[107] Cahill, David, age 56, of Clarinda,
Iowa, died Monday, January 30, 2006, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center,
Clarinda, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 3, 2006, at
the First United Methodist Church, Clarinda, Iowa with Rev. Walden Paige
officiating. Visitation with the family will be.7-8 p.m., Thursday, February
2, 2006 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial will be
in the Clarinda Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the First United
Methodist Church for updating the sound system. Walker-Merrick Funeral

David Cahill was born at Clarinda, Iowa to Donald E. Cahill and Mary J.
(Pettis) Cahill. David is a 1968 graduate of Clarinda High School. He
worked for twenty one years at Wilson Foods until it closed and then he
had worked at Pella Corporation, the Lied Center, Kawasaki and Hy-Vee.
David was a driver for the Presbyterian Outreach and he and his mother
helped served the Faith, Food and Fellowship on Sunday evenings. He enjoyed
swimming, music and computers. David took good care of his family.
Survivors include his parents, Donald and Mary Cahill of Clarinda, Iowa;
sister, Nancy Wallace and husband Gene of Omaha, Nebraska; sister, Teresa
Lowrance and husband Richard of Belvidere, Illinois; nieces and nephews,
Amy Weaver, Stephanie Millikan and husband Shawn, Richard Lowrance, Jr.,
Mary Lowrance, Robert Lowrance, Cristen Lowrance; grandnieces and grandnephews,

[108] Cambre, Arden Adrian - Arden Adrian Cambre passed away May 12,
2006, in San Angelo, Texas.
Arden was born June 22,1923, in Clarinda, Iowa to August A. and Norene
(Foucher) Cambre. After attending Clarinda High School, he graduated
from Iowa State University in 1944 as a Chemical Engineer and then served
in the U.S. Navy until 1946.
He was united in marriage August 25,1946 at the First United Methodist
Church, Clarinda, to Ina Grace Anderson. They first located in Pennsylvania
but later were transferred to Texas where he completed a 35-year career
in the petrochemical and plastics industry, retiring as Manager, Administrative
Services, for the Port Arthur Plant of Arco Polymers.
He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church where he served
in several congregations and held various positions including teacher,
committee and administrative board member, and served as President of
the Methodist Men's Organization in two congregations.
He was a 25-year veteran of boy and adult Scouting and served on camping
committees, Council Commissioner, and Executive Board. He was a Vigil
member of the Order of the Arrow and received the Silver Beaver and
James E. West Fellow awards. He was a member of the American Society
of Chemical Engineers, American Management Society, the National Defense
Executive Reserve, the American Legion, and a Life Member of the Nodaway
Lodge No. 140, Clarinda, Grand Lodge of Iowa, A. F. & A. M.
He enjoyed traveling and camping and had visited all fifty states plus
several Canadian provinces and territories.
Preceding Arden in death were his parents.
Survivors include his wife Ina Cambre of San Angelo, Texas; son Rev.
Allison Cambre and wife Beth of Houston, Texas; daughter Laura and husband
John Henry of Plano, Texas; son Eugene Cambre and wife Gayle of Mesquite,
Texas; son Lee Cambre and wife Dr. Penni of San Angelo, Texas; and daughter
Patricia and husband Jim McAdams of Fruitvale, Texas. Also eight grandchildren
and one great-grandchild.
Services will be held on June 24, 2006 at the City Cemetery, Nauvoo,
Illinois. |
[109] Card, Cheryl Kay Tippery,
54, Lincoln, died April 28, 2006, from injuries sustained in a car accident
on I-70 in Columbia, Mo.
Cheryl was born Feb. 28, 1952, to Lyle and Helen Tippery in Oakland [Iowa].
She married Kirtland Calvin Card (8/18/73) in Decatur. Into this union
three children were born: Rebecca Sue (10/30/76), Deborah Kay (7/15/78),
and Rachel Anne (2/20/81).
Employed by University of Nebraska for 32 years. Her latest position was
dining service manager of Cather Pound Neihardt Residence Hall and Selleck
Residence Hall. Through the years she has received numerous awards for
her outstanding dedication to her profession and her passion for people.
Some of those include The Sue Tidball Award for Creative Humanity in 1998,
"Certificate of Recognition for Contributions to Students" in
2004 and 2005, numerous service dedication awards for her work at the
university and many certificates from various employees for boss of the
year. She also received the KFOR Employee of the Day award in 2005.
Cheryl was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and was an active
member in Circle at the church. She has been involved in organizations
through her profession including the National Association of Colleges
and University Food Services.
Her greatest joy in life was playing with her five grandchildren. She
loved to chase them around the house and get into things with them. She
also enjoyed people, travel, baking, reading and being outdoors. Most
of all she especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include: husband, Kirtland; daughters, sons-in-law, Rebecca
and Brent Wood, Rachel and Jesse Green, all Lincoln, Deborah and Josh
Hewitt, Firth; grandchildren, Barak and Brynley Wood, Jed and Jay Hewitt,
Faith Green; parents, Lyle and Helen Tippery, Decatur; sisters, brothers-in-law,
Susan and Wayne Hansen, Tekamah, Janelle and John Ray of Herman; brother,
sister-in-law, Larry and Sandy Tippery, Blair; brother-in-law, sister-in-law,
Ken and Liz Card, Clarinda, Iowa; special friends, Marcia and Kenton Baughman,
Milford; numerous nieces and nephew, aunts, uncles, cousins and many special
friends and her enormous UNL family.

[111] Carlson, Dennis, was born August 29, 1946 on a farm
in Villisca, IA and attended elementary and high school there. He passed
away February 1, 2006 in Elkhorn, Nebraska. He was the 4th of 5 children (Bob, Nancy, Ron and Deb) of Wayne and Mildred Carlson.
In high school he was President of the FFA, President of the Student
Council, and active in basketball, football, and track. The Carlson
family enjoyed many fishing trips and vacations to Spicer, MN.
Denny, went to Clarinda Community College where he met Connie the 1st day of English Class. They dated on and off during college and after
two years of Community College he went to Central Missouri State and
Graduated with a teaching degree while Connie went to Concordia College.
The two married in August of 1969 and 6 months later he was drafted
into the Army. Connie and Denny lived in Augusta, Georgia for several
months before Denny was deployed to Posen, Korea for a year. Upon his
return he continued his teaching and coaching career at Odebolt-Arthur
High School, in Odebolt, IA. He taught social studies and physical education
for 9 years as well as various positions coaching wrestling, football,
basketball, and baseball until 1979.
He was the Head Football Coach for 3 years and was named Iowa High School
Football Coach of the Year in 1976 and was also the Athletic Director
at O-A. He finished his Master’s Degree in Administration at Northwest
Missouri State University over two summers while the family lived with
Connie’s parents in Clarinda, IA. In 1979, he joined New York
Life Insurance Company and was an agent for two years. In 1980 he was
named new agent of the year.
Denny went into management in 1981 and the family moved to Sioux City.
In 1995, Denny was transferred to the Omaha, NE office where he was
the Senior Sales Development Manager. During his career he attained
his CLU and ChFC degrees, he was the Life Star Trainer of the Year in
1999 and won the Personal Mentorship Award from the American College
in 2001 in addition to other various degrees and awards. The Omaha office
has recently dedicated the conference training room in honor of Denny.
Connie and Denny were married for 36 ½ years and have 3 daughters. Jeree
Kristi married John Menning and live in Gretna, NE with their 2 sons:
Keegan 3 ½ and Tyas 15 months. Brandi Lynn married Ryan Kluender and
live in Moville, IA with their sons Dallas 2 years and Drew 8 months.
Jama Sue Carlson lives in Omaha, NE. Much of their time as a family
was spent with the girl’s various activities from dance and piano
to basketball and softball. Denny took a very active roll in helping
develop the Siouxland Youth Athletics Organization and all of its softball
programs.
He also drew up original plans for the Riverfront ball complex that
was developed around 1984. He took Jeree to various pitching clinics
and spent much time helping her improve her pitching to a college level
and then he passed all that time and information down to Jama when it
was her turn to begin pitching. He coached both Brandi and Jama’s
Jack Pinney and Long Lines select travel teams.
When they moved to Omaha, he continued coaching Jama’s Sizzle
Teams. With the travel teams, the family developed many close friends
and memories not to mention many van miles. As the girls grew older
Connie and Denny took short trips to see family and friends and they
took the family on vacations down the Niobrara, to Okoboji, and their
newest favorite was Yankton.
In addition to his immediate family, he is also survived by two brothers
and two sisters: Bob Carlson and Judy of Crescent, IA, Ronald Carlson
and wife Evon of Red Oak,IA, Nancy Knudson and husband Lowell of Nixa,
MO and Deborah Johnston and husband Forrest of Hornick, IA; mother-in-law
Vera Wellhausen of Clarinda, IA, sister-in-law Lynette Palmer and husband
Larrie of Shenandoah, IA and brother-in-law Keith Wellhausen and his
wife Dana of Clarinda, IA as well as many nieces and nephews.
Denny was preceded in death by his parents Wayne and Mildred Carlson
and father-in-law Walter Wellhausen.
Denny is probably most remembered for his kindness, compassion, generosity,
coaching abilities, impeccable organization, and of course Christmas
Cookies. Before he left us he made sure that there were no strings left
untied. Please know that Denny was comforted by your many visits, card,
calls, prayers, and e-mails. No words can truly express our gratefulness

[112] Carlson, Edna Harms,
was born May 8, 1916, near Canistota, South Dakota, to Daniel Harms and
Emma (Salomon) Harms. Edna was united in marriage on June 30, 1940 at
St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Yorktown, Iowa to Stanley E. Carlson. Edna's
working career included working at the Kearney Factory, Tip Top Curler
Factory of Clarinda, Iowa and she retired from the Dietary Department
of MHI, Clarinda, Iowa.
Following retirement she raised feeder pigs until she was eighty years
old. Edna enjoyed gardening and canning and selling sweet corn. She was
a great cook. Edna also loved fishing, flower gardening, and playing cards.
She was a devout member of St. John Lutheran Church, Clarinda, Iowa. Edna
was a loving mother and grandmother and a friend to everyone.
Preceding Edna in death were her parents; husband, Stanley E. Carlson
(06/30/2001); brother, Wilbert Harms. Survivors include her children:
Dean Carlson and wife Deana of Bedford, Iowa, Karen Beaver of New Market,
Iowa, Dennis Carlson of Clarinda, Iowa, Rolland Carlson and wife Debra

was born June 18, 1926 at rural
Siam, Iowa to Wilbur and Mabel Ellen (Gant) Carmichael. Doc
passes away February 9, 2007 at St. Joseph Hospital, Omaha,

Roberta, age 77 of Clarinda, IA; formerly of Hamburg, IA passed away on
Saturday, May 14, 2005 at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, NE.
She was born on July 7, 1927 near Hamburg, IA; the daughter of Robert
L. and Imogene (Mansperger) Case, Sr. She lived most of her life in the
area except for 18 years at Braddyville, IA. The past 2 ½ years, she has
resided in the Westridge Care Center in Clarinda, IA due to failing health.
Roberta attended Nishna Productions Workshop in Shenandoah, IA for many
years and enjoyed visiting friends, relatives and playing cards.
Survivors include her brother Robert Case, Jr. and wife Iva of Hamburg,
IA; sisters: Fern Smith of Alta Loma, CA, Maxine Bennett and husband Bill
of Vista, Ca, Wanda Riddington of Beatrice, NE; nieces and nephews other
family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother Bessie Case, sister
Bessie Kingery and brothers-in-laws: Ardith Smith, Al Riddington and Richard
Kingery.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon (May 17) at 2:00 p.m.
at the United Methodist Church in Hamburg, IA with Rev. Sara Malone and

Guy Casteel, Jr. was born August 21, 1925, at Rock
Springs, Wyoming, to
Guy Casteel SR. and Margaret Emeline (Morgan) Casteel.
Guy's family
moved to Clarinda before Guy was two years old. He
served in the United
States Army during World War II receiving a Purple
Heart, the Bronze
Star along with two other medals of accommodation. Guy was united in marriage to Mabel C. Stewart of Clarinda in 1946.
Guy worked for Art Lines Plumbing in Clarinda for eleven years. They moved
to Garden Grove, California in 1959 where he continued in the heating-plumbing
business, retiring after 40 years.
Preceding Guy in death were his parents; brothers, Joe Casteel, Robert
Casteel; sister, Dorothy Casteel Bussboom. Survivors include his wife
Mabel Casteelof Garden Grove, California; daughter, Deanna Casteel Rice;
son, Dennis Casteel; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brother,

73, of Clarinda, Iowa, passed away Friday, October 7, 2005 at his home
in Clarinda, Iowa.

Clyde Calbert Casto, Jr., was born June 18, 1932 in Santa Cruz, California,
to Clyde Calbert Casto, Sr., and Ruth Brown Casto. He was married to Nola
Edith Davis on January 3, 1950 in Sacramento, California. Clyde worked
as a machinist for various canning companies in California for 28 years
until his retirement in November of 1994.
They moved to Clarinda following his retirement. He was a devoted member
of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union
while working. His interests outside of work included driving race cars
in California as well as maintaining an interest as a ham radio operator.
He also enjoyed spending time with his family.
Preceding Clyde in death were his parents.
He is survived by his wife Nola of Clarinda, sons Richard Casto and wife
Donna of Amity, Oregon, and Michael Casto and wife Debbie of Modesto,
California; grandchildren: Heather Barnes and husband Frank of Salem,
Oregon, Kim Casto of San Diego, California, Michelle, Megan and Mandy
Casto, all of Modesto, California; two great-grandchildren: Tayllor and

of Clarinda, Iowa died Sunday, October 16, 2005,at LGH Bryan East, Lincoln,
Nebraska.

Robert L. Caswell was born at Cherokee, Iowa, on March 7, 1923, the son
of Carl C. and Hazel Gates Caswell. He was married to Norma Jean Walker
of Clarinda at the Clarinda First United Methodist Church on June 4, 1944.
He was a 1940 Clarinda High School graduate and received a degree in Aeronautical
Engineering from Iowa State College. He served for five years as an officer
in the United States navy during World War II and the Korean War. He was
Carrier Air Group 2 Intelligence Officer aboard the carrier USS Yorktown
in Task Force 77 in the Korean Theater in 1953-1954.
Robert worked for the Douglas Aircraft Company as a structural designer
at El Segundo, California before returning to Clarinda in 1947 to join
his father and partners P.B and George Woolson in the operation of the
Clarinda Herald-Journal.
From September 1961 to April 1968 he was employed in the Sales Department
of the Lisle Corporation. He was president of the Express publishing Company
and publisher of the Red Oak Express from April 1, 1968, until December
31, 1978. While in Red Oak he founded a web printing corporation and served
as president from March 1970 to the end of 1978.
Returning to Clarinda he was involved in real estate sales. He became
a broker in March 1981 and specialized in sales of newspaper businesses.
On July 1, 1991, he was named executive director of the Clarinda Foundation.
He retired in January 2005.
He was past president of the Clarinda Lions Club, Clarinda Chamber of
Commerce, Clarinda Community Theater and Clarinda Flying Club and was
a past district governor of District 9-C of Lions International. He received
the Iowa Lions Foundation Warren Coleman Honorary Award for distinguished
service in Lionism.
In 1978 he was the third generation of his family to receive the Master
Editor and Publisher Award from the Iowa Press Association and was a director
of the association. He was active in the United Methodist Church and belonged
to the Service Corps of Retired Executives, Phi Gamma Delta, Iowa State
University Alumni Association and American Legion.
An avid flyer, he had a commercial pilot’s license and enjoyed golf
and downhill skiing.
He is survived by three sons, Steven and wife Diane of Lincoln, Nebraska,
John and wife Leslea of Rosemont, Minnesota and Christopher and wife Michele
of Forest City, Iowa; 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

[119] Christensen, Merle R., age 79, of
Clarinda, Iowa passed away Sunday, November 5, 2006, at Clarinda Regional
Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa after a several months illness.
Merle was born August 30, 1927, at Coin, Iowa, the son of Ray and Mary
(Richmond) Christensen. He attended Coin schools. Merle entered the United
States Army September 18, 1946 and was discharge on July 29, 1949.
He was an Air Traffic Service Technician and received a WWII Victory Medal
and Army of Occupation Medal. He served in Okinawa, Japan and China. Merle
married Carolyn Brown on December 10, 1949 and to this union was born
Sheryl Lynn, Sharon Renae and Roger Jay.
On January 17, 1972, Merle married Ila Taylor who passed away on March
25, 1989. Merle married Evelyn "Ruth" Hunter Gray on June 21,
1994 and they have resided in Clarinda since that time. Merle
was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mary Lou Pearson, Dorothy
Grafft; brother, Kennard Christensen; daughter, Sheryl Lynn Cowan.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Clarinda, Iowa; daughter, Sharon Cannon
of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; son, Jay Christensen and wife Kathy of Cedar Rapids,
Iowa; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; step daughter, Denise
Gray and family of Omaha, Nebraska; step son, Danny Gray and family of
Arkansas; several nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Dean Clark was born July 11, 1954, in Red Oak, Iowa, to Leland
Loghry and Katherine Holm. He was adopted by James and Ardith Clark
in 1964. He attended New Market Community School and he received his
GED in 1976. He attended Southwestern Community College, Creston, Iowa
and completed the carpentry and building trades’ course in 1978.
Kenneth spent a number of years doing carpentry work in the Clarinda
area. He drove for several over the road trucking companies but most
recently had managed and then purchased Caprice Theatre in Clarinda.
He was married to Janice Stogdill on September 13, 1975. To this union
were born Andrea Dawn and Aaron Dean.
Preceding Kenneth in death were his grandparents, Holly and Paul Clark,
Goldie and Roy Moore, and Adolph Holm. Survivors include his children,
Andrea Clark and Aaron Clark both of Lincoln, Nebraska; parents, James
and Ardith Clark of New Market, Iowa; birth mother and father; Grandmother,
Dorothy Holm of Red Oak, Iowa; sisters, Tonya Paxton of Preemption,
Illinois; Karen Kranz of Watertown, South Dakota; brothers, Kevin Clark,
Doug Edwards, Dan Rusk, Kevin Newlon; former wife, Janice Clark of Clarinda,
Iowa. Kenneth loved to serve the community of Clarinda and he will be
missed by his family, friends and faithful patrons of the movie theatre.

Monday, May 9, 2005, at the Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Corning

Christopher David Clark was born December 28, 1989, at Mercy
Hospital in Corning, Iowa the loving son of Jim Clark and Annette
(Selders) Clark. Christopher was a life-long Corning resident.
His
disability did not affect his sense of humor and he was always up to
playing ‘tricks’ on who ever was handy! Even though
he couldn’t speak,
he was a great communicator and the more time you spent with him, the
more you knew he was always aware of what was going on around
him! The Corning Community School provided Christopher educational
support first in a special-needs based preschool and then half days
in
grade school. As he got older his health became more fragile and
the
school provided teachers to continue working with Chris in his home.
In February 2004, Christopher had an extended stay at Blank Children’s
Hospital in Des Moines, at which time he expressed a desire to be
baptized. Reverend Ken Rummer from Corning’s First Presbyterian
Church came to Chris’s room to perform the ceremony, which gave
Chris
and his family a great sense of peace.
Christopher enjoyed joining his mom in various activities to advocate
for
families with special needs, attending an event at the State Capital
and
helping with a booth at the Iowa State Fair. He truly enjoyed
visiting
with his family and friends, watching the stock car races on TV and
was
a die-hard Earnhart lover! Next to being a big brother, the biggest
thrill
of his life was helping work on Phil Stamps’ stock car, which
was
sponsored for a season by his family in honor of Chris’s 10th birthday.
He also enjoyed spending time listening to music, watching movies and
hearing stories at home with his friends and family.
Left to cherish Christopher’s memory are his father and mother,
Jim and
Annette Clark and sister Sarah Clark all of Corning; grandparents Daryl
and Connie Selders of Gravity and Larry and Connie Troxel of New
Market; great grandfather Henry Karg of New Market; a special uncle,
Daryn Selders of Gravity; his loving care-giver, Kathy Zadina of
Corning, as well as the numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins who were
part of his life.
Preceding Christopher in death are a brother, David Clark, who was
stillborn; Grandmother Diane Selders; grandparents Frank and Elsie
Clark, and great grandparents Bonnie Karg, Cleo and Orcelia “Toots”
Selders, and Basil and Helen Troxel.
May God grant comfort and strength to those who mourn Christopher’s

101, of Villisca, Iowa, formerly of Clarinda, Iowa, died Thursday, March
30, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Care Center, Villisca, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m., Monday, April 3, 2006, at Walker-Merrick
Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa, with Rev. John Clark officiating. There
will be open visitation at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Clarinda
Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa. A memorial will be established. Walker-Merrick

Golda C. Clark was born January 25, 1905, in Taylor County, Iowa, to Frank
Elmer Cade and Evelyn Alice (Sullivan) Cade. She graduated in 1924 from
Clarinda High School and then received a Normal Training Degree in 1925
and taught in country schools. She was united in marriage June 8, 1926
to Harvey Frey. He preceded her in death August 4, 1954. She later married
Ralph L. Frey and James W. Clark. They have both preceded her in death.
Golda was a member of the First Christian Church, Circle and Christian
Women's Fellowship. She was a member of Rebecca Lodge and was Past Noble
Grand. She enjoyed sewing and quilting.
Preceding Golda in death were her parents; husbands; children, Florence
(Frey) Klein, Walter Frey and Francis Frey. Survivors include six grandchildren;
ten great grandchildren; nine great, great grandchildren; daughter-in-law,
Norma Frey of Clarinda, Iowa. |
[123] Clark, Jay L., 75 of Villisca, Iowa, the son of
Lee H. and Edna (Hammer) Clark was born June 15, 1930, at the farm home
just north of Hawleyville, IA. He died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at his
home in Villisca.
Jay grew up in Page County, Iowa. He graduated from Villisca High School
in 1949. After which he attended Southwest Community College in Clarinda,
until the whole basketball team decided to enlist. Jay served in the
U.S. Air Force as a medic and dental tech, while in Korea.
In 1953 he was united in marriage to Donna Hughes of Shambaugh, IA.
They have one son; Don and two daughters; Debra and Diane. The first
year of marriage they were stationed at Sioux City, IA. They then moved
to the Villisca area in 1954.
Clark Construction was started in 1955, when Jay bought the first backhoe
in the area. This was quite a change because everything was previously
dug by hand. Customers could not believe the digging could be done by
machine so quickly.
Jay enjoyed his farm and timber. Of course his grandchildren were the
most special to him. They always put a smile on his face. Jay was a
member of the United Methodist Church in Villisca.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Lee and Edna (Hammer) Clark,
brother in law Wendell Meyer, father and mother in law; Floyd (Tad)
and Isa Hughes and brother in law Charles Hughes.
Jay is survived by his wife Donna of Villisca, IA, son Don Clark and
wife Alice of Villisca, IA, daughters Debra Franson and husband Greg
of Grant, IA and Diane Burns and husband Chris of Alexandria, VA. Grandchildren;
Kyle and Brian J. Franson, Conar, Shannon and Bragon Burns; two-step
grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren. Sisters; Joyce Meyer of
Clarinda, IA, Birdice Targove of Denver, CO and Barbara Des Jardien
of Clarinda, IA, plus nieces, nephews and many friends.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2006, at
the United Methodist Church in Villisca with Pastor Gordon Scott officiating.
Burial will be in the Villisca Cemetery. Military rites were by the
Villisca American Legion Ker-A-Vor Post 251. Memorials may be directed
to the United Methodist Church or the Heartland Hospice. Wolfe Funeral
Home in Villisca were in charge of arrangements.

[124] Cline, Doris Freeman, age 86,
of Clarinda, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 08, 2006, at the Clarinda
Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa.
Funeral services were held 1:30 p.m., Monday, February 13, 2006 at Walker-Merrick
Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Rev. Walden Paige officiating. There
was open visitation at the funeral home. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.
A memorial will be established. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home was in charge
of arrangements.
Doris Cline was born January 26, 1920, at Clarinda, Iowa, to Orth Freeman
and Alice (Guthrie) Freeman. Doris was a 1937 graduate of Clarinda High
School. She was united in marriage August 13, 1944 at Troy, Kansas, to
Elbert Lee Cline. Doris had worked at MHI in Clarinda and retired in 1945.
She was a member of the First United Methodist, Clarinda, Iowa. Doris
was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She enjoyed reading and she also enjoyed going to garage sales and auctions.
Her collection of crocks numbered over 100. She also enjoyed movies and
a favorite of hers was “Gone With The Wind”.
Preceding Doris in death were her parents; sisters, Madelyn Cahill, Martha
Wolf, brother, Edward Freeman. and infant sister, Hope. Survivors include
her husband, Elbert Cline of Clarinda, Iowa; daughter Sue Ann Higgins
and husband Andy of Boise, Idaho; nieces and nephews. |

Colwell, Silas L. Colwell was born in Council
Bluffs, Iowa, on January 6, 1919, to Henry Francis and Della Blanche
(Inghram) Colwell.
The family moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, when Si was a young boy. He and
his brothers became friends with Clark Lybarger and his family, who
owned the local junk yard. In their spare time, the brothers would help
Clark disassemble cars for scrap. Clark would give the boys the headliners
from the cars which they took home for Blanche to make coats.
As a teenager, Si worked at Mt. Arbor Nursery. Si and his friends, also
known as 'The Wabash Gang', could be found roller skating, dancing or
shooting pool. In 1937, 'The Wabash Gang' joined the National Guards,
Company E. On February 10, 1941, Company E, 168th Infantry, was called
to active duty. PFC Silas L. Colwell served in the Tunisian Theatre
during World War II until 1945. While overseas he spent six weeks M.I.A.
in Africa.
After returning home, Si went to work painting bridges for Bud Turnbull.
After that he painted houses and even spent time as an interior decorator.
In 1972, Si married Penny Coulter in Clarinda, Iowa. They moved
to Springfield, Missouri in approximately 1975, where they managed a
truck stop and dry cleaners. The couple then spent several years managing
motels for Best Western in Missouri, Colorado and Wyoming. They moved
to St. Joseph, Missouri, where they managed storage units until they
retired back home in Clarinda.
When it became medically necessary, Si and Penny moved into Goldenrod
Manor. It was there that Si passed away peacefully on Friday, September
22, 2006.
Si was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Francis and Della Blanche
Colwell; four sisters, Julia Williams, Sarah Phipps, Ethel (Sis) Linquist
and Audrey Phipps; two brothers, Bert and Don Colwell; son, Lance Aldee;
and daughter, Janice Ronai'e.
He is survived by his wife, Penny of Clarinda, IA; son, Martin Colwell
of Shenandoah, IA; daughter, Teresa of Omaha, NE; step-daughter, Pat
Hopper and husband Gary of Clarinda, IA; step-son, Mike Denny of Clarinda;
brother, Marion Colwell and wife Dorothy of Imogene, IA; sister, Arlis
Baucom and husband Kenneth of Shenandoah, IA; his grandchildren; many
nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Graveside memorial services were held on Wednesday, September 27, 2006,
at 10:30 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Chapel at Rose Hill Cemetery.
Words of comfort were given by Pastor Tom Swafford. Attending the memory
register was Phyllis Funk. Honorary bearers were all of Silas' comrades
of Company E - 168th Infantry. Military rites were accorded by the American
Legion Post #88 of Shenandoah. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was

[126] Cooper, Ellen Bell Brown was
born on October 30, 1920 in Clarinda, Iowa the daughter of Elza George
Bell and Lila (McMullin) Bell.
She was raised and attended school in rural Clarinda. On January 15, 1942
she was united in marriage to Birger Brown. The couple made their home
on a farm near Villisca. Ellen worked in a local restaurant for several
years, before receiving a Dietician Certificate from Ames. She then worked
for the Good Samaritan Center in Villisca for 11 years prior to retirement.
Birger passed away in 1970 and in 1981 Ellen was married to Ward Cooper.
They lived in the Morton Mills area. Following Ward's death in 1985 she
made Knoxville her home.
Ellen enjoyed gardening, flowers, needlework and hand quilting.
Ellen was a member of the New Covenant Church in Knoxville.
She passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2005 at the Griffin Nursing Center
at the age of 84 years, 4 months and 10 days.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, 2 infant sons
and her brother, Franklin Bell.
Those left to honor her memory include her son, Norm Brown (Suzanne) of
Knoxville, daughter, Phyllis Donat (Duane) of Aberdeen, South Dakota;
7 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Shepard of Clarinda;
step-daughter, Madelyn Bergren of Gilbert, Arizona; 4 step-grandchildren
and 6 step-great grandchildren and many other family members and friends.
Funeral services were held at New Covenant Church in Knoxville, Iowa on
Monday, March 14, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. with Dr. Craig Bex, officiating.
Interment was in the Villisca Cemetery - Villisca, Iowa on Monday, March
14, 2005 at 3:00 p.m.

[127] Correll, Bonnie Lee Hunt,
entered into rest on May 4, 2006 at Bryan LGH East hospital in Lincoln,
NE after a lengthy illness.
Bonnie Lee Hunt was born on January 3, 1946 in Miami, Florida to Paul
Hunt and Lillian (Cramer) Hunt. She lived at home in Miami until 1967
when she moved out of state to marry. After being married she had 2
sons, one passing shortly after birth in 1968 and the other Milton B.
Chapman was born in July 1971. In June of 1976 Bonnie and Milton moved
to Clarinda, Iowa to live with her parents.
On May 1, 1982 she married Norman Correll at St John Lutheran Church in
Clarinda. She worked off and on as a CNA between 1979 and 1995, but needed
to leave the work world due to some serious health problems. She spent
her time doing several types of volunteer work in Clarinda. She worked
with the
TOPS organization in the 70's and 80's.
Also did some volunteering with the Clarinda A's baseball team, which
she loved doing very much. As of recent years she did a lot of work with
RSVP and you could find her working at Faith Food and Fellowship every
Sunday afternoon. Family, Friends, and volunteer work were the top 3 priorities
in her life. Bonnie enjoyed hand work and made 4 baby blankets while she
was in the hospital. She will be deeply loved forever and sorely missed.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, her mother - Lillian Cramer
Hunt, and first child.
She is survived by her father Paul Hunt, husband Norman Correll and son
Milton Correll, all of Clarinda.
A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m., Sunday, May 14 at the First
United Methodist Church, Clarinda, Iowa with Rev. Walden Paige officiating.
A reception will follow at The Cardinal Canteen which is located at 215

and died Friday, February 17, 2006.
Lilly is survived by her parents, Melody and Jay Cregeen of Escondido;
sister Isabella Cregeen of Escondido; grandparents Art Baeza of Fallbrook,
Laura Howell of Santee, Mort and Donna Cregeen of Escondido; and great-grandparents
Miguel Baeza and Marie and Jeff Hofland, all of Escondido, and Willard
and Charlene Baird of Broadview, Montana.
Mort Cregeen is a 1955 graduate of Coin High School.
Inurnment was Friday, February 24 at Oak Hill memorial park in Escondido.

[129] Creveling, Sidney (Sid), age 90, of Clarinda, Iowa,
died Thursday, December 15, 2005, at Westridge Quality Care & Rehab
Center, Clarinda, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 19, 2005
at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. John Clark officiating. Visitation
with the family was held 7-8 p.m., Sunday, December 18, 2005 at the
funeral home. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery. Memorials may be
directed to the American Heart Association or to the American Cancer

Sidney Lee Creveling, Jr. was born July 1, 1915, on a farm near Sharpsburg,
Iowa, to Sidney Lee Creveling, Sr. and Ethel May (Brunnick) Creveling.
Sid’s family moved to Clarinda, Iowa when he was in his early
teens.
He was united in marriage to Marjorie May Miller September 19, 1943
in Clarinda, Iowa. Sid farmed for almost 60 years and loved farming
his whole life. He and Marj lived over 50 years on their current farm
south of Clarinda.
He was an active member of the First Christian Church, serving as a
deacon for many years. Sid and Marj square danced for 15 years. One
of Sid’s greatest enjoyments was his family.
Preceding Sid in death were his parents; brothers, Alex Creveling and
Arthur (Boots) Creveling and sisters, Claire Cunningham and Berniece
Brown. Survivors include his wife Marjorie Creveling of Clarinda, Iowa;
son, Russell (Rusty) Creveling and wife Janis of Manchester, Iowa; grandchildren,
Ronda Graybill and husband Kevin, Brian Creveling, Holly Lynn Creveling;
great grandchildren, Danielle Graybill, Kaitlyn Graybill, Jared Graybill,
Elizabeth Creveling; sister, Ada Stapleton of Omaha, Nebraska; brother-in-law,
Merrill Miller and wife Angie of Clarinda, Iowa.

Iowa, formerly of Shenandoah, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 07, 2006, at
Westridge Quality Care & Rehab, Clarinda, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Friday, February 10, 2006 at
Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Rev. Karen Bash officiating.

Ola Custer was born June 25, 1906, at West Plains, Missouri, to.James
T. Campbell and Lucinda Ann (Coffee) Campbell. She was united in marriage
on February 23, 1925 to John Ziehe and on September 27, 1964 to Herman
Edward Custer. Ola was a member of the First Christian Church, Shenandoah,
Iowa. She was a very good cook and she also enjoyed crocheting.
Ola was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; son, Jerry Ziehe;
grandson, Michael Ziehe; great grandson, John Ziehe; two brothers and
four sisters.
Survivors include her son, John Ziehe and wife Arlene of Hayward, California;
daughter, Betty Werts of Clarinda, Iowa; daughter, Catherine Slevin of
Kansas City, Missouri; fifteen grandchildren; twenty five great grandchildren;
fifteen great, great grandchildren. |
[131] Cutter, Tom R. - Masonic graveside services will be held for Tom R. Cutter, 79, who died early Monday morning at the Pyle Memorial Hospital, Payson, Az, following a heart attack.
Services will be held at Snowhill cemetery, one mile north of Coin, at 2 pm July 6. Tri-Centum Lodge 300 A.F. & A.M., Shenandoah, of which Mr Cutter was a 50-year member will conduct the Masonic Service.
The body will arrive at the Hackett Funeral Home Friday afternoon. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 pm Sunday evening.

[132] Coate, Morris - Funeral services for Morris Coate, 76 of Shenandoah, were on Saturday, Oct 28 at the First Presbyterian church in Essex. Burial was in Walnut Cemetery. A memorial is being established.
Coate was born at Elliott, and moved to the Essex area at age 7. He graduated from Essex High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corp in the South Pacific during World War II.
He returned to Essex after his discharge and continued to farm until his retirement in 1992.
He married Edna Griffin March 12, 1950 at the First Presbyterian Church in Red Oak.
Coate was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Essex, where he had served as an Elder and Trustee. He was also a member of the American Legion Post in Essex.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton and Maude (Wilson) Green, and his adoptive parents, Charles and Margaret Coate; and half sister, Anna.
Survivors include his wife, Edna, Clarinda; children: Virgil and Pat Coate, Emerson; Linda nd Gene Lloyd, Shenandoah; Barbara and Dan Dammann, Clarinda; Martha and Kevin Tiemeyer, Shenandoah; five grandchildren.
Also surviving are sister, Martha Burns, Osceola, Mo; brothers, W. Fay Green, Council Bluffs; Ray Green, Palm Desert, Ca; Andy Mouw, Okoboji; other relatives and friends.
Coate died Wednesday, Oct 25, 1995 at Mercy Care Center, Omaha, Ne., after several months of declining health.
