Osage - county seat
(pages 780-782) Population 2,800. The judicial seat of Mitchell county, is an incorporated city located on the Red [sic] Cedar river and on the Illinois Central and the Chicago, Great Western Rys. (depots 100 yards apart), 17 miles northeast of Charles City, 64 northwest of Waterloo, 157 northwest of Dubuque and 340 from Chicago. It is lighted by electricity, has municipal water works, fire department, telephone facilities, an opera house, 4 banks and 2 weekly newspapers - the Mitchell County Press and Journal and the Osage News. There are churches of the Baptist, Catholic, Christian Science, Congregational, Methodist and Universal denominations and it has an exceptionally fine system of public schools. The County Fair Association have extensive grounds. This is the trade center for a rich agricultural section and ships large quantities of live stock, hay, grain, butter, eggs, cheese, lime rock, fertilizers, and nursery stock. Tel., Postal and W.U.
