Wayne Campbell 1925-2008 Posted by: Roger Stubbe <Rstubbe@hcjb.org> -- 8/7/2008 (Jurrens Funeral Home – obituary) Wayne Campbell, age 83 of Rock Rapids, Lyon county, Iowa died Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, Minnesota. Funeral services were held, Friday, August 8th at the Christian Church (Disciples) in Rock Rapids. Burial will follow at the Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Charles Wayne Campbell was born on March 2, 1925 in Corwith, Iowa to George and Annie (Jurgensen) Campbell. He graduated from Corwith High School in 1944 and went on to attend Iowa State University. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1949 to 1951. Upon his discharge Wayne moved to Rock Rapids to work for Northwest Iowa Breeders Cooperative. Soon after, he met Virginia Skidmore Hansen. They married on August 18, 1952 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa and made their home in Rock Rapids on a small farm one mile north of town. One year later they purchased their acreage on South Tama Street to form a dairy operation. Through the years they cultivated small crops and also raised Shetland ponies, cattle, pigs, and sheep. In addition to farming and caring for his animals, Wayne continued his employment with Iowa Breeders and later worked for Greenlee Packing Company in Sioux Falls, SD from 1965 to 1970. During the early 1970’s, Wayne bought a local excavating business and dubbed it “Campbell Construction”. He operated a backhoe and trencher, dug water lines, and moved dirt and snow. Poor health forced him to retire in 1989. Following several strokes, Wayne continued to live at home under his wife Virginia’s loving care. In September 2003, declining health required him to move to the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, Minnesota. Wayne was a member of the Christian Church Disciples in Rock Rapids and served as a deacon, trustee, and board chairman. Over the years he was a member of the American Farm Bureau, the American Legion, and the Beef and Pork Producers. The Central Lyon FFA awarded him an honorary membership to thank him for contributing many years of service to their club. Wayne’s family remembers him fondly and remains grateful for being given the opportunity to share his life. This includes his wife of nearly 56 years, Virginia of Rock Rapids and their six children; two sons, Doug (Diane) Campbell of Palm Bay, Florida and Steven (Debbie) Campbell of Rock Rapids; 4 daughters, Jerri (Roger) Korenberg of California, Missouri, Carol Vander Kolk and Randy Jensen of Inwood, Lyon county, Iowa, Patricia Campbell of Chicago, Illinois, and Mary (Don) Smith of Luverne, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren, Scott (Mona) Campbell, Karen Korenberg, Kevin (Erin) Korenberg, Paul (Tonya) Campbell, Aaron Campbell, Dustin Vander Kolk, Collin Campbell, Julia Campbell, Brittany Vogt and Kelsey Vogt; three step-grandchildren, Trey Smith, Cameron Smith, and Spencer Smith; and eight great-grandchildren, Christine, Leah, Elijah, Nicholas, Aidan, Riley, Cameron, and Danika. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Carolyn, and infant brother.

 

Iona (Fox) Beek 1915-2008 Posted by: Roger Stubbe <Rstubbe@hcjb.org> -- 8/7/2008 Iona Beek age 92 of Sibley, Osceola county, Iowa died Sunday, August 3, 2008 at Sibley Nursing and Rehab Center in Sibley. Funeral services were held Thursday, August 7, 2008 at Salem Reformed Church of Little Rock, Lyon county, Iowa. Burial followed in Pleasant View Cemetery at Little Rock. Iona (Fox) Beek was born October 16, 1915, at Ashton, Obrien county, Iowa the daughter of John and Fannie (Kruger) Fox. Iona grew up in Ashton and Little Rock area where she attended school. She was united in marriage to Henry Beek on March 14, 1945, at Little Rock. After their marriage Iona and Henry first farmed near Little Rock for ten years. In 1955, they moved to Cherokee, Iowa where they purchased and operated the Skyline Motel. In 1959, they moved to Sibley, Iowa where they purchased the Gamble Store in downtown Sibley. Iona and Henry later settled in Le Mars, Iowa in 1967, where they ran a Gamble Store and Iona did some janitorial work. In 1995, they moved back to Sibley. Iona was a true caregiver, caring for her family was always at the top of her priorities. They resided in their home until becoming residents of Sibley Nursing and Rehab Center in June of 2001. In December of 2001, Iona’s husband, Henry died. She is survived by a sister, Arlene Henrichs of Little Rock, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Karla (Troy) Fosse of New York Mills, Minnesota; Sheila (Dan) Moore of Boston, Massechusetts; Pamela (Roger) Stice of Skiatook, Oklahoma; Paula (Tom) Koelzer of Omaha, Nebraska; Michael Martin of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Russell Martin of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Rebecca (Marty) Lueck of Ironton, Minnesota and 16 great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews. Iona was preceded in death by her parents, John and Fannie; her husband, Henry and her daughter, Verona.

 

Rosalie Heikes 1919-2008 (Posted by: Roger Stubbe <Rstubbe@hcjb.org> -- 8/7/2008) Rosalie Heikes, age 88 of Rock Rapids, Lyon county, Iowa died Sunday, July 27, 2008 at the Rock Rapids Health Centre. Memorial services were held Wednesday, July 30th at the United Methodist Church in Rock Rapids. Burial followed at the Grand Prairie Cemetery near Ellsworth, Nobles county, Minnesota. Rosalie was born December 21, 1919 at her family home in Lynd, Minnesota to Roy and Vinnie (Austin) Nicholson. She graduated from Lynd High school in 1938 and was a 1941 graduate from the School of Agriculture at the University of Minnesota, where she met her future husband. Rosalie was married to George P. Heikes on March 22, 1947. George passed away on March 14, 2005 just 8 days short of their 60th wedding anniversary. The couple farmed northeast of Ellsworth their entire lives before retirement. In 1997, they hosted a celebration to mark a century of family farming. In 1978, they moved into Ellsworth. They moved into Premier Estates in Rock Rapids in 2003 and the Rock Rapids Health Centre in 2005. Rosalie was very active in Ellsworth and surrounding communities serving the school PTA, Congregational Church Sunday School as teacher and superintendent, American Legion Auxiliary, Nobles County Welfare Board member, Red Cross volunteer, started a NAMI chapter in Nobles Co., member of the DAR, and Society of Mayflower Descendents. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Rock Rapids. During World War II, she worked as a nurse’s aid at Gillette State Hospital for Crippled Children. She worked for 10 years at Arnold Memorial Nursing Home in Adrian as a nurse’s aide and later volunteered as a Gray Lady. She enjoyed bird watching, embroidering, gardening, reading, ceramics, and was a wonderful cook. She was a faithful letter writer keeping in touch with many people she had met throughout her life. Rosalie is survived by two sons, Lambert (Norma) Heikes, Lusby, Maryland; Carleton (Lisa) Heikes, Ellsworth; three daughters, Jennifer Collins, Spicer; Cynette (Jerry) Wipf, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Janet Heikes (Steven Sullivan), Hoffman Estates, IL; one sister, Florence Lund Williams, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, eleven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Arlys (Lindaman) Kruse 1930-2008 (Posted By: Roger Stubbe 7/21/2008) Arlys Kruse was born April 23, 1930 at Little Rock, Lyon county, Iowa. She was the daughter of William J. and Myrtle (Hallet) Lindaman. She grew up in the Little Rock area and graduated from the Little Rock High School in 1947. She then went to Estherville, Iowa, College and received her teaching certificate. When she was in her forty’s she went back to college and received her four-year teaching degree from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. She taught 10 years in country schools in Bigelow and Worthington, Minnesota. She was married to Andrew E. Kruse on July 30, 1948 at Little Rock. They lived in George, Lyon county for a short time, then moved back to Little Rock, Iowa in 1959. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, American Legion Auxiliary, she played BINGO every Tuesday at the V.A. Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She was a member of Women’s Club, loved to travel, enjoyed her dog, and was a member of the City Council for 10 years. She was know as the historian of Little Rock, Iowa writing two books on the subject. Arlys passed away Sunday, July 13, 2008 at the Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, Iowa at the age of 78. She leaves to cherish her memories two sons, Clayton and wife Sharon Kruse of Boyden, Sioux country, Iowa and Kenny and wife Cheryl Kruse of Matlock, Iowa; five grandchildren, Scott, Chad, Alicia, Erica and Andy; one sister, Eleanor Hayes of Brighton, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Andrew; one son, Keith; and two brothers, William and Eldon. The funeral service was held July 16, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church of Little Rock, Iowa with interment at Pleasant View Cemetery, also at Little Rock. Edward Joseph Nauman 1923-2008 (Posted by: Roger Stubbe <Rstubbe@hcjb.org> -- 8/11/2008) Edward Joseph Nauman was born November 25, 1923 at Dubuque, Dubuque county, Iowa, the son of Edward Carl and Anna (Kielty) Nauman. He lived his youth in the Charles City, Iowa area and graduated from the Charles City High School, where he was the State Tennis Champion while at the Charles City High School. He served in the US Army during World War II. He married Helene Gerdes of Woden, Hancock county, Iowa on January 19, 1944 at Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa. They lived in Charles City for a short time after their marriage. They moved to George, Lyon county, Iowa in 1947. He worked for the Lyon County News as a Linotype Operator and wrote several columns, Fishing Lines and The Thursday Thoughts. He was a member of the bowling league for many years, was an accomplished Cribbage player, and a member of the American Legion Jack Sauter Post 404 of George, Iowa. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Sibley, Iowa. Ed passed away May 20, 2008 at the George Good Samaritan Center at the age of 84. He leaves to cherish his memories, two sons, Douglas and wife Patricia Nauman of Anamosa, Iowa and Thomas and wife Eileen Nauman of Carlsbad, California; two grandchildren, Lee Nauman and Kira and husband Brandon Hass. Leo Persoon 1913-2008 (Posted by: Roger Stubbe <Rstubbe@hcjb.org> -- 8/11/2008) Leo Persoon, age 94 of Rock Rapids, Lyon county Iowa, formerly of Alvord, Lyon county, Iowa died Thursday, July 31, 2008 at Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehab Center in Rock Rapids. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated, Tuesday, August 5th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alvord. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alvord with Military Graveside Honors by Dick DeBoer Post #704 American Legion in Alvord and Rex Strait Post #103 American Legion in Rock Rapids. Leo Persoon was born near Larchwood, Lyon county, Iowa, on November 7, 1913, to Henry and Felicia (Verlinde) Persoon. He was a lifelong farmer in the Alvord area and served for 35 years in various positions with the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS). He married Rachael Birgen of Beresford, South Dakota, on August 26, 1947, and raised three sons, Jim, Dick, and Jerry. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Dick DeBoer Post #704 of the American Legion. He also belonged to the Alvord Gun Club and Sacred Heart Parish, Alvord. Upon retirement, he moved to Rock Rapids and joined Holy Name Parish. He is survived by his son Jim (Mary) of Spring Lake, Michigan; his daughter-in-law Barbara of Pleasantville, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Justin, Catherine, Rebecca, Michael, Carolyn, Doug, and Eric; and four great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Austin, Trevor, and Imani. Gaylord Shrick 1933-2008 Gaylord Schrick was born April 19, 1933 at rural George, Lyon county, Iowa. He was the son of George and Anita (Klingenborg) Schrick. He lived his youth in the George area and graduated from the George High School He married Ellen Kix of George, Iowa on June 29, 1953. They farmed west of town for a few years. They moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and later to the Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota area where he was a purchasing agent for a manufacturing company for 30 years. His love was farming and working with his hands doing woodworking. Being in ill health, he became a resident of the George Good Samaritan Center in September of 2005 and passed away there on Monday, June 16, 2008 at the age of 75 He leaves to cherish is memories, his children, Galen Schrick of Portland, Oregon; Lori and husband Bill Hanley of Saint Paul, Minnesota; and Janna and husband Matt Homan of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Also left to cherish his memories are five grandchildren, Laura and Spencer Hanley and Erika, Grace, and Matea Homan; three brothers, Byron and wife Glenda Schrick of George, Iowa; Judson and wife Carol Schrick of Decorah, Iowa; Edgar and wife Marilyn Schrick of Rock Rapids, Iowa and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife. The memorial service was held on June 19, 2008 at the Central Baptist church in George, with interment in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery west of town. Memorial service was held Tuesday, July 29th, 2008 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids. Burial followed at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Wilma Lee Schubert was born August 28, 1936, to Ben and Bernice (Reid) Dieters in Rock Rapids. Wilma grew up in Rock Rapids and graduated from Rock Rapids High School in 1955. Following graduation she attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota studying Liberal Arts. On August 9, 1957, Wilma was united in marriage to Dale Schubert at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids. To this union three daughters were born, Kay, Kathy and Sue. Dale and Wilma raised their family in Rock Rapids. Wilma had many interests and several jobs over the years with her most recent working as a pharmacy tech with Lewis Family Drug until her retirement in 2005. Wilma enjoyed camping with her family when her kids were young. She also liked to bowl and golf. She even had a hole in one to her credit. Her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids were very important to Wilma. She loved them dearly and enjoyed spending time with them, babysitting the younger ones and attending the sporting events of the older kids. Wilma will be remembered as a people person. She had many friends in the community and loved to sit and talk with them. She will be missed by many. Clifford Van Wyhe 1920-2008 (Posted by: Roger Stubbe <Rstubbe@hcjb.org> -- 8/7/2008) Clifford Van Wyhe, age 88 of Hills, Minnesota passed away Thursday, July 24, 2008 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Celebration service was held Monday, July 28th at the United Methodist Church in Luverne, Minnesota. Burial was at Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Clifford Miles Van Wyhe was born on July 12, 1920, the son of John and Ida (Wandscheer) Van Wyhe in Lester, Lyon county, Iowa. He grew up in Lester and graduated from Lester High School in 1938. On August 20, 1944, he was united in marriage to Alvina “Vi” Warner at the Larchwood Community Church in Larchwood, Lyon county, Iowa. They lived in Lester and Cliff farmed with his dad. In 1948 they moved to Steen, Minnesota, where they farmed and raised their family. They built a home north of Hills, Minnesota, in 1980 where they have resided for twenty-eight years. Cliff and Vi were blessed to have traveled the world together. Cliff gave his talents to many organizations including Sunday School Superintendent at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Steen. He was currently a member of the United Methodist Church in Luverne, where he served three terms as Chairman. He was Mayor of Steen, Minnesota for a number of years and was on the Rock County Planning and Zoning Board. Cliff was an accomplished musician, both vocally and on the keyboard. In his early years he played in “The Swingsters” band with his two brothers and his mother. He enjoyed playing the organ daily at home and for regional events. He loved sports especially basketball and football and traveled far and wide with Vi attending games. Additionally, his hobbies included solving crossword puzzles, jumble puzzles and enjoyed repairing things for his family. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of sixty-three years, Vi Van Wyhe of Hills, Minnesota; three children: Steven (Marilyn) Van Wyhe of Steen, Minnesota, Thomas (Crystal) Van Wyhe and Lexia (Ron) DeWit all of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; seven grandchildren: Dr. Heather Van Wyhe of Owasso, Oklahoma, Amber (Travis) Arends of Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada, Justin Van Wyhe of Dexter, Iowa, Teri (Matt) Mercer of Omaha, Nebraska, Matthew Van Wyhe of Sioux Falls, SD and Lindsey and Ashley DeWit of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two great-grandchildren: Ella Van Wyhe and Mason Mercer; and nieces and nephews. Zornig, 96, of Rock Rapids, Lyon county, Iowa, died Monday, August 4, 2008 at the Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rock Rapids. Funeral Services will be will be held Saturday, August 9, 2008 at the Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Marvin Zornig was born on May 14, 1912 in Rock Rapids, the son of William and Ella (Dickman) Zornig. He married Dorothy Huisman on March 21, 1934 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; she later died on March 5, 1993. Marvin had farmed most of his life in Lyon County. He also had worked at the Gage Elevator in Lester, Iowa, for 10 years retiring in 1974. He was past-president of the Lyon County Farm Bureau where he was a long time member. Marvin enjoyed fishing especially his trips to northern Minnesota (Lake Ottertail) and winter fishing on the Iowa Great Lakes. He was an avid dancer, and enjoyed dancing at least twice a week until he was 92. Marvin is survived by one daughter: Diane Friesner of Estherville, Iowa; one son: Dennis Zornig of Clinton, Iowa; four grandchildren: Ben Clark and his wife Katie of Frisco, Texas, Katie Quiring and her husband Chris of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Matt Zornig of Iowa City, Iowa, and Jennifer Harris and her husband Quintin of Lawrence, Kansas; 7 great-grandchildren: Andrew, Cale, and Jordan Quiring, Brady Clark, and Keegan, Finn, and Jack Harris. Ten Braak, age 85 of Doon, Lyon county Iowa died Saturday, August 9, 2008 at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral service were held Wednesday, August 13th at First Reformed Church in Doon. Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery in Doon with Military Honors by Rock River Post No. 476 American Legion. Henry John Ten Braak was born March 5, 1923 in Rock Valley, Sioux county, Iowa, the son of Andrew and Margaret (Beyer) Ten Braak. He was raised on family farm near Doon and attended country school. After school he continued helping with the family farm as well as working for other area farms. On January 19, 1943 he entered the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged on February 12, 1946. Henry returned home and was united in marriage on June 3, 1949 to Jennie Hilbrands at Hope Reformed Church in George, Lyon county, Iowa. They moved to Doon and Henry managed the Schoeneman’s Lumber Yard for the next 37 ½ years. Henry was a member of the First Reformed Church, active with consistory, town council, Doon School board, the Historical Board and Lyon County Revenue Board. He enjoyed gardening, fishing at Rock River, hunting pheasant and attending the Army Reunions. His family will remember Henry for his love and his devotion to his faith, family and friends. He tended to his family and friends as a gardener would tend to his garden. In May of 2008, Henry suffered a stroked and became a resident in June of 2008 at Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehab Center in Rock Rapids, Lyon county, Iowa. This past Saturday, August 9, 2008 Henry died at Avera-McKennan Hospital at the age of 85. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 59 years, Jennie Ten Braak of Doon; three daughters, Marlene Vande Berg, Ruth Ten Braak, both of Raleigh, North Carolina and Nancy (Kevin) Naddy of Maple Grove, Minnesota; two grandsons, John Naddy and Philip (Michelle) Vande Berg; a granddaughter, Megan Naddy; two brothers, Chris (Judy) Ten Braak of Wichita, Kansas and Andy (Glorianne) Rapid City, South Dakota; three sisters, Christina Erickson of Garretson, South Dakota, Martha Anderson of Doon, and Jennie (Bob) Stallman of Hartley, Iowa. Roberta (Ford) PETERSON 1922-2008 (Posted by: Roger Stubbe <Rstubbe@hcjb.org> -- 8/11/2008) Roberta Peterson, age 86 of Lyons, Kansas, formerly of Rock Rapids, Lyon county, Iowa died Friday, August 8, 2008 at Lyons Good Samaritan Home in Lyons, Kansas. The funeral service was, Thursday, August 14th at United Methodist Church in Rock Rapids. Burial was at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids. Roberta Ford was born March 17, 1922 to Ernest and Lucy May (Huddleson) Ford in Zion, Iowa. She received her early education in Zion and later graduated as a registered nurse from nursing school in Iowa City, Iowa. She worked as a nurse in Des Moines, Iowa, until the time of her marriage. On February 5, 1949 Roberta was united in marriage to John Peterson and the couple made their home in Rock Rapids. To this union two children were born, Greg and Susan. In Rock Rapids, Roberta was a member of the United Methodist Church and was involved with the Eastern Star and Girl Scouts. She was a very community minded person and enjoyed helping where she could. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed making a beautiful landscape of color year after year in the back yard of their house in Rock Rapids. Roberta loved nature, especially flowers, plants and trees, in particular evergreen trees. She also very much enjoyed watching the birds as they visited her yard and garden. Roberta and John lived in Rock Rapids until 1969 when John was transferred to the St. Louis, Missouri area with his job. In 1999 they moved to Creston, Iowa to be closer to family and later to Marquette, Kansas. In 2003, John passed away ending their marriage of fifty four years. This past Friday, August 8th, Roberta passed away at the age of 86. She will be remembered as a cheerful and bubbly person and her love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren had very deep roots. She will be missed by many. Roberta is survived by one son, Greg Peterson and his wife Charlene of Quamado, New Mexico; and one daughter, Susan Anderson and her husband Michael of Geneseo, Kansas. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; brothers, Gerald (Jeanette) Ford of Creston, Iowa and Edward (Dorothy) Ford of Orange, California; sisters, Barbara Brownrigg of Creston, Iowa, and Phyllis (Daryl) Haan of Odessa, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
