Petty, Charlotte - In Memoriam of Mrs Charlotte Petty, who died at Hawleyville at the house of her son-in-law Mr J.M. Hawley on Tuesday morning 8:30 o'clock March 25, 1862. Mrs Petty was born at Killingsworth, Ct, A.D. 1775, and her age was at the time of her decease, 86 years, 11 months and 10 days. She had been a very consistent member of the Baptist Church for about 69 years.
She had often expressed herself as ready and waiting for her last change. Her bible which was her constant companion in her younger days, seemed perculiarly precious in her last hours, she would express her earnest and hearty assent to its sacred truths as they were read to her, and seemed most earnest in her faith as she drew near the close of her life. She retained to the last a vivid recollection of some favorite hymns, and a short time before her death she respected distinctly and without prompting.
When asked if she expected to meet her children in heaven; she replied, "some of them." As she descended into the valley and shadow of death she raised her dying withered hand as the appointed signal that the great shepherd was with her. Her last words were--"I long"-- here her breath railed, and the Redeemer whom she had so often longed to see, took her, and the unfinished sentence was perhaps concluded as she entered the gates of the New Jerusalem with a rapturous shout of victory. Thomas John H. - John Henry Thomas, son of James Henry and Elizabeth Thomas, was born Jan 4, 1870, near Clarinda, Ia, and departed his earthly life for his Master's home Feb 7, 1936, age 66 years, 1 months and 3 days.
On Dec 19, 1900, he was united in marriage to Grace B. Hamm. Three children were born to this happy union, Verla Berniece Smith of Clarinda, Maynard Neil Thomas of Villisca, and Miss Eunice Mildred Thomas of Clarinda; two brothers, Ira Newton Thomas of New Market, Ia, and Sam Thomas of Long Town, Kans; one son-in-law, Hobart Smith, and one daughter-in-law, Mrs Wilma Thomas, all of whom survive this loved one. One sister, Fanny Thomas, passed away at infancy about 67 years ago, and the father when John Henry was 3 years of age. The mother passed away 17 years ago, two brothers, Edd Thomas, 19 years ago, and James Albert Thomas about 10 years ago.
The deceased's father and mother homesteaded on the farm 9 miles southeast of Clarinda, on which John Henry has lived practically all his life.
During his early life he attended church at Pleasant Ridge and at the age of 20 was converted at that place and later fellowshipped with the Church of God at Shambaugh, Ia. At different intervals he served as Sunday school superintendent and teacher of both the Pleasant Ridge church and the Church of God at Shambaugh.
He was a carpenter and farmer, having farmed the present Thomas homestead from youth to old age, and accomplishing much along the carpenter profession, having developed his father's traits.
In his home life he was an example of the kindest and most devoted loving father and husband, asking little and giving much, not only to his immediate family and relatives but to his friends and neighbors equally. His consideration also extended to pets.
Although his affliction began in early fall, his work was cheerfully carried on, revealing none of this until his suffering demanded the best of treatment. He entered the Mayo brothers hospital in Rochester, Minn, Dec 18, 1935. Although the best there was given he returned to his daughter's home, Mrs Hobart Smith, in Clarinda, being unable to make the entire journey to his farm home. During these four weeks of severe suffering all his immediate family was by his bedside, enduring and providing all that loving hands can do. His patient suffering was met willingly, expressing his willingness to suffer for all, that each may gain his Kingdom in Heaven.
During his recent illness, about two hundred friends and neighbors called at his bedside to extend their sympathy and help.
Funeral services were held at the Walker funeral chapel Tuesday afternoon, Feb 11, 1936, at 1:30 o'clock. Rev Fessler, pastor of the Church of God of Shambaugh, and Rev Charles Long, pastor of the Assembly of God in Clarinda, officiated, choosing from Revelations, 14th chapter, 13th verse. Rev Paul Long and sister, Miss Evelyn Long of Clarinda, accompanied by Mrs Bates at the piano, sang "My Mother's Bible," this being his mother's favorite song, it having been sung at her funeral service also. They also sang "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder" and "Death Is Only A Dream."
An ash-oak octagon casket was chosen especially for this father, whose great desire was working with beautiful woods.
In memory of his ever truthful light, which he gave to his daughter, who likewise gave same to her pupils, candles were lighted during the procession while viewing, the remains. The candlebearers were Madelyn Rush and Neva Belle Hamm. Flowerbearers were Reo Depew, Ermal Rush and Elman Davison. Pallbearers were Jesse Hughes, Doug Miller, Irvin Hamm, Lorraine Hughes, Jasper Smith and Dale Winger. He was laid to rest in the Clarinda cemetery.
