Fleek Brothers
(Squire, Charles, Nicholas & Henry)
Submitted by: Joy Eastes Pero

Squire B. Fleek and his brothers Charles, Nicholas and Henry were the sons of Abraham Fleek and Christina Marstiller.  They were born in Lafayette, Tippecanoe, Indiana, but came to reside in Linn County between 1855 and 1870.  The boys had one sister, Catherine who died in Indiana at the age of 12 and is buried in Greenbush Cemetery, Lafayette, Tippecanoe, Indiana near the grave of her father. My 2nd great-grandfather was Uncle to these men.

Charles and Henry served the Union during the Civil War and lost their lives. Nicholas and Squire continued to reside in Iowa. Squire in Linn County and Nicholas in Webster County.  At least 2 of the 4 brothers are buried there in Linn county and I am fairly certain that Squire B. Fleek will be found somewhere in Iowa too. Charles and Henry are at the Veterans Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Charles was originally buried in Missouri where he died during the war, but his body was moved later.  I have a photo image of a document about the removal of Charles Fleek to Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa and his original internment at National Cemetery, St Louis, Mo.  However there is still some question as to weather there is only a marker there or if his body had been moved because the document states that the date his body was moved is unknown.

Nicholas Fleek Dies; A Pioneer Blacksmith
"Nick" Fleek, a former blacksmith, who has been a familiar Fort Dodge figure since 1869, passed away at his home in this city on Thirteenth street and Fifth avenue north, at 2:00 a. m. today. He has been in a critical condition for about two weeks and has been in failing health for about a year. Last August Mr. Fleet was injured in an automobile accident and this precipitated his fatal illness.
Mr. Fleet 'sic' was about seventy five years old. He was born May 23, 1840, in Lafayette, Indiana. He served in the Union army with Co. E, Tenth Indiana, during the rebellion. September 24, 1865, he was married at Cedar Rapids to Miss Mary Smith and they moved to Fort Dodge in 1869. Until the last few years Mr. Fleek engaged in blacksmithing and became known all over the countryside. His wife, who is but little his junior, is prostrated by the shock of his death. She has no children to assuage her grief at this time, their only child having died in infancy. Her brother, D. W. Smith, of Waterloo, has been with her for some time and is at her side now.
The funeral has been arranged for Sunday afternoon at 2:00. The place and other details will be announced Saturday.
