College Springs news items, Dec 23, 1920 Page County Democrat Miss Frances Smiley has returned from an extended visit in Oregon. Miss R. Wolff of Neenah, Wis., spent the week end at the King home. Dan Smith has returned from Crandon, So Dak where he has been working the past year. Mrs E.R. Zanoni of Denver, Colo, spent last week with her brother, H.B. King, and wife. Mr and Mrs Frank Lee and George Lee and Holmes Stogesbury of Red Oak spent Sunday here at the J.C. Dow home. Mrs D.C. Gibson’s sister, Zeta Pierce, came home from Iowa City, Tuesday, where she recently had an operation. Mr and Mrs J.E. Gibson were called to Summerfield, Kansas, Sunday by the death of Mrs Gibson’s father, Stan Black. Ben Rigler, who has been working at the carpenter’s trade in Alibon, Nebr arrived last night for a visit with home folks. J.W. Gibson and wife spent Sunday in Essex with their daughter, Mrs Carl Parsons. Mrs Parsons accompanied them home for a visit at this place. Omer Cook, who lives near Yorktown, assisted Jack Lane in the barber shop Saturday afternoon. Omer is planning on moving to College Springs as soon as he can make suitable arrangements. Miss Effie Reed of Lake Charles, La., sent her parents, Mr and Mrs E. Reed, a sample of the oranges raised in Louisiana. They are not like the oranges raised in the west but are sweet and good. We know, for Mrs Reed let us sample one. W.E. Dow underwent an operation for appendicitis, Monday at the Noyes hospital in St Joseph, Mo. He is reported as getting along nicely and expects to be out in a few days. Rev McBride of Hanover, Ill, occupied the pulpit at the U.P. church last Sabbath. Rev J.B. Work of Tarkio will preach next Sabbath and Dr R.T. Campbell ill fill the pulpit on Dec 26th. |
College Springs news items, Jan 29, 1920 Clarinda Herald Mrs John Sadler from Pella, Ia, is visitng her mother, Mrs Anna M. Bodwell. N.F. Henderson of Indianola is the new employee in the First National Bank. Pete Damewood and family are moving to a farm near Blanchard where Mr Damewood will work for Earl Gibson. Raymond Harrol of Mt Ayr has been visiting in the Crippen home. Miss Blanche Griffith and Beryl Fulton were married Monday afternoon at three o’clock at the home of the bride’s mother, Mrs Ora Griffith, southwest of town. Rev Kiest performed the ceremony and only the immediate family were present. Mr Fulton is an employee of the Gibson garage. The flu is running rampant in College Springs, more than a hundred cases in town. People are not as sick as last year, but the epidemic is no joke. |
College Springs news items – March 27, 1919 – The Clarinda Herald, Clarinda, Iowa Mrs Alfred McNulty and little child of Tarkio, Mo, visited here last week with relatives. Roscoe Applegate of Clarinda was here on business last Friday afternoon. J.C. Dow was in Coin, Saturday, taking the postmaster’s examination. The College Springs schools were closed last Thursday and Friday, on account of the teachers being in Shenandoah attending the Institute. Mrs J.C. Dow and son Douglas, returned home Saturday from a few days visit in Red Oak with her mother, Mrs Frank Lee and husband. Mr and Mrs Frank McCord visited with relatives in Coin, Friday and Saturday. Mr and Mrs M.L. Whittaker who live in Canada, have been visiting here at the Allen Bair home and with other friends. Jas S. Cunningham, a graduate of the Moody Institute in Chicago and who is here visitng with his brother, Will Cunningham, occupied the United Presbyterian church pulpit last Sunday evening and preached a very inspiring sermon. |
College Springs news items - April 28, 1899 - Clarinda Herald, Clarinda, Iowa The Y.W.C.A., gave "an inch" social Friday evening in college chapel. Mr May's lecture Monday evening was very good and was listened to by an appreciative audience. The recital given by Misses Miller and Elliott was well rendered and we feel like congratulating both teachers and pupils of the music department. Miss Baker from Clearmont [Missouri] visited with Mr Laughlins the first of the week. Geo Pierce is in Taylor county this week on business. Mrs Bear is some better and the doctor thinks she is on the way to recover. Miss Nellie Carlson was called home last week on account of the sickness of her little brother, who died Saturday evening and was buried here Monday afternoon. J.R. Good was down the first part of the week looking up his political interests. We are informed that the report concerning the marriage of Miss Anna Dempsie is not true and that she expects to live on in single blessedness. J.G. McCormick has purchased a new press for his office and hereafter there need be no disputes concerning who shall furnish the machinery. Miss Kimball of Clarinda visited with her aunt, Mrs Rodwell, Monday and Tuesday. Miss Aggie Bedford came up from Tarkio [Missouri] Wednesday. |
