"French Ridge" was not actually a town, but rather an area just
west of Anamosa. A great many of the people who worked in the quarries
were French, and as they migrated from France and settled in Canada,
they eventually settled in an area on the Canada-New York borderline.
From there they worked their way west to the Anamosa area. The area they
settled was called "French Ridge" because of their nationality. They
were all good, hardworking people, holding high respect among all in the
county.

Note from Transcriber/Researcher, Bernice Elizabeth Sampica Paul
Death records weren't recorded in Jones Co., until August 1880, but in borrowing
4 years of The Eureka newspaper, I found the following information. Thanks is
given to the staff for their kind assistance.
The newspaper noted that
there was an epidemic of diptheria in this area during the 1870s. In the 27 Jan
1879 issue, this notice was found: "Died—3 children of Frank Sampica, 12 yrs., 6
yrs., and 4 yrs., of diptheria. One died Saturday and two on Sunday." The 6 Feb
1879 issue had this notice: "Another child of Frank Sampica." [no name, age, or
date given].
According to family history, Ludger Sampica was called
"Edgar" by the family. In addition, I have found variations in the spelling of
his name on various documents: Leedgar, Ludjer, Luger, and Lugier. Ludger is the
son of Jean Baptiste Sampica, Sr., and brother of John Baptiste Sampica, Jr. He
was born in 1833, and married to Philomina Loretta Durancean from Churubusco,
NY. She was known by the name "Josephine."
