THE FRED METZGER FAMILY
Fred Metzger was born to George and Eliza Volz Metzger on January 29, 1885. Karoline Regina Knobloch was born to Wilhelm and Friederike Knobloch on January 5, 1887, in Wurttemberg, Germany. Karoline (Carrie) came with her parents to Lyon County, Iowa, at the age of three. Fred came to the Lester area in 1906. Fred and Karoline were married November 17, 1907. They farmed near Alvord and south of Lester prior to moving north of Lester in 1914, where they resided until retiring in Lester in 1950.
They had fourteen children; nine sons, including: Ernst, Wilhelm, Paul, Jacob, Elmer, Emil, Eli, Fred Jr., and Roy; and five daughters, including: Emma Meyer, Freida Mogler, Karoline Wuthrich, Lydiann Wyss and Pearline Streitmatter. Two of the sons Paul and Emil, are deceased. While farming they raised purebred Herefords and Jerseys. Karoline raised many geese and ducks and sold the feathers. For about twelve years they boarded teachers who taught their country schools.
Their first car was a Model A-1917. Fred remembers Lester with many businesses and stores that no longer exist. When retired Fred and Karoline were active with many things, such as gardening, canning, sewing, entertaining and fishing. Fred especially enjoyed working with clocks.
Fred and Karoline moved to the Lyon Manor in Rock Rapids, Iowa. Karoline passed away an November 22, 1980. Fred continues to be as active, as his 104 years will let him.
