Smith, Arella Onda Garten - Arella (Smith) Wilson, age 88, of Grinnell, Iowa, formerly of New Market, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 05, 2003 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center, Grinnell, Iowa. Funeral services were held 10:30 am Saturday, March 8, 2003, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Loren Daly and Rev Dan Wiebesiek officiating. Visitation with the family was 7-8 pm, Friday, March 7, 2003 at the funeral home. Burial was in Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Methodist Church, New Market, Iowa.
Arella Onda Smith Wilson was born September 28th, 1914, near Sheridan, Missouri, to Paul and Flora (Godsey) Garten. She went home to her Savior on March 5th, 2003 in Grinnell, Iowa. She grew up in rural Missouri and worked on her parent's farm, learned to help her neighbors, and was involved in her local church. On October 25th, 1933, she married Fred Virgil Smith and moved to New Market, Iowa where they lived together for almost 45 years. During their union they enjoyed 2 children, 2 nieces and many other relatives and friends. She joined the New Market Methodist Church in June of 1946 where she was a member throughout her life. On February 1st, 1987, she married Charles Wilson a longtime friend of the family.
Arella was a very caring and loving person. She always opened her house to others, whether it was a meal for one of the service station's customers, raising her 2 nieces, or offering her home to other family members. If you visited her at her home, she would always greet you with a smile, a cup of coffee and anything she would have baked at the moment. You might find her tending her garden or her chickens, helping in the service station or in her kitchen cooking up a delicious meal. Her home in New Market and her family were her pieces of heaven on earth. She always did her best to get along with everyone and to make sure everyone else did too. Her motto was to "kill them with kindness" and more often than not, her way was the best way. As her health failed she was no longer able to live in New Market. Her strongest wish was to return home someday. Anyone who ever knew Arella knows that she is home now, with her Lord and her Savior.
Arella was preceded in death by her husband: Fred Smith (09/01/1978) and Charles Wilson (02/01/1989), parents: Paul and Flora Garten, sisters: Pauline (Mrs Bill) Nuckolls and Katherine (Mrs Ray) Johnson.
