Cemetery history by Pauline Lillie
[Note: This cemetery was never known as the Denzler cemetery. The Bishop's
donated the land. The Denzler's later bought the remaining land and
lived nearby when this information was gathered. -LKM, 11 Nov 2013]
Located
Washington township 81 Range 10 Section 16, one half mile north of
Marengo, then 2 miles east and ¼ mile up a gravel road, to narrow
lane, on the east side. All three sides are covered by timber, in
fact the whole area is timber. Only that part where the cemetery
is located and land in front.
History
The 1874 Atlas on page 21, lists only small land plots in this
area. 1900 Atlas p. 40-41-This cemetery is up the lane of Section
16, in the SW corner of the Jacob Stephens land (only a strip of
land.) 1915 History p. 7; This is listed on the SW edge of town-
ship 16, but in field of the Jacob B. Denzler land and part of it
on his land.
Cemetery never was completely filled, on that part of the north end,
and west part has stones. The other part of the cemetery has grass,
is mowed by township trustees by machine. Few weeds there. The back
part where the stones, are used to be mowed and carefully cared for
by John Schumacher, part of the early family group of people. After
his death (burial here 1962) it has been little mowed. When I was
there in 1962 the east half was not mowed on graves of Bishops or
Denzlers. The Denzlers did have a nice iron fence around theirs,
but it was down when I was there in 1970. I recall some years past
that some of the Denzlers moved some relatives over into the Marengo
I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Marengo (befor I copied.)
The Bishops had a large family listed in the 1850 census with 14 child-
ren most married into families of Marengo; The Denzlers and Stephens
were a close family, for they all were a group of Germans. Most if
not all attended Church at Marengo. Descendants still live around
here.
Condition
As I stated it is cared for- only what is necessary by the township
trustees. Altho hundreds of descendants living from every family
buried in the cemetery. If you mention it to them, their attitude
same as with others- Let the Township Trustees Hire Some One.
