| This cemetery is called Cooper or Pin Hook or Pleasant Hill. It is out in a field and currently does not have a road to it. Even though the newspaper headline said that the Cooper Cemetery was no more, that was not true. Only 11 graves were moved from the cemetery Nov 17, 1926 to the Clarinda city cemetery. Other family's graves were not moved and some members of the Cooper family continued to bury in the cemetery. |

The Cooper Cemetery No More Many people driving on the old river road between Clarinda and Sambaugh, are familiar with a group of evergreen trees on a distant hill to the east of the road. These trees for about sixty years have been sentinels at the last resting place of members of the Cooper family. In order to get to the cemetery it was necessary to traverse a steep winding road, that in wet weather it was almost impossible for an automobile to climb. John Cooper and his wife, Leah Cooper, and their children, Isabell, Addison, Ellis, P.W. and A.L. Cooper, were buried there. Later, Lindsay Cooper, who was a grandson of the first John Cooper, and a son of Mr and Mrs John Cooper who now live in Clarinda, lost his life in a balloon accident in Texas and again a funeral procession wound its way up the hill and the body of Lindsey was laid away in the family burying ground. When the World war came two more sons of Mr and Mrs John Cooper, Lawrence and Delbert, lost their lives. They died in France. After the war their bodies were brought to America, and, after a military funeral in Clarinda, were laid away near the evergreens in the family lot. The members of Sergy Post have been very devoted to the memory of their comrades and each Memorial day have gone to the Cooper cemetery to decorate their graves. Because of the difficulty in gaining access to the cemetery, John Cooper of Clarinda and members of his family decided that it would be very much more practical to have the last resting place of their family in the Clarinda cemetery, so a few weeks ago the bodies of those laid away in the old burying ground were brought to Clarinda and buried in a lot in Birchwood. Eleven bodies were brought here, including that of an infant child of Mr and Mrs Cooper...unreadable last sentence. |

| Cooper, F., Feb 11, 1831 - Sep 22, 1904 [originally Cooper Cem, moved Nov 17, 1926] Fountain Cooper, an old settler of Page county, died Thursday, Sept 22, 1904, of heart and liver trouble, at the home of his son, John Cooper, in East River township, age 73 years. His funeral was held Saturday, conducted by his nephew, Rev Alex Cooper of Bolckow, Mo. The burial was in the Cooper cemetery south of the old Shambaugh mill site in East River township. The late Mr Cooper was a native of Tennessee. The late Mr Mr Cooper is survived by four children, as follows: John Cooper, East River township, Page county; Harrison Cooper, Centerville, Ia; Mrs John Marshall, Clarinda, and Mrs Sarah McBee, Nodaway county, Mo. Cooper, Madlyn Joyce, 09 Jul 1923 - 19 Aug 1923 : Madlyn Joyce Cooper, daughter of Mr and Mrs Hugh Cooper was taken from her parents by death Sunday morning, August 19, at their home on East Garfield St. She was born July 9, 1923, at Sioux City, Iowa. The child was aged 2 months and 10 days at the time of her death. Funeral services are to be held this afternoon (Monday) from the Harmon Funeral Home at 2:30 o'clock. Burial will be held at the Cooper cemetery southeast of Clarinda.

| Cox, Nathan George, 04 Mar 1843 - 15 Sep 1923 : Another from among our older citizens passed away Sept 15th, Nathan Cox, at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 11 days. It is rather remarkable that the nine children of this man are still living, without the loss of one. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the United Brethren Church, conducted by the pastor Rev E.M. Miller. Born March 4th, 1843 in Tennessee, he spent his early years there, later moving to Iowa. Fifteen years ago his wife, Miriam Anna Cox, preceded him to the grave. All of their nine children are living besides fifty grand children, the names of the children being Mrs James Cochran of Falls Branch, Tenn, Mrs John Kincheloe of Clarinda, Mrs John Smith of St Anna, Tex, Mrs Ben Basho of Creston, Ia, Will Cox of Clarinda, Mrs Sam Brown of Hepburn, Charley Cox of Clarinda, Joe Cox of Akron, Ia, and James Cox of Red Oak. | Filley, Olive Leone Chaney, 03 Jun 1840 - 10 Aug 1934 : Mrs Wm. Filley, 94, Dies at County Home Grandma Filley, one of Clarinda's oldest citizens was laid to rest Sunday, after 94 years of life. She was the widow of Wm A. Filley who died in 1920. She died at the Page county home Friday, the funeral being conducted Sunday at the Pruitt Funeral Home by Rev M. Hulbert. Burial was in Cooper cemetery. CLARINDA HERALD-JOURNAL, Clarinda, Iowa, Aug 13, 1934 Olive Leone Chancy was born June 3, 1840, in Indiana and departed this life August 10, 1934 at the Page county home near Clarinda, Iowa, aged 94 years, 2 months and 8 days. On October 12, 1866, she was united in marriage to William A. Filley who preceded her in death, November 9, 1920. To this union were born eight children who preceded her in infancy. They moved to Page county in an early day and lived in and near Clarinda until the present. She leaves to mourn their loss one sister at Fort Collins, Colo., and a nephew at New Market, Ia., also a host of friends. In her early life she and her husband gave their hearts to God and their hands to the United Brethren church and lived in that faith till they were called hence. She was a lady that made friends of all she met, better known as Grandma Filley. Among the treasures that she cherished most highly was the old family Bible. From those that knew her best comes this tribute: :She was a good woman.: What more could be said of anyone? The funeral was conducted from the Pruitt Funeral Home by Rev Marshall Hulbert and the body layed to rest by the side of her husband and children is what is known as the Cooper cemetery. | Filley, William Albert, Nov 1842 - 28 Aug 1925 : At the age of over 83 years, William Albert Filley passed away on August 28th, at their home on South 10th Street, Clarinda. Funeral services were held Saturday from the Walker Funeral Chapel, with interment in Pin Hook Cemetery. Mr Filley leaves a wife surviving him, Mrs Leona Filley, the two having been married 56 years ago and constant companions all these years. CLARINDA HERALD, Clarinda, Iowa, Sep 3, 1925 Obituary - William Elbert Filley was born in November, 1842, in the state of Tennessee and departed this life Aug 27, 1925, aged 83 years and 9 months. He was united in marriage to Miss Olive Chaney in the year 1869. Much sorrow entered their home as the eight children which were born to them were all taken from them in death, six in infancy. One child lived to the age of 9 years and another lived to be 5. So he had many loved faces to greet him to the home to which he has just gone. The deceased is survived by his aged wife and a host of friends who sorrow over the loss of a loved one. Mr Filley united with the Baptist church in his young manhood and was [paper folded] friends. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the late home on South Tenth street and interment was made in the Pin Hook cemetery where his children are buried. Lewis, pastor of the First Baptist church, and interment was in the cemetery at the John Cooper farm four miles southeast of this city, near the farm formerly owned by the deceased. Mr Marshall was born in England, Nov 12, 1851. He was a great sufferer from a cancer for about two years before his death. Beside the wife, a son and stepson survive. For a long time he was a respected citizen of this locality. | Stronell, Lucy Ann Cooper, 28 Mar 1858 - 11 Apr 1931 : Page County, Iowa Death Certificate Marshall, Lucy Ann, died Apr 11, 1931 Nodaway Twp; widowed; born Mar 29, 1858 Mo; father Fountain Cooper born unk; mother unk; buried Cooper cem Obituary - Lucy Ann Cooper, daughter of Mr and Mrs Fountain Cooper, was born in Gentry county, Missouri, on March 29, 1858, and died at her home in Clarinda, Iowa, April 11, 1931, having reached the age of 73 years and 12 days. Miss Cooper was married to John Bomar in 1875. To them were given two children, John H. Bomar, deceased, and Elwood Henry Bomar of Utica, Missouri. After the death of Mr Bomar, Mrs Bomar was married on Sept 12, 1880, to John Marshall. One son came to bless the union, F.W. Marshall of Clarinda, Ia. John Marshall died on March 9, 1910. On March 7, 1916, Mrs Marshall was married to Alfred J. Stronell, who passed away Nov 9, 1919. Mrs Stronell was better known to her friends and neighbors as Mrs Marshall, and was thus kindly regarded by them. Two brothers and a sister are left to mourn with the son her passing. They are: John Cooper of Clarinda, Ia; Harrison Cooper of Hutchison, Kansas, and Mrs Sarah McBee of Council Bluffs, Ia. There are also seven grandchildren in the families. Mrs Marshall was a member of the Baptist church for many years and died possessed of faith in Jesus Christ. She was a resident of Clarinda and vicinity since 1875. | VanPelt, Mary E. Cooper, 1856 - 1895 - Died on the 1st, Mrs VanPelt at her home and was laid to rest at Pleasant Hill grave yard. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community. CLARINDA HERALD, Clarinda, Iowa, Mar 5, 1895 Mrs Hiram VanPelt died last night at her home in East River township, age 37 years. Her new born babe died last Sunday evening.
