bake wonderful cookies and the family still uses her meatloaf recipe today.

Before she had her family she worked in a dress shop and modeled. Later she had her own beauty shop and then after that worked as a receptionist in two other beauty shops. Kelly always had a smile and a helping hand for those who needed one. She was a very hard worker and was known as a perfectionist. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah and a former member of the American Legion Golf Course.

Some of the little things she enjoyed was to have popcorn or a big bowl of ice cream at the end of a long day. Her specialty was vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, and Spanish peanuts. She called it “a happy thought”. Music was so special to her. Often she would sing “White Christmas” and even when her memory was failing her she still could hum along with the music and utter some of the words. Other interests were flowers, golfing, music and art.

These are just some of the memories we have and they will always bring smiles to our faces when we think about this wonderful woman.

Preceding Kelly in death were her parents; four siblings, JoAnn Swanson, Merlin Swanson, Carroll Swanson and Robert (Bob) Swanson. Survivors include her three sons, Gary Priest of Rockford, IL, Dennis Priest of Des Moines, IA, and Patrick Priest of Shenandoah, IA; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sister, Betty Briggs of Shenandoah, IA; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Services were held from Hackett-Livingston Funeral in Shenandoah on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at 1:30p.m. Words of comfort were given by Rev. James Gubser. Musical selections included "Wonderful World", "The Old Rugged Cross", "Moon River", and "White Christmas". Harry and Evelyn Pontious were in charge of the Memory Register. Casket Bearers were Gary Priest, Dennis Priest, Pat Priest, and Mike Briggs. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandaoh. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church or Garden View Care Center.

Puckett, Grace Ellen Ashbaugh - Grace Ellen Puckett, age 97, the daughter of Reuben C. and Mary Ann (Walters) Ashbaugh, was born December 4, 1907, at Bingham, Iowa, and passed away December 31, 2004, in Omaha, Nebraska. Growing up near Shenandoah, Grace attended grade school at Lone Rock Country School and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1925. She then attended State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa for two years before returning to teach for one year at Lone Rock Country School.
On August 21, 1928, in Clarinda, Iowa, Grace was united in marriage to Alvin Puckett and to this union, Shirley and Roger were born. Through the years Grace enjoyed having her family around her and was known for her great family dinners. She liked going on picnics, fishing with Alvin and often got up early in the morning to help Alvin attend his trap line. She also enjoyed crewel stitching and knitting. At Christmas time, Alvin would hook up their one horse sleigh and off they would go to her folks to join the family at Bingham.
Grace was a member of First United Methodist Church in Coin, Iowa, Norwich, Iowa, and later in Shenandoah, where she was an active member of her women’s circle. She was past president of American War Mothers and participated in the Athenaeum Study Club. For several years she was active as a leader in 4-H and often times volunteered at the Shenandoah Hospital gift shop.
Preceding Grace in death were her parents; husband, Alvin in 2001; grandson, Jimmie Flotho; brothers, Ralph and Lester Ashbaugh; and sister, Mildred Ashbaugh.
Survivors include her daughter, Shirley Inzauro of Omaha; son, Roger Puckett of Shenandoah; granddaughter, Tamera G. Joice and husband, Charley, of Ft. Collins, Colorado; three great grandchildren, Lucas and Laura Joice and John Flotho; other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church or to the Bricker Senior Citizens Center.

Karen Louise Pulliam was born August 15, 1949 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the daughter of Vernon Ludington and Mary Lois (Lou) (Laughlin) Ludington. She grew up on a farm near College Springs, Iowa. Karen was a 1967 graduate of South Page High School. She was also a graduate of Iowa Western Community College. On February 10, 1978, Karen and Wesley Pulliam were united in marriage at Clarinda, Iowa. They were blessed with three children, Greg, Lisa and Renee.

Karen was a Certified Nurse Aide and worked for seventeen years at the Clarinda Treatment Complex in Clarinda. She was a member of the St. Clare Catholic Church. Karen enjoyed quilting and working in her flower and vegetable gardens. She also enjoyed taking mini vacations. Her family was very important to her and her greatest enjoyment was spending time with them.

Left to cherish Karen’s memory are her husband, Wesley Pulliam of Clarinda, Iowa; son, Greg Pulliam and wife Amy of Clarinda, Iowa; daughters, Lisa Johnston and husband Kevin of Toronto, Canada and Renee Pulliam of Clarinda, Iowa; granddaughter, Morgan Pulliam of Clarinda, Iowa; mother, Lou Ludington of Clarinda, Iowa; brother, Kenneth Ludington and wife Jan of Hamburg, Iowa; sister, Kathy Holmes of Council Bluffs, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.

Preceding Karen in death was her father, Vernon Ludington.

Putnam, Robert M. - Robert M. Putnam the son of Ralph and Marie Black Putnam, was born in Shenandoah, Iowa on March 27, 1931 and passed away on August 10, 2007 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Robert was raised in Shenandoah and attended school their. After his schooling he worked for Iowa Power and Light in Shenandoah later moving to Council Bluffs where he worked for Schlitz Brewing Company and Bevin & Bevin, driving a truck. He later became a bus driver for Metro Area Transit for over 29 years retiring in 1993. After retiring he and Nora delivered papers for the Omaha World Hearld. Robert was a member of the Teamster Union.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack Putnam. Survivors include his long time companion, Nora Loye of Council Bluffs, IA.; her daughters, Rita Smith of Omaha, NE., Theresa Loye of Danbury, CN., and Marie Loye of Council Bluffs, IA.; and their children, Aaron and Rhea Smith of Omaha, NE., Rickki and Ryan Loye of Council Bluffs, IA.; a sister-in-law Mary Putnam of Shenandoah, IA., a niece Brenda Franks of Essex, IA.; two nephews, Bob Putnam of Wahoo, NE., and Steve Putnam of Essex, IA.; great nieces and nephews; great great nieces and nephews, along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, August 15, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Rick Sleyster. Casket bearers were Craig Smith, Aaron Smith, Adam Putnam, Tony Putnam, Joe Chapman and Ben Putnam. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

SAN LEANDRO - Private services were held here today for Mrs. Nellie E. Parker, 84, who died yesterday in a San Leandro nursing home.

A native of Iowa and resident of San Leandro for over 25 years, Mrs. Parker lived at 1325 Fargo Ave.

She was the mother of William Ballou, San Leandro, and H. Gilbert Ballou, Livermore.  Three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.

She was a member of the Eastern Star of Montrose, Iowa, the Royal Neighbors of Marceline, MO.,  and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen.

Santos-Robinson Mortuary,  160 Estudillo Ave., San Leandro, was in charge of arrangements.  Burial will be in the family plot in Fort Madison, Iowa
