Minnie (she was always known by this name) was a tall, pleasant lady. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Buch. She devoted her life to her husband and children. She always had chickens and a big garden. They usually had fruit trees also. She canned and preserved foods for the family and was an excellent cook. Her "scratch" recipe for chocolate cake and a special date cake are favorites of her niece to this day. While she dearly loved both her boys, Vernon was always her "baby". If there was a disagreement or spat between the two boys, it usually eneded up with Vernon being cuddled and Elmer getting to do both boys chores! She never forgot the daughter who died in infancy. Minnie was active in St John's Lutheran Church in Clarinda. In later years, she suffered from crippling arthritis which eventually became so severe she was confined to a wheel chair. She and her husband made several trips to a Hot Springs in Arkansas which did give her some relief. |
